The Voice of Help, Hope <strong>and</strong> Healing<br />

are personalized to each individual’s situation <strong>and</strong><br />

uses a collaborative process that involves participants<br />

(individuals with brain injury <strong>and</strong> their personal<br />

support systems) working together with BIAA-ME<br />

facilitators (individuals who provide assistance in<br />

navigating systems) to achieve agreed upon goals.<br />

SUPPORT GROUPS<br />

<strong>Brain</strong> injury support groups exist throughout <strong>Maine</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> serve to help <strong>Maine</strong>rs with brain injury <strong>and</strong> their<br />

families to know that they are not alone. Being part<br />

of a strong local support network makes a huge<br />

difference in coping after you or a loved one sustains<br />

a brain injury. BIAA-ME helps link people with the<br />

support groups that are available through the <strong>Maine</strong><br />

brain injury community. A specialist from BIAA-ME<br />

frequently is a guest presenter at support groups<br />

throughout the state.<br />

BIAA-ME also fosters statewide advocacy to help the<br />

brain injury community work together to advocate<br />

for the services, supports <strong>and</strong> funding needed by<br />

persons with brain injury <strong>and</strong> their families.<br />

COMMUNITY AND INDIVIDUAL<br />

EVENTS TO RAISE AWARENESS<br />

AND FUNDS FOR BRAIN INJURY<br />

BIAA-ME plans community events, such as Bowling<br />

for <strong>Brain</strong> <strong>Injury</strong> SM , that offer individuals a way to help<br />

to raise awareness of brain injury as well as funds to<br />

support the services offered through BIAA-ME. Check<br />

EDUCATION AND INFORMATION<br />

ABOUT BRAIN INJURY<br />

BIAA-ME provides a wide variety of educational<br />

<strong>and</strong> informative resources for persons affected by<br />

brain injury <strong>and</strong> their families/caregivers including<br />

an annual conference entitled Defining Moments<br />

in <strong>Brain</strong> <strong>Injury</strong>, access to BIAA webinars, booklets<br />

<strong>and</strong> brochures <strong>and</strong> more. BIAA-ME also provides<br />

outreach to the 38 hospitals in <strong>Maine</strong> to assist them<br />

in helping patients make a smoother transition from<br />

the hospital.<br />

SOCIAL, RECREATION AND<br />

OUTREACH PROGRAMS<br />

BIAA-ME offers social <strong>and</strong> recreational programs<br />

when community interest <strong>and</strong> resources permit.<br />

BIAA-ME participates in community health fairs <strong>and</strong><br />

other outreach programs to help raise awareness of<br />

brain injury <strong>and</strong> the services available for <strong>Maine</strong>rs. For<br />

ADVOCACY<br />

BIAA-ME offers advocacy on an individual basis<br />

through resource facilitation services to help persons<br />

with brain injury meet their needs in the community.<br />
