COMMUNITY STUDIES MANUAL <strong>Community</strong> Interviews & Conversations What are you Seeking to Learn? o Who in the community really wants to make a difference? One of the very best ways your church can deepen their relationship with the community is by meeting and talking with key leaders and everyday residents in the area. We recommend you interview 6-10 people to obtain thourough insight for this study. Who You Should Interview When compiling your list of those you want to visit, you should remember that every community has official and unofficial leaders. Official Leaders include political leaders, business leaders, educational leaders, and those who provide health and social services. They can become important contacts as your ministry progresses in the future. Unofficial leaders are people whose opinions heavily influence the decision makers within the community. They may be described as the people who “know everyone and everything.” They usually have the inside scoop. They may also be the people who are involved in many of the established community activities. Do your best to identify a few of these important, but often overlooked, individuals. o What do the people see are the issues? o Who are the real leaders? Consider Interviewing o Councilman/woman o Neighborhood Association o School Principal o Real Estate Agent o Business Owner o Medical Professional o Local Historian o Law Enforcement o Another Church Pastor o Influencial Residents 31
