CINDI Programme activities in the Republic
of Moldova during 2002 included public
information about noncommunicable
diseases and hypertension management in
the CINDI demonstration area.
Nutrition
A key aim was to inform the public about the role
of unhealthy food in the development of
noncommunicable diseases. The research
undertaken in the CINDI demonstration area
provided information about high levels of unhealthy food consumption. The
public was informed about the necessity of decreasing fat intake and
increasing intake of fresh fruit and vegetables. Special educational
recommendations, booklets and medical bulletins were produced and
distributed.
Smoking
Highlights included activities at an individual and community level on tobacco
as a major risk factor. The government of Moldova decided to prohibit smoking
in public places.
Hypertension management
The incidence of hypertension and the level of related premature mortality was
high in the demonstration area. The prevalence of this risk factor was 30% in
the population aged 25 to 64. Two national conferences on hypertension
prevention and control, with the participation of health professionals and
pharmacists, were organised. Patients with hypertension in the demonstration
area were examined, establishing individual risk level, and treatment was
prescribed.
