Scenes from
the season
Polo
Just before the new year,
there’s a quiet buzz that
starts to vibrate throughout
the community. Wellington’s
back roads that have
remained relatively dormant
since last spring
start to come alive with
the sights and sounds of
the approaching polo/
equestrian season.
A quick tour of the
area looks something
like this:
– A teenage girl takes
a break from jumping practice with
her horse. She stands on the property’s
lush, green lawn with her Cavalier
King Charles spaniel at her feet and
phone in hand, texting away.
– Out-of–state license plates dot
every other car, truck and SUV in
the parking lot at the Palm Beach
International Equestrian Center. One
vehicle has a bumper sticker that proclaims:
“I’d rather be with my horse.”
– Trucks and trailers kick up dust
on side streets as they transport
horses.
– Golf carts zip around with
workers putting finishing touches on
facilities’ buildings, landscaping and
grounds.
And just like that, even before the
ball drops on New Year’s Eve, the
season has begun.
The quiet buzz turns into a roar
as polo ponies and players thunder
down the field at the International
Polo Club Palm Beach, racing toward
the Herbie Pennell Cup and Joe Barry
Cup trophies in the first few weeks of
competition.
Days later, the dancing horses of
dressage and their elegantly-attired
riders (some of them Olympians) converge
at The Stadium where the goal
is to qualify for the World Equestrian
Games coming to North Carolina in
September.
Saturday nights are all right for
show jumpers as the Winter Equestrian
Festival is the last event to start
the season. Overcoming obstacles,
literally, is what these
premier athletes train for
all year long.
Juan Matute Jr.
Dressage champion
BY JENNIFER SHAPIRO-SACKS
From his earliest memories as a 6-year-old riding ponies, Juan Matute
Jr.’s life has always involved horses. The 20-year-old native Spaniard and
dressage champion is gearing up to compete again in the Adequan Global
Dressage Festival this season in Wellington.
“Ever since, I’ve been growing in the sport and loving every second. I’m loving the
adventure,” he said.
Practicing six days a week for up to eight hours a day, Matute Jr. starts riding
from 8 a.m. into the afternoon and then focuses on his studies with a tutor. He’s
getting ready to take online classes in a few weeks at Penn State where he wants to
major in business, he said.
“My dream, my goal, is to continue pursuing my goals as an athlete, as a dressage
rider, or create a business and be an entrepreneur. I have an ambitious mindset,” he
said. “I want to do a bit of both without losing focus on either one. I like the challenge
and have my mind set very clear and know what direction I want to take.”
Matute Jr. began competing in dressage at 14 and at the Concours Dressage
International (CDI) level against adults when he was 15 to 16, moving up the ranks.
He’s had a variety of achievements since he’s been in the global circuit since
about 2104, with some of the most recent ones including: a silver medal for individual
in the FEI Nations Cup in 2014 for small tour, which was the first time he won
a medal; a bronze medal in the team competition for the Nations Cup; and a gold
medal in individual and a bronze for the team in the Nations Cup in 2016.
Last year, he won a bronze for the team in the Nations Cup and also won his first
Grand Prix 4-star victory. He’s also won multiple World Cups and has placed in the
top 3 to 5 in the season, he said.
“The most remarkable fact in Juan’s career so far is that he has been able to
achieve three individual [Federation Equestre Internationale] medals at the European
championships with three different horses and in three consecutive years,” said
his father, Juan Matute Sr., who competed in three Olympics for Spain and trains
horses up to the Grand Prix level in dressage. “These horses have all been produced
by Juan at home, from the junior classes to the Grand Prix level. Successes at Aachen,
Rotterdam and Gothenburg, and in between being one of the best riders of the
world at his age, makes me feel very proud.
“I feel very proud that both my daughter, Paula and Juan, follow my footsteps.
Each one with his or her own style, but with the same foundation and love for the
sport, and, most importantly, for the horses,” he said.
Matute Jr. primarily got into dressage because of his father’s career, and enjoys
the pursuit of perfection and the challenge associated with the sport, he said.
“I’m looking forward to continue gaining experience and having my horses gaining
experience. I’m having some young horses move up the level so it will be a year
of transition,” he said. “I’m not necessarily looking for high scores. I want to show
consistency and have a good experience for them.”
When it comes to advice he’d give other young people trying to get into dressage,
he recommends being “patient, determined and believing in your horse.”
