New Year – new Vicarage.
The new Vicarage in Hendrefoilan Park has now been finished; however, our plans to
move in at the end of the month have been put on hold. There is quite a long list of
snagging issues i.e. minor defects in construction that need to be put right before we
are able to move in. So for the end of January, read the end of February (perhaps!).
Thanks for help and support through all of the Christmas services.
Canon Phillip would like to thank everyone who
worked so hard in preparing for our Christmas
services. From our contractor and his team, to the
scaffolders, to the Fire Service in helping to put up
the external Christmas tree; to the group of men who
put the tree back up after the wind snapped it’s
trunk; to our organists, choristers, some of which helped at various services in
Singleton hospital; to Roger Rees who designed and produced our publicity material –
and to the merry band at St.Martin’s who leafleted the neighbouring streets; to
Gregory and Eileen and those who helped clean the church after the works; to the
flower arrangers and those who decorated the churches so beautifully. A special thank
you to all who prepared St.Martin’s for what was a magically intimate candle-lit carol
service; to Margaret Draisey who sang and her grand-daughter Jessica who played the
violin – truly a community event, in a packed church. Anyone who came along to any
of our Christmas services would have seen the church family at it’s best. Well done –
and thank you for your continued support and help.
God’s New Year’s honours list
We are all familiar with the Queen's New Year’s honours list, celebrating those who
have made a significant contribution to public life. In 2017 famous names included
Andy Murray, Mo Farah, Ken Dodd, Patricia Routledge, Angela Rippon and Victoria
Beckham. However, what would God's New Year’s honours list look like? In 1 Sam.
2:30 God says, ‘Those who honour me I will honour’. In this New Year, how can we
honour God in our lives?
Honouring God means giving Him reverence, submission, and obedience; the
complete surrender of our entire lives to His glory and loving service: ‘in view of God’s
mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your
Parish of Killay !4
2018

true and proper worship.’ (Romans 12:1). So, we might honour God this year in five
key areas:
My Time: how can I use my time to glorify God (Colossians 4:5)?
My Gifts: how am I using my God-given gifts and abilities in His service (Matthew
25:14-30)?
My Body: in what ways do I honour God in my body (1 Corinthians 6:18-20)?
My Treasure: who is in charge of my finances (Matthew 6:24)?
My Heart: how do I honour God, not just outwardly, but from my heart: ‘These people
come near to me with their mouth and honour me with their lips, but their hearts are
far from me’ (Isaiah 29:13)?
Here's a challenge for 2018: When we wake up each day, let’s ask God: ‘How can I
honour you today? Please help me to honour you with the time, gifts, body, finance,
and heart that you have given me.’ Jesus Christ gave His life for us, and promises to
give us the Holy Spirit to help us to serve Him. ‘When the worship is over, let the
service begin.’
The Theology of De-cluttering.
Forgetting what lies behind, I press on towards the goal. (Phil 3:13).
2018 – a New Year and a new home. As Sian and I prepare for the move to
Hendrefoilan Park, and the new Vicarage, having just enjoyed the last Christmas in
Tycoch Vicarage, we turn our attention to de-cluttering. not something to be taken
lightly!
An important aspect of spirituality is to live in the present, without letting the past hold
you captive, or the future make you anxious.
But in a house full of clutter, paying close attention to what is immediately in front of
you may be the last thing you want to do! Heaps of clutter
demands attention, because it occupies the space you need
to work in, because it hides the important thing you are
looking for, because it is difficult to keep clean, because you
literally risk falling over it and injuring yourself if you don't
pay attention.
The desire to clear clutter and live more simply can be strong,
but people often don't know how to begin. Just throw it all
Parish of Killay !5
2018

away and start again? There may be treasures buried in the junk! (And anyway,
recycling is more responsible than simple disposal.)
No matter how the process ends, de-cluttering always begins the same way – we set a
goal. What are you aiming to achieve? What will be the end result?
