medal Hyman swam a lifetime best. She broke out in a huge<br />

grin and screamed, "Oh my God" over and over when she<br />

realised she had won. O'Neill congratulated her. "I swam<br />

as well as I could," she said. "Obviously, I'm disappointed.<br />

Unfortunately I know my best time would have done it."<br />

Men's 200 m Butterfly<br />

Tom Malchow <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USA won <strong>the</strong> final in a new <strong>Olympic</strong><br />

record, ahead <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Russian Federation's Denys Sylant'yev<br />

and Australia's Justin Norris.<br />

Women's 200 m Individual Medley<br />

Yana Klochkova from Ukraine achieved a rare medley double<br />

when she won <strong>the</strong> 200 m individual medley in <strong>Olympic</strong> record<br />

time. Beatrice Caslaru <strong>of</strong> Romania and Cristina Teuscher <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

USA won <strong>the</strong> silver and bronze medals respectively.<br />

Men's 200 m Individual Medley<br />

Italian Massimiliano Rosolino added a gold medal to his two<br />

freestyle medals when he won <strong>the</strong> 200 m individual medley.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> process he relegated Tom Dolan <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USA, <strong>the</strong> winner<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 400 m individual medley, to second place. Ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

American, Tom Wilkens, was third.<br />

Women's 400 m Individual Medley<br />

Eighteen year-old Yana Klochkova won Ukraine's first ever<br />

swimming medal with a gold in <strong>the</strong> women's 400 m individual<br />

medley. Her time <strong>of</strong> 4:33.59 bettered <strong>the</strong> world record <strong>of</strong><br />

China's Yan Chen, who had failed to make <strong>the</strong> final. Silver<br />

and bronze went to Yasuko Tajimo <strong>of</strong> Japan and Beatrice<br />

Caslaru <strong>of</strong> Romania respectively.<br />

Men's 400 m Individual Medley<br />

Defending champion Tom Dolan <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USA dominated <strong>the</strong><br />

men's 400 m individual medley, breaking his own world<br />

record to secure <strong>the</strong> gold. He clocked 4:11.76 to defeat<br />

team-mate Erik Vendt in 4:14.23 and Canada's Curtis Myden<br />

in 4:15.33.<br />

Women's 4 x 100 m Freestyle Relay<br />

The American women's 4 x 100 m team won <strong>the</strong>ir relay<br />

comfortably, defeating <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands and Sweden. The<br />

foursome <strong>of</strong> Amy van Dyken, Dara Torres, Courtney Shealy<br />

and Jenny Thompson posted a new world record <strong>of</strong> 3:36.61,<br />

previously set by China in 1994 at 3:37.91.<br />
