FOTIS FOT

OPOULOS

ARTISTIC VIGILANTE - Tell us a little about yourself
FOTIS - Bought my first camera at the end of 2013. My full name is Fotis Fotopoulos. I’m
mostly inspired by cinema & music (I ‘ve been working as a professional musician for many
years). Working as a professional photographer/cinematographer for a couple of years now,
shooting portraits, events, theatrical plays and commercial videos . Lately I started working
on documentaries.
ARTISTIC VIGILANTE - What would you say are your challenges as a photographer in
your country?
FOTIS - One big challenge is actually that everybody wants cheaper rates for better photos,
or even free work. Especially with the economical crisis here in Greece. They only think a
photographer is a paid professional when it comes to weddings.
ARTISTIC VIGILANTE - That seems to be the general problem everywhere, How do you
get these models to appreciate your work and actually pay you for taking your time to make
them so beautiful? and how do you promote your works?
FOTIS - Most of my models, being professional or not, approach me for my personal photographic
style so it feels like they already appreciate my work. About self promoting now, well
this is actually the hardest thing for me cause it takes too much of my time every day to be
active in social platforms. But in general being polite and appreciative about other people’s
work and comments is crucial. It’s not a strategy, it is the way I am trying to live my life.

ASH SHANK

Q- What’s your full name & location?
A- Ashz Shank, Chino California
Q -What inspires your style of photography?
It looks a bit dark, care to share?
A - I want to show the beauty within darkness!
we live in a world where the media tells us
what is right and beautiful on a daily basis. I
want to show the world that there are many
things that we never really look at! People
see cancer survivor scars but fail to see the
beauty in the fight that the survivor won.
There’s so much beauty in the world.
As much as i absolutely love beautiful
and crisp images,i prefer mine
to be more blurry and distorted
when possible.
Q - Beautiful! Thank you for sharing
your creative process. lastly,
how old are you and is photography
a full time job?
A - I’m 41 years old and it’s a passion,not
a job. I’m an aerospace
composite technician in my everyday
life.
Q - Do you ever feel like you will embrace
light toned style of shooting/photography?
A - Shooting bright/light toned? I might, as
there have been times I feel the piece needs
something different from my norm. At
this moment I’m finding myself wanting to
express more of the darker imagery, but I
may some day try to shoot something a little
lighter,Would be a real challenge for me! Lol
Q -Would you say you go against the norm?
A - You mention about going against the
norm, you have a great point right there! As
so many are running towards the next great
camera carrying the highest megapixels and
beautiful crisp images, I’m looking more
for a grungy more raw image. I’ve literally
scratched up images with sand sandpaper
and smeared paint across them to get the
real feel I was going for.

NINO FERNANDEZ

Q - What is you full name?
A - Nino Fernandez from Oakland
Q - How long have you been shooting?
A - I’ve been shooting on and off for 10 years and 3 years
ago i decided to go into it full time.
Q - What are your challenges as a photographer in Oakland?
A - I think it’s the same as anywhere. Making people understand
the value of having quality photograph.A lot of
people would simply borrow their cousin’s camera
and do it themselves,
devaluing the art thus
thinning the market.
I have been kind of
lucky because of my
musicians/artists network
that understands
the value of good imagery.
70% of my revenue
comes from this
network.

A
WORLD
WITH-
OUT
ADAM
Editorial by Losgiddy

In a World of reducing visually stimulating pictures,we are very selective
of the art we curate and this editorial piece is definitely worth the
wait.
It is titled ‘‘A World Without Adam” by the prolific photographer LOS-
GIDDY from Lagos,Nigeria.
This time losgiddy explores the use of a floral theme to express the idea
of femininity and nature being one and the same thing in his new editorial
piece for artistic vigilante magazine.
”For this visual piece, i wanted to explore the idea of a lady not just being
at one with nature but being an integral part of nature.
It took months of planning with the logistics team (@losgiddy_logistics)
but we eventually got the vision together… This was meant to be
an outdoor work and then of all the days for rain to pick.. It chose this
day. Seemed like bad luck but little did we know God wanted to use it
as an opportunity to make us extra creative and build our own grass set
indoors… Well..Here’s the final result.

