Saluting those who served
Glenview residents
make valentines
for local veterans
Jeremy Turley
Freelance Reporter
It’s undeniable that military
service is ingrained
in Glenview’s culture and
history. As recently as
1995, the Glenview Naval
Air Station prepared
soldiers to fight for their
country.
As young men, astronaut
Neil Armstrong and former
presidents Gerald Ford and
George H.W. Bush learned
their commitment to service
at the air base.
Over the last two decades,
the training sites and
landing strips became restaurants
and condos.
The name changed, as
well. It’s now called The
Glen.
However, Glenview’s
history of service has not
been lost on the younger
generations. Nearly 15
young residents — and a
few older ones — turned
out to make Valentine’s
Day cards for veterans on
Jan. 12 at the Glenview
Public Library.
Using construction paper,
scissors, stickers and
markers, participants created
more than 50 cards
with messages of love and
gratitude.
Oliver Wolf, 11, was the
first one in the room and
stayed for more than an
hour. With a look of concentration
displayed on his
face, he crafted about 10
cards. Most of them read,
“Thank you for your service.”
“I thought I could just
do something for all those
people who served our
country,” Wolf said. “If
Glenview resident Diane Picciuca creates a valentine
during Valentines for Vets on Jan. 12 at the Glenview
Public Library. Jeremy Turley/22nd Century Media
they didn’t exist, I probably
wouldn’t be the person I
am now.”
Many of the young participants
were students
at Our Lady of Perpetual
Help School, which is located
just across the street
from the library.
However, not every
cardmaker was of school
age. Retiree Diane Picciuca
moved to Glenview a few
months ago after her husband,
a Korean War veteran,
died.
Picciuca wanted to show
gratitude for those who,
like her late husband, made
a great sacrifice for their
country. She saw the Valentines
for Vets event in
the library’s calendar and
decided it would be an excellent
way to do just that.
“I thought in honor of
[my husband], I would like
to do this,” Picciuca said.
“I know I enjoy receiving a
card, and I think it’s wonderful
that they’re going to
be taking the cards to veterans
that probably might not
receive one or might not
have a family in the area.”
Picciuca said her husband
never received a card
from a stranger thanking
him for his service, but that
he would have appreciated
the thought someone put
into it.
The cards will go to sick
and disabled veterans at
the Edward Hines Jr. VA
Hospital in Hines, Illinois.
The event is part of the
weeklong National Salute
to Veterans, which overlaps
with Valentine’s Day.
Leadership at the Glenview
Public Library decided
to bring back the
card-making campaign after
a hiatus of a few years
because feedback from participants
and their parents
had been so good, Youth
Technology Coordinator
Beth Kerns said.
While many of the participants
are too young to
fully grasp the sacrifices
made by members of the
military, Kerns believes
that many of them “get it.”
She said Glenview reveres
veterans and the military,
in part, because of the village’s
culture and past.
Personally, Kerns sees
great value in honoring veterans,
especially those who
are sick or disabled.
“I think it’s important to
say to the veterans there
that we care and that we
thank them,” Kerns said.
“We’re thinking of them.
They’re not forgotten.”
THE LAKE FOREST LEADER
UPDATE: Murder-suicide witness
hit shooter with car
The shooter in a Jan. 3 murdersuicide
in Lake Forest was struck
by a vehicle after killing his exgirlfriend
and himself in the parking
lot of the apartment the former
couple once shared, according to
new information from the Lake
Forest Police Department.
Further investigation into the
shooting revealed that a third
party, a U.S. Navy member, coworker
of VanLandingham’s and
Highland Park resident, witnessed
the incident and, out of fear for
his life, drove his Land Rover
into the shooter, Ryan Zike, 33,
just after Zike shot himself in the
head, according to a press release
from the LFPD.
The witness is a 37-year-old
man who arrived at VanLandingham’s
apartment in the 200 block
of E. Deerpath Road on the morning
of Jan. 3 to drive her to work.
The release also reveals that
Zike, of Louisville, Ky., and Van-
Landingham lived together for
a period of time in VanLandingham’s
apartment.
In October of 2017, Zike
moved out of VanLandingham’s
apartment and moved back in
with his family in Louisville.
Zike, who allegedly shot Van-
Landingham, 27, multiple times
in the incident, reportedly drove
to Illinois and stayed overnight at
an unknown location on Jan. 2.
in the 2000 block of Washington
was taken to the hospital with
non-life-threatening injuries.
After further investigation and
Volunteers clean up forest preserve on MLK Day
Jeremy Turley
Freelance Reporter
On Feb. 4, 1968, Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. delivered
his famed Drum
Major Instinct sermon from
the pulpit of Ebenezer Baptist
Church in Atlanta. The
sermon is remembered by
history as the one in which
King predicted his death
and envisioned his own funeral
service.
“If any of you are around
when I have to meet my
day, I don’t want a long funeral.
And if you get somebody
to deliver the eulogy,
tell them not to talk too
long. And every now and
then, I wonder what I want
them to say,” King said.
“I’d like somebody to mention
that day that Martin
Luther King Jr. tried to give
his life serving others.”
Two months later, King
was shot on the balcony of
room 306 at the Lorraine
Motel in Memphis. He
died later that night.
Now nearly half a century
removed from his
assassination, the country
continues to honor King’s
legacy by trying to remember
him how he wanted to
be remembered. Every
year on King’s birthday,
millions of Americans
congregate at food banks,
homeless shelters and
community centers to perform
acts of service for
others.
More than 40 volunteers
in Glenview tried to
do their part by ridding a
section of the Blue Star
Memorial Woods of invasive
species on Martin Luther
King Jr. Day, Jan. 15.