Your goal provides motivation, a sense of purpose when the mess is at its worst. With
no goal, you might just move stuff from one place to another, without sorting
through it. One room is cleared, but another is newly cluttered! So, it is better to go
through things by type – shoes, tools, pans, books, and so on – rather than room by
room. For example, do you really need 20 pairs of shoes, and eight screwdrivers? If
your goal is to keep only things you use at least once every year, then the answer
becomes easier.
Often clutter is inherited. Although you don't really want it, there is a sense of
obligation, guilt, or fear of what might happen if you give anything away. So, part of
your goal could include a change of attitude. Pray you will be able to see things for
what they really are. Pray for wisdom as you choose what to keep. Pray that you can
open your hands to let go of what you do not need. Pray for perseverance until your
goal is reached. Remember that clutter is as much in the mind as in the home.
Then begin. Gather your possessions into ‘like’ groups, and look at each thing in turn.
Make positive choices. How will this possession help you to reach your goal?
Surround yourself with beautiful, useful things that make living in the moment a joy
and a delight. Take the rest down to the nearest charity shop – where they may well
go on to light up someone else’s life.
Eve Chriswick, Daisy Williams, Eunice Miron, Fr. Roy Blewett (was hospitalised
but now at home), Gerry Harris (in Morriston Hospital).
We are pleased to see Tom Cole in church over the Christmas period - we were
also pleased to see Julie looking so relieved to have him with her.
We have just received the sad news of the death of David Morgan Lay Reader. David has been a
faithful, loyal servant to many vicars, serving and retired, of our Parish and also many other
Parishes in the area.
Service of Thanksgiving for the life of David Morgan (Lay Reader)
At the request of the family, David’s Funeral Service will take place at Llanelli Crematorium at 12
noon on Monday 15 th January, and will be conducted by Revd. Canon Ian Rees (Diocesan Warden
of Lay Readers). In light of the fact that there is to be no service in St.Hilary’s, Canon Phillip will be
holding a Eucharist of Celebration of David Morgan’s life and ministry early next month, please
watch for date in Weekly Newsletters shortly. This service will be on a Sunday morning, and the
Vicar appeals for those who wish to contribute in any way to this service to get in touch with him.

I would like to thank the Church Family and friends for the sincere messages of sympathy,
telephone calls, flowers, cards and visits received on the sudden death of my sister Carole.
Your support at this very sad time was greatly appreciated and helped to ease my pain as I tried to
support and ease the pain and shock of Carole's family.
News from the Lunch Club
We had a very busy year in the Lunch Club as it
appears to be getting more popular. We now have 33
members coming along for lunch every week and also
have a waiting list of people who would like to join us. We would love to say yes to everybody
but it would be unfair on the kitchen staff who work so hard preparing these meals every week,
as we are all volunteers.
Our first celebration was 1st March on St David’s Day, when we decorated the tables with the
Welsh emblems (daffodils, flags, Welsh dolls and leeks) which all looked very decorative.
Thank you for all the support we received, at both of our coffee mornings held in May and
November; it was lovely to see so many people coming in for a coffee and chat with friends.
On 7th June, we had a trip to Carmarthen for our annual meal at the Bush Inn; this was
followed by a ride on the Gwili Steam Railway which was thoroughly enjoyed by everybody.
Our second trip was on 13th September to Barry Island where we enjoyed a meal in a local
restaurant and then visited a garden centre before travelling home.
We have had lots of ‘special’ birthdays to celebrate this year when our members have brought
along birthday cake and wine which was appreciated by everybody.
We finished the year with our Christmas lunch, beautifully cooked by our kitchen staff and,
once again, thank you to the Dunvant Rugby Club Choir for coming along to wait at the tables
and then entertain us with carols.
For the past 3 years, we have been successful in gaining a lottery grant for our outings but this
year it has been ‘re-launched’ under another name and we were unsuccessful but still hope to
be arranging an outing to Brecon in the Spring.
Have you got something you would like to say? Read a good book? Seen a good film or play? Had
a good holiday? Recommend a recipe? Gardening tips? Something interesting or funny happened
to you? Tell us about it. There is a post box at the back of church – just drop in your contributions
and we will share them in the magazine. Or e-mail to reesfolk@btinternet.com Articles for the
magazine can be submitted any time up to the last Sunday of the month for publication the
following month.
