Side Trips
It was a rare weekend evening and our
daughter – a high school senior — was actually
home with us. With the dreary winter
weather, we decided it was a good night to
watch a couple of movies
in our theatre room
in the basement.
Our house had a
home theatre when we
purchased it more than
a decade ago, but it was
pretty bare bones. A
white sheet served as
the screen. Black fabric
covered the ceiling and
cement black walls.
There were two exposed
bulbs for lighting.
A few years back my
husband gave it an extensive upgrade. There
are platforms to give the rows of seating different
elevations. A suspended ceiling. Scones
on the walls. Lighting zones with dimmers.
Surround sound.
And yet we’re surprised how seldom we use
it.
Jeff had been on an airplane earlier in the
week, and had titles of two movies he thought
would be good. We settled into our seats and
waited for the first movie to start — a Tom
Cruise film.
Twenty minutes into it I realized our daughter
was busy with her phone and paying no
attention. An hour into it, she leaned over and
whispered, “This is really boring.”
But it was one of those movies that made
you think, “Surely it will get better.”
It never did, even though we endured the
entire 115 minutes.
Next up was a flick about an underdog
college basketball team. That one was off to a
much better start when I whispered to Katie,
“Isn’t this one better?”

Bringing down the barn
New exhibit at Arts on Grand showcases iconic structure
Barns are a common sight in Iowa, throughout
the Midwest, and really all over the
country. Julie Hamilton of rural Peterson
has captured many of them in photographs and
now they are on display at Arts on Grand in
Spencer.
The “Barns” show is up now through Feb. 24
and features much more than just simple photographs.
There are antiques, barn windows, and other
memorabilia that make the exhibit part art installation,
part photography exposition and part
antique road show.
“It’s very fun to have something different,” said
curator Joanne Schar. “Julie has wonderful taste
and did all the set up. It was fascinating to watch
her create the
atmosphere
of the gallery
show.”
It might
be hard to
believe that
it is her first
gallery show,
but Hamilton
has spent
quite a bit of
time honing
her craft at
events like
Junk Jubilee.
This show
was more artfocused
with
a formal feel
to me and I
had a lot of fun learning to use that space,” Hamilton
said.
It was nine years ago when she took her first
photo of a barn.
“I sold real estate and had a listing with a barn
on it,” Hamilton said. “I started taking photos of
a lot of ones that were falling down. Some are
actually gone now.”
One of the more recognizable ones, was a a
barn near Cedar Falls that Hamilton said everyone
could recognize and was actually on the
historical registry and is now gone.
While the idea of documenting these structures
may have started her on this path, it has taken her
on quite an interesting journey.
At first Hamilton just thought about framing
some of the photos to put around the house.
Her daughters urged her to do some editing to
the photos first if she was going to go through all
that effort.
That lead to the evolution of her photographs
to more artistic ventures featuring textured layers,
merged images and much more.
Eventually antiques were added to the mix. She
started picking up barn items along the way and
now also repurposes items.
Nashville is a frequent trip for Hamilton and
she brings Iowa items down there and takes
pictures of southern barns to bring up here, comparing
styles of barns in different states along the
way.
“We jumped in with both feet,” Hamilton said.
“I’ve always been artsy but never imagined doing
all this. It’s so rewarding to create something
that someone else likes enough to want to hang
on their wall. I want people who experience the
show to have an idea of how they can integrate art
into a home.”

Chili cook-off
Fire departments duke it out
for chili championship
Chili lovers have another event to
add to their calendars. Dickinson
County area fire departments
have their crock pots ready to boil as
they prepare for the first-ever Battle of
the Chili Pots.
Taking place at the Milford Fire Department
Station on Saturday, Feb. 3,
the contest will pit the best chili chefs
from each department in both mild
and hot divisions.
Russ Bell, an advanced EMT and
volunteer with the Milford Fire
Department, was one of those who
helped get the event off the ground by
starting the brainstorming process last
September.
Bell and another volunteer had
attended similar cook-offs in Clay
County over the years and thought it
would be a great way to raise funds
for the fire departments in Dickinson
County.
“It was something we really enjoyed
and was a lot of fun,” Bell said.
“Departments are known for their
firehouse chilis and they can all show
off their cooking skills.”
Guests will get a bowl for $5 and
have a chance to try up 20 types of
chili if all fire departments and ambulance
teams bring an entry in both the
mild and spicy categories.
The event gets started at 5 p.m. and
runs for two hours with the winner
announced around 7 p.m.
Each guest will get two beads, one
for each chili division, and the votes
will be tallied at the end.
The winner will get bragging rights
and a traveling trophy to keep until
the next year’s contest.
Each department will get a split of the
proceeds. Bell noted that the Milford
Fire Department would likely put theirs
into their fund for a new jaws of life.
“Everyone should come hungry and
come ready to enjoy some great chili,”
Bell said.