Armed with pruners and
bow saws, the volunteers
Mary Fran Cashman enjoys a treat.
descended upon the forest
preserve to cut down and
burn buckthorn.
Glenview resident Buffy
Sallee lives just a few minutes
away from the forest
preserve and frequently
walks on the adjacent trail.
She thought bringing her
kids along on the volunteering
trip would teach
them to contribute to the
betterment of their surroundings.
“I think on any day, [doing
community service] is
good. It’s something that I
didn’t grow up doing with
my family, but that I’m
trying to do with my kids,”
Sallee said. “This trail is
the one we go on as a family.
This is them getting to
actually be a part of making
what we use.”
Over the last 200 years,
European buckthorn
has invaded woodlands
throughout the country and
prevented native tree species
from flourishing.
John Balaban has volunteered
with the North
Branch Restoration Project
for nearly 35 years.
Over that time, he has
expelled buckthorn from
hundreds of acres of forest
along the Chicago River.
While Balaban would
have been out in the woods
irrespective of the holiday,
he said he’s heartened by
the other volunteers’ eagerness
to heed King’s
message and serve the
community.
“I think [service] is the
legacy of Martin Luther
King,” Balaban said. “It’s
more than just thinking
good thoughts or whatever,
but it’s actually going
out and doing something
to make the world a better
place.”
Meghan Cashman said
she subscribed to that way
of thinking and decided
to use her day off to participate
in the national Day
of Service. Along with
her husband, David, and
their two young daughters,
Cashman spent several
hours working in the forest
preserve.
Cashman said she was
inspired by then-President
Barack Obama’s call to
service on King’s birthday
in previous years and
always wanted to volunteer.
Now that her youngest
daughter, Sarah, 5, is
old enough to participate,
Cashman saw the perfect
opportunity to make the
day a family affair.
“We felt compelled to
come out and do something,”
Cashman said.
“[Martin Luther King Jr.]
did his part, and we’re going
to do our part, too.”
Event organizer Annette
Anderson, of Friends of
the Chicago River, echoed
Cashman’s sentiment, saying
that King’s message is
so powerful, even 50 years
after his death, because it
promotes community involvement
as an agent of
change in society.
“Martin Luther King
Day observance, for me,
is just showing that everybody
can help and that
all hands make a difference,”
Anderson said. “His
movement wouldn’t have
happened without everyday
people. That’s how
change happens.”

Avoca West launches first elementary school Best Buddies chapter in state
SUBMITTED BY AVOCA WEST
SCHOOL
The Avoca West School
community is thrilled
to collaborate with Best
Buddies to launch the
first and only elementary
school chapter in
Illinois.
Best Buddies is an international
nonprofit organization
that advocates
for individuals with intellectual
and developmental
disabilities through school
friendship, job integration
and leadership development.
Best Buddies is
built upon a simple message
of inclusion.
With an increasing need
to educate children on the
value of humanity in all
forms and impress upon
them the importance of
relationships, it was a
natural fit to couple elementary
aged children
with Best Buddies. The
elementary program focuses
on building awareness
of the program and
bringing students together
through student-led fundraising
events, club meetings
and other engaging
activities.
So far, Avoca has 25
student participants, who
have met on various occasions
to work toward
the first community event,
which was held on Dec.
15.
“The scope of the event
was first limited to club
participants and their
families, but grew to include
the entire school,”
said Caroline Henson,
an Avoca staff coordinator.
“We really wanted to
reach as many people as
possible.”
Families were invited
to enjoy a potluck
meal, games and crafts,
and decorate the school
halls to spread holiday
cheer and to help raise
funds for Best Buddies
through a bake sale. The
event was attended by
about 50 people, who
gained a new perspective
on acceptance and
friendship.
“You get to start new
friendships with other
people — people you
wouldn’t normally get to
be friends with,” said student
Romy Parekh.
Adventures in Glenview
Nanook of the North Glen
Denny Hebson
Contributing Columnist
Glenview resident
going to
explore the North
“I’m
Glen,” I announced.
“The North Glen?”
my wife asked. “What
the heck is in the North
Glen?”
And that’s the point.
Once you go north of
Kohl’s Children’s Museum,
what is there?
Canada?
So, on a cold, snowy,
blustery MLK holiday, I
set off to find out.
I started my journey
at the north end of Lake
Glenview. Cold. Frozen.
Windswept. And yet,
surprisingly, the jogging
path was plowed. Perhaps
the wild, untamed North
was more civilized than I
thought.
I moved on through a
tight cluster of tall homes,
down the cruelly named
Sundrop Lane.
There was not a drop of
sun in the sky.
I turned left on Mint
Lane. I thought about the
people who live on Mint.
Their breath must be
spectacular.
There are a lot of odd
names in the North Glen.
I passed a long, pretty
building with a sign that
said “CHEST.” I looked
across the street, half
expecting to see another
building called “ANKLE.”
And then there is the
preschool called Crème de
la Crème, potentially the
worst name for a school
I’ve ever seen. Why not
just call it Arrogant Little
Snots? I’m sure it’s a fine
school, but they definitely
aren’t teaching the art of
subtlety. The fact that the
parking lot exit sign is
in French makes it even
worse.
I made my way along
Compass Road, through a
frozen tundra of medical
offices. I came upon what
used to be the headquarters
of Family Video, the
last video store chain in
the known universe. But
the name is no more. Now
the sign reads Highland
Ventures. Later, I learned
this is the parent company
of not only Family Video,
but also Acme Rotary
Phones and National
Buggy Whips.
I passed the headquarters
of other companies
that I was vaguely familiar
with. Anixter, who does
something. Mead Johnson,
Don’t just
list your
real estate
property...
who does something else.
