Dear Friends,
In 2005, we saw the face of hunger. Hurricane Katrina brought it into our living rooms
and we saw the desperation of people who didn’t have access to the basic necessities of
food, water and shelter. Ā e images were shocking and they spurred people across the
country to act.
Unfortunately, it often takes a dramatic crisis to motivate people to help. Hunger in our
own community is seldom so dramatic. It’s much more subtle, much more hidden. But
here in Kansas City, we are fortunate to have fi nancial donors, food donors, agencies and
volunteers who are committed to responding to the disaster of hunger in our community
day in and day out.
Since it was founded in 1979, Harvesters has been Kansas City’s response to hunger.
Ā at year, we distributed 150,000 pounds of food. In 2006, we distributed more than 22
million pounds. Ā rough our network of more than 550 agencies, Harvesters now serves
nearly 60,000 people every week.
What does the face of hunger look like in Kansas City? It is the face of a child who stuff s
his pockets during lunch at school so he has food to eat at home at night. It is the face of
a single mom struggling to make ends meet on a low-wage job. It is the face of a senior
citizen who goes without food in order to buy medicine, further jeopardizing his already
fragile health.
Because of your support throughout the year, Harvesters is here to answer the call for help.
Ā rough our Feeding Families Initiative, we provide emergency food assistance throughout
a 13-county area. With our Childhood Hunger Initiative, we provide kids with the food
they need to grow up healthy and the skills they need to make nutritious food choices
throughout their lives. Our Senior Feeding Initiative targets the special needs of the elderly
who are experiencing hunger in our community. And our Healthy Eating Initiative helps
ensure that we are collecting and distributing nutritious food and helping recipients make
healthy food choices.
But none of Harvesters’ programs would be possible without your support. We are deeply
grateful for your gifts of food, money and time that make our work possible. It is because
of you that food is here for our neighbors in need when they turn to Harvesters for help.
