Welcome to Alteram’s first ever newsletter! It is with great pleasure and much 

excitement that we’re launching this platform with the purpose of keeping you 

informed of all Alteram’s new and thrilling happenings! 

We’d also like to open the floor and invite all departments to keep us updated on any exciting and 

monumental happenings that may occur over the New Year (2018) that you think should be published 

in the upcoming AUDI ALTERAM PARTEM issues. Feel free to email relevant stories and their related 

images to intercom@alteram.co.za 

Just the same, it is necessary to express that the last three to four years have been a great learning 

and rewarding experience for Alteram. We have watched our company grow from employing as little 

as six (6) employees in 2013 and expanding to over a whopping 280 plus employees in 2017. 

Alteram continues to climb and mature, adding to its service offerings continuously. 

With this immense growth comes great responsibility and continued commitment from each and every 

one of us to ensure that we are heading towards the right direction. Alteram’s first issue reflects on 

the milestones and plans for the near future! Get to know Collet Ngobeni, Chief Operations Officer 

(COO) on a new level and learn more about Alteram’s new product offerings… it all begins here, with 

the first ever AUDI ALTERAM PARTEM issue.

WE ARE GOING 

Alteram is ecstatic to be taking up a new initiative in the New Year by ”Going Green”, 

and openly invites all employees to take part. 

Most of you are probably reading this and thinking, “but what does “Going Green” mean? 

“Going green” is a popular phrase being bandied about these days. Chances are, you have heard it referred 

to quite a lot. But what does going green really mean? In essence, it refers to using various everyday methods 

to help save the world and its environment. Many people consider going green to be an actual lifestyle; for 

them, it means basing your actions on working to save the world. From the smallest details to the most sweeping 

aspects of life, saving the world by implementing a green lifestyle is something that more and more people are 

aiming to do. 

Going green doesn’t have to end at the workplace, but it sure can start here! So how can you contribute to 

going green while at work? We’ve listed a few tips below to kick start the process: 

Eliminate waste in Printing - All too often we print a document to discover that the last page only has a web 

address at the bottom, or other printable space is wasted. Ensure that your documents are spaced correctly to 

reduce wasted paper. 

Go Digital - Is it necessary to print out a meeting agenda for every member? Or can you incorporate it into a 

slideshow, or simply send it via email? How about posting employee manuals and other materials online rather 

than distributing — and onerously updating — print copies? 

Recycle - Alteram will be implementing and encouraging recycling in the New Year. With paper being the major 

contributor to waste in the office, we will strategically be placing bins which are clearly marked in the areas 

where staff can deposit their paper easily. 

Separate containers for other waste such as glass and plastic will also be made available and strategically 

placed. 

To ensure that these bins are used we will be eliminating individual bins in the office so you will need to get up 

and put your waste into the relevant bins. 

Keep your own space neat - As much as we have a dedicated and superb cleaning crew at Alteram, it’s still 

up to us to do our part and keep our desks and offices tidy! All employees are requested to keep their own 

area and desk clean. Here’s how: 

•It’s the obvious but it’s vital: tidy, chuck, shred, donate. If you haven’t used something in months, it needs to go! 

•Make sure your desk is tidy. Use containers, drawers, magazine boxes. Your desk is your nerve centre so make 

sure it’s not clogged up. 

•Get rid of dirt and dust- simply wipe your desk once a week. 

•Minimise the use of paper- if you can use the digital version, do so.

What is World AIDS Day? 

World AIDS Day takes place on the 1st December each 

year. It’s an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in 

the fight against HIV, to show support for people living 

with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from 

an AIDS-related illness. Founded in 1988, World AIDS Day 

was the first ever global health day. 

Why is World AIDS Day important? 

Sub-Saharan Africa is the region worst-affected by HIV 

and AIDS. HIV/AIDS in South Africa is a prominent health 

concern as South Africa has the highest prevalence of 

HIV/AIDS compared to any other country in the world. 