I made my way over to
the icy asphalt of Shermer
Road. Undaunted, I drove
up Dauntless Road, past
rows of tidy military family
homes, reminders of
what The Glen used to be.
And then I saw it. A
gate blocking access to a
tiny side street.
“REMOTE CON-
TROLLED GATE” the
sign read. This was it.
The cool secret hidden
in Glenview that I would
expose to the world. I got
out of my car and walked
past the gate. But instead
of Glenview’s version of
Area 51, all I found were
the nice new homes of the
Westgate development.
It was a gate designed to
stop cut-through traffic,
though I didn’t see any
traffic at all.
My last stop was the
Kent Fuller Prairie. I got
a tick on my leg here last
summer, but figured I was
pretty safe on this cold,
snowy, late afternoon.
I looked over the swaying
dormant grasses as
the sun set and the wind
picked up. I wondered if
there were coyotes.
I decided it was time to
go home.
CHRIS PULLAM
chris@glenviewlantern.com
A
few weeks ago, we
published our Year
In Review issue,
an annual opportunity for
the leaders of Glenview’s
many, many, many organizations
to speak directly to
their beneficiaries.
While most of the
submissions focus on
the ways each organization
supports the village,
my favorite part of the
issue revolves around the
fundraising events often
announced in each piece.
Let’s face it — January,
and even most of February,
is boring. I’ve said it
once and I’ll say it again:
warm weather reigns
supreme when it comes to
community events.
And the biggest and
best community events
tends to support our most
important community
organizations.
The good news? Many
of these organizations
are too excited for their
first fundraiser to wait for
warm weather, giving us
a sneak peak of what to
expect the rest of the year.
Case in point: This
weekend, on Saturday,
Jan. 27, Youth Services
will throw its annual
Firefighter Chili Cook-Off
and Trivia Night from 5-9
p.m. at Chicago Harley-
Davidson, 2929 Patriot
Boulevard in Glenview.
The title says it all,
folks. If you enjoy chili
and trivia, this event is
for you. Personally, if you
don’t mind a little editorializing
in my weekly
editorial, it’s one of my
favorite events of the year.
But it’s about more than
good food and good vibes.
It’s about supporting a great
organization that supports
the most at-risk individuals
in our community.
And it’s about preventing
the Wilmette, Northfield
and Northbrook fire departments
from leaving town
with a win on our turf.
Glenview musicians star at North Shore Jazz Fest
Alexa Burnell
Freelance Reporter
Glenbrook South transformed
into a musiclover’s
haven on Saturday,
Jan. 20, during the
41st annual all-day North
Shore Jazz Fest, where
more than 80 Chicagoarea
middle- and highschool
ensembles performed
for top honors and
the chance to learn from
experienced pros.
GBS Band Director
Aaron Wojcik explained
that the event has withstood
the test of time because
of the dedication
from the student leadership
board and the parent-run
Glenbrook South
Instrumental League,
whose members pour
their hearts and souls into
making the festival stand
up to its reputation of
excellence.
“The [instrumental
league] does so much for
our music department,”
Wojcik said. “They assist
with fundraising and even
help provide instruments
for kids whose families
may not have the financial
means. Because of them,
events like Jazz Fest are
not only possible, but incredibly
well-run and organized.”
Michelle Cummings,
president of the instrumental
league, and Laura
Heyser, its chairwoman,
said the festival is unique
because of its positive
ripple effect on all those
involved.
“Jazz Fest is a fundraiser,
helping us maintain
musical programing
throughout the year,”
Cummings said. “The fest
itself is also a tradition unlike
any other. There are
not a lot of opportunity
for youth musicians in the
Chicago area to perform
jazz, so this is a unique
experience where jazz
experts give constructive
feedback, allowing young
musicians to get tips from
some of the best in the
businesses.”
According to Heyser,
the festival also attracts
a large number of volunteers,
who embrace their
roles.
“In addition to about
200 student workers at
Jazz Fest, we have about
300 parent volunteer shifts
that need to be filled on the
day of the event, in addition
to the team that works
for months on the planning
and preparations,”
Heyser said. “Some of our
parent volunteers are band
parent alumni who return
year after year, continuing
to support Jazz Fest and
the GBS band programs.
So many parent volunteers
offer to stay for extra
shifts to help out; we
never have to worry about
being short-handed.”
On the morning of the
big event, GBS quickly
filled with young adults
eager to showcase their
talent with the hopes of
bettering themselves and
possibly earning recognition
along the way. Highschool
student guides accompanied
bands to their
assigned room, where
each ensemble had 25
minutes to prepare and
perform in front of professionals
such as Dr.
Travis Heath, chairperson
of the music department
and associate professor of
trumpet at Northeastern
Illinois University, and
Paul Wertico, seven-time
Grammy award-winning
drummer, to name a few.
Clinicians judged
on the following criteria:
blend, intonation,
balance, rhythm, precision,
dynamics, interpretations,
arrangements,
presentation and
improvisation.
Judges such as Bob
Lark, who is recognized
regionally, nationally
and internationally as a
contemporary jazz educator
and well-known
trumpet player, awarded
top-performing musicians
with multiple prizes,
including a four-year
scholarship to Roosevelt
University.
Throughout the day,
ensembles took a break,
only to be entertained by
professionals, such as
Reggie Thomas and the
Midwest Young Artists
Jazz Combo, The Prospect
Jazz Band under the
direction of Peter Weber,
and Bob Lark and his
Alumni Band.
While the day of magical
music-making put a
smile on Wojcik’s face,
nothing could have made
him more pleased than
watching his own GBS
student leaders make the
day run smoothly and professionally.
