Pastor’s Message
By Rev. Dr. Neil Buono
Grace and peace to you dear friends in Christ.
Summer is past the midpoint now. We just closed an AWESOME Vacation
Bible School week! Kudos to Christie Bauerle, Laurie Fritz, Macie Smith and
EVERYONE involved in putting this together and delivering a great
experience to over 160 children and youth. Patty Bullock and the preschool
staff ran the preschool portion of the week for our youngest high seas
travelers.
In a few weeks regular school will begin again for our young people. To help children, youth
and families launch the school year we will have our annual blessing of the backpacks on
Sunday morning, August 29 th . Watch the bulletin for more info on the details.
Soon, our summer will draw to a close. Next month, I will have more to say about the fall
schedule but let me throw this out there for you to think about – what would happen if our
community of faith would make a serious commitment to be part of our Christ Care Small
Group Bible Studies? How might our processes of stewardship, fellowship and evangelism be
transformed by gathering regularly for worship on Sunday and then again for a small group
experience? I invite you to prayerfully consider this over the next weeks.
Also, I have heard from many of you regarding our single service this summer and what I am
hearing is loud and clear – WE LIKE IT! I expect a decision on this before the next newsletter
goes to print, so watch the September newsletter for the fall schedule.
Finally, Carolyn and I had a great vacation. Thank you for the opportunity to get away! And
thank you for the opportunity to continue serving you. Have a great rest of the summer.
The Lord bless and be with you.
POP VBS Wrap-up and Thank you
By Christie Bauerle, VBS Director
Wow, what a fabulous week at the High Seas Expedition! We registered 48 preschool students and Kindergarten
through 5 th grade registered 124. We averaged 160 students each day. Thankfully, we had 5 adult and 40 student
crew leaders, age 6 th grade and up. Of course there were the Station Leader/Preschool Teacher and all the
assistants everyday that added up to another 45 adults and young people. So, as you can tell we had a lot of
movement going on in the church. “Let’s Go” was the catch phrase for the week and boy did we!
I want to thank everyone who was a part of VBS. For those who helped for the first time with me this year, I hope
you will consider volunteering again next year. For you veterans, I have your numbers on speed dial! Laurie and
Patty, I couldn’t do it without you both. You are great to work with and I know I can count on you to get the job
done. VBS can not be successful without all the support received from people physically volunteering and
financially donating. Thanks to this great congregation, VBS snacks were completely covered for the week! You
are all awesome for helping out in that way.
Our VBS children’s offering is being donated to the Food for the Poor Program. They raised through the week
$336.83. This money will be sent on their behalf to help build homes in Haiti. Children also made comfort blankets
on Friday that will be sent to children in Africa.
I am excited to report to you that our closing program/ice cream social appeared to be another huge success. We
had about 325 people signed up to attend and I believe that most of them were there. The sanctuary was full.
Many thanks to Pastor Buono, Macie and Boone Smith, Chuck Atherton, Spencer Skrdlant and Hannah Fritz for
welcoming everyone and providing a skit for entertainment. Parents and friends were also able to watch the
spotlight dramas and see candid pictures taken throughout the week from Kristi Bruce, Sonja Hoglund and Lacey
Hileman. Ice cream was served up for us by Claudia Sokolowski, Ruth Slyter, Delores Carroll, Jayna Gaston and
Kira Hall. Thank you ladies for keeping up with the pace and helping me clean up.
The silent auction for our former Bible Buddy Characters was very good. It raised approximately $500.00 which
will go to help fix up our church nursery. The winners were announced on Friday night, and if they were not there
to take home their Buddy, they were notified by phone of their new addition to their home. Melinda Skrdlant is
the talent behind all those Bible Buddies and our new ones for this year too. She also created the “stage”
decorations we have seen all week. What an amazing job she does! Thank you Melinda for all your creativity and
to your family who helps you work on the decorations and set them up.
Also Auburn’s Gambinos Manager, Jaime Clausing, provided us with a discount on ice cream
for our closing program Both treats really hit the spot this week!
I certainly hope I have not forgotten anyone. Many of us wore many different hats along the
way. Thank you to Nikki Anderson for waiting to print the August Newsletter to enable me
to get our VBS news and pictures in.
May God bless us all for what I consider a “job well done!”
POP Preschool Wrap-up
It was a busy, busy year at Prince of Peace Preschool servicing over a hundred
families. We began our year by celebrating the start with the “Blessing of the
Backpacks” and ended just last week with VBS sharing the Good News of Jesus
Christ. The weeks flew by; now we are almost complete with our preparations
for the 2010-11 school year. The teachers will kick-off the school year July 31 at
an all day Early Childhood Conference at Faith Lutheran. We are looking forward
to our time with other faith-filled teachers from the Kansas District.
Last fall was our busy time to fundraise with our new “Mixed Bag” sales and the
carnival. There were also parent/teacher conferences, field trips and celebrations for the holidays with our
annual Christmas sing with the children and their families. We also said a tearful good-bye to our long time
friend, Leroy.
The winter months brought lots of snow and ice. We participated in “Valentines for Vets” with the Sunday school.
