TEAM/WORK
For many of us, we spend more time at work than in any other
pursuit in our lives. Work gives us dignity and purpose and is a
core part of our social identity. Today, anything worth doing takes
the collective work of a large team.
AVATAR
The bright pink dot
For all of us, success in this life will ultimately be measured
not by career achievement¹ -- but by how well we love², how
comfortable we are with ourselves³, how we make others
feel⁴⁵, how well we inspire others to be their best selves⁶ and
how well we leave the world better than we found it⁷. These
are what David Brooks calls the eulogy virtues⁸, or what
people will remember you by when you leave this planet.
My favorite quote is an adapted version of John Wesley’s
quote⁹ by the Kuumba singers of Harvard College:
“Do what you can with what you have to leave a space
better than youe inherited It.”
¹ “People tend to overinvest in their career (rather than relationships) because of the tangible, daily achievement that a career is designed to make feel real” - Clayton Christenson
² “I believed--and still believe--that when all is said and done, none of us will be measured on how much we accomplish but on how well we love” - Krista Tippett
³ “Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken” - Oscar Wilde
⁴ “People will forget what you said, but people will never forget how you made them feel” - Maya Angelou
⁵ “Be kind anyway” - Seen at a sign in little shop in Khan Market in Delhi
⁶ “You have a responsibility to be your best self -- and to share that responsibility with others” - Luigi, Soul Cycle
⁷ “To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To
appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has
breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded” - Ralph Waldo Emerson
⁸ The Moral Bucket List - David Brooks
⁹ “Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can.” - John
Wesley, founder of Methodist branch of Christianity