Short and sweet
PLAC hosts Oscar Nominated Shorts viewing
Art is long and life is short.
But sometimes art can be
short, too.
The Pearson Lakes Art Center along
with Cinema at the Lakes will be presenting
works of art that are short by
category. At 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11,
they’ll present the 2018 Oscar Nominated
Short Films.
Watching the Oscars is admittedly
more fun if you have seen the movies
and are rooting for your favorites. This
event will give you an opportunity to
see some of the movies that you might
otherwise not have a chance to see.
“This is the first year that we are
hosting this event. It’s never been
here before and no one else is doing
it. We’re hoping to draw in some
people and have an exciting event,”
said Alesia Johnson with the Pearson
Lakes Art Center. “If you are going to
see them it’s going to be here because
they aren’t anywhere else.”
The event will allow movie lovers
to watch both the shorts that have
been nominated in the Animated
categories as well as the Live Action
nominees. The Animation shorts will
run approximately 90 minutes and
the Live Action shorts will take approximately
110 minutes.
There will be a five-minute intermission
between the two sections.
Another fun aspect of this event
is that the movie goers won’t just be
watching the shorts, they’ll be voting
for their favorites.
“We are looking forward to seeing
how the votes of the attendees here
compare with the actual winners,”
Johnson said.
While there currently aren’t age limits
set on the event it might be a good
idea to check with the Pearson Lakes
Arts Center before bringing young
children to the event.
“We will be able to give a better
sense of age appropriateness for each
program following the reveal of the
nominees. In general, the Live Action
Program has not been suitable for
children or teens,” according to the
press release.
Tickets for the event are $20.
While the event is about exposing
people to something out of their comfort
zone, it’s also about having fun.
“I hope people leave with a chance
to widen their horizons a bit. Sometimes
the shorts are overlooked in the
Oscars,” Johnson said. “But people
really do love short film series. I hope
people will have a very pleasant time
watching them.” F

Sweetheart Dance on set for Feb. 11
It’s time to get on your dancing
shoes.
The Lakes Area Senior Center in
Spirit Lake will be hosting their firstever
Sweetheart Dance on Sunday,
Feb. 11, from 2-5 p.m.
The dance will feature music with
Vince’s Fun Time Karaoke. So people
who long to sing a sweet melody to
their sweetheart can also jump on the
karaoke mic and do that as well as
sweeping them into a dance.
The idea for the dance came from
the popularity of another event that
takes place at the senior center.
“They have a ballroom dance here
once a month and we decided it
would be something that other people
would enjoy, too,” said Adrian Van
Bochove, a Lakes Area Senior Center
board member and volunteer coordinator.
“It’s a new thing we are doing
this year and if it goes over real good,
we’ll do more dances in the future.”
Even though the event is taking
place at the senior center, it’s open to
dance lovers of any age.
“It’s for any age range. Even if you
can’t dance, we will have some people
who are in recovery come, they can
still listen to the music and have a
good time,” Van Bochove said. “It’s
for any people who want to come
and have a good time. There will be
munchies, too, and no alcohol.”
The music that will be getting your
feet tapping depends
on what people
decide to sing as
well as what Vince
decides to play.
“Vince is really
energetic with his
music. There will
probably be some
older country and
rock ‘n’ roll. Probably
not any Metallica,”
Van Bochove said with a laugh.
“In between Vince and I, we’ll get
people out on the dance floor and
having a fine time.”
All in all this dance is a great opportunity
to treat your sweetheart to a
special experience.
“This is our first dance like this so
I’m excited about that and it’s Valentine’s
Day so it will be a good time to
bring your dancing partner to a fun
event,” Van Bochove said. F

Dust off the poddle skirts and don
your best leather jacket. It’s off
to the sock hop at Spencer Community
Theatre. The event will take
place Saturday, Feb. 10 from 7-11 p.m.
Tickets are $35 per person or $60 per
couple.
“Last year we did this for the first
time and it’s something we hope to
keep repeating,” said Rusty Ruth,
executive artistic director at Spencer
Community Theatre.
While last year they took it back to
the 1920s with a Great Gatsby theme
that meshed well with the art deco
style of their building, this year they
are taking it back to the 1950s with
the Sweetheart Sock Hop.
“A lot of people still have their
poodle skirts and leather jackets,”
Ruth said. “It’s a nice coincidence that
we have our production of ‘Bus Stop’
coming up from the same era.”
The evening will also include both
silent and live auctions, as well as a
few contests.
One competition for sure will be
the limbo. There could also be a
“Twist” contest and while guests don’t
have to dress up to participate in the
event overall, there will also be prizes
for the best costumes.
If there is no ’50s garb in your closet
you can also pick through the costume
shop.
Rentals will be offered
at discounted
prices for the event.
There will also be
a photo booth so
visitors can have
keepsakes to take
home.
“It’s a fun way to
go out with friends
and celebrate theatre
and it’s always
more fun to dress
up,” Ruth said. “It’s
also always great to
be able put a spotlight
on what we’re
doing and highlight
the shows we have
coming up.”
The contests will begin after the live
auction, which kicks off at around
8:30 p.m.
Complimentary food service will
start right when the doors open and
includes classic diner fare like sliders,
wings and fries, as well as an ice cream
sundae bar.

FM’s “Kevin & Rhiannon” will emcee
the event.
“We wanted to make the event
more engaging since it’s not a live
performance, so this year we added an
emcee as well as the contests,” Ruth
said.
Adding to the ambiance will be the
characters of Rita and Rhoda from
Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas”
Last year’s theme for the fundraiser
was “The Great Gatsby.”

Proceeds from the event will help

a really fun party,” Ruth said.