David Peter Morgan (Lay Reader) R.I.P.
It was in the last days of the ebbing year, that we learned of
the death of David Morgan. David was a mine of
information, someone more usually with a happy smiling
demeanour. David was born in Brecon, a school master by
profession, but someone who professed a very real and
humble faith in God. For David was an Anglican through
and through. The Morgans moved to Dunvant with the
building of the new housing. In one of his several books,
this one entitled ‘The History of Killay’, David says “ In his
parochial letter of April 1954 the Rev. D. Lynne Davies
commented that Wimmerfield estate was growing rapidly
with the building of many new houses. In the next two
decades, there was a population explosion within the area as estate after estate took place;
in the Killay and Dunvant area: Wimmerfield, Broadmead, Woodcote, Derlwyn,
Hendrefoilan, Summerfield Park and Hen Parc Lane”.
It was to this population explosion that David served as Headteacher at Dunvant Primary
School. David taught the children and grand-children of many of these new residents.
David was a great local historian, regularly updating the history of his beloved St.Hilary’s
Church. David had a great fondness and affection for Chancellor Howell Hughes, Vicar here
for many years. It would be true to say that David saw clergy come – and he saw them go.
David was stalwart in his ministry as Lay Reader, ever ready to help and support the clergy in
whatever way he could.
David was an avid gardener, often to be found in his beautifully kept rear garden at his
home in Y Glyn. More than that, David became a judge in the annual Swansea in Bloom
competition. David was a regular contributor to the Killay Parish magazine, often writing of
reminiscences or nature or environmental issues.
Over his recent stays in Singleton Hospital, as Hospital Chaplain, I was able to have
numerous conversations with David, either prior to, or after receiving his Holy Communion,
which he held dear. David had a very real relationship with Christ, our hope and prayer is
that David is now raised in glory, to be with the God that walked with him in his earthly
journey of faith.
We thank you, Lord God, for the grace you gave to those who lived according to your will and
are now at rest. We pray that their good example may encourage and guide us all the days of
our life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
The Lady Plumber
You wonder what criteria is used to select people for the peace prize.
Read the story below and we then understand how pathetic and superficial our world has
become.
Remember this lady?
Irena Sender
Died: May 12, 2008 (aged 98)
Warsaw, Poland
During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw
ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. She had an ulterior
motive.
Irena smuggled Jewish infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried. She also
carried a burlap sack in the back of her truck, for larger kids. Irena kept a dog in the back
that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto.
The soldiers, of course, wanted nothing to do with the dog, and the barking covered the
kids/infants noises.
During her time of doing this, she managed to
smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants.
Ultimately, she was caught, however, and the Nazis
broke both of her legs and arms and beat her severely.
Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she had
smuggled out in a glass jar that she buried under a
tree in her back yard.
After the war, she tried to locate any parents that
may have survived and tried to reunite the family.
Most had been gassed.
Those kids she helped got placed into foster
family homes or adopted.
In 2007 Irena was up for the Nobel Peace
Prize.
She was not selected.
Music Society
Our December meeting was a festive
occasion, heartily enjoyed by all. We
were joined by our two church organists,
Lynne Novis and Chris Samuel, plus
some of their highly talented pupils and
friends. They entertained us with a
variety of instruments and even
encouraged us to join in!
Lynne introduced our first performer who
was Dafydd. He had just passed the
grade 4 examination with
Distinction on the alto saxophone.
He played the ‘Mexican Hat Dance’
and ‘Rudolph the Red Nosed
Reindeer’.
Next came Anna on the clarinet.
She had recently passed grade 5
with Distinction and entertained us
with ‘Music Hall’ and a lovely excerpt
called ‘Summer’, taken from the theme
music to the TV series ‘A Victorian Kitchen
Garden’. It was written specifically for the
clarinet.
Then, over to Chris who introduced Lucy
Li. She began learning to play the piano
at the age of 9 and is now 15. During
this short time, she has reached the high
standard of grade 7 and is waiting for the
results of her examination. Lucy played
the ‘Presto’ from a Haydn concerto.
