& Science (GEMS) Conference at 

UW-Waukesha 

We are excited to offer our 10th annual 

GEMS program this year as we invite our 

middle school girls and their parents, 

teachers, community leaders, and successful 

professional women together in 

an effort to boost knowledge and interest 

in various areas of math, science, and 

engineering! Girls ages 11 to 14 choose 

various hands-on workshops taught by 

successful professionals in STEM fields, and 

establish connections and friendships with 

like-minded girls of the same age group. If

to present hands-on workshops

NEW! DOTS: Digital Observation Technology Skills Ages 13-17 

The Digital Observation Technology Skills (DOTS) program is an outdoor environmental 

education lesson that uses modern mobile technology tools to connect today’s students 

to the outdoors in new and innovative ways. This inquiry-based lesson navigates the 

basics of the scientific method and focuses on the importance of good scientific communication 

and sharing discoveries with others. Students work in groups to test simple 

hypotheses from the environmental and ecological differences across the local landscape 

using data and observations collected in the field. Participants use the technology tools 

found in the DOTS kits to make observations, take measurements, explore the micro and 

macro details of their environment, and learn how to embrace their inner scientists. Please

Our new summer camps are designed to meet the needs of highly motivated children between the ages of 8-14. We are eager to provide 

safe, fun, hands-on learning that will provide a foundation of skills that students will continue to build upon throughout their lives. These 

main skills: Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking and Creativity are the 4 C’s that employers are looking for. Our goal is provide 

students with these key skills needed for success and individual growth.

One of the oldest and broadest fields of engineering, Mechanical 

deals with design and production of machine and tools. It 

fueled the industrial revolution and today mechanical engineers 

are pursuing developments in biomedics, nanotechnology, and 

mechatronics.

Computer Programming Camp! 


We experience computers and its digital creations every day. It is not 

enough to just know how to use a computer anymore. Creating, developing 

computational thinking and ability to personalize & customize 

applications to solve your problems are needed skills today. 

It is no surprise then that Computer Science represents the fastest 

growing segment of jobs in all STEM fields. Experts believe that this 

field is impacting roughly 80% of all STEM jobs directly or indirectly. 

Programs are designed to engage young minds and help them advance from being merely 

computer users to creators. This camp will consist of two workshop programs, Minecraft

Exploration for High School Students 

High school students have an opportunity 

to see first-hand the numerous career 

opportunities that a degree in Engineering 

can offer! This is the perfect venue for high 

school students who want to become an 

engineer, but are not sure what exact field 

they would like to enter. This year, we have 

added a leadership building component 

to the camp! Students will learn about the 

fields of engineering from local engineers 

and engineering students, participate 

in engineering design projects, and visit 

local businesses to observe engineers at 

work. For one week, visit a different local 

company each day, tour their facility, and 

speak with their engineers to learn what 

their day entails and how they landed 

their job position. Explore civil, electrical, 

industrial/manufacturing, mechanical, 

material, and architectural engineering.

accessible and introductory course for 

learning Spanish, then this is the course

of Spanish grammar, be able to write and

World Religions as Personality Types 


This course analyzes world religions according 

to personality type. The template 

for understanding is Carl Jung’s Psychological 

Types (1921). Jung describes eight 

types of human behavior. This course uses 

his framework to show that world religions 

behave in much the same way as people 

do. Christianity and Islam are extraverted 

in their behavior. Buddhism and Taoism 

are introverted paths to the divine. Each 

religion has a dominant personality trait as 

well as a dark side. Integration of the shadow 

brings balance to a religion. Repression 

of the shadow causes warped behavior. 

Dysfunctional religions do not contribute 

to world peace.Only well-integrated 

ones do. Roman Catholicism, for example, 

exudes feelings of love and compassion, 

especially to society’s least fortunate. 

These extraverted feelings are balanced by 

a strain of introverted thinking. Roman Catholicism’s 

shadow shows up in its concern 

for moral theology, especially hot-button 

social issues like abortion, contraception 

and homosexuality. When world religions 

gain insight into their personality type 

and integrate their shadows, they work 

at optimal levels. This course explains the 

whole process.

