Another year, another time for
marketing, business evaluation and
action plans to grow and sustain the
business and for some, a new venture
into business.
North Wales has won various
accolades for tourism and places of
natural beauty, but when it comes to
business, jobs and unemployment, I’m
not sure how good the statistics are on
this subject. However, as I go around
from place to place, I see more and
more businesses popping up here and
there, and on the other hand, I also see
quite a few empty shops where there
were once businesses trading from.
All indications are that there is major
uncertainty within the whole U.K since
the Brexit negotiations and that
uncertainty has spilled out into the
business community at large. Still, the
show must go on, people will continue
to trade, to live, to rise above the
negative and pursue their
ambitions...So I guess the only thing to
do is carry on regardless. After all local
business is the life blood of any
community.
The importance of being involved in Trade publications...
Trade organizations are an
excellent way to form strategic
alliances, a great resource for
new businesses and the best
format for receiving the most
current information in a given
business. It is extremely
important to be involved in
these organizations as a way to
expand your horizons.
Trade publications can be used
as a resource because they are
specifically geared to your
trade, be it marketing,
advertising, construction or
another industry. It is important
to note that companies in the
same industry are not always
your competition; instead you
can create opportunities from
them. One way to do this is to
team up to get contracts with
larger clients that you may not
be able to handle on your own.
Trade publications give you a
chance to connect with your
trade’s community in a
constructive way to grow your
business.
Trade publications are also a
great place to advertise your
business. People who need the
services you supply may
choose to read a publication
about your industry to choose
who to work with. By advertising
there, you are a step ahead. It
is a way to get connected to
people within your industry as
well as those who wish to
contract you.
By reading magazines and
newspapers pertaining to your
business, you are provided with
the most current information
surrounding events and
opportunities that relate to your
business as well. I would
recommend that women
business owners research
different publications in their
trade, and consider them an
important business tool

TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS TO MAXIMIZE EFFICIENCY
(By Alison Doyle c/o thebalance.com)
What are time management skills and why are they
important to employers?
Time management means working efficiently, and employers
in every industry look for staff who
can make optimal use of the time available to them on the job.
time saves the organization money and increases revenue.
Why Employers Want Strong Time Management Skills
Employees who manage their time well are more productive, more efficient, and more likely to
meet deadlines.
They focus on the most important and time sensitive tasks and limit the amount of time wasted on
non-essential duties.
Effective time management requires staff to analyze their workload, assign priorities, and maintain
focus on productive endeavors. Employees who are excellent time managers can eliminate
distractions and enlist support from colleagues to help accomplish their goals.
During a Job Interview
Time management skills, like other soft skills, are in demand. Interviewers will be asking questions
to assess your ability to manage your time, and the time of your team if you’re in a supervisory
role.
Review these time management interview questions prior to your job interviews, so you’re
prepared to respond with specific examples of how you effectively manage your workload.
Also, review these time management skills for ideas of what to share with prospective employers.
Top Time Management Skills
Prioritizing
It is usually impossible to do every single that you need and want to do all at once, but if you
prioritize well, you should be able to complete the most important tasks in an order that makes
sense.
When assigning priority, consider such factors as when each task needs to be done, how long it
might take, how important it might be to others in the organization, what could happen if a task is
not done, and whether any task might be interrupted by the need to wait for someone else.
Scheduling
Scheduling is important, and not only because some tasks have to be done at specific times.
Scheduling affects your day, your week, your month, as well as other people, their projects, and
their short and long term plans for projects and tasks. Most people also have specific times of the
day when they are more and less energetic, and become more productive when they schedule
themselves accordingly. Schedules can be a good way to avoid procrastination, too.
TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS TO MAXIMIZE EFFICIENCY(continued)
Keeping a To-Do List
To-do lists (properly prioritized and integrated with your schedule) are a great way to avoid forgetting
something important. They are also a great way to avoid spending all day thinking about everything you
have to do. Remembering tasks takes energy, and thinking about everything you have to do all week can
be exhausting and overwhelming. Split all the necessary tasks up into a list for each day, and you won’t
have to worry about any of it anymore. Just look at today’s list.
Resting
Resting, even though it may seem contradictory, is an important time-management skill. Although working
long hours or skipping breaks can sometimes improve productivity in the short-term, your exhaustion later
will ensure that your average productivity actually drops. Except for rare emergencies, it is important to
resist the temptation to over-work.
Include necessary breaks, and a sensible quitting time, in your schedule.
