Volume 22 Issue 4 December 2017 Studio Theatre hire Please don't forget that the Jávea Players Studio Theatre is available to hire. We would like all members to help us promote it so that we can secure a better return on our investment! Here are the details: • Seats 65 people (using the seating rostra) • Bar is available – it can be run by the users and then restocked after the event, or drinks can be sold at the published JP Studio Theatre bar prices and the proceeds paid to the Jávea Players, with us handling the restocking. • The rental cost is only €12 per hour. • Contact the Studio Manager to check availability and book. Please contact Mike if you would like to join the class. Jackie Jefferies/Carole Saunders/Pat Doidge were looking for singing talent and generated interest in a singalong which they plan to run in the New Year in the Studio. Penny & Keith Grant had people interested in play reading, as well as several potential new members. Phil Mansell - had good interest in play writing, especially in “Poor Yorick”, his play that we will perform for the Summer Show next year. Jen Ward - had great fun with her make-up table, making up half of her face! Our first Open Day took place on Sunday 15 th October, and by all accounts, was a big success. The event was planned in order to: • To raise awareness of the latest Jávea Players’ activities and developments. • To enlist more members (especially younger members!) • To promote our future performances The day was officially opened by Quico Moragues (Jávea Councillor for Culture) who told us that the Ayuntamiento appreciated what the Jávea Players do for the town in providing a high standard of English theatre. He also advised us that they plan to open the new Jávea Theatre in 2019, and that they hoped that we would use this facility for our future productions. Jen Kellow-Ward does a make-up masterclass on Quico Moragues Richard King/Peter Sparks - had lots of interest in the sound table James/Cherry/Richard - put on a light and sound demo. Bernard covered the event and has since sent out an excellent press release. The coverage in the local press and radio was excellent. Peter Sparks was very busy filming for the planned video of the event and we await the final results with interest! Kay Cope ran the "Interesting Props" table. 4
Volume 22 Issue 4 December 2017 Anne Bentley put on a display of costumes. Cherry - signed up a number of new members, one of whom is interested in helping with set design & construction. Paul & Helen - did a great job running the open bar and providing the cava. Josephine did an excellent job with the display boards. Peter & Hugh did everything else! The media coverage, before and after the event, should do a lot to raise the Jávea Players’ profile in our community. Hopefully it will generate more interest in our group, and will result in new members who can bring us even more skills and support! On Golden Pond and Ann Skinner, a special mention must go to young Luke Holmes whose portrayal of Billy- Ray showed great promise for such a young man. And we mustn’t forget our wonderful support teams, led by Hugh Epsom and far too numerous to all be named here. The set was excellent and the view from the window across the Golden Pond was delightful. The set and stage dressing gave the real feel of a log cabin that was the summer home of an elderly couple and I loved the haunting sound of the ‘loons’ calling across the lake. The lighting effects were excellent and showed the ‘lake’ off to perfection. Publicity, Press, Bar and Box Office ran as smooth as silk. Well done to all involved! A big thank you A Big Thank You from the Shed Team following the tool request in the last newsletter. Various donated items have reduced the intended purchase list of equipment. Another artistic triumph last month, for J á v e a P l a y e r s w i t h R o n S k i n n e r ’s production of Ernest Thompson’s On Golden Pond. Audience reaction to the show was overwhelmingly positive. If you remembered the overly sentimental Henry Fonda vehicle of the 1980s, you may h a v e g o n e t o G a t a f e e l i n g a b i t apprehensive. But Mike Martin and Rosemary Brown brought a spark and a wittiness to their portrayals of Norman and Ethel Sayer that I don’t remember from Fonda and Katherine Hepburn. Ably supported by Leigh Patterson (Chelsea) Michael O’Neill (Charlie), Nigel Poole (Bill) Trailer for sale The trailer that was acquired some years ago by the Jávea Players is now to be sold. If anyone is interested in the purchase of this sturdy little trailer then Peter Messinger would like to hear from you before we advertise in the local media.