This ceramic workshop focuses on the 

production of clay objects that will be fired 

in the Waterville wood-fired kiln at the 

Sherman building at the UW-Waukesha 

Field Station. Explore the various techniques 

applicable to clay, hand building 

by coil and slab as well as throwing on the 

wheel to ultimately create a body of work 

reflecting one’s personal style or aesthetic. 

The wood-fired workshop firing will collaborate 

with students from the UW-Milwaukee 

wood-fired workshop course taught by 

Chris Davis-Benavides. Participants will be 

responsible for signing up for firing shifts 

during the kiln firing. Students will also 

process wood for fueling the kiln. Each firing 

consumes approximately five cords of

This drama program is specifically built for those adults (age 17 and up) with autism and 

other developmental disabilities residing in Southeast Wisconsin interested in flexing their 

imaginations and stretching their interactive skills in a supportive and trusting environment. 

By engaging in this creative program, students will develop more flexible thinking 

while improving emotional recognition and containment. These improvisation exercises, 

built from personal circumstances, will allow students to devise and create their own 

unique workshop production. This program is created in conjunction with ACAP (Adap¬tive 

Community Approach Program) of Waukesha, WI. By playing theatre games and performing 

imaginative exercises, our student actors learn to trust others and gain self-confidence 

as they begin immersion in environments such as college or the workplace. These 

thespians will participate in lively activities within a supportive, structured environment

Our nation’s capital attracts over 15 million 

visitors each year…and for good reason. 

Our Continuing Education is happy to add 

to that number in 2018 with our group 

of life-long learners. We will travel on 

a comfortable coach bus and have the 

convenience of easy and safe transportation 

for our entire visit. During the day, 

we’ll tour the U.S. Capital, the Library of 

Congress. In evening, we will tour and see 

shows at Ford’s Theater (The Wiz) and the 

Kennedy Center (In the Heights) and visit 

the monuments in all their glory, illuminated

THE ADIRONDACKS 

UW Colleges is considering taking a group 

on an adventure to the Adirondacks next 

fall. We hope to spend a couple of days 

in North Creek, NY and then a couple in 

Lake Placid. We’ll explore the splendor of 

autumn colors, waterfalls and the Adirondacks 

mountains and do some railbiking 

with Revolution Rail Company, a fun 

excursion activity that allows you to ride 

the railroad tracks under your own power 

and explore a section of the Adirondacks 

that has never seen passenger traffic. Send

In the spirit of the past seven years of our 

Blues and Greens foodie tours, UW Colleges 

Southeast Region is proud to present 

our eighth entry, Asheville and Nashville: 

Culture and Cuisine! We again paired the 

music and art scene of two great cities 

with some of their most famous restaurants. 

Have shrimp and grits and hot chicken 

(don’t worry) in Nashville and listen to 

the best music in the country. Eat farm-totable, 

creative dishes and visit galleries and 

mansions in Asheville. Heck, we’ll spend 

three nights in the shadow of the Biltmore, 

the Vanderbilt mansion. In Nashville, we’ll 

visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and 

Museum, Bicentennial Capital Mall, the 

Gulch District, the Parthenon and more. 

We’ll see shows at the Grand Ole Opry or 

the Ryman Auditorium (artists TBD). In 

Asheville, we’ll visit the River Arts District 

and have a special tour of the Biltmore 

Mansion. In addition, we’ll have plenty of 

time to enjoy Biltmore Village. On our way 

home, we’ll stop for a night in Cincinnati 

for our final delicious meal. Trip includes 3

Tony is internationally recognized as one 

of the world’s foremost wood engravers. 

Tony Drehfal presently serves on Wood 

Engraver's Network leadership team, which 

is now in the process of partnering with 

the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum 

to create a wood engraving exhibit, 

classroom & library space within their Two 

Rivers museum. At the museum, we will 

receive a guided tour of the world’s largest 

premier wood type collection. A tour of 

Still Bend will round out our experience in 

Two Rivers. The Bernard Schwartz House is 

also known as Still Bend or FLW’s Life Magazine
