Chairman’s Musings
Well, another year is almost done, and as is customary at this
time of year, it seems appropriate to look back over 2017 from
a Jávea Players perspective. I did think that this year might be a
bit of an anti-climax after the excitement of our 40th
Anniversary celebrations in 2016. Not a bit of it! On many
fronts, the past year has continued to show that our Society
goes from strength to strength!
In particular, we have put on another varied and exciting year
in terms of our Programme. We began the year with Roger’s
production of “Sandcastles,” followed that up with another very
enjoyable Summer Show, and brought things to a conclusion
with Ron’s great production of On Golden Pond at Gata. I must
say how much I enjoyed the latter. Great performances from all
the cast, a terrific set, excellent sound and lighting and slick
stage management delivered another show in keeping with
our traditions, resulting in complementary reviews and positive
feedback from our audiences. Thank you Ron, and your cast
and crew for giving so much pleasure to many of us. As one
email I received said, ‘This wasn’t amateur theatre, this was real
theatre.’
This year has also seen great progress in our development of
the Society’s facilities. We have made improvements to our
Studio, particularly the new Air Conditioning, and have moved
into the ClothesProp. We now have decent space to store all
our costumes and props and the Shed Management Team
have begun to re-organise our workshop and technical space.
Finally I must thank everyone who has helped to make this past
year so successful for Jávea Players. We depend on many
people, both on and off stage to make this happen and without
you all, we could not do what we do. Especially, I must thank
our Committee and the PPC. They all put in long hours, often
unnoticed, but without their efforts we could not be the Society
we are.
May I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and
Prosperous New Year.

Are There More of You? performed by Alison
Skilbeck
Do you remember Tim Hardy who performed
Galileo for us a few years ago? Now, his wife
Alison is coming to perform in the Studio for a
week.
In her own one-woman comedy drama Alison
Skilbeck, who appeared in The Archers, Sherlock
Holmes, Miss Marple, Doctor Who, tells the
linked tales of four women reaching out in the
dark, revealing what lies behind the brave faces
of Claire, Sophia, Sara and Sam. Painful, scary
and hilarious by turn, with only a SW postcode
in common, the stories chart each wildly
different character’s search for love and
happiness.

Alison will also run an Acting Workshop for
members on Wednesday January 24th between

A Party after the show on the 27th
January 2018
The last night of Are There More of You? will be a
“Jávea Players’ Night”. We plan a party for JP
Members and Friends. If Members are with
friends they may join us too. Tapas will be catered
by Area1, the restaurant almost next door to the
Studio, which will cost 5€ per head.
This will be a chance for a social and to chat with
Alison.

publicise the show on December 12th and open
bookings to the public.

Silver Lining
Sandi Toksvig’s comedy, set in the upper day
room of the Silver Retirement Home in Gravesend
and directed by Penny Grant, is JP’s play for next
Spring at Gata.
A storm has been raging and the flood waters are
rising when five elderly women realise that noone
is coming to rescue them. A ‘temp’ nurse
arrives, who initially is no help at all, and a
‘removal man’ arrives who has ideas of his own as
to what to remove.

Trading stories of their remarkable (or
sometimes unremarkable) lives, they are faced
with the realisation that in order to survive they
are going to have to do what they have done all
their lives. Face the danger and do it themselves
- Senior Citizen Style!

December 8th sees our Christmas Party in the
Studio. With a tapas-style buffet provided by our
friends at Area 1 and an ‘impromptu’ variety
entertainment planned, a jolly good evening is
promised to all who attend. What better way to

Studio Theatre hire
Please don't forget that the Jávea Players Studio
Theatre is available to hire. We would like all
members to help us promote it so that we can
secure a better return on our investment!
Here are the details:
• Seats 65 people (using the seating
rostra)
• Bar is available – it can be run by the
users and then restocked after the event,
or drinks can be sold at the published JP
Studio Theatre bar prices and the
proceeds paid to the Jávea Players, with
us handling the restocking.
• The rental cost is only €12 per hour.
• Contact the Studio Manager to check

During the event, Mike Martin signed up
interested people for an acting course that we
plan to run early next year. Please contact Mike if
you would like to join the class.
Jackie Jefferies/Carole Saunders/Pat Doidge
were looking for singing talent and generated
interest in a singalong which they plan to run in
the New Year in the Studio.
Penny & Keith Grant had people interested in
play reading, as well as several potential new
members.
Phil Mansell - had good interest in play writing,
especially in “Poor Yorick”, his play that we will
perform for the Summer Show next year.
Jen Ward - had great fun with her make-up table,
making up half of her face! She also had a go at
making up Quico Moragues!

