First Aid on the Curriculum
“After 10 years of campaigning by the
British Red Cross, it will be compulsory
for first aid skills to be taught in all
state schools in England from 2020.
It’s an impactful way to give young
people the confidence they need to
help someone.
As parents, Ben and I are so thrilled
our children will be able to learn these
important skills so that they never feel
completely helpless in an emergency
situation.
It’s also a relief knowing that if
anything were to happen to them in
the future, more people might be able
to help.
We support the British Red Cross’s
calls for it to become a compulsory
part of the curriculum throughout the
UK so all school children get the same
chance to learn how to save a life.”

Festival
6th – 22nd November
UK schools are once again being
offered the opportunity to attend
free cinema trips and access free
resources through the Into Film
Festival; the world’s largest free film
festival, and its many elements that
can be used across the curriculum.
With 3000 screenings and 200
special events, this year’s eclectic
programme offers something for 5 to
19-year-olds from all backgrounds
and corners of the UK. There will be
numerous special events targeted
towards Primary students including
40 simultaneous pupil premieres of
climate change documentary 2040
to launch the Festival, sing-along
screenings of The Greatest Showman
and many other collaborations with
UNICEF, UK Space Agency, Guide
Dogs UK, Anti-Bullying Alliance, Wee
Critters and Oxfam. Book online now

The theme for Anti-Bullying
Week 2019 is Change
Starts With Us’
Whether it is verbal, physical, online
or in-person, bullying has a significant
impact on a child’s life well in to
adulthood. The Anti-Bullying Alliance
is urging action for this year’s Anti-
Bullying Week and saying that by
making small, simple changes, we
can break this cycle and create a safe
environment for everyone.
Odd Socks Day will be held once again
to mark the first day of Anti-Bullying
Week. CBeebies star and Anti-Bullying
Alliance patron Andy Day and his
band Andy and the Odd Socks are
supporting Anti-Bullying Week 2019
and are encouraging students to wear
odd socks to school to celebrate what
makes us all unique.
National Adoption Week 2019 –
14th to 20th October 2019
As ever the campaign will aim to find
homes for those children who so
desperately need them.
Come along to one of our adoption
information events held across the
region if you want to find out more
about adoption. The East Midlands
currently has 68 children waiting to
be adopted and just 25 approved
adoptive families.
This means the need to find
adoptive parents is greater than
ever. Could you adopt? Why not
contact your local adoption agency
and find out more?
At the events you will learn more
“Once again Andy and the Odd Socks
are right behind Anti-Bullying Week.
On the first day of the campaign, we
are asking children to get creative
with their footwear on Odd Socks Day
and show they are celebrating what
makes us all unique. Look out for this
year’s toe tapping Change Starts With
Us song to help bring Odd Socks Day
to life.”

Have fun
and stay
safe this
fireworks
season
With Bonfire Night and Diwali
Celebrations just around the
corner, make sure your kids are
aware of the safety issues around
fireworks. Lots of guidance is
available on the Royal Society
for the Prevention of Accidents
(ROSPA) website, including
the full firework code
www.rospa.com.
Children must be supervised
around fireworks, enjoying them
from a safe distance. Organised
displays are always the safest
option, but if you are planning to
have a fireworks party at home,
make sure only adults deal with
setting up, lighting and disposing
of the fireworks after use. Remind
children never to return to a
firework once it has been lit, and
never to put fireworks in pockets
or to throw them.
Sparklers are great fun, but burns
from sparklers can be really
serious since they burn at fierce
temperatures. Make sure children
wear gloves when holding
sparklers, and that used sparklers
are put straight into a bucket of
cold water.
Hot drinks and fireworks parties
also tend to go hand in hand.
Check hot drinks are well out of
children’s reach and away from
the edges of tables and worktops
where they could be knocked
off. A child’s skin is much more
sensitive than an adult’s and a
hot drink can still scald a child 15
minutes after being made.

Anti-Bullying Week with…
Andy Day
Primary Times teams up with Andy Day to support Anti-Bullying Week which is
celebrated in over three quarters of schools across the country, 11 th - 15 th November
Andy Day is set to hit our screens in March
2020 with his new CBBC show Andy and the
Band, but the children’s TV star is also busy
playing a leading part in Anti-Bullying Week.
We tracked down the frontman of Andy
and the Odd Socks to find out why tackling
bullying is close to his heart.
When asked how he got involved in bullying
work, Andy explained “I wasn’t bullied at
school, but I saw others who were, and I’ve
seen the effects that bullying has had on
their personal growth into adulthood.
For some it has toughened them and for
many it has diminished their confidence
and potential”.
“It starts young”, he explains. “Having worked
in kid’s TV most of my career, when I got the
chance to be involved in Anti-Bullying week,
it just chimed with me”.
Andy Day has a children’s
band, ‘Andy and the
Odd Socks’, and
together they
came up with
a simple idea for supporting Anti-Bullying
week. “Why not highlight what makes us all
unique with an Odd Socks Day? Children
could celebrate difference and diversity
simply by pulling on a pair of odd socks
and raise some money for a good cause
in the process”.
Odd Socks Day started in 2017 and has
since been a runaway success, raising
over £60,000 to support the Anti-Bullying
Alliance’s work.
Every year Andy records a song to support
the theme of Anti-Bullying and this year’s
theme is ‘Change Starts with Us’. “The
idea is to highlight the changes, the little
things each of us can do, that make
all the difference to someone on
the receiving end of bullying”, Andy explains.
For Andy, tackling bullying “could be
as simple as being there to listen to
someone who is hurting inside. To build
their confidence and support them. Or
thinking twice before posting a hurtful
post on social media. Or speaking out
when banter has crossed the line into
something more harmful.”
“Most of us will experience bullying in some
capacity throughout our lives. Young or
old, we can all do something to show that
bullying is never acceptable.” Andy is working
on the song ‘Change’ and video as we speak.
“All I can say is: think the Muppets meet
Strictly, Odd Socks style! This tune will really
get kids (and grown-ups!) up and dancing!”
In addition to working with Anti-Bullying
week, Andy and the Odd Socks have just
finished filming their new comedy for CBBC
‘Andy and the Band’ and are looking forward
to seeing that broadcast in March 2020.
On top of that, Andy explains, “we’ve had
an amazing summer touring the festival
scene – including performances at the BBC
Summer Social.”
“We’ve been fitting in visits to Odd Socks Day
schools too. Every day is an adventure at the
moment! All our focus now is on making this
year’s Odd Socks Day the biggest and best
one ever!”
Find out more
about how you can get involved at
anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk/anti-bullying-week
Get involved with Odd Socks Day
for Anti-Bullying Week!
Odd Socks Day, with support from SafeToNet, takes place
on Tuesday of Anti Bullying Week – the 12th of November
– and helps raise awareness around anti-bullying.
Odd Socks Day is designed to be fun! It’s an opportunity
for children to express themselves and celebrate their
individuality and what makes us all unique!
There is no pressure on the children to wear the latest
fashion or for parents to buy expensive costumes.
All they have to do to take part is wear odd socks, it
couldn’t be simpler!