Globally, there is an estimated 36.7 million people who 

have the virus. Despite the virus only being identified in 

1984, more than 35 million people have died of HIV or 

AIDS, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in 

history.

World AIDS Day is important because it reminds the public 

and government that HIV has not gone away – there is still 

a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, fight 

prejudice and improve education. 

What should I do on World AIDS Day? 

World AIDS Day is an opportunity to show solidarity with 

the millions of people living with HIV worldwide. Most 

people do this by wearing an HIV awareness red ribbon 

on the day. 

Living With HIV/AIDS: Myths and Facts 

Having HIV Means You Have AIDS 

Myth. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that 

destroys the body's CD4 immune cells, which help fight 

disease. With the right medications, you can have HIV for 

years or decades without HIV progressing to AIDS. AIDS 

(acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is diagnosed 

when you have HIV as well as certain opportunistic 

infections or your CD4 cell count drops below 200. 

It's Difficult to Get HIV from Casual Contact 

Fact. You can't catch or spread HIV from hugging 

someone, using the same towel, or sharing the same glass. 

However, you can acquire the disease from having 

unprotected sex, sharing needles, or getting a tattoo from 

unsterilized equipment. 

You Have Just a Few Years to Live 

Myth. Because of the HIV drugs that are now available, 

the truth is that many people can live for decades with 

HIV and have a normal or near-normal life span. You can 

help prevent HIV from progressing to AIDS by seeing your 

doctor regularly, taking you medicines, and following your 

doctor's guidance. 

You'll Know You Have HIV Because of Your Symptoms 

Myth. Some people don't show any signs of HIV for years 

after being infected. However, many can have some 

symptoms within 10 days to a few weeks after infection. 

These first symptoms are similar to the flu or mononucleosis 

and may include fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, 

rash, and muscle aches. They usually disappear after a 

few weeks and you may not have symptoms again for 

several years. The only way to tell you have HIV is to get 

tested. 

HIV Can Be Cured 

Myth. At this time, there is no cure for HIV in most cases, but 

treatment can keep virus levels low and help maintain 

your immune system. Some drugs interfere with proteins HIV 

needs to copy itself; others block the virus from entering 

or inserting its genetic material into your immune cells. All 

HIV-infected persons should take these medicines, which 

are given in combination and are called antiretroviral 

therapy. 

Anyone Can Get HIV 

Fact. More than 12,000 people with AIDS die each year. 

Anyone can get HIV -- men, women, and children, people 

who are gay or straight. Men who have sex with men make 

up about 26,3000 new HIV infections each year. Women 

account for about 7,400 new infections. 

Sex Is Safe When Both Partners Have HIV 

Myth. Just because you and your partner both have HIV, 

doesn't mean you should forget about protection when 

having sex. Using a condom or other latex barrier can 

help protect you from other sexually transmitted diseases 

as well as other strains of HIV, which may be resistant to 

anti-HIV medication. Even if you are being treated and 

feel well you can still infect others.

Alteram, as you all may have heard, seen or been a part of has officially moved to its new premises. Situated at 

1144 16th road in Midrand, our new ‘home’ boasts a sizeable reception area, auditorium, various spacious 

offices as well as covered parking! Yes, you read right! 

After being housed at 265 15th road since inception in 2013, our new premises, serving as the company’s head 

office can accommodate all of Alteram’s staff comfortably. 

This relocation comes as a result of Alteram’s rapid growth. Due to the increase in numbers, we had outgrown 

our existing premises resulting in our move being a thrilling new development for all. We look forward to 

experiencing many more new and successful business opportunities and to creating extraordinary memories in 

our new home!

Cecilia graduated 

with a Diploma in 

Accounting and Business 

Management in 2001. 

Appointed by Alteram in 

July 2015 as a Planner 

and Coordinator, her role 

involved but was not 

limited to coordinating the 

developers and business 

analysts, managing the 

DHL project, assisting in 

planning and procurement 

and managing the asset 

register for the Department 

of Water and Sanitation 

(DWS). 

