Common photography terms and abbreviations
Just as there is in any industry, photography has a whole host of abbreviations and specic
terms that are in common use. Here is a short list of some of the most frequently used ones
that you may see in posts or literature.
A or AV - Aperture / Aperture Value . This is normally denoted by an f number or f
stop. The aperture of your lens is the hole in the middle that lets light through.
Confusingly, the higher the number, the smaller the hole. You will normally see it written
as f2.8 or F/8.0 etc
AE or Auto - Automatic Exposure. The camera measures how bright the subject is and
then sets the the camera up to take what it thinks will be the best image. It will change the
sensitivity of the sensor, the shutter speed and the aperture of the lens. This is a quick and
easy way to capture an image with a high chance of it coming out ok but it leaves the
photographer with no creative control of the result.
