AN INTERVIEW WITH
MUHAMAD ALOYSIUS HENG
A True
FAMILY
MAN
ON THE SURFACE MUHAMAD ALOYSIUS HENG LOOKS LIKE A NO-NONSENSE BUSINESS MAN.
HOWEVER TALK TO HIM FOR ANY AMOUNT OF TIME AND YOU SOON DISCOVER THAT AT HIS CORE
HE’S REALLY MORE OF A FAMILY MAN.
Arriving slightly late to the interview in true Malaysian fashion,
I enter the room still sweating from the glaring sun that’s
beating down outside. As I enjoy the sweet relief of the air
conditioning, I scan the scarcely decorated room, until I find
who I’m looking for. Muhamad Aloysius Heng is a gentle,
elderly man with a kind face. He has a firm handshake but
speaks in a soft voice, and as we talk; while I get set up, I can’t
help but notice his friendly manner and amicable charms.
J.H. Thank you for letting us interview you, my first
question is - how would you describe your work?
M.A.H. I am an equipment and parts supplier for the Oil
and Gas Industries, so my job involves communicating with
manufacturers in Europe and the US to procure supplies
that our local customers need. The job is often quite challenging
as the parts required are highly specialised and I often
have to use my expertise to propose solutions between
my clients’ needs and what the suppliers can provide.
And how long have you been in that line of work?
I’ve been working in this particular job for 25 years now.
That’s remarkable by today’s standards! What do you
think are the traits you think you need to make it in
your industry, particularly for that long?
Technical know-how plays a large role in what I do, but I really
feel that the key to my line of work comes from the commitment
I make to each of my customers. I always keep the
promises I make to them, even if at times that has seemed
impossible to do! I feel this is because when you say you are
going to have a part that someone needs on a certain day;
you have to have it by then. I’ve learnt a lot over the years,
but I think that being dedicated to helping those around you
will take you far in life.
Is that a value you look for? I mean is that how you
decided on a Tropicana property? ➢
