Another year, another time for 

marketing, business evaluation and 

action plans to grow and sustain the 

business and for some, a new venture 

into business. 

North Wales has won various 

accolades for tourism and places of 

natural beauty, but when it comes to 

business, jobs and unemployment, I’m 

not sure how good the statistics are on 

this subject. However, as I go around 

from place to place, I see more and 

more businesses popping up here and 

there, and on the other hand, I also see 

quite a few empty shops where there 

were once businesses trading from. 

All indications are that there is major 

uncertainty within the whole U.K since 

the Brexit negotiations and that 

uncertainty has spilled out into the 

business community at large. Still, the 

show must go on, people will continue 

to trade, to live, to rise above the 

negative and pursue their 

ambitions...So I guess the only thing to 

do is carry on regardless. After all local 

business is the life blood of any 

community.

What are time management skills and why are they 

important to employers? 

Time management means working efficiently, and employers 

in every industry look for staff who 

can make optimal use of the time available to them on the job. 

time saves the organization money and increases revenue. 

Why Employers Want Strong Time Management Skills 

Employees who manage their time well are more productive, more efficient, and more likely to 

meet deadlines. 

They focus on the most important and time sensitive tasks and limit the amount of time wasted on 

non-essential duties. 

Effective time management requires staff to analyze their workload, assign priorities, and maintain 

focus on productive endeavors. Employees who are excellent time managers can eliminate 

distractions and enlist support from colleagues to help accomplish their goals. 

During a Job Interview 

Time management skills, like other soft skills, are in demand. Interviewers will be asking questions 

to assess your ability to manage your time, and the time of your team if you’re in a supervisory 

role.

Top Time Management Skills 

Prioritizing 

It is usually impossible to do every single that you need and want to do all at once, but if you 

prioritize well, you should be able to complete the most important tasks in an order that makes 

sense. 

When assigning priority, consider such factors as when each task needs to be done, how long it 

might take, how important it might be to others in the organization, what could happen if a task is 

not done, and whether any task might be interrupted by the need to wait for someone else. 

Scheduling 

Scheduling is important, and not only because some tasks have to be done at specific times. 

Scheduling affects your day, your week, your month, as well as other people, their projects, and 

their short and long term plans for projects and tasks. Most people also have specific times of the 

day when they are more and less energetic, and become more productive when they schedule 

themselves accordingly. Schedules can be a good way to avoid procrastination, too.

Keeping a To-Do List 

To-do lists (properly prioritized and integrated with your schedule) are a great way to avoid forgetting 

something important. They are also a great way to avoid spending all day thinking about everything you 

have to do. Remembering tasks takes energy, and thinking about everything you have to do all week can 

be exhausting and overwhelming. Split all the necessary tasks up into a list for each day, and you won’t 

have to worry about any of it anymore. Just look at today’s list. 

Resting 

Resting, even though it may seem contradictory, is an important time-management skill. Although working 

long hours or skipping breaks can sometimes improve productivity in the short-term, your exhaustion later 

will ensure that your average productivity actually drops. Except for rare emergencies, it is important to 

resist the temptation to over-work. 

Include necessary breaks, and a sensible quitting time, in your schedule. 

Delegation 

Depending on what type of work you do, you may be able to delegate some tasks. Knowing what to 

delegate and when is a skill. Some people resist delegating, either because they want to maintain control or 

because they want to save money by not hiring assistants. Both approaches ultimately hurt productivity and 

raise costs. 

Remember too, however, that if you practice time management diligently and still can’t get everything done, 

you may be trying to do too much. It is better to succeed at a few tasks than to attempt and then fail at 

many.

Accessing funding remains one of the toughest 

challenges for small businesses. You may need funds 

to help you to invest in and grow your business, but 

these days, finance is becoming more and more 

difficult to acquire. This guide outlines some of the 

main business funding options for small businesses. 

Personal savings & loans from friends and family 

If you’re just starting up then personal savings and 

informal loans from friends and family remain a 

common form of funding. This option perhaps isn’t 

suitable if you’ve been trading for a while. 

Friends and family may be prepared to help you out with a small informal loan or perhaps 

might even invest in your business for a share of its ownership. 

Be warned however, that personal relationships can be affected and it might be worth putting 

in place a simple loan agreement, so that both parties know where they stand. 

Overdrafts 

You may be able to negotiate an overdraft with your bank for an agreed maximum amount. 

