WHEN DECENT bands get a
slagging, it's because the
band knows it should and
could have done better. The
Cure's 'The Top' album is a
prime example (sure 'The
Top' sounds like Mozart
compared to the gaudy
rubbish produced by
Kajagoogoo, Duran Duran ...
ad infinitum) but compared
to earlier albums, it's not up
to much.
Barron's review may have
been a bit rough but he was
right. Why? Well, because Mr
Smith is a bit of an arrogant
sod because he knows he
could have done better, but
doesn't really make an effort
because the album will sell
well enough.
One day, darling Robert
will make an album to rank
with 'Seventeen Seconds'
(but only when somebody
discreetly slips him some
lipstick remover). In his own
words (via 'Pornography' ) I
must find a cure . . .
