Big Valley’s ‘Christmas in the Village’
Linda Stillinger,
ECA Review
Christmas is a time best spent in the
company of family and friends, and
that is exactly what the Big Valley
community did on Dec. 22.
Village and rural residents came
together to celebrate “Christmas in
the Village” with a host of events reminiscent
of days gone by.
From humble beginnings seven
years ago, the event has grown into a
community wide celebration, with a
dedicated ensemble of community
groups, businesses and volunteers
working together to make this special
event happen.
There definitely isn’t a shortage of
holiday cheer in Big Valley.
It’s all about giving back to the community
and kicking off the holiday
season in style.
As the number and variety of activities
has grown over the years, so has
the attendance.
For many, the event has become a
‘must do’ during the Christmas season
with something happening in every
corner of the village.
At the Community Hall there was
free chili and holiday treats, a last
minute Christmas shopping area and
a children’s craft table.
Throughout the evening, the Big
Valley Ukulele Club, Rosco, and the
Original Cowgirls serenaded the
crowd with Christmas carols.
Downtown businesses stayed open
late, adding to the holiday atmosphere,
while the Big Valley Inn hosted a customer
appreciation night.
Throughout the evening, horsedrawn
hay wagons transported
revellers around the village to view
the wonderful holiday lights.
After seven years, Big Valley continues
to keep “Christmas in the
Village” unique and entertaining.
Crude-by-rail
U.S. exports on
6-month high
by EnergyNow Media
Canadian crude-by-rail exports to
the United States climbed to a sixmonth
high of 137,000 barrels per day
(bpd) in October, data from the
National Energy Board showed , the
latest sign that tight pipeline capacity
is pushing more oil onto railroads.
October was the third straight
month in which rail exports climbed.
Volumes rose two per cent from
September, but were up 33 per cent
from the same month in 2016 when
Canada shipped 103,000 barrels per
day of crude by rail.
The amount of crude carried by rail
out of Canada is expected to surge next
year as Canada’s oil sands output
grows and outpaces capacity of congested
export pipelines.
Traders and loading terminal operators
reported a
boom in demand
to move crude by
rail in the final
months of 2017
after a leak on
TransCanada
Corp’s Keystone
pipeline left a
glut of crude
backlogged in
Alberta.
Data from the
U.S. Energy
Information
Administration,
also pegged
Canadian crude
by rail exports
even higher in
October, at
147,000 bpd.