“What warms my heart
most is the wonderful
leadership displayed by
our own students here today,”
Wojcik said. “They
have this down to a science
and watching them
step up to guide visitors
through the building to
their respective rooms,
handle obstacles without
reaching out to an adult,
and make the experience
memorable for all who
participated is handsdown
what I am most
proud of.”
‘The Shape of Water’ blends monsters, love
Kathy Clemens
Contributing Columnist
Glenview resident
Guillermo del Toro is
well known for his dramatic
storytelling, beautifully
shot scene sequences
and slightly off-kilter
imagining when unfolding
his tales, which include the
critically acclaimed “Pan’s
Labyrinth.”
His work often features
the darker elements of fantasy
and fairy tales, which
are embodied in his newest
film, “The Shape of
Water,” in the love story
between a mute cleaning
woman and the captive
aquarian creature who captures
her heart.
Sally Hawkins is not the
typical ingénue cast as the
heroine in a romantic setting,
but she’s perfect for
the role of Eliza Esposito.
Her expressive features
clearly convey every ounce
of emotion that she’s feeling
at any given moment,
which in this case is a necessity
because she cannot
speak and relies on signing,
body language and
facial expressions to communicate
her thoughts.
Also placed in a role
that requires communication
without words, Doug
Jones somehow manages
to give his “sea monster”
the means to express his
own thoughts despite being
buried in costume, latex
and CGI effects. A tilt
of his head or a gentle fan
of his hands is enough, and
it’s an impressive piece
of acting. The interaction
between these two is
wonderfully played and
superbly directed.
A lovely turn by Richard
Jenkins as Giles, Eliza’s
artist neighbor feeling his
way as a gay man during
his later years, provides
depth and warmth that
make his character visceral
and honest.
Michael Shannon heads
the other way in his portrayal
of Strickland, the
brutal head of security who
holds the creature captive
so it can be studied. While
Shannon has an impressive
string of evil antagonists
on his resume, they are
always nuanced and different,
and this dead-eyed,
candy-eating, racist thug
resonates particularly well.
Octavia Spencer, as fellow
cleaning staff member
Zelda, talks enough
to make up for the nonspeaking
roles, and as an
integral part of the plotline,
she is always fun to
watch on screen.
All of these players are
lonely outsiders in some
way, cast aside by the
changing tides of society
and desperately trying to
find a connection, be it
human or otherwise. The
isolation is displayed carefully,
from Eliza’s solo
bus rides during the night
to Giles’ melancholy trips
to a pie shop to adore his
counterboy crush from
afar.
Even surrounded by his
wife and two children,
Strickland is very much
alone, his one-sided crusade
blinding him to those
around him.
Del Toro is meticulous in
his set direction, and was
very specific about the details
in this film, which he
purposefully set in 1962 to
embrace the social upheaval
that was looming, from
the civil rights movement to
the onset of technological
advancements. The clothing,
the cars, the television
programming — every item
in each scene contributes to
this overall sense.
Especially intuitive are
the music selections, as
Giles’ fondness for movie
musicals provides the
soundtrack for the interaction
between the characters
and their eventual
courtship.
The decade was a time
that made great progress,
but also a time of great
divisiveness — much is
made “us” versus “them.”
The characteristics and
qualities of individuals define
who they are, and as it
turns out, the humans are
usually more monstrous
than the monster.
In the late 1990s, enthusiasm
for bacon seemed to
hit a fever pitch here in the
United States. Now, years
later, it doesn’t appear that
what some have coined
“bacon mania” is slowing
down anytime soon.
Bacon is so popular that
it even has its own day on
Dec. 30. While some argue
for or against the health
merits of the salt-cured
pork, few outright dislike
the taste. Even vegetarians
get in on the fun by adding
meatless bacon knockoffs
to the diet.
Finding ways to slip
bacon into every dish is a
challenge many chefs are
more than willing to take
on. Last week, 22nd Century
Media editors ventured
out to different North
Shore establishments to get
their bacon fill and taste
some unique creations. The
results were delicious.
GH loaded tots —
Glenview House, Glenview
Bacon has long been
considered its own food
group, at least by people
in the know, nestled just
above deep-fried pickles
and right below pork belly.
As such, it has carved
quite a unique niche for
itself, capable of complementing
pancakes, dates
or sirloin, or anchoring the
classic BLT sandwich. It’s
basically a modern-day onion,
sans the tears — unless
you’re crying from happiness.
Walk into any restaurant
in Glenview, and I’m
sure you’ll find a handful of
bacon-centric menu items.
Yet, none do bacon better
than Glenview House,
1843 Glenview Road.
When I visited the longtime
North Shore staple,
I immediately keyed on
the GH loaded tots ($10),
complete with tater tots,
jalapeno, nacho cheese,
roasted peppers, over-easy
eggs, Tabasco and chive
sour cream — oh yeah, and
plenty of bacon.
The dish was delicious,
and while the bacon added
a much appreciated level of
tastiness, I’d order it again
even if meats vanished
from the menu. The cheese,
egg, Tabasco and sour
cream soaked into the potatoes
at the bottom of the
bowl, and the peppers and
jalapeno provided a nice
kick. Other bacon-infused
menu items include the GH
potato skins ($10), chopped
salad ($10), roast turkey
salad ($10), habanero ham
melt ($11) and roasted turkey
sandwich ($10).
Glenview House is open
10 Questions
with Sean Cloherty
The Loyola wrestler is
one win away from the alltime
school record.
What’s one item on
your bucket list?
I’d really like to skydive.
If you could travel
anywhere in the
world, where would it
be and why?
Australia because I want
to see all the different animals.
What’s one thing
people don’t know
about you?
I was a competitive
gymnast before I started
to wrestle. I did that until
seventh grade.
What’s the best
coaching advice you’ve
gotten?
Never be content with
second place.
