COURSE DESCRIPTION
The topics included in this course are linear equations and their graphs; inequalities and number line
graphs; rational expressions; factoring; laws of exponents; radicals; and polynomials.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Solve linear equation
2. Graph linear equation
3. Simplify exponential expressions
4. Factor polynomials
5. Simplify rational expressions
6. Simplify radical expressions
COURSE GOALS
The student will develop proficiency with solving linear equations, solving linear inequalities, factoring
polynomials, and simplifying rational expressions. The course should prepare students for future study
in college algebra.
COURSE MATERIALS
For this online class, students will use an eBook and an online component called MyMathLab. This does
not need to be purchased from the bookstore. An eBook fee will be added to your PRCC student
account.
Scientific (NOT GRAPHING) calculators are allowed on all tests.
INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES
Instructional Videos are posted in MyMathLab. Students should print the Video notes for each section.
Then, view the instructional videos for each section. After viewing the video for a particular section,
then you should complete the homework assignment for that section (posted under Homework tab in
MyMathLab). These homework assignments will count as a grade. Then, repeat this process for each
section within the Module. When you have finished the homework in Module 1, then you should take
the test for Module 1. Before taking the test, please work the review for the test. You will have two
attempts on each Module test.

*Please note that tests cannot be made up. Tests must be taken at the designated time. Once you log
into a test, you must complete it. If you attempt to open another page during a test –homework, notes,
another web site – the test will shut itself down. This is a built in procedure from MyMathLab to prevent
cheating. If this happens to you, it will count as one attempt at taking the test.
Print out and refer to “Deadlines for Homework & Tests” that is found under Course Information. Dates
and deadlines for test are firm. You should print these dates out and post them in your notebook or
beside your computer, so that you cannot possibly forget them. You may work ahead, but you will be
marked absent if you fall behind in the schedule. Additional resources, such as power points,
animations, and MML videos, are available through MyMathLab. These are posted under the
Multimedia Library.
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Assessment for the course will include homework exercises from My Math Lab, chapter tests, and a
proctored, comprehensive final exam.
ATTENDANCE
Attendance in this course is mandatory. MyMathLab Homework assignment will be due weekly.
Attendance will be taken once per week and will be determined based on the student's submission of
MML homework. Failure to submit the assignments by the due date will result in an absence. Students
in online courses area allowed two absences. If you exceed two absences, you can be cut form the class,
which results in a W for the course. There are usually 2 or 3 homework assignments due each Monday.
You will be marked absent if you have not attempted all of the assignment each week. If you work 1 out
of 2, you will be considered absent. A student may be dropped for excessive absences upon accrual of
two absences if the absences are not justified.
PRCC has an online attendance program called GradesFirst. Each time you are marked absent in a
course, you should receive an email from GradesFirst indicating the number of absences you have.
These emails will serve as your warning notice. Please read and follow the instructions given on your
GradesFirst emails. More information about GradesFirst is posted under Course Information in
Blackboard.
Extenuating circumstances do occur. It is the student's responsibility to provide appropriate
documentation to substantiate such circumstances, at which time the instructor will determine if an
extension is warranted.
Circumstances NOT considered extenuating:
-failure to read the syllabus
-registering late for class
-failure to plan appropriately
-not having the appropriate software
-technical problems
Homework will be due every week. You may work ahead, but you will be counted absent if you have not
completed the homework by the due date. You can also improve your homework score after the

deadline; however a 30% penalty will automatically be applied to any homework not attempted by the
due date.

You may rework the homework problems as many times as you like until the due date.
You must submit work every week to be counted present for that week!!!
Your attendance will be taken by your submission of weekly homework assignments.
Students are allowed 2 absences in an online course. Upon accumulation of the 3 rd absence, you
may be administratively withdrawn from the course. You will be notified via email or through
PRCC’s GradesFirst system when you have been marked absent.
All Tests will be posted in MyMathLab. The instructor will be available to assist by phone, email and/or
through the discussion board.
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Assessment for the course will include homework exercises from My Math Lab, module tests, and a
proctored, comprehensive final exam.
appropriate penalty in accordance with the instructor's institutional policy. This may include failure of
the assignment, failure of the course, or dismissal from the institution.
home. Because the tests will be open for a certain number of days (as indicated on the course calendar),
NO makeup tests will be administered. A zero will be given for any test not taken.
These chapter tests are timed and may be taken twice. If computer issues arise during a test, you may
be required to take that test in the MATH LAB on campus. Also, if a test has to be reset due to computer
issues, this will count as one attempt.
Module 3 Test must be proctored at an approved testing site. For PRCC students, you must test in the
Mathematics Power Lab at either the Poplarville campus or the Forrest County Center. Test 3 may be
taken only once.
The final exam must be taken in the Math Power Lab at either the Poplarville campus or the Forrest
County Center .You must bring your student ID with you to take your exam. In Poplarville, the Math Lab
is located in the Science Building, Downstairs in Room G14. In Hattiesburg, the Math Lab is located in
Building 1, Room 112.More information regarding the Math Power Labs will be provided in MyMathLab.
The final exam may be taken only once.
