E D I T O R I A L
Welcome to the May / June edition of
Shrop Rocks magazine. Firstly,
wow what a launch party we had at
‘The Dana’ Shrewsbury for our rst edition,
over 500 people turned out and made it a
night to remember. Jailhouse tours event
‘Music Behind Bars’ certainly went down a
treat and looks a great venue for the future.
Anyway we’re here, and it’s time to start
thinking about Summer vacations with the
family, arhh this always is a mixed bag.
Making memories to last a lifetime comes
with it’s fair share of cost, most of which
involves whining, putting up with annoying
siblings, and some degree of hauling
ridiculous amounts of luggage. A small price
to pay, right?
And those are the good vacations.
Of course, small, petty annoyances are one
thing. For some, vacations end up being
much worse. In fact, some trips turn out to
be an absolute debacle. The irony is: it's
sometimes those messy vacations, the ones
with stories that last a lifetime, that creates
our most enduring memories. So enjoy your
family time, as these times are precious.
Mean while in Ludlow ...
Mildred, the church gossip, and selfappointed
monitor of the church's morals,
kept sticking her nose into other people's
business.
Several members did not approve of her
extra curricular activities, but feared her
enough to maintain their silence.
Frank, a man
of few words,
stared at her
for a moment
and just turned
and walked
away. He
didn't explain,
defend, or
deny. He said
nothing.
EDITOR@SHROPROCKS.COM
Later that
evening, Frank
quietly parked his pickup in front
of Mildred's house... Walked
home... and left it there all night.
(You gotta love Frank!)
She made a mistake, however, when she
accused Frank, a new member, of being an
alcoholic after she saw his old pickup parked
outside The Bull’s Head, one afternoon.
She emphatically told Frank (and several
others) including the vicar, that every one
seeing it there "WOULD KNOW WHAT HE
WAS DOING!"
How did the idea of The Big Busk, rst
come about?
When Ben was killed we wanted to
achieve a couple of things, celebrate
his life, raise funds for the charity
that had supported him so much and
also demonstrate to the public that
just because a person has found
themselves on the street does not
mean they are not loved or valued,
Ben was very much both.
Because Ben's rst love was music and
poetry, a busking event seemed
perfect. It was actually a friend of our
who called it the Big Busk (and yes
she was being a little bit cheeky at
the time expecting people to
mispronounce it!)
What's your rst memory of
something related to The Big Busk?
When we put out the appeal on social
media for musicians to take part we
were unsure if anyone would but
within a few hours we had a phone
call from Beth Prior, we had never
heard of her then and had no idea just
how super talented she is. Beth set up
a musicians closed group and the
whole event just snowballed from
there.
Tell us about some of the people
you've met while working on the
Cause?
That's just impossible because it is a
massive community event and each
and every one of the people taking
part can take credit for making it
happen. But special moments are
when you see seasoned professional
musicians stood alongside very young
performers. The look of admiration on
the younger performers faces is
priceless and we know the level of
young talent means some of the
dreams to make music their life will
be realised.
What has surprised you most?
I suppose I always knew Shrewsbury
was a pretty special place so it doesn't
surprise me that a community can
make this happen but it is still
overwhelming.
What do you nd most challenging?
That’s easy, the paper work !!
The interest seems to be growing.
Why do you think that is? How has it
changed over the years?
It is a very inclusive event and I think
most of us like to feel we belong. The
Big Busk is open to everyone and that
word has got round.
What's it like to be a volunteer for The
Big Busk? And how can people
interested in any of these areas get in
touch?
I hope it is a lot of fun. People can get
involved at any level that suits them.
We do need more people on the
planning team as there is a lot of
preparation, although interested
people do need to be prepared for
quite a bit of commitment (but its
worth it)
MAY/JUNE SHROPROCKS.COM P5
Being a local magazine supporting live
music in Shropshire, tell me what are
your musical inuences?
I don't really have a specic artist
that I follow, I tend to listen to radio
so I get the variety. But if I had to
choose some I would say Bowie, Adam
Ant and more recently I do like Rag
and Bone man.
How has local music helped towards
your Cause ?
Quite simply the event wouldn't
happen without local music, there is
so much high quality music playing in
our local pubs, clubs and other venues
every weekend, people have just got to
go out there and listen.