Next came Sadie Newton on the flute.
She has reached grade 6 and Chris is
sometimes her accompanist. She played
Jerome Kern’s lovely song ‘Smoke Gets
In Your Eyes’.
Then Lynne took centre stage on an
enormous baritone saxophone. The
contra-bass is the lowest in sound and
the biggest. Young people sometimes
start on an alto saxophone
which only has half the number
of keys than is usual and is
therefore lighter. Lynne played
the ‘Londonderry Air’. This
arrangement was by Craig
Pickard and was, originally, for a
saxophone quartet but Chris, on
the piano, put in all the chords
that were missing. Chris then introduced
Julia Bytheway. Some years ago, Julia
was a concert musician on the clarinet
and piano but then gave it up for a while.
Chris met her 5 years ago and she began
again with her music. She has just
passed grade 8 on the piano. Chris and
Julia then played the first movement of
Beethoven’s 5th Symphony as a duet -
AMAZING!
Lynne then accompanied Josh on the C
melody saxophone, an instrument which
seems to have fallen out of favour at this
time. Josh has just passed grade 7 with
Distinction. He played ‘Valse Vanite’ by
Rudy Wiedoeft.
Then, it was our turn to join in this lovely
concert. With Chris on the piano and
Lynne and the performers on their
instruments, we all sang ‘O Come All Ye
Faithful’. Lynne is a teacher in Craigfelin
and Craigcefnparc schools where she
teaches music and signing. You can
guess what came next….she taught us to
sign ‘Away in a Manger’ - 3 verses! It was
quite a challenge but so interesting and
worthwhile. Then we all went back to our
Infant School days when a variety of bells,
triangles, castanets etc were distributed
for us to play ‘Jingle Bells’.
To calm us down after our contribution,
Chris took to the piano and played a
lovely melody called ‘Autumn Crocus’ by
Billy Mayerl. Then Johanna Blanck, a
Swedish young lady from Three Crosses,
played a Georges Geelo concerto on the
tenor saxophone - superb! Earlier this
year, Johanna passed grade 8 with
Distinction.
Finally, another wonderful treat from
Cesia Rees. Cesia won the under 16
woodwind competition at this year’s
National Eisteddfod on the flute. We were
all amazed and delighted by her
interpretation of ‘Concertino’ by
Chaminade.
What a wonderful evening of superb
music and some fun too. Pat Stratton
echoed all our admiration and enjoyment
in her vote of thanks.
We ended by joining together to enjoy
mince pies, stollen and mulled wine, tea
and coffee.
Mothers’ Union
On November 29 th, 37 members from different Branches met to hold a retreat or Quiet Day
in Nicholaston House, Gower in preparation for Advent. We were fortunate to be able to
enjoy our beautiful surroundings in glorious sunshine. Our day was led by Canon Dewi
Roberts, vicar of Ystradgynlais. He divided our day into three sessions: Waiting; Readiness;
Hoping. After each session we were asked to be silent to reflect on his words.
In Advent we are asked to wait patiently, as the first Christians did, for the coming of the
Kingdom of God. Waiting patiently in our “instant” world is not easy today. We can be so
easily distracted with all we have to do, mostly concerning this world not about what is to
come. Canon Roberts reminded us of the parable of the Prodigal Son in which Jesus
reminds us that God is waiting for us too.
Readiness involves really being ready at any time which is very challenging; in days gone by
preachers used images of “fire & brimstone” to control the population. This would not be
effective today as they would certainly be challenged! I think today that we need to use this
Advent time to perhaps review our lives & to refresh our faith.
Hoping: this is the theme of Advent. The saying “We live in hope” should not apply to
Christians as we have confidence in Jesus, our hope stems from Him. Jesus calls us to
transform Society, to bring “Light into the Dark Corners of the World” which is what
missionaries try to do. We light our Advent candles on each of the four Sundays in Advent as
a symbol of light & our hope in Jesus.
The day was interspersed with refreshments as usual & I think we all felt the day a timely
reminder of what the Advent season is REALLY about.
