PINBOARD Pinboard Spring time in Derby There’s plenty for families to enjoy during the Spring season and halfterm school holiday in and around Derby, many of which are listed in our What’s on Guide. Derby has over 50 play areas for children to enjoy some outdoor fun, and a walk in the park is a great way to keep fit whilst spending time with family and friends. The full timetable and further details of activities on offer can be found in the Family Fun Guide at inderby.org.uk/holidays. For the little ones, Derby Active is offering Springtots sessions at Springwood Leisure Centre to introduce pre-school children to gymnastics. Derbyshire County Council need loving and stable foster homes for Derbyshire children and they’re looking for caring people that can make a real difference to the life of a child in our care. Foster carers can be from all walks of life and backgrounds. Long-term and short-term foster homes are needed, ranging from single-night emergency stays to placements which can last for several years. Foster carers need to be over 21 and can be single, married, straight, gay or transgender, from any ethnic origin, working or not, renting or homeowners. County council carers receive weekly payments with additional allowances, get full training and on-going support from a dedicated social worker. Nine year old Aria who has been at Razzamataz Theatre School Derby for over 3 years auditioned with Top Talent Agency through Razzamataz and was accepted onto their books. Aria has said of the experience "It was a fantastic opportunity to work for a great charity, I loved working with actress Tosha who was so friendly and helpful in my first TV advert" Well done Aria! Some other dates for the diary… • 4 Feb World Cancer Day • 9 Feb National Pizza Day • 9-25 Feb Winter Olympics • 13 Feb Pancake Day • 16 Feb Chinese New Year • 17 Feb Random Acts of Kindness Day • 11 March Mother’s Day Derby Grammar School student wins top national prize Derby Grammar School student, Elliot Butterworth, has won a prestigious national prize which is open to 5,000 pupils at 440 schools across the country.Elliot travels to the House of Lords in February to receive the Independent Schools Association (ISA) Whitbread Memorial Prize 2017 from Lord Lexden, President of the ISA. The Prize recognises and celebrates outstanding involvement in, and service to, the wider aspect of school and community life; in conjunction with achieving academic excellence in GCSE results. Elliot achieved six A* and three 9 grades in his GCSEs in the summer of 2017. He also plays in the hockey and rugby teams, is a member of the Barbershop Choir and Swing Band, and has embarked on his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. In 2016 he achieved a Gold award in the British Physics Olympiad. Lesley Reynolds, Acting Head, congratulated Elliot on his achievement. She said: “We were overjoyed for Elliot when we received the news that he had won. He is friendly, engaging and trustworthy and an excellent role model to our younger pupils.” New Life on the Farm This February half term holiday, the National Forest Adventure Farm welcomes new life to the farm. You can meet baby animals including piglets, lambs and chicks. You can also help bottle feed cade lambs. There are 41 ewes in the Lambing Live tent waiting to give birth so you may be lucky enough to see a lamb being born. Inside Farmer Fogg needs your help to get his farm back in to shape. There’s a number of fun activities including making a scarecrow, planting seeds, mending the fences, rebuilding the tractor, test driving the remote control tractors and putting the eggs back together! The New Life and Help the Farmer activities are running between 17 and 25 February. www.adventurefarm.co.uk Primary Times FEBRUARY Issue 2018 | www.primarytimes.co.uk/derbyshire 'The Best That You Can Be − A Song For Derbyshire' Hundreds of schoolchildren from across Derbyshire are hoping a song they recorded together could storm the download charts, and raise money to support music education. 'The Best That You Can Be − A Song For Derbyshire', with lyrics by children giving a single motivational message, is sung by 1,700 pupils from 46 schools and three area music centres. The music was played by members of the Derbyshire City and County Youth Orchestra and Youth Wind Band, and the song is accompanied by a video filmed at 32 locations across the county and city, starring many of the pupils whose voices feature on the song.