What do you do when you aren't
working on The Big Busk?
I work full time in the NHS doing
communications and engagement, I'm
also a trustee of the Shrewsbury Ark
charity and when I'm not doing that I
am wife and mum to a very patient
family.
What's your personal philosophy on
what more could be done to help your
Cause in Shropshire?
The Shrewsbury Ark needs new
premises but that will take a big
investment. The hope is to be able to
have a building that can accommodate
more treatment space so the charity
can tackle the root causes of why
people are struggling on the fringes of
society. Many of the clients at the Ark
have underlying issues such as mental
health illness, learning disabilities or
early life experiences that have left
them very deeply affected.
How do you see The Big Busk growing
over the next 5 years?
The hardest part is trying to keep it
the same, it works because it is not
big and commercial so we want to try
and maintain that. We want everyone
who wants, to be involved to feel
welcome.
Should Local
live shows
start
earlier ??
Seems reasonable to me’ came
the words from my musician
friends mouth (naming no
names), once asked the question
‘Should local live gigs start earlier?’.
‘I just played a string of ve shows in
a row that started at 7pm. Attendees
(and musicians) could be in bed by
11pm. How sane! Totally didn’t think
this would work, but hey! it did, to my
surprise’.
The bars to the venues stayed open
until at least 1am each night, so the
drinkers could keep the party rolling
and the people who needed to get up
early could leave after the show ended
at 10pm. In terms of revenue, the
place pulled from both crowds.
This approach obviously makes sense
for venues that appeal to the 30+
audience, but according to students
we’ve asked, lots were reluctant to
come out on week nights for late
shows. Starting shows early might
just be the thing to pump life into
struggling live-music scenes around
the country and a local venue near
you?
What do you think?
Should we start acts at 7 / 8pm. How
late is too late when it comes to
weeknight start-times? Does it feel
weird to step on stage when the sun
is still shining during our summer
months? Is this just all for the lite
weights? Or does this genuinely make
sense? Let us know your thoughts
Why do gigs start so late anyway?
Suppose you'd decided to see a lm or a
play or some sports event tonight, and it
didn't start till 10pm. If you nished work
at 6pm, that would give you four hours to
kill, which is a big chunk of time even if
you did get some food rst and then spent
the remaining couple of hours in the pub.
Or, if you were in London over October,
you might have lled the hours by
visiting one of the galleries that stayed
open late as part of a programme called
Lates. But most people don't want to have
to hang around killing time, which is why
lms, plays and matches start at 7pm or
8pm.
Gigs, though, are a whole other thing; it
has become accepted that they begin late.
And "late" has been getting ever later in
the last couple of years. The support act
might wander onstage at 8.30pm - 9pm is
more common - and if the main band
show their faces by 9.30pm, you're lucky.
Chances are, though, it won't be 9.30pm;
it'll be 10pm or later. At one show I
attended Brian Molko of Placebo was still
soundchecking at 10:45pm by my watch,
and when Guns N' Roses made a
comeback of sorts in 2006, their
Hammersmith Apollo gig began at 11pm,
and ended two hours later, well after the
last tube, leaving their immensely longsuffering
fans with a choice of the night
bus that didn’t exist or an astronomically
expensive taxi ride. And I don't even need
to mention (but will anyway) the
tardiness of rappers, which results in
performances that don't kick off till the
milkman has started his round.
even start till 2am. Go to bed before
dawn? What do you take him for? Chris
Martin? Purple haze must have been about
the colour of the bags under his eyes. It’s
probably what nished him off. No
autopsy needed here thank you very
much.
But what about the punters who've been
shufing around a venue for three hours,
waiting to see whoever they've forked out
£20+ for? Obviously, it suits venues when
shows run late, because the bar spend
increases proportionately. But it wouldn't
have been the venue's fault that Mr Molko
didn't get it together to do a soundcheck
till 10:45pm, or that Axl Rose lives in a
parallel universe where factors like
getting home afterward don't gure. I was
once at a Damien Rice show - at
Wolverhampton’s civic hall, no less -
where Rice, whose audience is made up of
once-a-year suburban gig-goers who rely
on trains that nish at 11.30pm or
thereabouts, didn't show himself till after
10pm. How I chuckled to myself during
the performance that all these good
looking young people would be stranded
in Wolverhampton of all places, God help
them. And how lucky I was to have a short
walk home. How annoyed was I later, I got
home to discover I’d left my front door
key in my jacket at the venue and was
locked out. I remember thinking as I
scurried back to the civic and found it
shut. Thanks Mr Rice, couldn’t you have
at least played a longer set, nob.
