Great Charity Challenge BY MARY RAIMAN Mark your calendars for one of the biggest events in Wellington: The ninth annual Great Charity Challenge is coming to the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center Feb. 3. The annual philanthropic event, presented by Fidelity Investments and produced and hosted by Equestrian Sport Productions, is a relay-style jumping competition that draws big money for local charities. Sponsors are paired with teams that consist of three riders -many of Olympic caliber - and then assigned a charity. Everyone wins at this event; the first-place team gets $150,000 for its nonprofit, while the last-place team secures a guaranteed $15,000 for its charity. Equestrian Sport Productions CEO Mark Bellissimo and his daughter Paige took the idea of helping nonprofit organizations in Palm Beach County and turned it into a successful reality. “On Christmas, 2009, I saw a media report about local charities having to close their doors due to decreased funding because of the country’s financial crisis,” Paige Bellissimo said. She wanted to help, went to her father and they formulated the plan for the Great Charity Challenge. “The first event was done three weeks later,” she said. “We want to support and empower smaller local charities which have unique approaches to solving problems in our community. “By bringing them into the Great Charity Challenge, these smaller nonprofits benefit from resources that they may not have access to on their own. With the GCC’s marketing power and resulting publicity, lesser-known charities become instantly recognizable to local businesses and the general public. This generates more funding opportunities and helps them recruit more volunteers.” During its first year, the event raised $580,000. As of 2017, $10.8 million in donations have been collected and distributed to 220 Palm Beach County charities. Equestrian Sport Productions covers all overhead and hosting costs to ensure charities receive 100 percent of the contributions. Yet, organizers thought the event was lacking something. “We just felt there was a missing component to tie it in to the community for the people that came, so we introduced a theme in 2016,” said Anne Caroline Valtin, the event’s executive director. This year’s theme is “A Night When Everyone’s A Star.” Sponsors and their teams will pick different classical and popular feature films to represent and attendees are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite characters. At the recent $216,000 Palm Beach County Sports Commission Grand Prix CSI 4*, 24 charities were randomly drawn throughout the evening's festivities, in addition to the Wellington Public Schools PTA/PTO/PTSA (the only automatic entries included every year). Future charity drawings will take place randomly during the first weeks of the Winter Equestrian Festival and the final two wild card teams will be drawn the night of the Great Charity Challenge.