“It’s a very long journey and you shouldn’t try to rush things. Practice, practice,
practice. Keep your hopes up and dream big,” he said.
When he’s not practicing dressage and with his horses, he also enjoys working
out at the gym, running, swimming, biking, soccer, tennis and spending time with
friends.
Matute Jr., who spends half his time in Wellington and the other half traveling
around Europe, will compete in a variety of categories during the Global Dressage
Festival, including Grand Prix, small tour, young riders and young horses at the
CDI level.
Brunch with panache
BY NATALYA JONES
Grab your big hats and pearls; it’s time to start horsing
around. International Polo Club Palm Beach is back
with brunch, and it’s anything but your average breakfast-lunch
combo.
For one, there is the food. The spread not only has a variety of
delicacies, but also changes weekly. French toast, omelets, muffins,
croissants and other breakfast items are offered along with
fruit-and-cheese trays, and a variety of salads. For those looking for
a little more substance, lunch options include fresh seafood, mixed
vegetables, a meat-carving station, Panini sandwiches, potatoes,
soups and small tapas, among other items.
Let’s not forget the dessert. The sweeter side of things showcases
a multitude of cookies, cupcakes, brownies, pies, dipped fruit, candy
and chocolates.
There is also a full cash bar available throughout the afternoon.
Why is the brunch is so extraordinary? “The IPC Sunday Brunch
stands out above the rest because it offers multiple experiences for
one ticket price such as the lavish brunch spread, field-side table
seating, access to meet-and-greets and shopping, valet parking, and
a fun, exciting environment to watch polo each week," said Caroline
Roche, who handles marketing and social media for the club’s owner
Equestrian Sport Productions.
In addition to the game viewing, brunch guests also will be
granted exclusive access to polo player meet-and-greets each Sunday.
As if that wasn’t enough, they will also be able to attend various
high-end trunk shows.
“There will be themes throughout the season in The Pavilion
that encourage guests to wear certain outfits,” Roche said. “Examples
include the New Year’s Eve black-and-gold theme, Derby Days
[big hats and prints] theme, Rose days [wear pink] and a White Out
party.” Dressing up is a good incentive because during every themed
weekend, a “best dressed” guest will be chosen and will receive a
bottle of Veuve Clicquot Champagne.
Be sure to tell all your friends: The Pavilion can host more than
700 guests each Sunday. Another option is the Coco Polo Lounge
with an exclusive VIP experience.
Regular season brunch starts at 2 p.m each Sunday and runs
through April 1. Pricing starts at $125 for veranda seating per
person and can cost up to $750 for a table for six and a free bottle
of Veuve Clicquot. The Coco Polo Lounge costs $200 per person
and includes brunch spread, celebrity guest appearances, gift item,
private lounge seating, select shopping vendors, valet parking and
one free specialty drink served. Each brunch ticket includes all-youcan-
eat brunch as well as non-alcoholic beverages.
There are also beverage package add-ons. Beverage Package 1
for $90 allows guests to reserve a bottle of Veuve Clicquot while
8 | JANUARY 2018

Gastronomy
Beverage Package 2 at $90 will provide a bottle of Ketel One with
mixers. The last package, Beverage Package 3, costs $150 for one
bottle of Veuve Clicquot and one bottle of Ketel One; mixers are
also provided.
There is also brunch available at the U.S. Open Polo Championship,
which runs from April 8 to 22. This starts at $175 for veranda
seating per person; a veranda table for six, with two free bottles of
Veuve Clicquot, costs $1,050. It is $250 admission for the Coco Polo
Lounge per person and includes a gift item, specialty food display,
table and lounge seating, and one free specialty drink served.
Paige, randomly draw the first round of nonprofits that will participate in the event.
Great Charity Challenge
BY MARY RAIMAN
Mark your calendars for one of the biggest events in
Wellington: The ninth annual Great Charity Challenge
is coming to the Palm Beach International
Equestrian Center Feb. 3. The annual philanthropic
event, presented by Fidelity Investments and produced and hosted
by Equestrian Sport Productions, is a relay-style jumping competition
that draws big money for local charities.
Sponsors are paired with teams that consist of three riders -many
of Olympic caliber - and then assigned a charity. Everyone wins at
this event; the first-place team gets $150,000 for its nonprofit, while
the last-place team secures a guaranteed $15,000 for its charity.
Equestrian Sport Productions CEO Mark Bellissimo and his
daughter Paige took the idea of helping nonprofit organizations in
Palm Beach County and turned it into a successful reality.