Delegation
Depending on what type of work you do, you may be able to delegate some tasks. Knowing what to
delegate and when is a skill. Some people resist delegating, either because they want to maintain control or
because they want to save money by not hiring assistants. Both approaches ultimately hurt productivity and
raise costs.
Remember too, however, that if you practice time management diligently and still can’t get everything done,
you may be trying to do too much. It is better to succeed at a few tasks than to attempt and then fail at
many.
Examples of Time Management Skills in the Workplace
A - E
Adapting plans to changing circumstances
Allocating time for specific tasks
Analyzing processes and selecting the simplest way to accomplish a task
Asking for help when overwhelmed with demands
Assertiveness to say no to inappropriate demands that distract from central duties
Attacking more complex tasks when you have the highest energy and sharpest concentrations
Auditing how time is spent
Avoiding excessive small talk with co-workers
Avoiding procrastination; acting instead of worrying
Breaking broader goals into smaller parts and focusing on one step at a time
Breaking up projects into manageable parts
Creating daily, weekly and monthly “to do” lists
Creating schedules
Delegating more routine tasks to lower level staff
Eating well to maintain energy
Eliminating time wasters
Exercising and participating in other stress reducing activities during leisure time to maximize energy when
at work
F - Z
Facilitating efficient meetings; sticking with time frames for meetings
Grouping similar tasks together to limit transition time
Maintaining an organized work area
Multitasking; shifting smoothly from one task to another
Openness to more efficient ways of doing things
Organizing digital files for easy retrieval
Planning your day the night before or first thing in the morning
Prioritizing requests and demands
Prioritizing a list of projects and focusing on higher value tasks with more immediate deadlines
Punctuality
Putting cell phones aside to eliminate the distraction of personal messages unless required for work
Reviewing performance and eliminating deviations from priorities
Setting daily, weekly and monthly goals
Setting realistic standards for quality and avoiding perfectionism
Setting specific times for responding to email
Taking short breaks to restore energy
Touching each piece of paper or reading each email just once, whenever feasible

Guide to Funding for Small Businesses
www.baywaves.co.uk
Accessing funding remains one of the toughest
challenges for small businesses. You may need funds
to help you to invest in and grow your business, but
these days, finance is becoming more and more
difficult to acquire. This guide outlines some of the
main business funding options for small businesses.
Personal savings & loans from friends and family
If you’re just starting up then personal savings and
informal loans from friends and family remain a
common form of funding. This option perhaps isn’t
suitable if you’ve been trading for a while.
Friends and family may be prepared to help you out with a small informal loan or perhaps
might even invest in your business for a share of its ownership.
Be warned however, that personal relationships can be affected and it might be worth putting
in place a simple loan agreement, so that both parties know where they stand.
Overdrafts
You may be able to negotiate an overdraft with your bank for an agreed maximum amount.
This will allow you to temporarily borrow funds that you do not have in your bank account.
Interest will be charged on these funds, so this option may only be suitable for borrowing small
amounts for short periods of time. Further information on managing your cash flow is available
from BAYWAVES. It is worth noting that an overdraft can be recalled in full at any time by the bank.
Loans
Business loans are available from high street banks and it’s worth comparing loan offers
including those not from your own bank for the best deal. Loan offers will vary dependant on
your own personal and business circumstances and you should seriously consider whether you
will be able to meet any repayments before entering into a loan agreement. Consideration
should be given to the amount that you may need to borrow, what the interest will be, the
repayment period and what you can afford to pay back. It is not unusual for a business loan to
be secured against an asset such as your house. It is important to carefully plan your finances
before considering a business loan. In addition to banks a number of other institutions offer
loans and it is worth considering these alongside the High Street banks.
Enterprise Finance Guarantee
The Enterprise Finance Guarantee is aimed at improving the availability of working capital and
investment funding. If you are a viable business that has been unsure about applying for a loan,
or has had a borrowing request declined due to a lack of security, the Enterprise Finance
Guarantee may be an option for your lender (likely to be a high street bank). Further
information on this scheme can be found at: http://british-business-bank.co.uk/market-failuresand-how-we-address-them/enterprise-finance-guarantee/
Guide to Funding for Small Businesses
www.baywaves.co.uk
Start-Up Loans
The Start-Up Loans initiative is a government funded scheme to provide advice, business loans
and mentoring to start-up businesses. Loans from £1000 to £2500 are available at competitive
rates to individuals who are yet to launch their business or those that have been trading for up
to 12 months.
Credit Cards
A credit card might offer a suitable short-term finance option but they are not suitable for
long-term borrowing. Some cards offer short term, introductory, interest free offers. If you are
certain that the balance can be paid off before the offer runs out then this can be cost
effective. However, interest rates rise sharply, above those of overdrafts and loans if you cannot
settle the balance.
