Gavin (lead singer &
guitarist) and Michael
(lead guitarist) met
over 30 years ago,
played in many bands
together throughout
their college days and
then in 2007 formed
the band they are
today- Guns for Girls.
6 years ago Carl
(bassist) joined the
group and then 4 years later Phil
(drummer) joined the band which brings
them to their current line up.
In 2007 with the earlier line up they
found success getting
'single of the week' on
Kerrang radio, they also
played at a Kerrang event
the same year. They have
played to sell out audiences
at the O2 academy in
Birmingham and the Slade
Rooms in Wolverhampton.
When I sat down with the
guys from the band I was
intrigued to nd out a few
things like 'how did they
come up with their name'?
and 'which bands are they
inuenced by'? The band
name was picked in a somewhat
unorthodox way, interestingly they all
made up band names and placed them in
a hat, the rst few out the hat did not
have an impact until they pulled out the
name that Gavin had put in, a lyric from
one of his favorite bands 'Karma to
Burn', and the name 'Guns for girls' was

Now to their inuencestheir
style stems from bands
like Iron Maiden, Pixies,
Blink 182 and Queen of the
Stone Age.
You can not pigeon hole the
band into one specic genre
as they have created their
own unique sound, having
really catchy riffs and hooks
within the tunes they write.
Not only do I enjoy photographing and
interviewing musical artists but I also
enjoy playing guitar and creating songs
in my own spare time, so I thought i’d
take this opportunity to ask- "When it
comes to writing songs,
should I do lyrics rst or
melody"? the whole band
agreed pretty quickly that
they come up with a riff or
melody they like rst and
build lyrics around it to create
the song.
Every song they create is
different from the last but
always has their 'Guns for
Girls' recognisable sound.
Guns For Girls are currently
working on an album which
should be out in 2018, they are
taking their time with it as
they are recording, producing and
editing it all themselves, doing this was a
steep creative learning curve for them
which they have thoroughly enjoyed.
They have former guitarist from QOTSA
John Mcbain on board mixing the album,
he really enjoys their sound and likes
what they are currently working on.