In February 2017 Cecilia 

was presented with the 

opportunity to join the 

Business Development team 

as a Bid Coordinator, of 

which she took on willingly. 

She now forms an essential 

part of the Business 

Development Team. 

During her leisure time, 

Cecilia enjoys spending 

time with her family and 

watching movies in the 

comfort of her own home. 

As the head of the 

Marketing and Business 

Development division, 

Garth’s motive for the 

establishment of his new 

team is to increase 

Alteram’s visibility as an 

organisation and to get 

our message to our 

customers. “We are hoping 

the results will yield more 

clients and sales. I think the 

customers and clients want 

more of an authentic 

business relationship and 

having a marketing 

strategy can yield the 

results that we all looking 

for”. 

Garth’s short term goal for 

Alteram is to gain a bigger 

and increasingly diverse 

pool of public and private 

sector clients bringing in 

more annuity revenue. 

When asked what he does 

during his free time, he looks 

somewhat confused, but 

eventually answers, “I don’t 

have spare time. I work and 

if I have spare time I go to 

Cape Town and I work 

there too”- *laughs*. 

Taryn Champion holds 

a BA degree in Journalism 

and a BA honours degree 

in Sociology. She was 

appointed in July as 

Alteram’s Proposal Writer. 

Her experience lies in 

writing across a variety of 

mediums. As Alteram’s first 

proposal writer, Taryn 

aspires to ensure that all 

documentation sent 

internally and externally, 

especially relating to 

tenders are written in a 

clear, concise and 

professional manner. 

Taryn spends her free time 

cooking, reading and 

visiting friends and family. 

Felix joined Alteram in 

2016 and worked in the 

Call Centre as a Call 

Centre Agent for a period 

of one (1) year. He was 

then transferred to the Bid 

Office in January 2017 

and is now a Bid Office 

Administrator. 

Felix will be joining the 

reception team in the New 

Year. We wish him well in his 

new role. 

During his free time, Felix 

spends time with and trains 

his young team of soccer 

players.

With Alteram’s growth, came the expansion of the new Business 

Development Team. Headed by Chief Technical Officer (CTO) 

Garth Madella, this team comprises of young and talented 

individuals who have an undying passion for what they do. 

So what exactly do they do, you ask?

Marguerite Smal was 

appointed as Alteram’s 

Graphic Designer in 

August this year. She 

graduated from the North 

West University with a (BA) 

Graphic Design in 2014 

and holds a Software 

Engineering Certification 

through UNISA, which she 

acquired in 2015. 

Marguerite is currently 

completing a BCOM 

Business Informatics degree 

and looks forward to 

expanding her career as a 

Developer at Alteram in 

the near future. 

In her spare time she tends 

to her creative side and 

spends her time painting 

and drawing. She also 

enjoys going to the gym 

and taking casual on 

road runs. 

Matsatsi was 

appointed by Alteram in 

March 2016 as a Call 

Centre Consultant, of 

which she received 

training for a period of 

three (3) months prior to 

commencement. 

In June 2016 Matsatsi 

moved to the Bid Office 

and is now a Bid 

Administrator. Her duties, to 

name a few, include 

beginning the tender 

process by putting tender 

files together, assisting 

various department with 

administrative tasks, filing 

and binding documents. 

Matsatsi is excited to be 

tying the knot in December 

after getting engaged in 

2013. She enjoys spending 

her free time with family 

and going to church. 

Joseph was employed 

by Alteram as a Call 

Centre Agent in January 

2015. In June 2015 he 

moved to the APS division 

where he maintained the 

Service Level Agreement’s 

(SLA) on helpdesk. Joseph 

was transferred to the Bid 

Office in May 2017, which 

he now thoroughly enjoys. 

“The workload is much 

more challenging in the 

Bid Office and I need to 

make sure I maintain many 

things”, he says. 

His role includes logging 

and managing tickets, 

updating the tender 

board and ensuring the 

smooth running of the 

tender process by 

completing all 

administrative tasks. 