On December 5 th , M.U. members enjoyed an excellent Christmas lunch in Sketty Hall,
joined by members and friends from around the Deanery. Carole, Branch Leader, welcomed
everyone, giving a brief account of activities during the past year. A
queue formed around the tables to claim a present from the Lucky Dip
bags. The raffle completed the proceedings; those with winning tickets
claiming a prize from the generous supply donated.
On Wednesday, December 13 th , M.U. joined with Ladies Guild for the
annual carol service in church, followed by sherry and mince pies in the
Parish Centre. The Grand Christmas Draw was held during the evening.
We meet for the first time in 2018 on Tuesday, January 16 th at 2:00pm for Eucharist in the
church, followed by tea and biscuits in the Parish Centre.
The A.G.M. will be held in the Parish Centre on Tuesday, February 6 th .
The wise men came from
the East
On 6 th January we celebrate Epiphany - the
visit of the wise men (who had travelled from
the East), to the baby Jesus. But who were
these wise men? No one knows for sure.
Matthew calls them ‘Magi’, and that was the
name of an ancient caste of a priestly kind
from Persia. It wasn’t until the third century
that they were called kings - by a church
father, Tertullian.
Another church father, Origin, assumed there
were three - to correspond with the gifts
given. Later Christian interpretation came to
understand gold as a symbol of wisdom and
wealth, incense as a symbol of worship and
sacrifice, and myrrh as a symbol of healing -
and even embalming. Certainly Jesus
challenged and set aright the way in which
the world handled all three of these things.
Since the 8th century, the magi have had the
names Balthasar, Caspar and Melchior.
Where did the Wise Men come from? Magi
from the East – it isn’t a lot to go on. The Magi
had originally been a religious caste among
the Persians. Their devotion to astrology,
divination and the interpretation of dreams
led to an extension in the meaning of the
word, and by the first century the Magi in
Matthew’s gospel could have been
astrologers from outside of Persia. Some
scholars believe they might have come from
what was then Arabia Felix, or as we would say
today, southern Arabia.
Certainly, in the first century astrology was
practised there, and it was the region where
the Queen of Sheba had lived. She of course
had visited Solomon and would have heard
the prophecies about how one day a Messiah
would be born to the Israelites and become
their king.
Matthew’s gospel (Chapter 2) is clear that the
Magi asked Herod: ‘Where is the One who
has been born king of the Jews? We saw His
star in the east and have come to worship
Him.’ So it is possible that in southern Arabia
the Queen of Sheba’s story of how a Messiah
would one day be sent to the Israelites had
survived. Certainly, there are a number of
other early legends that connect southern
Arabia with Solomon’s Israel.
To many people this makes sense: that the
ancient stories of a Messiah, linked to later
astrological study, prompted these alert and
god-fearing men to the realisation that
something very stupendous was happening
in Israel. They realised that after all these
centuries, the King of the Jews, the Messiah,
was about to be born.
One more interesting thing that gives weight
to the theory that the magi came from
southern Arabia is this: if you study any map
of Palestine as it was during biblical times,
you will find that the old Arabian caravan
routes all entered Palestine ‘from the East’.
The story of the coming of the Magi grew in
the telling. By the 6 th century they had
acquired names: Gaspar, Melchior, and
Balthasar. By medieval times they were
considered to be kings. Whoever they were,
we do know from Matthew that they brought
three gifts to Jesus.
How do YOU see faith?
Our Lent course this year is called Faith Pictures
and is designed by Church Army. This is a short
course designed to help Christians talk
naturally to friends, neighbours and colleagues
about what they believe. The heart of the
course is about helping people to identify a
single picture or image that embodies
something of their faith. This is because the
kinds of communication which best stick in the
mind are concrete and rooted in story. The
course aims to be accessible and light-hearted,
without jargon or inflexible methods. To find out more, visit… www.faithpictures.org
The course has the following sessions: Opening the conversation, The power of the
ordinary, Travellers’ Tales, Talking pictures, Companions on the journey and Hidden
opportunities.
