Common photography terms and abbreviations
STU – Shoot Through Umbrella – A translucent umbrella that is placed in front of the
ash to create a much larger light source. Very good for softening the light and making it
more flattering. Very cheap, easy to use and will probably be your first modifier.
TTL – Through The Lens – Metering the level of light after it has passed through the
lens. You will often see speedlights with a TTL designation which means that they can be
adjusted automatically by the cameras settings to alter their power to suit the image.
WB – White Balance – This has to do with the temperature of the ambient light. It will
allow the camera to make adjustments to the image to ensure that whites look white with
no hint of colour in them.
This list is by no means exhaustive but it will answer most of those “Eh?” Questions you
may have when reading or viewing content.