You might notice its supposedly a world without Adam but at some
point we introduced an extra model to create diversity and eliminate
a monotonous feel. It means that on a higher level Eve does need an
Adam but its still a monotonous feel because its just two similar beings
which further depicts that….There is NO WORLD without Adam, just
as God intended it.”
EMMA
WILLS
EMMA

WILLS

Q -Can you tell us a bit about your style of photography? What inspires you?
A- Thank you for this opportunity. My full name is Emma Wills. I’m inspired by the beauty
that surrounds us everyday. The details that people don’t notice. I’m still developing my
style I think, often when I create something I’m never fully happy until I’ve revisited it over
and over again. I’m quite a perfectionist and aim to create pieces that people have to think
about. Just love creating.
Q - Let’s talk about this image, Can you give us a step by step procedure of your surrealism
edit process?
A-Of course, the beautiful lady was originally in a blue dress but I felt the dress needed to
be red to be the main focus of the image. I selected the dress and adjusted the colour balance
and hue/sat to make a red tone I was happy with. The dress itself is actually a figure
hugging dress down to the knees so I cut the skirt off another dress onto another layer,
warped it onto this dress and colour matched it with the top of the dress.

At this point, the background was an old ruined building but it didn’t give the right
feel so I swapped it for the current background. The lady was floating in mid air
so I edited in the rubble and erased parts of the bottom of the dress to give depth.
The horses are taken from a Stubbs painting and wrapped around the dress. I layer
masked their rumps out and cut them to flow with the dress nicely.
I felt the image needed balancing to the right so I added the birds. I added a blue and
yellow tone and added two custom gradient maps. Ran the image through Lightroom
to adjust tones so it had an oil on canvas feel and voila. The finished product.
Q - That’s amazing! can we talk about the process for the very first image with the
black umbrellas?
A - Yes absolutely; the image started off as a bride in a white dress, I reduced the
lightness down from 100 to -86, added a 50% grey layer to add some dodging and
burning for the shadows and highlights. I felt like the bottom needed some drama so
I added the umbrellas as part of the dress.
The whole image was quite dark so I decided to inject some colour with the red balloons.
The background is just a free cloud stock image with the saturation lowered.
Added my custom gradient map and reduced the opacity to 30%. I hope that explains
the process well enough.

So the lady in the coliseum I started with the sky
as a background. It is a lovely, moody sky but I
lowered the saturation by -41 and the lightness
by -18. Adjusted the colour balance; Red +9,
green +1 and blue -17. I added the colosseum
but flipped it horizontally. So it was on the left of
the picture. That just felt right to do.The colosseum
had hue/sat adjustment layer with the sat
-58 and the lightness reduced to -21 and I put
a graduated fill of black on the bottom and left
side. I added some light rays from the sun on
the right using a cloud brush and radial/gaussian
blurs.I used the same bride as the one in the
consequence of sound. Except this one has a
white dress, I just did some colour correction by
reducing saturation -33and reducing the amount
of yellow by -7.
So I added them in just scattering them around
the picture and I like odd numbers so I used 5.
Added different Gaussian blurs to them all and
repeated the dodge/burn.
I layer masked her into the scene and added shadow
to her back using the dodge/burn brushes on a
50% grey layer with the blend mode set to overlay.
I liked the image as it was but decided to add in
some flying umbrellas, just because it needed to be
more surreal. And as the red goes so well with the
current colour theme, I decided they would be red
umbrellas. So I added them in just scattering them
around the picture and I like odd numbers so I
used 5. Added different Gaussian blurs to them all
and repeated the dodge/burn on each umbrella.
I duplicated the sun rays so that one layer sat on
the top of the image and over the bride. I added
my custom gradient map at 32% opacity. I loaded
the image into Lightroom and added one of my
custom LR presets. That’s the process, it’s a pretty
technical piece and took me about 3 hours to do.
It’s also one of the images I have created where I
haven’t gone back and forth changing things as I’m
happy with it.

Q- When you make these
images, do you have an
idea of what you want?
A -
I generally just create
until I feel the image is
complete, I rarely have
any clue as to what I’m
going to create. Feelings
have a lot to do with what
gets created.
A - Thank you for the words, they mean
a lot. I’m glad i have an outlet otherwise i
would have spent so much time thinking
about what could have been. Its amazing to
still have publications like artistic vigilante
discover artists and give them much needed
and appreciated exposure, that in itself keeps
be positively focused.
The love of my life left me
earlier this year to follow
his dreams so my art has
been a way of expressing
my feelings.
I get inspired by other
artists out there and
I’ve previously recreated
album covers to have
something to work from;
but now I’m developing
my own style and I’m really
enjoying creating fine
art fashion.
Storm Thorgerson is a
huge influence for me,
I’m a big fan of Miss Aniela
and Kirsty Mitchell
also.
Q - Thank goodness he left!
At the end of it all you would
meet someone better and
you’ll realize wy that didn’t
work and see the blessing.

