Assessment of the impact of effluent disposal in river ravi at lahore on the water quality for irrigation and recreational purposes at upstream of Balloki Barrage, Pakistan

Abstract This paper focuses on the effluent impact on River Ravi received by it from the Lahore city at a number of locations upstream of Balloki Barrage located at 60 km downstream. The Qadirabad-Balloki link canal carries about 18,000 cusecs freshwater from the Chenab River into River Ravi at 5 km upstream of Balloki barrage, thus diluting it. River Ravi water quality was determined by sampling over a year including the periods of maximum, average and minimum river flows. Sampling was carried out at the six major drains near their disposal point and in River Ravi at Lahore Bridge (upstream boundary and control for this research), at Balloki barrage in main river channel and in Balloki-Sulemanki offtake link canal. The samples were analyzed for EC, SAR, RSC, TDS, anions (SO4-, Cl-, CO3-2), cations (Ca+, Mg+, Na-), and heavy metals (Fe, Cu, Cr, Ni) for irrigation purposes and DO, pH, EC,COD, BOD, TDS,SO4- and heavy metals (Fe, Cu, Cr, Ni) for recreational purposes. Samples coordinates were taken by Global Positioning System. The results were compared with FAO and WWF guidelines for Pakistan for irrigational use and with WWF guidelines for recreational use of water. Consequently, river water quality at the Balloki Barrage was acceptable during average and high flows and was deviating the standards during low flows.The dilution does not work during low flows and requires alternate solution to make the water quality acceptable. Also the drains being used for bathing and swimming for recreation is unsafe for such type of activities.

Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>Pakistan</strong> is <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world’s most arid countries,<br />

with an average ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>fall <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 240 mm a year. The<br />

popul<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ec<strong>on</strong>omy are heavily dependent<br />

<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> annual entry <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Indus <str<strong>on</strong>g>river</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

westerns <str<strong>on</strong>g>river</str<strong>on</strong>g>s c<strong>on</strong>tribute144.91 MAF <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er while<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> eastern <str<strong>on</strong>g>river</str<strong>on</strong>g>s br<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g 9.14MAF (MoE, 2005)<br />

A large scale <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> unc<strong>on</strong>trolled polluti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<strong>Pakistan</strong> is due to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>creas<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g quantity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

pesticides <strong>and</strong> fertilizers <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> run<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f to meet <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

dem<strong>and</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>creas<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g popul<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> urban sprawl.<br />

N<strong>on</strong> functi<strong>on</strong>al <strong>and</strong> poorly work<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g factories <strong>and</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dustries dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir <str<strong>on</strong>g>effluent</str<strong>on</strong>g>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>river</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ravi <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

vic<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lahore <strong>and</strong> its surround<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g areas (Briscoe<br />

<strong>and</strong> Qamar, 2008). In <strong>Pakistan</strong> per capita w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er<br />

availability is decreas<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> an alarm<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g r<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>e. In 1951<br />

per capita availability <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er was 5300 m 3 , which<br />

has now decreased to 850 m 3 <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2013 <strong>and</strong> is expected<br />

to decrease to 659 m 3 by 2025. The exist<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er<br />

resources are under thre<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> due to untre<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed discharge<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> municipal <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dustrial wastes to <str<strong>on</strong>g>river</str<strong>on</strong>g>s <strong>and</strong> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />

surface w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er reservoirs (MoE, 2005).<br />

The Ravi River which has <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> smallest c<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>chment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<strong>Pakistan</strong>’s Rivers is 894 km l<strong>on</strong>g with a c<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>chment<br />

area <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 39,680 km 2 . The municipal <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dustrial<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>effluent</str<strong>on</strong>g>s are discharged <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> River through 6 major<br />

dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lahore <strong>and</strong> its surround<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs. In additi<strong>on</strong>,<br />

untre<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed municipal <str<strong>on</strong>g>effluent</str<strong>on</strong>g>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lahore city <strong>and</strong><br />

Shahadra are disposed <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> River. The<br />

discharge <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> untre<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed municipal <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dustrial<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>effluent</str<strong>on</strong>g>s has c<strong>on</strong>verted <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> River <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>to a sludge carrier<br />

(Ayesha, 2001).<br />

allowable <str<strong>on</strong>g>effluent</str<strong>on</strong>g> st<strong>and</strong>ards. Accord<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> l<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>est<br />

report, by 2009, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ma<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> City outfall <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ravi is<br />

highly polluted by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> untre<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed communal<br />

wastew<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er. Accord<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> liter<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ure, Ravi is just<br />

like a wastew<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er carrier with high discharge<br />

vari<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 270-81,000 ft 3 /sec <strong>and</strong> approxim<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ely<br />