During his spare time, 

Joseph develops school 

kids by teaching 

choreography at 

Dlalamabizaro Art 

Productions, a local 

non-profit organisation. 

Moses Monyeki was first 

appointed in February 2018 

as Alteram’s Business 

Development Manager. He 

holds a National Diploma in 

Information and 

Communications Technology 

(ICT) (2010) and completed 

his Bachelor of Technology 

degree in 2017. Moses 

always craves a challenge 

and as a result of his 

ambitious nature will be 

perusing his Master’s in Business 

Administration (MBA) in 2018. 

As Alteram’s Business 

Development Manager, Moses 

has a variety of 

responsibilities under his belt, 

including but not limited to 

researching the market for 

new IT products that Alteram 

can use as part of its service 

offering, ensuring that Alteram 

has the relevant 

accreditations, creating new 

opportunities and starting 

and maintaining new client 

and business relationships. 

In his free time, Moses enjoys 

sweating it out at the Gym, 

reading and spending quality 

time with family and friends.

Skills Development and Training 

Alteram is pleased to be providing Skills Development and Training to its employees, 

commencing in 2018. All approved training is job related, and will target specific 

performance gaps. 

The aim of Skills Development and Training is part of Alteram’s improvement plan to 

assist and enhance the way in which employees do their jobs, while simultaneously 

adding value to Alteram as a whole. 

Once trained, employees will be able to do their jobs more effectively. Added skills 

will result in better performance in the workplace but will also contribute to the 

improvement of personal situations and opens the door to long term growth in 

careers for all. 

Skills development, therefore, can thus be defined as: 

•Improving productivity in the workplace and the competitiveness of our businesses 

and 

•Improving the quality of life of workers, their prospects of work and their mobility. 

Alteram firmly believes that each and every one contributes towards the 

advancement of the company and for that it is important that we endeavour to 

improve skills and credentials. 

TRAINING PROCESS 

The study leave cycle has been changed to commence from 01 

October 2017 to 30 September 2018 following the training 

requirement consultations. 

As a result, all study leave balances have been updated on the Employee Self 

Service (ESS) to six (6) days. 

All employees attending approved training should apply for study leave. If the 

duration of training for all approved courses is more than six (6) days, an employee 

will need to apply for the remaining days as annual leave. 

For training to be approved, employees must complete the following documents: 

• Study application form; 

• Work back agreement. 

Always ensure that valid documentation is attached and leave is approved prior to 

commencement of training. Should you need any assistance or clarification, please 

contact HR.

We all know Collet Ngobeni as the happy-go-lucky guy who 

tends to be quite the expert at turning frowns upside down. 

The marketing team sat with Mr Ngobeni, Chief Operating 

Officer (COO) at Alteram, to get a better understanding of 

this dynamic being. 

When did you first start working for Alteram? 

I started working for Alteram in September 2015. Prior to this I worked at the 

South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) from 2011 to 2015 in IT Operations. 

What is your main role as a Chief Operating Officer? 

To make people happy and perform their duties, especially the Contact 

Centre and Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs (DLCA) project 

staff. I also have to ensure that the organisation grows operationally and 

efficiently and make sure that we deliver according to our Service Level 

Agreements (SLA’s), thereby making sure that the client is looked after. 

I also enjoy lunch with the client when we take them out *laughs*- it’s my task. 

What would you say has been the highlight since you started working 

at Alteram? 

The running of the Contact Centre. I’ve never ran a Contact Centre before. 

It has given me a lot of experience and I’ve learnt a lot. Sometimes people 

think a Contact Centre is just to log a ticket, but it’s far beyond that. It has a 

big impact and made big changes for the Department of Water and Sanitation 

(DWS). There was what I called a “wobbily” between all the divisions but 

the Contact Centre has breached this gap. 

Also working with Philip, he is a very interesting character. I’ve learned a lot 

from the Chartered Accountant (CA) and financial point-of-view, which is 

something you don’t get from the IT perspective. So it has opened my eyes 

and given me a different perspective business-wise. 