More conferences in February and March, and believe it or not, enrollment for fall and tours began! Parents asked
for another “Mixed Bag” sale to further our fundraising efforts. Our spring time bake sale and preschool sing
flooded the church with families.
and jumped in wading pools.
A big hit was our secret surprise show for LWML. The children purchased items for
the church kitchen at various stores, wrapped them and presented them to our
LWML friends to open. Just like Christmas all over! The children loved watching
the ladies’ expressions as they opened the packages.
Six weeks of summer school was fun in the sun … and heat! We went on some
really fun field trips to the library, the donut shop (where we dipped and
decorated our own) and even rode a city bus! We had plenty of time to cool off
on water days when we sprayed our friends with water, rode down the water slide
We have just wrapped up our year at VBS sailing the high seas of adventure. I co-directed this year’s VBS, once
again with Christie Bauerle. The preschool was at capacity. We saw many of our graduates still coming to VBS.
Some now serve as crew leaders and teachers! The preschool classes are staffed by our teachers (both current
and former). We had so much fun singing songs, playing games and learning more about Jesus with our church
friends.
Our parents are required to raise a minimum of $8500 to offset expenses of the
school. This year they raised even more. Our 10% donation back to the church
from our fundraising will be close to $1000.00. We also contributed generously
to the 126 campaign, purchased a commercial vacuum for the church, gifted our
annual donation to Mary Hume’s ministry for the parish nurse program, and of
course contributed over $200.00 for the LWML kitchen needs. Thank you to our
parents for their hard work! We also thank you, the members of POP for your
continued support of our program.
I would also like to thank the staff and the board of our preschool for their faithful service. Because of your love
of children and dedication to quality, we continue to surpass other programs in early childhood education.
CHOIR NEWS
By Donna Eakins
Hi everybody!
It's time to begin thinking about SINGING PRAISES TO OUR LORD BY BEING IN Choir.
CHOIR will begin rehearsals on THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 9th at 6:30PM
Please note the change in TIME! Much earlier for the young so they can get home to be with their families, do
their homework etc......... and much earlier for the "less young" so we may return home before it's way past
"jammie time!"
I would also like to invite the YOUTH in our congregation to join us! I have spoken with three of them and they
seemed very receptive! YOUTH means junior high and above. Many of you have gifts that can be shared and
used by our Lord to His glory! Please join us!
If you see / hear someone that you think would be a good choir member, PLEASE encourage them to become a
part of worshiping our Lord.
Singing for services will begin SEPTEMBER 12th, 2010. Blessings to all of you and hope to see you in Choir on
Thursday evenings.
Have YOU Heard About LWML?
Did you know that each and every woman attending POP is considered a member of LWML?
Did you know that LWML has monthly Bible studies and helps with various church events?
Did you know that members of LWML provide meals for families following a funeral?
Did you know that LWML raises funds during the year to support mission activities, both inside and outside the
church?
Did you know that the service project this year has been to gather items for health kits for areas in the world, like
Haiti, that have suffered a natural disaster?
It's Time, Ladies, to Mark Your Calendars!
The Annual LWML Salad Supper will be August 12 at 6 pm at the home of Bob and Sallee Lee. All POP ladies are
invited to attend. We will gather in the church parking lot at 5:30 and carpool/caravan to the Lee’s home. It will be a
fun evening. In addition to enjoying a buffet of salads brought by those attending, we will learn more about LWML,
see what's on the calendar this year and put together those health kits.
So, dig out your best salad recipe and join us on August 12! We look forward to seeing you!

Service Themes for Seasons and Sundays of the Year 2010
(August 1st through September 5th)
The Sundays after Pentecost – This summer, our services will provide us the opportunity to build community and grow
in faith. Our single service at 10 am will be a blended service with a mixture of traditional and contemporary hymnody.
Some Sundays will be themed musically. The Sundays of June and the beginning of July, we will do a sermon series
from the Book of Galatians. The overall theme of this series is Living by the Gospel. The rest of August our themes will
come out of the appointed readings from the Gospel of Luke, and will continue the theme of Gospel living. August 29 th
we will include the blessing of the backpacks as part of our service.
And Making a Living: Labor Day Encouragement
According to Genesis 1:26, God did not give us ownership of creation, but "to rule over" creation. God is the
source of all things and has retained His ownership. Paul reminds us in I Corinthians 4:7 that all things come
from God. "What do you have that you did not receive?" With this knowledge and understanding we would be
correct to substitute the word "returning" for "giving" because, through our giving we are simply returning to
God what He has already given to us.
When we consider how much to give (return) to our church and other Christian missions, we will then be asking
ourselves, "How much of God's money am I going to keep?"
NOTE FROM DON AND CECILE PENNEY
We want to thank everyone for your prayers, cards and visits during the past months. We ask that you
continue to pray for us as we continue our treatments and hopes of remission.
NOTE ABOUT ALTAR FLOWERS
If you are planning to have flowers on the altar this year, all orders need to be made for flowers at
the Fairlawn Plaza Dillon’s instead of the Urish Road Dillon’s.