ELLIE FULFORD

Q - What’s your full name?
A -NEWO is the name my photography
goes under :) I’m Ellie Fulford - based in
Castleford in the UK, started photography
just over a year ago :)
Q - What inspired you to go into photography?
A - Just a love of all things alt-fashiony
I guess,
I loved makeup art and seeing amazing
pieces from designers, wanted to be able
to capture how beautiful I thought they
were.
Q -So do you do this on a professional
level?
A - No no this is just a hobby for me
,I just love creating the sort of images I
do!
Q - what’s the greatest challenge you’ve
had so far?
A - The greatest challenge so far has
been trying to stay original and true
to myself and my concepts as much as
possible. Not getting disheartened if
someone rips off my work or if someone
subsequently pulls off the same thing a
lot better than I did. To be truly original
is so hard when there’s so many awesome
creative people out there, but the
main thing for me is to just remain true
to the fashion I’m passionate about and
it goes from there!
Q - What funds your photography?
A - I self fund with my regular job,
Usually I work with other creatives
on a collaborative basis, especially
if it’s a project I really want to work
on. I’m very lucky to have met and
worked with some amazing people.
Q -where do you see yourself in the
next 5 years?
A - In the next 5 years - keeping on
doing exactly what I’m doing now
just with bigger and more awesome
concepts! Hopefully getting involved
with more people globally
too!

JOHN MALATE

Q - What’s your full name, location and
how long have you been shooting for?
A - John malate im from paris france,-
Shooting fashion for a year and half now.
But been shooting longer than that
Q- what inspires you?
A - I love working with a team. Building a
story. Making a scene.I usually love bringing
my ideas to life, Im inspired by fashion.
Q - What are the challenges for a photographer
like you in Paris? We know Paris
has tons of photographers so how do you
stand out? How do you get your work and
yourself recognized in this multitude?
A - I phone clients. I have good relationship
with small businesses. Clothing, restaurant.
Etc.. i do editorials.
There are too many photographer in paris.

SHAZIA HOGARTH

Q - How long have you been into photography
& what made you pick up a camera
A - Over 10 years, I had always had an interest
in photography and got into shooting weddings
to make a living. I made enough money
to open a studio and Ive always had a lot of
pent up creative energy so decided to start
experimenting.
Q - How lucrative is it for a photographer like
yourself in the UK?
Q - How much do you charge for Editorials
and weddings respectively & what are your
sources of inspiration?
A - Where I’m based in the UK isn’t very
affluent and most editorial/conmercial work is
based in London. I havent started charging yet
for editorial as I’m still in the portfolio building
stage and doing editorial as a break from
weddings and a chance to get really creative. I
charge £1300 for a wedding. My inspirations
are Emily Soto, Sue Bryce, Annie Leibovitz
but I also draw inspiration from the world
around me and music
Q - Preferred gear for shooting?
A - Canon 5Dmk3 and I’m starting to experiment
with polaroid and film.
Q - What are you doing to set yourself apart
from other photographers in Newcastle and
ultimately leave a mark in the art world?
A - I have very high standards when
it comes to my work, there are a lot of
photographers who would work with
anyone and everyone who asks and
ultimately that waters down the quality
of their portfolio. I was always specific
about working with the right model for
the right shoot.
A - I’ve just had a chance to think
things over and if its not too late i have
a few more influences i would like to
add if thats ok? I just wanted to add
to how much music influences me,
particularly rock and metal. ive always
loved the strong imagery and creative
music videos that have come out of
that genre and I’ve always been drawn
to darker imagery. I’ve found myself
tonight coming up with new ideas for
shoots off the back of watching some
rammstein videos (directed by Zoran
Bihać)
I’m also inspired by Bjork, her fearlessness
and tenacity in the way she
has shaped her career has inspired me
to want to strive to become more of
an artist when it comes to my work
and start treating photography as an
art form (as it rightly should be seen)
instead of a way to pay the bills. Hopefully
one day I’ll be referred to as an
artist as well as a photographer

STEPHANIE PEARL ROGERS

Q - What’s your full name, location and how long have you been shooting
for?
A - Stephanie Pearl Rogers, Bristol in UK and I’ve been shooting for 4
years
Q - What inspires you? Your pictures are very Very unique
A - Is this a hobby on the side for you or a full time profession?
A - Thank you so much! So many things inspire me! Paintings, lyrics,
mythology, nature and science, films etc. I’m particularly drawn to creating
images as a release of pain so anything that conceptually visualises
sorrow really speaks to me.
A - This is a hobby but I would love it to be an occasional full time
thing. At the moment I’m just fitting it in between working as an Ecologist
Q - Let’s talk about this image
A - The image was created using a smoke grenade that Shannon’s husband
was flailing about in the background. I used three photographs to
expand my frame above and below the scene. I then used a shot of the
antlers that I took immediately after the scene in identical lighting. I
then changed the colours and curves, vignetted the image and added a
few textures.