Lent this year begins in mid-February. As in previous years, it is hoped that this course
can be run across the Clyne Trinity Ministry Area. Firstly, we need people prepared to
open their homes and act as hosts. Secondly, we need people prepared to lead the
course material, all of which can be viewed online and is free. If you would like to be
involved in hosting, or leading a group, please contact Canon Phillip at your earliest
opportunity. By the end of the month, we need to have details of venues and days and
times – to enable people to sign up to attend.
It is hoped that we will be able to cross parish boundaries, to make new friends – and to
share our Faith Pictures.
News from Bruckmuhl
I've just heard from the conductor of youth choir, Lisa May, that Harald the group leader
and Pastor will retire on 21st January 2018. However, several of the sub-leaders have
decided to work together, as they have so enjoyed the area and our relationship with
them since 2004, and they are hoping to return with a group in the summer of 2018.
They are waiting to see what the take up will be, so it is not farewell but aufiedesen "until
the next time” - we’d better start saving and cooking again!!
Our friends from Bavaria wish to send their love to you all this Christmastide and New Year
and I have sent a reciprocal message on behalf of all at St Hilary and St Martin.
The Week of Prayer for
Christian Unity
This year the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity runs
from 18 th to 25 th January. The theme of the week
this year comes from the churches of the Caribbean, and addresses some of the
problems which affect the people there, but also worldwide.
Thus, as abuses of human rights are found across the region, the week will challenge
us to consider our manner of welcoming the stranger into our midst. Human
trafficking and modern-day slavery continue to be huge issues. Addiction to
pornography and drugs continue to be serious challenges to all societies. The debt
crisis has a negative impact upon the nations and upon individuals – the economies of
the nations and people have become precarious. Family life continues to be
challenged by the economic restrictions which lead to migration, domestic abuse and
violence.
What are Christians to do, in the face of such vast problems? The Caribbean Churches
work together to heal the wounds in people’s lives, but also know that reconciliation
demands repentance, reparation and the healing of memories. The whole Church is
called to be both a sign and an active agent of this reconciliation.
Ladies Guild
On 29 th November, hungry Guild members descended on Sketty Hall for their Christmas lunch
and they were not disappointed; the food was delicious, the wine was flowing and the service
faultless. After lunch we were entertained by Jonathan Lycett, playing and singing a medley of
seasonal songs, telling jokes and then led some carol singing. The atmosphere was great! The
time passed very quickly and it was soon time for everyone to draw the “Secret Santa” prizes. Once
again the afternoon was a great success, so much so that Gwynneth has already booked the venue
for 2018.
d
Our first speaker this month was Esme Wood, who is a regular visitor to Ladies’ Guild. She read
short articles from magazines, extracts from newspapers and poems, but all of these had her
unique twist. She talked about the many diets she had tried, explaining that
if you go to Weight Watchers, you stand on a scale, pay £5 and are then told
that you are fat, which you already knew! She recommended a coconut and
banana diet, you’ll still be fat but you’ll be better than anyone else at
climbing trees. Her favourite was the gin diet. Drink a bottle a day, you’ll
still be fat but you really won’t care! She talked about ageism, claiming that
the best thing about it is the lack of peer pressure.
Esme had read an article entitled, “Why can’t Santa be a man?” She gave us just some of the
answers: Men can’t pack a bag. Men don’t wear red velvet. Men never answer their mail. Men
won’t stop to ask directions when they are lost. Men leave all their shopping until Christmas Eve.
She then posed some more questions. Why is it that we are willing to believe that there are over 4
billion stars, but we have to touch doors to check if the paint is still wet? Why do we press harder
on the remote control, when we know that the battery is dead? Why do we go back to check that
the door we locked minutes ago is still locked?
It was a wonderful light hearted evening. We laughed from beginning to end, proving that
laughter really is the best medicine.
d
Our last meeting of 2017 was the Ladies Guild and Mothers Union combined Carol Service which
was led, for the first time, by our our lay ministry members Barbara Roberts and John Williams
with readings by Guild and Mothers Union members. John read the final reading from St John's
Gospel. Our sincere thanks to John and Barbara for leading such meaningful worship.