In the mind of somebody, somewhere, it's
edgy to start late and nish later. Kiss,
after all, wanted to rock'n'roll all night
(and party every day, which raises the
logistical question of how they ever found
time to write songs or, in Gene Simmons'
case, meet the 3,000 women he claims to
have notched up) [head scratch].
FISHING FOR OWLS
middle nger thankyou
Ato England: it’s rubbish,
innit? Brexit, bedroom
tax, bargain hunt, big brother
society.
Paul Henshaw & The Scientic
Simpleton’s sound like the old
England. The sound of football
chants, nursery rhymes and bad
puns, the days when we drank
and danced the weekends away,
but were proud of our ag, and
we all still had money left over
monday morning.
Fishing For Owls
gives this feeling
back, this is a well
thought out selection of
tunes that showcases the
full range of their mastery.
The album was recorded at
Ashley’s wine bar in
Shrewsbury, but don’t be
fooled, the sounds, full on
studio raw and the quality
of the songwriting
shines.
The righteous anger
of “Middle nger
thank you” has the
power to stir the
blood. “England”’s
hurdy gurdy, “Take
more punches,
Stomach hurts from
body blows” we hear from
Henshaw. The yearning
pulse of “Hometown King”.
The stark passionate
melodrama of “Kid on a
Bridge” is crying out to be
covered by some dark metal
band..
With an utterly unique
sound of punk guitars,
samples, punchy drums and
those delicious, sardonic,
dark, witty lyrics, there just
isn’t another band that
sounds like them.
Fishing For Owls is 10
songs of pure gold. It’s
positively indulgent. One of
the greatest aspects of their
ability is to take dark
subject matter
and craft
superb, catchy
grunge/dance/pu
nk/indie/rock
tunes around
them without
sounding trite
or preachy. And
this is reected
in the album. Henshaw gets
to the heart of the matter at
hand but never forgets to
write a killer hook, riff or
melody to get you singing
and dancing.
I was pleased to see this
album pop up in my inbox
and listened to it intently
over a few beers and vodkas
bank holiday Monday. By
the time the last track ‘I’ll
Never be a Pirate’ came to
it’s outro, I spilled out into
the streets of Bridgnorth.
Glorious, triumphant and
utterly compelled, The
Scientic Simpletons prove
once again why they are a
credit to Shropshire.
Today’s 'alternative' music
is too slick, too shiny, too
designed. What we need is a
Paul Henshaw & The
Scientic Simpleton’s
musical. Take the best
songs from all their stuff,
orchestrate them and turn
them into a show. A show
about shattered dreams and
ruined lives, a show about
getting drunk and having a
bloody good knees up, let’s
make it as bleak as Chicago
but with a Lion King
ending and all done with a
Salopian accent.
Browne won't be new to you.
Heidi has been entertaining
audiences both locally and
abroad, and featuring on
national and local radio for a
while now. She demonstrates
storytelling songs and multiinstrumental
abilities, mixed
with a blend of humour and
class. New audiences are
captivated by her one-off
personality and gripped by
original music, which has
the unusual quality of
feeling familiar to the
Heidi Browne
Michaela Wylde Writes ...
Heidi, thank you
for taking time
out of your busy
recording and gig
schedule to talk to Shrop
Rocks. You've written a
lot of fantastic songs,
what have you found
inspires you to write?
I think as a song writer
you need to have your
eyes and ears open at all
times to feelings and
ideas. Anything can
inspire a song, whether
it's an inside or outside
source. I can be inspired
by a mood, a weather
condition, a change in
life. I tend to write in
moments of quiet and
snatch these
opportunities to write.
You have to go off into a
sideways space and tap
P18 WWW.SHROPROCKS.COM MAY/JUN
into the bubbles of ideas
that are waiting to be
released.
Of everything you've
written, is there one
song you are particularly
proud of?
One song I have never
dropped from the set
over my many years of
performing is 'This
Wandering Heart'. It's
got a lot of light and
shade, interesting
chords and sophisticated
melody. I wrote it 10
years ago and I think it
might be my best song.