750 ft 3 /sec <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> untre<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed <str<strong>on</strong>g>effluent</str<strong>on</strong>g> is be<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g added to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>river</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Pump<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g st<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> "Shadbagh", "Chota<br />

Ravi","Ma<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Outfall" <strong>and</strong> "Multan Road" are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

ma<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tributors to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>river</str<strong>on</strong>g> polluti<strong>on</strong>. Accord<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g to<br />

W<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er <strong>and</strong> Sewerage Authority (WASA) Lahore, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

accumul<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ive estim<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed discharge from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se<br />

pump<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g st<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong>s is approxim<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ely 1650 cusecs (Ejaz<br />

et al., 2011).<br />

The polluti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> River Ravi is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> highest <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>river</str<strong>on</strong>g>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Pakistan</strong>. Most waste w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er discharges <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>river</str<strong>on</strong>g> reach between Lahore <strong>and</strong> <strong>Balloki</strong>, a length <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 62<br />

km (Ahmad <strong>and</strong> Ali, 2000). The <str<strong>on</strong>g>river</str<strong>on</strong>g> presently<br />

receives 47% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> total municipal <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dustrial<br />

polluti<strong>on</strong> load discharged <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>to all <str<strong>on</strong>g>river</str<strong>on</strong>g>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Pakistan</strong>.<br />

In Lahore, six major wastew<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> are Chota<br />

Ravi dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>, Sagian dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>, Gulshan-e-Ravi dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>, Mian<br />

Mir dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>, Babu Sabu dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>and</strong> Kharak dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> outfall<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>river</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> downstream <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ravi Bridge (Sami,<br />

2001).The wastew<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er from eastern <strong>and</strong> sou<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rn<br />

Lahore is carried by Hudiara dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> also dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s its<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>effluent</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>river</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ravi. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>impact</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this<br />

polluti<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> degrad<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er <strong>quality</strong> gre<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ly<br />

effects flora, fauna <strong>and</strong> also to human be<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g through<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> food cha<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>river</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ravi has been<br />

used <strong>for</strong> irrig<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> s<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce many years (Ali, 2003).<br />

<strong>Balloki</strong> <strong>Barrage</strong> is loc<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed <strong>on</strong> River Ravi <str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> about 60<br />

km downstream <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lahore city (Fig. 1). The <strong>Barrage</strong><br />

aims <str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> divert<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> part flow from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>river</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>for</strong><br />

irrig<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> uses. Due to w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er shortages <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> River <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

post-dam era, Q-B L<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>k was c<strong>on</strong>structed to supply<br />

about 600 m 3 /sec w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er to River Ravi <str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> about 5 km<br />

<strong>upstream</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Balloki</strong> <strong>Barrage</strong> (NESPAK, 1998).<br />

This w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er is diverted to B-S L<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>k <str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Balloki</strong> <strong>Barrage</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> downstream. The B-S L<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>k is a ma<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> source <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

freshw<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er <strong>for</strong> agriculture, animal w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> more than 10 milli<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> irrig<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>es milli<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

hectares <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> l<strong>and</strong> (NESPAK, 1998). At <strong>Balloki</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>river</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er <strong>quality</strong> improves through augment<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> flow<br />

from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> QB L<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>k canal (Ahmad <strong>and</strong> Ali, 2000). Here<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> BOD values are low (2.3 - 3.9 mg/l), dissolved<br />

oxygen (DO) ranges from 6.2 to 8.2 mg/l, total<br />

dissolved solids (TDS) are between 98 <strong>and</strong> 225 mg/l<br />

<strong>and</strong> sodium absorpti<strong>on</strong> r<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>io (SAR) varies from 0.1 to<br />

0.55 (Pearce et al, 1998). At this po<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>t, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>river</str<strong>on</strong>g> w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er<br />

meets <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>quality</strong> requirements <strong>for</strong> irrig<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er.<br />

The high levels <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> faecal coli<strong>for</strong>ms are, however, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

c<strong>on</strong>cern <strong>for</strong> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er uses (Ahmad <strong>and</strong> Ali, 2000).<br />

city dur<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g this period. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>effluent</str<strong>on</strong>g> is a major source<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> polluti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> freshw<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>river</str<strong>on</strong>g> (Pearce et al.,<br />