While many credit card providers discourage the use of personal credit cards for business
purposes, there are now a number of credit card offers specifically targeted at new business
owners.
Local Authorities
Your local Economic Development Department may offer financial support to businesses
including grants and loans. It’s worth checking out the business pages on your Local Authority’s
website to see if there are any current schemes running.
Grant Funding
Government grant schemes are not as abundant as they once were but a number of grant
and loan schemes remain available. You’ll find that schemes of this nature all have their own
specific application criteria i.e. post code, industry sector and whether you operate business
to business (B2B) or business to consumer (B2C). Most grants will require match funding and so
will only make a contribution to your investment. If you have plans to grow and are wishing to
make an investment into your business, then looking for business grants is an ideal place to start.
Grant scheme availability remains fluid and so it’s worth checking out what may be available
on a regular basis.
Crowdfunding
Crowdfunding is fast becoming a very popular alternative method of raising finance for
start-ups and community projects, whilst developments around crowd based loans and equity
funding mean that opportunities for growth businesses are also increasing.
The basic concept is that the business receives small amounts of funding from a large amount
of people via one of a number of platforms. The money pledged may be a donation, or in
return for a reward linked to the business or project. In other cases investors will be looking for a
return in the form of shares or interest.
10 WAYS TO MARKET YOUR BUSINESS www.baywaves.co.uk
10 Ways to Market Your Small Business on a Shoestring Budget
When budgets are tight, marketing might be the first expense you look to cut.
Let me stop you right there.
While traditional advertising methods are costly and hard to measure, small businesses have never
had greater access to cost-effective, trackable marketing tools.
But with so many digital tools available, how do you know where to start?
Email and social media marketing are just the start. Here are ten marketing strategies that can help
you market your small business on a shoestring budget.
1. Craft an elevator pitch
You should be marketing all the time — wherever you are. Therefore, you need a compelling elevator
pitch.
Research shows the average attention span of an adult is about six to eight seconds. That’s all the
time you have to grab someone’s attention.
If you successfully engage them, then you only have a little over a minute to really sell them on your
product or service. Invest the time to craft a killer elevator pitch. The return on your investment will pay
huge dividends in terms of creating business opportunities.
2. Leverage your community
You don’t have to think big when it comes to your marketing efforts. Think locally. What’s going on in
your community?
Sponsor a Little League team or a 5k charity walk/run. Print bookmarks and leave them at the local
library. Get to know your ideal customer and think about how and where they spend their time.
Then search for opportunities to get in front of your customer with your marketing message.
3. Collaborate
Put together a group of synergistic, non-competitive businesses in your area and agree to crosspromote.
You can use coupons, fliers, reciprocal website links, bundled promotions or social media platforms.
By collaborating with each other, you can expand your customer base because you’ll be reaching new
people.
4. Network
I’m a huge fan of networking. I don’t think there is any better way to build a business than to get out
there, shake some hands, and get to know people.
Networking requires a time commitment and it doesn’t provide instant gratification, but a strong
network is one of the greatest assets any business person can have.
10 WAYS TO MARKET YOUR BUSINESS www.baywaves.co.uk
5. Give a speech
A lot of people hate public speaking. However, there are many organizations looking for qualified,
subject-matter experts who can present to their groups.
Take a deep breath and volunteer. You don’t have to be a pro as long as the information you share is
helpful to the audience. And the upside — the more you do it the easier it gets. Plus, it positions you
as a credible authority in your field.
6. Create buzz
I started my corporate career in the field of public relations and the business has changed significantly
because of technology.
Today, a small business owner can accomplish a lot without hiring a professional firm. Subscribe to
Help a Reporter Out. You can respond to reporters’ queries that are looking for story ideas and
resources. Some are small media opportunities, but others are major media outlets that use this
service too.
7. Ask for referrals
Don’t be shy about asking for customer referrals. The majority of people say they are willing to provide
a referral if asked, but very few take the initiative to do it on their own.
Referrals make it easier to get in the door with new customers. If you aren’t asking for them, you are
missing opportunities.
8. Build relationships
It is a lot less expensive to keep a customer than it is to get a new one. That’s why establishing strong
relationships with your customer base is crucial. One of the ways you can do that is by keeping in
touch with people through email marketing.
Ask customers for their email address when they visit your store or website. Then, make your
communications informative, helpful and professional — something your customers will look forward
to receiving.