If you are able to
pinpoint one moment so
far in your music career,
what's been a particular
'high' for you?
Meeting Terry Wogan
was amazing. I was
playing Elton John's
piano which is in the
lobby of BBC Radio 2
where I was rehearsing
for a live session with
Thea Gilmore. We were
on air in 45 minutes and
I saw the reection of
someone in the shiny
piano, turned around
and it was Terry with a
tray of confectionary.
My heart literally
stopped. We played live
on his show and he put
us all at ease. An
absolute charmer. The
rst time I heard my
name announced on
radio was also amazing,
I went cold and felt
terried and elated at
the same time.
I can imagine that was an amazing
experience for you! As someone who is
regularly working on both disciplines,
if you had to make a choice, would you
rather perform live or record in the
studio?
If I could only ever do one of those
ever again, it would be recording. I
love trying out lots of ideas, layering
up instruments, adding my own
harmonies, creating a perfect whole
product. I am a perfectionist when it
comes to my performance and I love
the discipline of getting everything
right, then having something you can
keep forever. You may play a perfect
rendition of a song at a live concert
and have no record of it, which in a
way is a beautiful thing, but it's so
nice to have something physical for
posterity.
For anyone reading this who hasn't
seen you perform before, what can
people expect from a Heidi Browne
show?
Each show is different. Depending on
the line up my style can shift between
softer to more rocky. I've just got a
new electric guitar so the sound is
evolving and moving away from folk.
In a larger band line up I sometimes
move off guitar and piano onto ute
and violin. I just love creating an
atmosphere and giving each song its
own identity. Sometimes I get the
audience to join in. I love a bit of
choral or rhythmic interaction. In
between songs I tend to be quite
sarcastic and tell people my life story.
I treat an audience as an intimate
group of friends, no matter how many
people are there.
So, what is next for you? Are you
working on any new material?
I'm just recording my newest album. I
am so excited with how it's going.
We're pushing the boundaries into new
genres and my voice has matured so
much since the rst album, 5 years
ago. I can't wait to get it out there.
The album should be nished by
Summer and we have festival gigs
lined up as well as some big things in
the ofng, both in the UK and
abroad… so watch this space.
It is fair to say that we are very
excited to hear what's in store from
HAS THE NET CLOSED IN
From Merseybeat to grunge, it is doubtful any
major local music scene would have had the
same impact in the age of the internet and the
'bedroom musician'. Will there ever be another
Madchester?
nce upon a
Otime, sounds
were attached
to places. Rock'n'roll
travelled the Atlantic
and docked at
Liverpool, giving birth
to Merseybeat.
Manchester married
raving and rock music,
and spawned
Madchester. Grunge
formed under Seattle's
gloomy skies and then
took over the world.
The local scene – the
notion of several bands
and musicians from the
same area
appropriating a similar
style of records –
would begin with
friends listening to the
same music and
forming bands that
would play in the same
clubs, before record
labels, DJs and writers
would take note, at
this point a city's
bands would nd
themselves, the centre
of worldwide attention.
These local genres
weren't always as
denitive as legend
would have it: many of
them appeared by
accident before being
written into history.
Phil Saxe managed the
Happy Mondays before
Madchester's heyday in
the late 80s and early
90s, and went on to
promote new music at
Manchester's industry
showcase, In the City.
"When the Mondays
rst started,
Mancunians weren't
interested," he says. "It
took off in London,
particularly with the
London journalism
intelligentsia. But
calling it Madchester
makes it a local scene.
If Madchester's music
had been called
'ecstasy music' or
something, would the
link with Manchester
be as strong as it is
now?"
ON THE LOCAL SCENE ??
Madchester
1993
he idea of the local scene has
Talways been an attractive
prospect, playing on tribal
mentalities and a very human desire for
order. It has helped dene emerging
music, and in doing so, endowed places
with certain musical characteristics
that come to be seen as inalienable
(play musical word association, and see
what comes after Seattle). But recently,
local scenes seem to be dying out. With
the advent of the internet, the way we
consume and create music has changed.
We still turn to genres to help dene
sound, but these days these scenes are
often built on artists who share
nothing in terms of geography –
disparate bedroom artists such as
Washed Out, Toro Y Moi and Memory
Tapes nd themselves lumped together
under the "chillwave" banner by
bloggers and internet communities
drawing parallels in sound, though
their bedrooms are hundreds of miles
apart.