“On Christmas, 2009, I saw a media report about local charities
having to close their doors due to decreased funding because of the
country’s financial crisis,” Paige Bellissimo said.
She wanted to help, went to her father and they formulated the
plan for the Great Charity Challenge.
“The first event was done three weeks later,” she said. “We want
to support and empower smaller local charities which have unique
approaches to solving problems in our community.
“By bringing them into the Great Charity Challenge, these smaller
nonprofits benefit from resources that they may not have access to
on their own. With the GCC’s marketing power and resulting publicity,
lesser-known charities become instantly recognizable to local
businesses and the general public. This generates more funding
opportunities and helps them recruit more volunteers.”
During its first year, the event raised $580,000. As of 2017, $10.8
million in donations have been collected and distributed to 220 Palm
Beach County charities. Equestrian Sport Productions covers all
overhead and hosting costs to ensure charities receive 100 percent of
the contributions.
Yet, organizers thought the event was lacking something.
“We just felt there was a missing component to tie it in to the
community for the people that came, so we introduced a theme in
2016,” said Anne Caroline Valtin, the event’s executive director.
This year’s theme is “A Night When Everyone’s A Star.” Sponsors
and their teams will pick different classical and popular feature
films to represent and attendees are encouraged to come dressed as
Champions for a cure
BY JENNIFER SHAPIRO-SACKS
As a child, professional polo player Brandon Phillips had
lymphoma and although he never wanted to talk about
it, he later realized he wanted to start doing something
to give back by using his polo background. That’s how
Polo for a Purpose started.
The event, which will take place Jan. 15 at the International Polo
Club Palm Beach, raises money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma
Society Palm Beach Area Chapter.
“I got to a certain age and wanted to give back and help people
in the same situation I was in and start to use my job, and a lot of
kids like coming to polo and like the horses,” he said. “I wanted to
make an event that is fun. The main goals are to give back and raise
money for cancer research and help the families in the Palm Beach
area.”
Proceeds from Polo for a Purpose presents Le Cirque Rouge will
be used toward helping families with medical co-pays and travel
assistance as well as research to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s
disease and myeloma, said Pam Payne, the chapter’s executive
director.
Last year, the chapter gave out $1.5 million to 351 people in eight
counties, she said.
The organization’s mission is to find a cure and improve the quality
of life of patients and their families.
Polo for a Purpose, in its fifth year, will feature a cocktail reception
followed by a luncheon, silent and live auction, polo match and
after party with performers and a DJ. There will also be a children’s
area with a fun house and face painting as well as food trucks, Phillips
said.
This year’s chairwomen are PJ Rizvi, Visse Wedell and Penny
Bradley, with Phillips serving as honorary chairman.
“The main goal is not just to make it a typical charity event and
you’re bored and donate money and go home,” he said. “It’s really a
fun day for as many people as possible. We’re trying to make it a real
fun party to enjoy. Something different than a typical charity event.”
Last year, the event raised over $500,000 and this year Phillips’
goal is to raise at least $600,000, but he ultimately hopes to raise
$1 million from the event, he said. In total, Polo for a Purpose has
raised $1.1 million since it began in 2013.
Aside from raising money, another goal of the event is to raise
awareness, Payne said.
“The more people we can educate and put in the back of their
minds, ‘I know where you can get some help.’ Raising money for
research is huge, raising awareness is huge and raising the money to
give to our patients is huge,” she said.
Sunny Hale
Late pioneer enters Hall of Fame
BY Y.A. TEITELBAUM
Sunny Hale, a pioneer who was the first woman to win the prestigious U.S.
Open, headlines the Polo Hall of Fame Class of 2018.
Hale died Feb. 26, 2017 due to complications from cancer, cutting short
her illustrious career.
Joining Hale will be four-time U.S. Open champion Ruben Gracida, as well as
renowned polo manager Jimmy Newman and Roy L. Barry, who each will receive the
Iglehart Award for lifetime contributions to the sport at the annual gala on Feb. 16
at the Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame, west of Lake Worth.
Hale won the 2000 U.S. Open with Outback, playing alongside Adolfo Cambiaso,
Lolo Castagnola and Phil Heatley at Palm Beach Polo in Wellington.
In addition to her remarkable playing career,
which spanned more than 20 years,
she was equally as impressive off the field.