Open Day – A great Success!!
Our first Open Day took place on Sunday 15 th
October, and by all accounts, was a big success.
The event was planned in order to:
• To raise awareness of the latest Jávea
Players’ activities and developments.
• To enlist more members (especially
younger members!)
• To promote our future performances
The day was officially opened by Quico
Moragues (Jávea Councillor for Culture) who
told us that the Ayuntamiento appreciated what
the Jávea Players do for the town in providing a
high standard of English theatre. He also
advised us that they plan to open the new Jávea
Theatre in 2019, and that they hoped that we
would use this facility for our future productions.
Jen Kellow-Ward does a make-up masterclass on Quico Moragues
Richard King/Peter Sparks - had lots of interest
in the sound table
James/Cherry/Richard - put on a light and
sound demo.
Bernard covered the event and has since sent out
an excellent press release. The coverage in the
local press and radio was excellent.
Peter Sparks was very busy filming for the
planned video of the event and we await the final
results with interest!
Kay Cope ran the "Interesting Props" table.

Anne Bentley put on a display of costumes.
Cherry - signed up a number of new
members, one of whom is interested in
helping with set design & construction.
Paul & Helen - did a great job running the
open bar and providing the cava.
Josephine did an excellent job with the
display boards.
Peter & Hugh did everything else!
The media coverage, before and after the
event, should do a lot to raise the Jávea
Players’ profile in our community. Hopefully
it will generate more interest in our group,
and will result in new members who can
bring us even more skills and support!
On Golden Pond
and Ann Skinner, a special mention must go to
young Luke Holmes whose portrayal of Billy-
Ray showed great promise for such a young
man.
And we mustn’t forget our wonderful support
teams, led by Hugh Epsom and far too
numerous to all be named here. The set was
excellent and the view from the window across
the Golden Pond was delightful. The set and
stage dressing gave the real feel of a log cabin
that was the summer home of an elderly
couple and I loved the haunting sound of the
‘loons’ calling across the lake. The lighting
effects were excellent and showed the ‘lake’
off to perfection. Publicity, Press, Bar and Box
Office ran as smooth as silk.
Well done to all involved!
A big thank you
A Big Thank You from the Shed Team following
the tool request in the last newsletter. Various
donated items have reduced the intended
purchase list of equipment. If anyone still has
tools that they would like to donate please
contact Peter on petermessinger@icloud.com .
Another artistic triumph last month, for
J á v e a P l a y e r s w i t h R o n S k i n n e r ’s
production of Ernest Thompson’s On
Golden Pond. Audience reaction to the
show was overwhelmingly positive.
If you remembered the overly sentimental
Henry Fonda vehicle of the 1980s, you may
h a v e g o n e t o G a t a f e e l i n g a b i t
apprehensive. But Mike Martin and
Rosemary Brown brought a spark and a
wittiness to their portrayals of Norman and
Ethel Sayer that I don’t remember from
Fonda and Katherine Hepburn. Ably
supported by Leigh Patterson (Chelsea)

Trailer for sale
The trailer that was acquired some years ago
by the Jávea Players is now to be sold. If
anyone is interested in the purchase of this
sturdy little trailer then Peter Messinger would
like to hear from you before we advertise in
the local media. Once again contact Peter if
you are interested.

Management Committee Secretary. She

Following the retirement of our longstanding
Press Officer, Bernard King,
Gillian Ashworth did a fine job standing
in for him with On Golden Pond. Hopefully
we can persuade her to continue!
The Future Programme
The PPC meet regularly to discuss and
recommend a theatrical programme for
the members to perform and the public to
enjoy.
In the pipeline as I write, are Alison
Skilbeck’s one-woman show Are There
More of You? and Sandy Toksvig’s hilarious
comedy Silver Linings, both of which are
detailed earlier in this newsletter.
The summer dinner show in the square in
the Old Town sees Phil Mansell’s Poor
Yorick make its premiere in Spain. Yes, this
is the same Phil Mansell who joined JP last
year and is an award-winning, published
playwright!
More details will follow after Christmas, but
Poor Yorick is an hilarious spoof on the
s t o r y o f t h e J e s t e r f e a t u r e d i n
Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and before you ask, no
you don’t need to know much about Hamlet
or to like Shakespeare!
Phil at the recent Open Day with his copy of Poor Yorick
Next November’s play in the Studio will see a
complete contrast when Lindsay Johnson
directs the gripping courtroom drama Rough
Justice about a man accused of murdering
his disabled child. Full of drama and pathos,
this play will give members a real challenge
with some serious and meaty roles to get
their teeth into.
2019 will be here before we know it and
Jávea Players is going to put on a musical for
the first time in nearly twenty years, with a
production of Lerner and Lowe’s My Fair Lady.
Cherry Cabban will direct, so loosen up those
vocal chords and come and join in!

BOX OFFICE- Volunteers
Would you help with Box Office? As you
know people now book and pay for their
tickets on the web page, it makes the Box
Office function a great deal easier but we
still need a person to monitor the email
account and the web page for each
production. It is one of the many key
tasks that makes for a successful
production.

JP Rules
We have been asked if it is possible for
Members to see the Society’s Rules. Javea
Players have Statutes as part of our legal
registration process, they contain our official
Rules. We then have Internal Rules that we use
to govern our day to day operations. We have
an English translation of the Spanish Statutes.