Crucial to this process has been the
slow death of physical music. Where
scenes collided in the past, it was often
round a record shop or a club where
people could hear particular sounds. In
the late 80s, for example, regulars at
the Hacienda were able to hear the
Chicago house and Detroit techno
imports that underpinned Madchester.
Right up to the mid-90s, people would
ask their friends for recommendations
and share mixtapes, even if those
friends were obsessives like High
Fidelity's Dick and Barry, championing
anything obscure and ridiculing the
ignorant. The internet, and all it entails
– MySpace, social networking, lesharing,
blogs – has destroyed the
importance of the physical ownership
of music. Now, everyone has access to
every kind of music, digitally and
instantly. We no longer depend on other
people and their imports, club nights
and mixtapes to discover new sounds.
MAY/JUNE SHROPROCKS.COM P23
Where local scenes were built on bands
who had honed their skills in the clubs
of their hometown before the wider
world even knew of their existence,
bedroom musicians are now nding
success through the internet before
they've even stepped outside their front
door– presenting them with new
problems.
Even in a world in which everything is
changing, some things are constant: we
still want to hear musicians play live,
and we still look to people to lter the
proliferation of new ideas. I’m sure that
even if the internet has made the death
of the local scene possible, it's not
inevitable. "The internet is all very well
but it merely spreads information.
People are still restricted because they
haven't been digitalised. And its people
who make the decisions, people."
THE GOLD ROOM
THE
REAL
ROBIN
HOOD
Sir Humphrey Kynaston
About 400 years ago, the rural
landscape of Shropshire could
be a dangerous place to be.
But nowhere was as dangerous as
Nesscliffe, the lair of the notorious
highwayman Sir Humphrey Kynaston.
Back in the 1500s, Shrewsbury made
its fortune on the wool trade.
Wool merchants based in the town
bought Welsh cloth at Oswestry
Market, then took it back to their
home town to be made into clothes.
Trading these clothes in London
reigned in fat prots for Shrewsbury
merchants, who built themselves ne
timber houses.
However, it wasn't all plain sailing for
these merchants. Trading meant
carrying large quantities of gold and
silver to Oswestry.
And Nesscliffe, with its high wooded
hill, was just the place for the
enterprising highwaymen to relieve
them of it.
Highwaymen would wait on Nesscliffe
Hill, where they could see the
approaching merchant's horses, before
attacking.
And the pub just east of the village,
the Wolf's Head, was well-known as a
meeting place for all sorts of
criminals.
Of all the highwaymen who terrorised
the road between Shrewsbury and
Oswestry, Sir Humphrey Kynaston
was the most feared.
MAY/JUNE SHROPROCKS.COM P33
Sir Humphrey was a bit of a tearaway
at the best of times, but things went
seriously off the rails when he
inherited the family home of Myddle Castle.
Unfortunately for Sir Humphrey, he couldn't
afford to keep the castle as well as continue
with his lifestyle. Outlawed for his debts, Sir
Humphrey abandoned the castle and went on
the run, setting up home in the sandstone
caves above Nesscliffe.
It was here, according to legend, that the
outlaw lived with his horse, evading all
attempts of capture.
In the true mould of the robber-hero, Sir
Humphrey is said to have stolen from the
rich in order to give to the poor who lived
nearby.
In return they protected him, providing him
and his horse with food.
Some stories even claim Sir Humphrey's
horse was the devil himself. One account
claims the horse was called Beelzebub!
Kynaston and his horse made an unbeatable
team, and many of the stories about this
dynamic duo credited them with superhuman
abilities.
For example, the local lawmen once set a
trap for the highwayman at Montford
Bridge. The structure crossing the Severn in
the village, these days, was built by Thomas
Telford in the early 1800s, but in the time of
Sir Humphrey, it was made of stone and
wood.
The sheriff and his men removed the planks
from the bridge, leaving a gaping hole, and
waited for their man. On arriving at the
bridge and sensing a trap, Sir Humphrey
spurred his horse on, jumped the gaping
hole and escaped.
On another occasion, Sir Humphrey is said
to have jumped his horse from the top of
Nesscliffe and landed at Ellesmere - nine
miles away!