Following the service, the Grand Raffle was drawn in the Parish Centre, where sherry and mince
pies were served by the Guild committee. The majority of the prizes were won by Guild, MU and
Church members.
Ladies Guild committee and members wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year.
‘Show people the power of our faith’ – Archbishop
Young people would high-five the prophet Job and queue for selfies with Jesus if they
properly understood Christianity, said the new Archbishop of Wales today.
In his address at his enthronement as the 13th Archbishop of Wales, John Davies
challenged churches to ‘rehabilitate and refresh’ how they explained the Gospel
message, particularly to young people. Being a Christian, he said, was not about just
going to church.
He said, “We are not always seen for the good which we do, or for the just causes which
we support or further, or for the justice and truth for which we call.”
He said, “Let churches resolve to face down the caricature of being an institution,
focussed on simply surviving and being against things.
“Let churches and their charities, resolve to proudly affirm caring, loving and openhanded
initiatives which, often in partnership with others, they are already taking;
supporting and affirming needy communities and people. They work through things
such as family centres, food-banks, night-shelters, homelessness projects, in
chaplaincies and schools, in towns and cities through the work of street-pastors,
through aid agencies rebuilding broken and struggling communities in destitute
places some of us have never even heard of, and in so many other ways. Often the
work goes unseen, as does a remarkable amount ordinary but supportive community
engagement at home. But, in such ways what churches say they believe takes flesh,
has real meaning, and the kingdom comes. We must be ready and not afraid or
ashamed to say so and explain so.
“That should become part of what I believe has to be a commitment to an overdue
drive to rehabilitate and refresh how we explain the Gospel message, helping others
really grasp that it’s not simply about going to church.”
The Archbishop said he had an ‘active and deep concern’ for witness to young people
who were not associating the Gospel message with their own strong sense of right.
He said, “So many of them so evidently have a deep and clearly-articulated sense of
moral right. They are keenly aware of the need for social and economic justice, the
stewardship of creation, and equality of opportunity; they are equally aware of the
need for a society free from any form of prejudice rooted in anything which is part of
the individual identity, gender, race, origin, religion or orientation of anyone.
Parish of Killay !22
2018

“Interestingly, they also often have a deep admiration for ideals which actually are
found in scripture – they would give Job a high-five or even a hug, they would
encourage the Colossians to put on that overcoat of blood-red love; they would be
blown away by the radical teachings of Jesus, the Good Shepherd – and, if they could,
would almost certainly have a selfie taken with him! Perhaps, however, they don’t
associate our sometimes-struggling churches with these things, or hear those churches
saying a clear enough ‘hear hear’ to them.”
Archbishop John also urged everyone to speak up against injustice and oppression.
He said, “Beyond the churches and religion, can we not all simply resolve, in our
increasingly divided, bewildered and uneven society, to be clothed with goodness, to
call to account and encourage the reform of individuals and entities which deliberately
or by stealth, neglect and carelessness collude in oppressing minorities, burdening the
poor and robbing individuals of their dignity?”
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU CAN’T SLEEP
•* If you attempt to rob a bank you
• The word "swims" upside-down and backwards is
still “swims”.
• Intentionally losing a game of rock, paper,
• 100 years ago everyone owned a horse and only the rich
The Wise Men and St Paul were both on trips when they first encountered Jesus,
but how different those trips were! The Wise Men, whom we remember on
Epiphany (6 th Jan), were seeking the One for whom the Star shone, and came to
Bethlehem to worship him. St Paul, whose conversion we remember this month
(26 th Jan), was on his way to Damascus, seeking to kill those who worshipped Jesus.
When the Wise Men encountered the baby Jesus, they worshipped him and gave him
gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. When St Paul, the proud, fanatical Pharisee,
encountered Jesus, he fell blinded on the road, and then worshipped him by giving
him the rest of his life. St Paul endured years of suffering and hardships in his work
as the great apostle to the Gentiles. His mighty faith in Christ has kindled similar
belief in many hundreds of millions of people down the centuries.