If you could play
another sport, what
would it be and why?
Hockey because it’s so
intense. It’s high intensity,
similar to wrestling.
If you could have one
superpower, what
would it be?
To fly.
What’s your favorite
restaurant?
Cheesecake Factory.
I get the grilled chicken
sandwich.
If you could have
dinner with three
people, who would
they be and why?
One would be Yoda because
I love Star Wars.
Second, someone like Einstein
because I love physics
and I know so much
about him. Also, probably
Dan Gable, one of the best
wrestlers in the world.
What’s the best part
about being a Loyola
athlete?
The team community
because everyone on the
team is my best friend.
What’s been your
favorite moment at
Loyola?
Sophomore year when
I broke the varsity pin record.
That was the greatest
feeling I’ve had. The
old record was 23 pins in a
single season and I got 26.
Coach Talk
Titans poms ready for
Orlando, championship
Jon ‘Coach’ Cohn
Contributing Columnist
Glenview Resident
Timing is everything,
they say.
That certainly
would be true of longtime
Glenbrook South Titan
Poms coach Julie Smith,
who drills her girls on
the precision and timing
it takes to excel in highly
competitive pom competitions.
But her own timing,
on a more personal level,
certainly could have been
better. Baby No. 3 for the
Smith family is due — in
fact, as you’re reading
this, he/she could have
arrived.
The only problem?
The Poms big annual
trip to Orlando for
national championship
competition is this coming
week.
That’s a problem.
Smith, as head coach
of the squad, has led this
highlight trip for the past
14 years. It is something
she always looks forward
to. But this year, the
streak, shall we say, is in
jeopardy.
“I have already been
Googling earliest times
you can take a baby on
a plane” coach laughed,
refusing to give in just yet
to the 14-year streak.
“I am still hoping to
find a way to go,” she
added.
If she can’t make it,
don’t worry. The team will
be in the more than capable
hands of junior varsity
coach Dayna Parenti, who
knows the girls well after
coaching them the past
four years.
But don’t count out
coach just yet. As the old
expression goes “where
there’s a will, there’s a
way.”
Now let’s talk the
sport of poms here. I
have always admired the
entertainment value and
athleticism of the girls,
performing their routines
at various sporting events;
however, talking to Coach
Julie, I was given a real
primer on this sport. Call
it Pom education class 101.
Here is some of what I
learned.
The sport is not just
showl; it is really competitive.
While respecting
their opponents routines
and even admiring the
really good ones, they
still want to beat their
competition just as much
as a football, soccer, or
basketball team does.
The dedication required
is extraordinary. The girls
work out almost year
round in preparation for
events, competitions and
the commitment is equivalent
or greater than any
other sport.
Making the team is
not easy. Large numbers
of girls try out and only
the top performers are
selected. hey keep a
squad of 24 on the varsity
and 22 on junior varsity.
The gaining popularity of
the sport is a testament to
Smith and her high school
athletes who make it a
point to go out into the
community and promote
their program.
The trip to Orlando is
the highlight of the year.
Much of their hard work
comes to fruition under
the sunny skies of Florida.
This trip, though, is not
about just fun and games.
“We go there to compete,”
Smith said. “The
first few years we kind of
looked at it as recreation,
but now the girls view it
as a business trip.”
OK, I guess not a lot of
wandering around Disney
World slapping high fives
with Mickey and Donald
(the duck, not the president).
Nope, it is all about
practice and presentation.
The goal for our Titan
girls is to make the finals.
Twelve teams typically
make it and last year the
Titan Poms achieved just
that. First time in a few
years, and they hope to
repeat again.
If they really excel, the
final few teams are televised
on ESPN, so keep
an eye out.
What a great way to
start the month of February
it would be: a new
baby, and a shiny new
trophy.
Good luck ladies and
don’t forget to wear your
sunscreen.
Might Want To Know,” available
Wrestling
Titans tune up for postseason
against rivals at CSL tourney
Todd Marver, Freelance Reporter
Glenbrook South, New Trier, Glenbrook
North, Highland Park wrestling
tuned up for the postseason, at the
Central Suburban League conference
tournament.
With regionals quickly looming and
a start date of Feb. 3, area wrestling
teams honed their skill Saturday, Jan.
20, at Maine West in the conference
tournament.
Unlike New Trier, Highland Park
and Glenbrook North, no Glenbrook
South wrestlers placed first or second
in the conference tournament. The
young Titans placed 10th at the 12-
team tournament with a score of 45.
Glenbrook South’s top finishers were
three sophomores: Matt Rubel (21-
13) with a fourth-place finish in the
106-pound weight class, Nate Sullivan
(3-5) with a sixth-place finish in
the 113-pound weight class and Cam
Mercer (26-11) with a fifth-place finish
in the 195-pound weight class.
“Obviously, we’re happy with successes
we had, but losses and adversity
we had, we’ll get back to work right
off the bat,” Rubel said. “We’ll be in
there on Monday working on anything
we didn’t perform well on.”
New Trier placed the highest of the
four CSL schools in the 22nd Century
Media coverage area with a thirdplace
score of 222.5. New Trier senior
Patrick Ryan, took home the title in
the 145-point weight class and remained
undefeated with a 38-0 record.
He was also presented with the Elias
George Outstanding Wrestler award at
the end of the event.
Glenbrook
South’s Jesse
Quijada takes
down Glenbrook
North’s Trent
Williams, who
won in the
220-pound
weight class,
on Saturday,
Jan. 20, in Des
Plaines. Tracy
Allen/22nd
Century Media
“It’s an honor that the coaches voted
me recognizing the hard work our
team has put in this year,” Ryan said.