There's even a section of the
Severn, 40 feet wide, called
Kynaston's leap, where the
highwayman is said to have jumped
the river.
One day, so the legend goes, he
found a man sitting in his seat at
the Nesscliffe pub, so he calmly
went over to him, drew his pistol
and shot the man dead before
escaping up a chimney.
After a lifetime of evading the law,
Sir Humphrey died of illness in his
cave.
The cave can still be visited today.
Steps cut into the red sandstone
lead up to a cave split into two,
although erosion has meant that a
wooden staircase is now used to
get into the cave.
Intriguingly the initials H K and
the date 1564 are carved into the
rocks.
And if you visit the Old Three
Pigeons pub in Nesscliffe, Sir
Humphrey's seat, reputedly taken
from the cave, is part of the
replace!
BETH HEMMINGS WRITES
The Idolins have released two
albums: Bridges and You
Said that have received a
marvelous critical reception.
Including air time on BBC Radio 2
and other BBC Introducing
channels. Which leads us to our
soothing melodic masterpiece- the
Idolin's newest single, Seasons.
From the rst enthralling stroke of
Nick and Karen's guitars and the
beautiful harmonious violins,
Seasons captivates you- ready to
throw you into that total space of
calm and eclipses any woes. The
adept blend of ear seducing
melodies and Karen's poignant
story-telling lyrics is a fantastic
demonstration of why the genre of
folk is becoming less niche and ever
more popular.
In comparison to The Idolin's
previous EP Nothing Missing from
album “Bridges” it is evident that
Nottingham's folketes have
developed their sound somewhat.
Seasons seems to embody more of a
vigorous passion and sentimentwhich
also brilliantly coincides
with the gorgeous accompanying
music video.
So if Seasons has not yet touched
your soul in ways you'd never
thought possible of a folk song, it is
time to gateway into this vibrant
genre and allow the awlessness of
Seasons to let your woes oat away
with the wind.
We all long for those
moments of total calm
sometimes. When life's day to
day events become day to day
struggles and all you want to
do is drop everything and
book the next available ight
to the Bahamas. So, when
those moments hit you with
a urrying amplitude, how
do you shake them? Perhaps
you have a happy place
within your mind, perhaps
you'll meditate or practice a
spot of yoga. Or maybe you're
more like me and nd the
calm within soothing melodic
masterpieces.
Recently, the stress of
university has been stacking
up as high as the books on
my reading list. So I've been
nding myself searching the
farthest scopes of the
internet to nd my soothing
melodic masterpiece- and I
think I've found it. It lays
within the narrative charms
of Nottingham's Folk ve
piece, The Idolins.
What started off as a duo,
with Karen Smalley and
Claudine West, The Idolins
started their musical
renditions in 2010. Soon
after, current guitarist and
friend of Karen's, Nick Scott
joined the band. Enabling
songwriter Karen to add
further dimension to their
tracks with the inclusion of
male harmony. In 2012,
peppy percussionist Mark
Rice was inducted into the
band. In the same year, The
Idolins then became a
fantastic ve piece when
cellist Hannah Barrs joined
the bill.
We’ve been expecting to review
Social Confusion for a few
months now, and we’re
delighted to say that they have nally
arisen to the top of our to do pile. New
releases “Keep on trying” and
“Reection” stays true to this popular
Shropshire four-piece’s rock roots,
there’s a more serious side and
enthralling concept to these strong,
catchy tracks. Having been on a break
from playing in 2014/15 the band
return in style.
For it's not for lack of skill. The band
proffers melodies as imposing as
Romanesque architecture, solid and
symmetrical. Mat Spence on guitar and
vox, Rob Flynn on guitar and vox, Wil
Blase on bass and Chris Symonds on
drums have all contributed to the
mechanics of rock songwriting, from
the cool guitar tone hooks that
announces nearly every song they've
recorded to the reassurance of a chorus
to the revitalizing contrast of a bridge.
Their arrangements ascend and surge,
measuring out the song's yearning and
tension, cresting and easing back and
then moving towards a resolution.
Social Confusion are meticulously
unied, and their songs have been
rigorously cleared of anything that
distracts from the musical drama.
Social Confusion will be playing at the
awesome Rock ‘n’ Bowl Festival this
year, so go check them out !!
