The Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations
1981; ACOP reg. 3(1)
Requires employees to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to enable
first aid to be given to your employees if they are injured or become ill at work. These Regulations apply
to all workplaces including those with 5 or fewer employees and to the self-employed. The minimum first
aid provision on any work site is:
• A suitably stocked first aid box.
• An appointed person to take charge of the first aid arrangements.
What size kit do I need?
• The size of the kit required is dependant on a combination of
the level of risk in the workplace and the number of employees.

This table is for guidance only and each workplace needs to
evaluate its own level of risk. Special circumstances need to
be considered e.g remoteness from medical services and sites
with several buildings. In these instances there may need to
be more first aid kits than set out in the table.

• States that an employer should make an assessment
of first aid needs appropriate to the circumstances of
each workplace.
• The table below should help an employer assess the
risk and therefore the appropriate number of first aid
personnel required.

* Where first aiders are shown to be unnecessary, there is still a possibility of
an accident or sudden illness, so you should consider providing qualified first
aiders.
** The types of injuries that might arise in working with the hazards identified
will influence whether the fi rst aider should be trained in EFAW or FAW.