“I’m super glad to have partners in the
wrestling room who coach me to get
better like Jack Tangen, Bayne Kiser
and Russell Sanchez because without
good practice partners it’s really hard
to improve individually, so I’m just
really glad that I’ve got those guys to
push me every day.”
Ryan defeated Highland Park senior
Alex Rosenbloom (25-2) in the championship
match on a 7-3 decision.
“I was expecting a competitive
match in the finals,” Ryan said. “I
think the difference was my conditioning
during the match. As far as
something that I can work on, I really
think that my takedown finishes could
be cleaner. Just working on my technique.
I need to improve riding guys
in the top position and just trying to
get all those things right for regionals
in a couple weeks.”
Ryan looks to keep his personal and
team success going deep in the postseason.
Ryan competed at state the
past two years.
“The goal is to stay undefeated
and win a state title,” he said. “In the
long term as a team, we want to win
the team regional. I would say we’re
an underdog right now, but in our
wrestling room we have the mentality
that we should be hanging in there
with those teams. We’re just going to
wrestle hard and see how it goes out.
Hopefully we go out with a regional
title and I hope to be able to end my
career with a state title.”
Alumni Spotlight
Loyola grad earns Big Ten scholarship
Michael Wojtychiw
Contributing Sports Editor
To play a college sport is an
amazing feat in itself. But to
have the opportunity to play a
sport at a Power 5 conference
school, that’s the dream for
many high school athletes.
Three years ago, Loyola
football player Bobby Walker
got that opportunity when he
was offered a walk-on spot
at the University of Illinois at
Champaign-Urbana.
A lot of it had to do with
[Loyola] coach [John] Holocek,”
Walker said. “He’s a U
of I grad and kind of pointed
me in that direction because I
didn’t have a whole lot of options.
He said ‘I could probably
help you out with a walkon
spot, I’ll see if I can but no
promises.’ He ended up getting
me there and I was lucky
enough to work hard and do
what I do.”
That hard work paid off for
Walker, as he was awarded a
football scholarship by Illinois
coach Lovie Smith on Christmas
Day.
“I didn’t really know why
he was calling,” Walker said.
“I was kind of nervous and
then when I started to realize
what he was starting to say, I
freaked out, ran downstairs,
was kind of jumping around
and told my parents and they
were like ‘oh my god.’ It was
kind of really awesome.”
With Walker knowing the
Illini had a couple open scholarships,
he was prepared to
talk to the coaching staff about
the possibility on being put on
scholarship when he got back
from winter break, but he ended
up not having to do that.
The 2017 season was a
memorable one for the redshirt
sophomore. Not only did he
land a scholarship, he earned
his first start and had his first
catch, against Nebraska.
“We had just had a film
meeting and I was kind of
Loyola graduate and current University of Illinois football
player Bobby Walker in action against Wisconsin on Oct. 28
in Champaign. Photo Submitted
upset because I thought we
didn’t play well,” Walker said.
“One of my coaches realized
I wasn’t very happy and he
said ‘I know you’re not really
pleased with how you’re playing
and I think we can give
you a shot.’ I was like ‘alright,
let’s go.’ I had to make the
most of it because this could
be a chance to prove that I
should be on scholarship.
“I came in relief in the Nebraska
game and was in two
tight end sets against Iowa. I
had been getting a bunch of
time on special teams. When
we played at Indiana, a couple
weeks later, when we played
Indiana at home that’s when i
got the start at the Y position.”
For Walker, the transition to
playing in college wasn’t as
difficult as it may be for some
other players, and that’s due to
his time playing for Holocek.
“Part of it was different because
of the level of play. It’s
always a different level because
they’re bigger, stronger,
faster,” Walker added. “But it
terms of scheduling or how
practice was run, that was the
same way Loyola does stuff.
Coach Holecek makes sure we
work out in the summer, work
out during the week and then
also film meeting and stuff. It
was a little bit more but it was
very similar.”
Walker sees himself as more
of a blocking tight end and has
seen himself improve in his
three years at Illinois.
“In the weight room, I’ve
gotten stronger, I’ve gotten
faster,” Walker said. “But I
feel like I’ve worked on becoming
a better football player
in general, mainly blocking
for me because that’s the stuff
I do. Just really working on
little details, getting down and
getting good leverage, playing
against guys that are bigger
than me.”
Despite two tight ends graduating
from this year’s team,
Walker shows that there will
be plenty of competition at his
position as the Illini return a
redshirt freshman, a true freshman
who saw a lot of playing
time and also an incoming
freshmen.
But Walker isn’t worried
about that because he knows
what he needs to do to earn his
shot.
“I want to solidify that I’m
a player in the Big Ten. I want
to do some big things, solidify
that I deserve to catch more
passes, play more snaps,” he
said. “To do that, I think I need
to get a little bigger, which is
definitely doable, and just help
our team win. We’ve had some
struggles but it’s time to push
that rock and break through it.”

Boys Basketball
Titans can’t finish against Wildkits
David Jaffe
Freelance Reporter
Glenbrook South has
had close contests with a
chance at winning in almost
all of its Central Suburban
League South games
so far.
That continued Friday,
Jan. 19, against a visiting
Evanston team that a week
earlier had defeated New
Trier.
The Titans (6-11, 0-6)
twice came back from nine
points down to send the
game into overtime. But
ultimately they couldn’t do
enough in the extra session,
falling to the Wildkits 60-
58.
“With the effort we
played with, it was deserving
of a better outcome,”
GBS coach Phil Ralston
said. “We’re playing hard
and doing all the right
things. We just have had
trouble closing games out.”
Evanston got off to a fast
start in overtime going up
56-51 on a Lance Jones layup
and Blake Peters three.