1998). However, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>river</str<strong>on</strong>g> w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er <strong>quality</strong> varies around<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> year depend<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> quantity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> freshw<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er<br />

flows <strong>and</strong> its diluti<strong>on</strong> effect. The worst scenario is<br />

likely to occur dur<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g canal closure period, when<br />

canal <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>flows <strong>and</strong> outflows <str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Balloki</strong> barrage is zero<br />

or <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>significant. Dur<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g this time <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>effluent</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Lahore can have detrimental effects, if any, <strong>on</strong> w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er<br />

<strong>quality</strong>. There<strong>for</strong>e, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> study was c<strong>on</strong>ducted dur<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

high flow, normal flow <strong>and</strong> low flow. Two canals <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f<br />

take from <strong>Balloki</strong> <strong>Barrage</strong> i.e. Sulemanki L<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>k canal<br />

(B-S l<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>k) <strong>and</strong> Lower Bari Doab Canal (LBDC) , which<br />

serve lower Punjab areas <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sahiwal <strong>and</strong><br />

Bahawalnagar <strong>for</strong> irrig<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong>, animal w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong><br />

domestic uses <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> certa<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> loc<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong>s. The c<strong>on</strong>t<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ued<br />

discharge <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dustrial <strong>and</strong> domestic <str<strong>on</strong>g>effluent</str<strong>on</strong>g>s may<br />

result <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> severe accumul<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tam<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ants.<br />

This may affect <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lives <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> human as well as animals<br />

around this <str<strong>on</strong>g>river</str<strong>on</strong>g> (Kumar <strong>and</strong> Krishna, 2011). Hence,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is an urgent need to tre<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>effluent</str<strong>on</strong>g>s be<strong>for</strong>e<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> f<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>al discharge. Be<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g a first <strong>for</strong>mal w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er<br />

withdrawal po<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>t <str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> downstream <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lahore <strong>and</strong> ma<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

source <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er services to downstream areas, it was<br />

imper<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ive to assess <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>impact</str<strong>on</strong>g>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lahore <str<strong>on</strong>g>effluent</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>Pakistan</strong> has an agriculture dependent ec<strong>on</strong>omy. So<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> order to meet <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> domestic needs as well as to<br />

gener<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>e <strong>for</strong>eign exchange, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re must be extensive<br />

<strong>and</strong> susta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>able agriculture <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> country. The l<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>es<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> agriculture are primarily based up<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> irrig<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong><br />

w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er availability <strong>and</strong> its <strong>quality</strong>. The availability must<br />

be adequ<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>e to meet <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> needs <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>quality</strong> must<br />

be such th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> it must not produce crops th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> are<br />

hazardous <strong>for</strong> human health (Van der Hoek et al.,<br />

1999) <strong>and</strong> must not cause w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er logg<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <strong>and</strong> sal<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ity<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> soils. This is especially important because raw<br />

sewage w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er is also used <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> irrig<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong>. So <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

guidel<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>es given <strong>for</strong> irrig<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er <strong>quality</strong> must be<br />

strictly followed.<br />

Excessive ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>fall leads to a huge amount <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> diluti<strong>on</strong><br />

The rest <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> parameters<br />

between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> study reach showed an <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>creased level <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

EC, TDS, c<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> ani<strong>on</strong>s, chromium, ir<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> nickel.<br />

The worst c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s were found <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Chotta Ravi,<br />

Saggian, Gulshan-e-Ravi <strong>and</strong> Mian Meer Dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>. In<br />

Kharak Dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>, <strong>on</strong>ly chromium exceeded <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> guidel<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>es<br />

given by WWF <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> additi<strong>on</strong> to EC <strong>and</strong> TDS. While <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Hadiara Dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>, pH <strong>and</strong> Nickel also exceeded <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> limits<br />

set by FAO <strong>and</strong> WWF guidel<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>es (Table 2). Around <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

periphery <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lahore, most <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> vegetables c<strong>on</strong>sumed<br />

by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> masses <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> city are grown al<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s<br />

very nasty <strong>and</strong> bad odor <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> decompos<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g organic<br />

waste <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> air. At <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>trol <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re was a fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />

decrease <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> EC, TDS, c<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> ani<strong>on</strong>s but this<br />

decrease was not enough to br<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> values with<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> permissible limit <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> FAO. Am<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> heavy<br />

metals, copper <strong>and</strong> chromium exceeded <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> FAO as<br />

well as WWF limits. Copper is known to be toxic to<br />

plants if present <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> irrig<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er. Same was <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

situ<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> decrease <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> EC <strong>and</strong><br />

