Termyn Gwari Fleghes (children’s playtime, in Cornish) It is the start of another year, <strong>2018</strong>, and the winter is still with us. For us in Cornwall that usually means wet, windy and cool weather, uncomfortable to be out in. Spare a thought for the birds and animals that have to be out searching for food and shelter! Notice I did not say insects – you will not see any insects outside in the winter, it is too cold for them and there isn’t enough suitable food. You will not see amphibians, such as frogs and toads; or reptiles like snakes through the winter because they are coldblooded, so cannot move and feed at low winter temperatures. In fact, a very good sign that spring is nearly here is when you find frogspawn in a pond – it means the weather is beginning to get warmer. Although it is still winter and we can possibly have snow and frost – the shortest day has passed, and the world is slowly turning towards the spring, the sun is rising earlier and setting later, giving all of us, plants, animals and people longer days and more light and hopefully sunshine. As the amount of light and warmth increases, signs of spring will begin. Here are some of the things you could be looking out for as part of your Spring watch: snowdrops, catkins, daffodils, frogspawn, pussy willows, butterflies, bees – if you are not sure what some of these things look like, look in a book or online. Count how many of these you see before the end of <strong>Feb</strong>ruary, maybe start a nature notebook and record the place you saw them and the date.