This will allow you to temporarily borrow funds that you do not have in your bank account. 

Interest will be charged on these funds, so this option may only be suitable for borrowing small 

amounts for short periods of time. Further information on managing your cash flow is available 

from BAYWAVES. It is worth noting that an overdraft can be recalled in full at any time by the bank. 

Loans 

Business loans are available from high street banks and it’s worth comparing loan offers 

including those not from your own bank for the best deal. Loan offers will vary dependant on 

your own personal and business circumstances and you should seriously consider whether you 

will be able to meet any repayments before entering into a loan agreement. Consideration 

should be given to the amount that you may need to borrow, what the interest will be, the 

repayment period and what you can afford to pay back. It is not unusual for a business loan to 

be secured against an asset such as your house. It is important to carefully plan your finances 

before considering a business loan. In addition to banks a number of other institutions offer 

loans and it is worth considering these alongside the High Street banks. 

Enterprise Finance Guarantee 

The Enterprise Finance Guarantee is aimed at improving the availability of working capital and 

investment funding. If you are a viable business that has been unsure about applying for a loan, 

or has had a borrowing request declined due to a lack of security, the Enterprise Finance 

Guarantee may be an option for your lender (likely to be a high street bank). Further

Start-Up Loans 

The Start-Up Loans initiative is a government funded scheme to provide advice, business loans 

and mentoring to start-up businesses. Loans from £1000 to £2500 are available at competitive 

rates to individuals who are yet to launch their business or those that have been trading for up 

to 12 months. 

Credit Cards 

A credit card might offer a suitable short-term finance option but they are not suitable for 

long-term borrowing. Some cards offer short term, introductory, interest free offers. If you are 

certain that the balance can be paid off before the offer runs out then this can be cost 

effective. However, interest rates rise sharply, above those of overdrafts and loans if you cannot 

settle the balance. 

While many credit card providers discourage the use of personal credit cards for business 

purposes, there are now a number of credit card offers specifically targeted at new business 

owners. 

Local Authorities 

Your local Economic Development Department may offer financial support to businesses 

including grants and loans. It’s worth checking out the business pages on your Local Authority’s 

website to see if there are any current schemes running. 

Grant Funding 

Government grant schemes are not as abundant as they once were but a number of grant 

and loan schemes remain available. You’ll find that schemes of this nature all have their own 

specific application criteria i.e. post code, industry sector and whether you operate business 

to business (B2B) or business to consumer (B2C). Most grants will require match funding and so 

will only make a contribution to your investment. If you have plans to grow and are wishing to 

make an investment into your business, then looking for business grants is an ideal place to start. 

Grant scheme availability remains fluid and so it’s worth checking out what may be available 

on a regular basis. 

Crowdfunding 

Crowdfunding is fast becoming a very popular alternative method of raising finance for 

start-ups and community projects, whilst developments around crowd based loans and equity 

funding mean that opportunities for growth businesses are also increasing. 

The basic concept is that the business receives small amounts of funding from a large amount 

of people via one of a number of platforms. The money pledged may be a donation, or in 

return for a reward linked to the business or project. In other cases investors will be looking for a 

return in the form of shares or interest.

Llandudno Community Radio Ltd is a charitable company 

limited by guarantee, incorporated on June 1st 2005 and 

registered as a charity on 4th November 2005. After being 

granted a full broadcasting licence from Ofcom the station

Music Events at Parc Eirias, Wales Rally GB and Tour of Britain Cycle Event. 

Tudno FM has a variety of radio shows by various dj’s and are always on the look out for shows to be

It’s bigger than just marketing transformation: “Digital transformation” is really business transformation. 

Marketers need to consider the changes in our discipline within the context of overall changes in their 

business. Being on the front line with customers gives Marketing an immense opportunity to pave the way 

for their brand to embrace being more tech-savvy, data-smart and accountable to the bottom line. 

Changing culture vs. capabilities: Many clients have recognized that the pace of disruption has increased 

the importance of change management. Transformation needs to be managed both up and down the 

organization. To generate buy-in and funding from leadership, many of our clients harness data and 

analysis to demonstrate the improved performance and efficiency that comes from investments in digital 

channels. This data can also be used to help create a ‘burning platform’ within the organization that 

crystalizes shifting customer behavior, implications to the health of the business and the current state of

share of its ownership. As with Venture Capital, this option is only available to limited