Stevon Boyd cut the deficit
to 56-53 with a layup with
1:45 left but Jaheim Holden
buried two free throws getting
it back up to five with
18 seconds left. Dom Martinelli
knocked down a pair at
the line with 9.4 left but Peters
sealed it with two foul
shots of his own, making it
60-55. Mac Hubbard hit a
three as the clock expired.
GBS trailed 38-29 in the
third but battled back with
a 16-7 run to tie it at 45-45
with just over three minutes
left in the game. Martinelli
had two three-point plays
during that stretch while
Gavin Morse had four
along with layups by Hubbard,
Boyd and Dashka
Anard. Then trailing 49-47,
GBS took its only lead on
a three by Hubbard with
Glenbrook South’s Gavin Morse drives to the basket
against Evanston defenders on Friday, Jan. 19, in
Glenview. David Kraus/22nd Century Media
49 seconds left but Holden
went right down the court
and answered making it 51-
50 with 34 seconds left.
“We defended well all
game but after we took the
lead, we had a letdown defensively
the next play,”
Ralston said. “We let him
get right into the middle of
the floor. It wasn’t the type
of defense we had been
playing.”
GBS had a chance to
win in regulation but Martinelli
split at the line with
6.7 seconds left ultimately
sending the game to overtime.
Evanston jumped out to
an early 12-3 advantage but
GBS cut it to 22-20 thanks
to 8 points from Martinelli,
6 from Jimmy McMahon
and 4 from Morse. After
the Wildkits were initially
successful trapping the Titans,
GBS adjusted and was
effective getting to the rim,
scoring 34 points in the
paint.
“Coach told us they’re
not as good on help defense,”
Martinelli (19
points) said. “So he told me
and Gavin to keep attacking
the basket. They’re a
great offensive team so we
knew we needed to score a
lot. I was able to get open
looks off of screens. I was
trying to do what I could to
help my team win.”
“Evanston does a good
job pressuring the perimeter,”
Ralston said. “I told
them if you have an advantage,
you have to make
them pay for it. We didn’t
get the ball inside in the
first half. But we were
much better doing that in
the second half. The plays
we ran weren’t always the
way it was scripted. But I
was very happy with our
shot selection and can’t
complain about what we
did offensively.”
It’s clear GBS is very
close to turning the corner
and no matter what deficit
they’re facing, they keep
playing hard.
“No matter what the
score is, we keep battling,”
Martinelli said. “We never
get too high or too low. We
know we can compete with
good teams. That’s the type
of team we are.”
“We had a very good
fourth quarter. We’re still
learning but we’re competing
at an extremely high
level,” Ralston said “I think
we did about as good a job
defending their top kid as
anyone has. The effort is
always there and there’s
going to be a breakthrough
with this team.”
McMahon added 11
while Morse had 10, Hubbard
had 8 and Boyd and
Will King each had 4.
Glenbrook pleased with win over Scouts
Gary Larsen
Freelance Reporter
It’s not common for both
teams to skate away happy
after a 4-1 hockey game,
but Glenbrook and Lake
Forest managed the feat.
Glenbrook was pleased
with its solid play throughout
its win at the Northbrook
Sports Center on
Saturday, Jan. 20, especially
after a choppy performance
one day prior in a
loss to Naper Valley.
“We had a tough night
last night in Naperville.
They took it to us,” Glenbrook
coach Steve Hamelin
said. “Tonight, it was
hard work, we played as
a team and kept it simple,
and were very disciplined.
We won the foot battles and
kept the pressure on.”
The offensive star for
Glenbrook was stalwart
senior defenseman Koby
Wilcox, who scored the
first and fourth goals in
the win. Chloe Carroll and
Alicia Kim scored the other
two goals for Glenbrook.
Kim liked the way her
side bounced back after the
loss to Naper Valley.
“We had opportunities
in that game but at times
we weren’t communicating,
and that’s what broke
our defense down,” Kim
said. “But not tonight. And
I think we have a good
chance to win it all if we
keep progressing the way
we have been.”
Lake Forest was happy
with its effort against defending
state champion
Glenbrook, especially since
Scouts defenseman Hannah
Matthews was forced
to play in net with starting
goalie Amanda Peter absent
due to injury.
Matthews is a defenseman
whose experience
in net consisted of one
the spring of 2017 and
one practice leading up to
Saturday’s game. She borrowed
goalie equipment
from her younger sister
Sarah, an eighth-grader
who plays goalie for the
Falcons U14 team.
Matthews made 24 saves
on Saturday and wasn’t
particularly nervous heading
into the game.
“It was fun and I was
super excited,” she said.
“The hard part was just trying
to figure out the different
muscle movements. I
watched (Sarah) play yesterday
and I was watching
the other goalie, too.”
Lake Forest coach Liz
Zorn was grateful for the
effort that Matthews gave
her.
“She volunteered and
jumped right in. She was
awesome,” Zorn said. “We
had a good game. Our defense
played well, our offense
was getting shots
off, and we played with
energy.”
Matthews appreciated
the effort that defensemen
Annika Sornson, Jessica
Krug, Sarah Newtown, and
Abby Benjamin put forth in
front of her.
“They blocked a lot
of shots for me and they
cleaned the puck pretty efficiently,
so that was really
helpful,” Matthews said.
“I thought as a team we
played really well.”
Lake Forest led 1-0 in
the first period on a Kennedy
Stein goal but Wilcox
tied the game on an assist
from Carroll.
Kim attacked the net
from the right side and finished
with a backhand shot
in the second period, and
three minutes later it was
Kim’s rush up the ice and
shot on net that allowed
Carroll to bury the rebound
to give Glenbrook a 3-1
lead. Addie Carr also assisted
on Glenbrook’s third
goal.
Kim also defended hard
throughout the win in a
two-way effort that stood
out.