In fact <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s had <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most effect <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<strong>quality</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> River <strong>and</strong> Canal dur<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g this period.<br />

As <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er flow<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g through <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> B-S L<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>k Canal <strong>and</strong><br />

w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er. EC, TDS, c<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> ani<strong>on</strong>s followed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same<br />

p<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>tern <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> decrease, while am<strong>on</strong>g heavy metals; <strong>on</strong>ly<br />

chromium exceeded <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> WWF guidel<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>es <str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> both <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

po<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ts. Accord<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> results obta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

study, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>quality</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er flow<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g through <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se<br />

po<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ts was better than th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>trol. Also, though<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>trol, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er <strong>quality</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> end po<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ts was<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a large number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> diseases prevail<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> society.<br />

This is due to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fact th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> most <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> people do not<br />

have access to clean <strong>and</strong> safe w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er <strong>for</strong> recre<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong><br />

purpose, ei<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <strong>for</strong> swimm<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g or b<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>h<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g. Dur<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

field visits, a large number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> people, especially <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

children were observed to be swimm<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g, b<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>h<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <strong>and</strong><br />

play<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s. Hence due to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se<br />

circumstances, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s were also c<strong>on</strong>sidered as<br />

recre<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> spots <strong>for</strong> masses <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> this study, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re<strong>for</strong>e<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er <strong>quality</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s is also evalu<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed accord<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> st<strong>and</strong>ards drafted by WWF <strong>Pakistan</strong> (WWF,<br />

Similarly, Chota Ravi, Sagian, Gulshan-e-Ravi,<br />

Kharak <strong>and</strong> Hudiara Dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> had decreased DO, BOD<br />

<strong>and</strong> Chromium c<strong>on</strong>centr<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> even dur<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

m<strong>on</strong>so<strong>on</strong> period. Mian Meer Dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> also showed<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>creased level <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> copper <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> additi<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> above<br />

River Ravi w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er <strong>quality</strong> dur<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g maximum diluti<strong>on</strong><br />

period was perfectly well with<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> st<strong>and</strong>ards drafted<br />

by WWF, <strong>Pakistan</strong> <strong>for</strong> recre<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong>al <strong>purposes</strong> both <str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<strong>Balloki</strong> <strong>Barrage</strong> <strong>and</strong> B-S L<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>k Canal from where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er serves a vast downstream area.<br />

The TDS decreased to an acceptable level due to<br />

m<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>imized effect <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> flood<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> br<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs with it a lot <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

dissolved solids. Also <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re was an <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>crease <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

c<strong>on</strong>centr<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> chromium due to reduced storm<br />

Thus <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y become more hazardous<br />

to be used <strong>for</strong> recre<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong>al purpose dur<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g this<br />

seas<strong>on</strong>. At B-S L<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>k Canal <strong>and</strong> <strong>Balloki</strong> <strong>Barrage</strong>, all<br />

parameters were well with<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> permissible limits except<br />

th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re was a very slight <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>crease <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chromium<br />

c<strong>on</strong>centr<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> B-S L<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>k Canal <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Balloki</strong><br />

Dur<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> canal closure period, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re was a fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />

decrease <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> value <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> DO <strong>and</strong> it fell to an<br />

alarm<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gly low level <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> less than 1 mg/l. This<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>effluent</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>ly. There is no entry <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fresh w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er to dilute<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> wastew<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er effects. All <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> six dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s with<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

study reach showed a slight decrease <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> DO <strong>and</strong><br />

slight <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>crease <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> BOD <strong>and</strong> chromium c<strong>on</strong>centr<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong><br />

as compared to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> normal flow c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s. These<br />

vari<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong>s were little as compared to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> vari<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

This is due to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fact th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> canal closure period affects<br />

po<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>t th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> devi<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed <str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>trol <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

On <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> basis <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> results <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir discussi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

outcome <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> study are as follows:<br />

1. Increased flow dur<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g m<strong>on</strong>so<strong>on</strong> seas<strong>on</strong> provides<br />

sufficient flush<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g effect <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> system but it also has<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> potential to <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>troduce stored pollutants th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

would o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rwise have rema<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> place. In<br />

particular, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is potential <strong>for</strong> disturbed soil<br />

sediments to br<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m adsorbed pollutants<br />

such as biocides. However <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> diluti<strong>on</strong> effect is such<br />

th<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se pollutants are not significant.<br />

2. W<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er <strong>quality</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> tail reach was better than <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er <strong>quality</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>trol <strong>and</strong> w<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er <strong>quality</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> B-S<br />