Hale, who reached a 5-goal handicap (out
of a maximum of 10), created the American
Polo Horse Association to establish polo ponies as
a breed and preserve their information for posterity and started the Women’s
Championship Tournament to give greater opportunities
to women.
Hale has a room dedicated to her amazing success
in the male-dominated sport, including numerous
heartfelt notes on blue Post-it notes. Blue was
her favorite color and it dominates the room,
along with framed photos, polo trophies and
some of Hale’s polo equipment.
Not content to rest on her laurels, she strove
to promote the sport, horses and horsemanship
as an avid mentor and inspiration to aspiring
polo players male and female, young and old. She
wrote a series of polo “help” books, created an
online clinic and traveled the world lecturing and
giving polo clinics and seminars.
Gracida, who is based in Wellington, won his
four U.S. Open titles in 1980, 1982, 1983 and 1993.
He also won the 1981 and 1988 Camacho Cup, a major
international match between the U.S. and Mexico. Gracida
is a cousin to Hall of Famers Memo Gracida and the late
Carlos Gracida.
Newman, a part-time Wellington resident, has played and/
or worked in polo for more than 50 years, managing 27 U.S.
Open tournaments, more than anyone in the history of the sport.
In addition to being the manager at International Polo Club since
its inception, he has also run some of the most prominent polo
clubs in the U.S., including Palm Beach Polo, Retama (outside San
Antonio) and Santa Barbara Polo.
The Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame is located at 9011 Lake
Worth Road. Accompanying exhibits include documents, works of
art, historic trophies, artifacts, books, films and other memorabilia.
It is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays; during season, January through
April, it is also open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Admission
is free.
Jump in to the festival
BY AUSTEN ERBLAT
Equestrian
The Winter Equestrian Festival returns to the Palm Beach
International Equestrian Center through April 1 with
the largest purse of its 38-year run.
"The WEF circuit will distribute more than $9 million
in prize money throughout the duration of the competition," said
Carly Weilminster, spokeswoman for Equestrian Sport Productions,
which oversees the festival and the equestrian center.
Last year’s prize was $8 million.
Riders from around the world will compete for titles in front of
thousands of audience members. Some events draw over 10,000 people.
There will be over 5,000 horses on the grounds over the course
of the festival.
Highlights of the Winter Equestrian Festival include Concours de
Saut International 5* competitions, which are rated using a starring
system, in which more competitive events with more prize money
have more stars.
The fourth and 11th week of the competition will take place on
the historic Derby Field located at Equestrian Village and there will
be classes offered for those who sign up.
“These classes are entertaining and fun,” Weilminster said. “Spectators
and fans can sit close to the action and enjoy the great South
Florida weather while watching top riders compete.”
The Federation Equestre Internationale Nations Cup takes place
March 3, offering even more prize money this year with a boost up
to $150,000. The team competition brings horses and riders from
around the globe.
The equestrian center is host to shopping, eateries and family
activities. Over 100 retail outlets will be present through the festival.
“Many of the vendor shops are open for browsing and there are
several food and beverage locations on site, including pizza, popcorn,
ice cream and more,” Weilminster said.
Saturday Night Lights features the highest level of competitive
show jumping alongside food, live music and other activities.
“These competitions are hosted under the lights in our main
International Ring and feature the largest and most competitive class
of the week,” she said. “Riders must qualify for the class and then
compete for the week's top purse.”
On a quest to qualify
BY JENNIFER SHAPIRO-SACKS
Dressage
The Adequan Global Dressage Festival (GDF), the world’s
largest international and national dressage circuit, offers
spectators a chance to see athletes who competed in the
2016 Olympics in Rio, competitors under 25 years old as
well as amateur riders.
Carly Weilminster, spokeswoman for Equestrian Sport Productions,
which runs the festival, recently talked about this season.
How will this year be different?
This year is a special year for a lot of the riders because later in
September 2018, our sister venue in North Carolina is hosting the
World Equestrian Games, which is kind of the pinnacle of equestrian
sports.
This season, at GDF, is a qualifying period for that competition,
so a lot of riders will be seeking their qualifications to meet the standards
needed to be selected for that event. It’ll be a really interesting
few weeks of competition, especially for the American competitors
because their performance at GDF will, in turn, kind of provide a
platform for them to be selected for a European tour, which then will
ultimately decide who competes at the World Equestrian Games in
September.
How many competitions are there?
