VA MAINE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM<br />

In addition to Togus VA Medical Center, 11<br />

Community Clinics are found throughout the State<br />

of <strong>Maine</strong>. These provide the most common<br />

outpatient services, including health <strong>and</strong> wellness<br />

visits, without the challenges of visiting a larger<br />

SCREENING FOR TRAUMATIC<br />

BRAIN INJURY (TBI)<br />

To identify veterans who may have TBI, VA medical<br />

facilities have implemented a computer-based<br />

screening tool <strong>and</strong> require providers at VA medical<br />

facilities to use the tool to screen all veterans,<br />

including all Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation<br />

Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND),<br />

who present for outpatient health care.<br />

It is essential that service members <strong>and</strong> veterans<br />

are screened for TBI as early as possible; because<br />

TBI becomes more difficult to treat the longer the<br />

condition goes unscreened <strong>and</strong> the complexity of<br />

diagnosing TBI <strong>and</strong> Post-traumatic stress disorder<br />

(PTSD) become more challenging to distinguish.<br />