Also, everyone at Alteram adds character, such as Garth and all Alteram’s 

employees. 

What hobbies do you partake in during your spare time? 

“It’s obvious”. 

Taryn: “What is obvious? 

“You know… can you guess?” 

Taryn: “No. Tell me”. 

“Gym and body building” *laughs*. 

Taryn: So why don’t you look like a body builder? 

“I don’t have time and also I prefer reading-I like reading a lot. I also enjoy 

travelling with family. 

Do you have a role model? Someone you look up to and inspires you? 

If so, who are they and why? 

It used to be Oscar Pistorius but then he lost it. I used to look up to him 

because of what he achieved being handicapped. I also used to train with 

him at Gym. 

I would think, “If Oscar can achieve all he has with no legs, why can’t I achieve 

my goals?”. 

A person who currently inspires me is Dynamo, the Magician. He can walk on 

water and float on air and he and Oscar are not so different. They are both 

the perfect example of setting one’s mind to something and achieving itthere 

is no limit.

Seasons greetings to you and warm well wishes to you and your family. The festive 

season is upon us again and it is a time to be merry in the company of loved ones and 

friends. These are the times to savour and enjoy – they are the spice of life. 

The year has gone by very quickly – it seems as if it was only a short while ago that the 

festive season of 2016 was upon us. As we prepare to unwind, relax and celebrate, it 

is important to pause for a moment and reflect on the year that has passed, including 

our many accomplishments and the goals and desires which remain to be completed. 

This moment of reflection will help us gauge how far we have come and will provide 

insight for our planning activities at the beginning of the year. Many of us will want to 

continue progress towards accomplishing the incomplete objectives we had set for 

2017 while we set additional stretching targets for 2018. 

Alteram Solutions set very strong targets at the beginning of 2017. Even though we did 

not grow in every way that we anticipated, we made significant headway emerging as 

a solid player in the South African IT ecosystem. 

The crowning achievement of the year was acquiring our own building and corporate 

campus, complete with sprawling lawns, which plays home to a burgeoning peacock 

family. Having our own corporate campus solidly positions us in the community as a 

bigger, more established company and this brand identity will be very important in our 

marketing efforts in the years to come. 

There were many other noteworthy achievements at Alteram Solution in 2017 and these 

should not go unacknowledged. 

We successfully completed the Amathole District Municipality data migration project. 

The AMS team has to be congratulated for this excellent performance. 

We diligently rolled out the Licence Enrollment Units to Drivers License Card Account 

sites, including Gauteng, North West, Eastern Cape and the Western Cape province 

and we look forward to completing the rollout of the units to the rest of the country in 

the New Year. 

Importantly, all the Walk-in-Centres for the Department of Water and Sanitation CRM 

project were established and are operational. The establishment of a web-channel application 

with self-service options, full automation of email and SMS for inbound and 

outbound and full automation of outbound campaign management was achieved.

Significantly, Alteram applications were well developed, namely the web campaign 

management application for voice, email and SMS and the Alteram file management 

application for the management and tracking of project files and tenders. 

We established a Business Development Unit which includes Public Relations, Marketing, 

Tenders and Sales. We are in the process of enhancing the Alteram image by establishing 

a social media presence, revamping our webite and improving all communications 

internally as well as externally. 

While there is much more work to do and there may be further challenges ahead, we end 

2017 stronger, better and more able to serve the needs of our customers and fulfil the 

ambitions of our stakeholders. 

The New Year will bring its own mix of successes and challenges, but our direction is 

clear. We know what we must do. Our job is to continue to focus intently on what we can 

control: providing our customers and clients with the best service and most comprehensive 

ICT services solutions in the market, managing our costs, building our brand, and 

doing our part to keep the economy moving forward. 

You, our staff of competent and caring employees, is our most important asset. We have 

confidence in you to work together as a team to realise our shared goals and ambitions. 

We are committed to supporting you as we work together to grow and evolve in 

this ever-changing environment. 

As you take time to spend treasured moments with friends and family, enjoy yourself, be