Within each week of Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI)
competition, there are numerous classes, upward of 20 to 25 classes,
within each Concours Dressage International (CDI) depending on
the tour. Large tour is grand prix, which is the highest designation of
dressage. Within the large tour competitions, there are three classes:
grand prix, grand prix freestyle and grand prix special. Then the
small tour, which also has three to four classes. Then there are also a
lot of amateur classes, young horse classes and under-25 classes that
all compose that FEI week.
How much prize money is awarded?
Within recent years, dressage has definitely become more popular
in the U.S., but in most other areas it may not be the most
well-funded equestrian discipline from a sponsorship perspective. In
Florida, we have a great group of dedicated and loyal sponsors who
help make the season super special for the riders because they have
the opportunity to earn more prize money than they would probably
anywhere else in the world. Typically, on average, there is $700,000
to $800,000 in prize money throughout the circuit.
Why should people attend?
It’s such a wide range of riders, so you can come at any point and
see amateur riders or under-25 riders or some of the best riders in the
world competing in Wellington. Most of the team from the U.S. Rio
team will be competing. It’s a great way to watch Olympic-level athletes
competing in South Florida’s backyard. Dressage is an expanding
sport in the U.S. Show jumping is the most familiar, but dressage
is a great sport for amateurs, and that is exploding. There’s no age
limit and men and women compete equally. They’re scored and judged
the same way. We’ll have a lot of international riders from Europe and
South America trying to qualify for it.
What are some of the highlights?
Definitely the Friday nights and week 5, which is Feb. 7 to 12, is a
CDI 5 star, which is the only CDI 5 star. That’s the highest international
rank for a dressage show. It’s the only CDI 5 star in North
America. That will bring out a lot of the top riders who are based in
Wellington for the winter season. Another fun week is the Nations
Cup, which is the only non-championship for dressage hosted in our
hemisphere on week 12, which is the final week of competition on
March 25. The Nations Cup format is teams of three or four who
compete for their representative country. People get really into it with
flags. It’s a great way to end the season.
Ten-goalers Facundo Pieres, Sapo Caset and Hilario Ulloa
highlight the top players that will be featured in the 20-
goal series during the first half of the 15th season of high-goal
polo at International
Polo Club Palm Beach
in Wellington.
Pieres, who reached
the sport’s maximum
10-goal handicap in
2007 as a 21-yearold
and is one of the
most prolific scorers
of his generation, is
the anchor for patron
Curtis Pilot's new team.
He will be joined by his
older brother, Gonzalito
Pieres, a 9-goaler, along
with Pilot, who is based
in Point Clear, Ala.
The 32-year-old Caset
and 8-goaler Julian
de Lusarreta form a formidable
duo for Tonkawa,
which reached the final of 2017 Ylvisaker Cup for patron Jeff
Hildebrand.
Julio Arellano
Ulloa, 32, leads Jim Zenni’s Villa del Lago Modere, along with
5-goalers Jared Zenni and Agustin Obregon.
At least nine teams are expected to compete during the 20-
goal season at the club.
Perennial contender Coca-Cola, with crowd favorites Julio
Arellano and Sugar Erskine, returns as defending Ylvisaker Cup
champion. Arellano grew up in Wellington and the 8-goaler is
the top-rated U.S. player. Erskine’s aggressive, all-out style creates
highlights every game for patron Gillian Johnston’s team.
Michael Bickford’s La Indiana features a balanced lineup
with 7-goaler Jeff Hall, 6-goaler Facundo Obregon and 5-goaler
Toro Ruiz.
Postage Stamp Farm continues to build its organization and
features 9-goaler Mariano Aguerre, who has been playing in
Wellington for more than 20 years. Patron Annabelle Gundlach’s
squad has a Wellington flavor, with locals 6-goaler Kris
Kampsen and 5-goaler Brandon Phillips.
Patron Teo Calle and 3-goaler Tony Calle are joined by
steady 9-goaler Sebastian Merlos as Travieso hopes to make an
impact this season.
Bob Jornayvaz’s Valiente, considered the top organization in
polo, is also expected to play.
Sayyu Dantata’s SD Farms will be playing high-goal at the
club for the first time, featuring former 10-goaler Adam Snow,
now rated at 5 goals. They will be joined by 7-goaler Inaki
Laprida and 6-goaler Peco Polledo. Dantata, who is from Nigeria,
has played medium goal at Grand Champions Polo Club in
Wellington and in Aiken over the past few seasons.
Among the missing teams this season is Orchard Hill as patron
Steve van Andel retired from high-goal polo.