9. Offer coupons
Coupons are a good way for many businesses to attract new customers. Research shows that people
will go out of their way to use a coupon, proving that this method is successful in expanding your
customer base.
Coupons can also generate return visits. For example, if you give a customer a coupon for a discount
to use on future business, there’s a high probability they’ll be back.
10. Give it away
If someone has the opportunity to experience your product or service, chances are they will want to
purchase more.
Don’t be afraid to give someone a free trial or a sample. In today’s economy, people are more
comfortable purchasing something they have been able to experience first.
These ten, inexpensive marketing strategies will help you engage customers, build relationships, and
ultimately keep your brand top-of-mind. It’s not always about the money you have to spend on
marketing, it’s about the time and effort you put into it and above all, the relevance it has for your
customers.

CAPTAIN
YOUR BRAND
Digital transformation is not a new concept. But with the intense pace of change ignited by technology and
shifting consumer behavior over the past 15 years, the demand on businesses to transform and adapt to
new realities has never been greater.
Perhaps that is because digital transformation is not a destination; it’s a journey. There is no finish line as
consumers continue to embrace new methods of connecting, discovering and shopping – with seemingly
faster adoption cycles every time.
So what are marketers to do? How can the CMO and her organization not only evolve to keep up with
changing times, but how can Marketing play a leading example for holistic organizational change? These
challenges are an ongoing focus at iCrossing and a subject of many recent discussions with clients. Here
is some perspective:
Embrace the journey: This is an incredibly exciting time to be a marketer. The pace of change presents
equal parts challenge and opportunity. Success on this journey requires an innate curiosity and an
approach of continuous learning. Leading brands are creating activities and functions built into their teams
and process that drive discovery, innovation and experimentation.
Every brand’s evolution is different: Every company is unique and so is its path along this road. Industries
with more direct customer relationships and direct-to-customer sales (automotive, financial services) were
disrupted earlier. Others, like CPG and health care, did not face such upheaval as quickly but are now
gaining momentum. We have found it valuable to look to other industries and markets for lessons that can
be applied to help our clients.
It’s bigger than just marketing transformation: “Digital transformation” is really business transformation.
Marketers need to consider the changes in our discipline within the context of overall changes in their
business. Being on the front line with customers gives Marketing an immense opportunity to pave the way
for their brand to embrace being more tech-savvy, data-smart and accountable to the bottom line.
Changing culture vs. capabilities: Many clients have recognized that the pace of disruption has increased
the importance of change management. Transformation needs to be managed both up and down the
organization. To generate buy-in and funding from leadership, many of our clients harness data and
analysis to demonstrate the improved performance and efficiency that comes from investments in digital
channels. This data can also be used to help create a ‘burning platform’ within the organization that
crystalizes shifting customer behavior, implications to the health of the business and the current state of
preparedness of the organization to respond.
Collaboration with IT: To be successful in this new environment, marketing and technology leadership,
along with their supporting organizations, need to come together in unprecedented ways. These teams
need to jointly understand business and marketing objectives and then collaborate on how to build the
right stack of technologies and partnerships to effectively deliver against those objectives. Marketers need
to develop a better understanding of the technologies, and IT teams need to take time to understand
customers’ behaviors and how marketing drives business.
Eliminate the silos: Today most marketing organizations have an analytics team, a social media team, a
content team, a website team and so on. Moving forward, companies are beginning to use data to create
a much more holistic customer view and to think more broadly about customer experience management.
But to pay this off, marketing leaders will need to break down these inter-team silos and create a holistic,
customer-centric org structure.
The idea of digital transformation is as daunting as it is imperative. Looking forward, change will continue
to be our only constant, so it is critical that marketing leaders take the time to think about their org design,
talent and culture to ensure they are set up to be successful in this reality.
Guide to Funding for Small Businesses
www.baywaves.co.uk
Although crowd funding may not be right for every business since the beginning of 2014 £1,700
every hour has been raised through this method, so it should not be ignored! Further information
can be found on the UK Crowdfunding Associations website: http://www.ukcfa.org.uk/
Venture Capital
A third party commercial organisation such as a venture capital firm may invest in your
business for a share of its ownership. This means that some control of ownership is given to the
new shareholder. This type of finance is only open to limited companies and investors often look
to make large investments of over £1 million. More information can be obtained from www.
bvca.co.uk.
Business Angels
Think Dragons Den! Private investors may invest funds into a growing enterprise in return for a
share of its ownership. As with Venture Capital, this option is only available to limited
companies and investments are typically between £10,000 and £100,000. More information
can be obtained from www.ukbusinessangelsassociation.org.uk.