“(Kim’s) compete-level
is off the charts,” Hamelin
said. “She’s very coachable,
she has some tenacity
to her, and she wants to go
to the net. She’s using her
teammates well, too.
“Eleni (Tasiopoulos)
played really well, too. We
needed a good all-around
effort from everyone and
we got it, but I thought that
was probably the best game
I’ve seen Alicia play this
year.”

Road to the Olympics: Part 2
Hansen ready for return to Olympics
Michal Dwojak, Sports Editor
Brian Hansen is used to
taking long trips, but his
upcoming trip to the 2018
Winter Olympic Games
in South Korea is one he
wasn’t sure would happen.
The Olympic speed
skater left Sochi, Russia,
after the 2014 Winter
Games with more questions
than answers. He
knew what he wanted
to do, but Hansen didn’t
know whether the sport
he had competed in for
almost two decades would
be part of his future.
Now, four years later,
he’s ready to travel to his
third Olympic Games for
the sport he thought was
gone.
“I felt like I had a new
perspective and I wanted
to come back to the sport
to see it from a different
perspective than I had in
the past,” Hansen said.
“In the past, I wanted to
really enjoy the process
and see and try to be really
grateful for every day
of training, and make it
as exciting as it can be.
That’s what I set out to do
with my comeback.”
The road back started
two years after he skated
off the rink in Sochi. Hansen
finish his degree at the
University of Colorado,
Boulder, and started to
prepare for a life away
from speed skating.
But there was still time
to prepare with two years
left when he finished
school. Most of Team
USA felt the odds at the
Sochi Olympics weren’t
good and it proved to be
true. Hansen competed
strong and some considered
him the strongest
U.S. speed skater at those
Games, but he couldn’t
replicate the silver-medal
performance he had at the
2010 Vancouver Games.
His return wouldn’t be
easy.
Most skaters today
don’t take time away from
the sport because of how
difficult it is to return. But
if there was anyone who
could set an example of
how to do it, it was his
longtime coach Nancy
Swider-Peltz.
“People don’t do that
much anymore,” Swider-
Peltz said. “In this day
of age, people don’t take
the time off. If they do,
there’s not a good chance
of making it.”
Swider-Peltz had attempted
a few comebacks
herself during her Olympic
career. The four-time
Olympian knew the struggles
of leaving and coming
back, but that didn’t
stop her from being the
first U.S. athlete to compete
in four different Winter
Games.
So maybe he had the
exception to the rule.
But Hansen had what
Swider-Peltz considered
to be the essentials of
making such a return. He
had the fundamentals they
had worked on from when
they first started working
together at open skates in
Wheaton almost 17 years
ago. While the disco ball
filled the room, Swider-
Peltz helped Hansen
work on his rhythm while
skating with those who
wouldn’t share the same
fate on the ice.
The tools were there for
Glenview’s Road to
the Olympics
This is the second part
of a three-part series
leading up to the 2018
Winter Olympic Games.
Hansen, he just needed
the confidence.
“I don’t think it was a
difficult decision to make
or thing to do,” Swider-
Peltz said.
The comeback reached
it final stages in Milwaukee,
a city to which
Hansen and Swider-Peltz
had taken countless trips
together. The two made
the trip with one of Hansen’s
parents and Swider-
Peltz’s children multiple
times a week during his
skating career. The routine
had a rigid schedule:
Either John or Julie Hansen
would pick up Hansen
at 2:30 p.m. at Glenbrook
South with dinner
and snack prepared. They
would meet up with the
coach and make their way
to Wisconsin.
Hansen quizzed his
mother on songs, mostly
Red Hot Chili Pepper
songs, or they would
watch “Cool Runnings”
for what seemed like the
millionth time. Memories
that still live on.
But the U.S. Olympic
Trials in Milwaukee
from Jan. 2-7 was a different
trip and turned out
to be as fulfilling. Hansen
qualified for the first-ever
mass start in the Olympic
Games while also qualifying
in the 1,500-meter
race.
Yes, it’ll be his third
Games, but that doesn’t
Brian Hansen (middle) poses with his parents John and Julie Hansen after the U.S.
Olympic Trails in Milwaukee on Jan. 7. Photo Submitted
take away from its importance.
“It really is special,”
Julie Hansen said. “I enjoy
watching him skate.
You still get very nervous
because the trials are the
trials. I’m such a proud
mother for how he competes.”
Now, he enters the final
stages of preparation.
Swider-Peltz knows exactly
what these weeks are
like: plenty of accolades
and the media spotlight.
But that doesn’t mean
Hansen will change his
preparation. His practice
sessions with Swider-
Peltz will remain the
same; it’s just mental at
this point. Neither of the
two will talk much about
the Games, there’s no
point of adding pressure.
There just remains that
uncertainty he left Sochi
with. Hansen doesn’t
know what his next move
will be after he leaves Pyeongchang.
With his finished
degrees, he wants
to find a job, preferably in
the Milwaukee area.
One thing he does know
is he wants to give back
to the sport he loves by
coaching. There’s uncertainty
as to where that
might be, but he just wants
to give back. He joked
about maybe making the
reverse trip from Milwaukee
to Northbrook like he
used to in high school.
For now, he’ll have an
appreciation of a sport
he fell in love with at a
young age.
“You never know, you
just never know,” Hansen
said. “That’s what’s so difficult
about competing in
an Olympic sport: It’s every
four years and you have
to realize you can’t put all
the pressure on doing well
at the Olympics. This opportunity
only comes so
often. I try to go in with
an opportunity where it’s
not all about winning at the
Olympics. I can’t put that
pressure on myself.”
He can only take his
next certain trip, and
that’s to South Korea in
less than a month.
