mailed to homeowners in Granby. Our entire publishing
team hopes you have enjoyed receiving your complimentary
monthly issue.
We've gotten overwhelmingly positive feedback about our
efforts and look forward to continuing to serve you.
Our desire is to continually improve the content of Granby
What do you not like? Are there some features you could do without? What other
content would you like to be included? Your feedback and comments are invaluable
to us.
Would you do me a favor and email us your thoughts? Your email can be brief,
and any comment would be helpful. Email me at tserino@bestversionmedia.com
February is a good month to express appreciation to those who've enriched our
FAMILY FEATURE
T
wo time-tested pursuits help the Auer
family bond: a love of sports and the
outdoors.
Fortunately for the Auers, open space and
sports are plentiful in Granby.
Lawrence (or Larry) and Correne (or Corrie)
moved to Granby in 2008, and after arriving they
welcomed two sons: William, 8, and Charles, 5.
Larry is doubly invested in Granby — as a
resident and a math teacher at Granby Memorial
High School.
“I enjoy spending a lot of time in the McLean
Game Refuge and other land trusts around
town,” Larry says. “I also enjoy teaching in the
town where I live ... and being so connected to
the community.”
Corrie likewise appreciates the close-knit
community in Granby.
“I enjoy the many community events such
as races, Open Farm Day, events at the Y and at
Salmon Brook Park,” Corrie says. “I love being
so close to McLean for trail running and hiking
with friends and family. ... There are so many
places and trails to explore around Granby.”
She adds, “I also appreciate the town’s support
for sports — at the middle school and high school
level, rec and travel sports and Little League.”
Larry and Corrie, both 40, take their enthusiasm
for sports to the sidelines: Yes, coaching
runs in the family.
In addition to teaching at GMHS, Larry has
coached at the high school and middle school
levels. He has also served as a volunteer coach
for his sons’ baseball and basketball teams.
Meanwhile, Corrie has coached field hockey
and girls tennis in Granby.
As for William and Charlie, they both play
basketball, baseball and soccer. Their mutual
favorite subject: PE.
4 GRANBY LIVING

“Larry and I played many sports in high school
and recreationally growing up,” says Corrie, who
graduated from East Windsor High in 1996.
“Now watching my kids play is one of my favorite
things to do. It’s something both of us are passionate
about, and I think our children feel the
same way about sports and outdoor activities.”
A third-grader at Wells Road School, William
also participates in the Math Competition Club.
He relishes sports statistics, and word has it that
he’s good with numbers — apparently taking after
his father, the math teacher.
Charlie is in kindergarten at Kelly Lane
School, and when he isn’t playing in an organized
rec league, he loves playing the backyard
classic: Wiffle Ball.
“Our boys play with each other every day and
are each other’s best friends,” says Larry, who
graduated from East Hartford High in 1995.
“They both enjoy hiking in McLean.”
William and Charlie also take part in another
classic childhood activity — riding bikes on
their street with their neighborhood friends.
Naturally, athletics played an important role
in Corrie and Larry’s budding friendship. They
met in 1997 at UConn, where they played a variety
of intramural sports together and lived in
the same dorm. They both graduated in 2000.
Their shared college experience extended to
the classroom. They both received bachelor of
science degrees in civil engineering, and they
both minored in environmental engineering.
“I enjoy teaching in the
town where I live...and
being so connected to
the community.”
— Larry Auer
Long before finishing their college journey
together in Connecticut and later landing in
Granby, Corrie and Larry began their life journey
in the same place — they were both born in
Hartford.
They were married at Storrs Congregational
Church on Oct. 27, 2001.
Today, Corrie is a civil and environmental engineer
for a consulting firm in Farmington, HRP
Associates. “I went back to work full-time this
past summer after spending the last eight years
as a stay-at-home mom,” she says.
During her time away from a traditional office,
she worked part-time at the YMCA, tutored
middle school and high school youth in
math and SATs, and coached in Granby. She also
found time to be a room parent and to volunteer
otherwise with the schools and PTO.
As a family, the Auers’ outdoor recreation
includes: camping, hiking, kayaking, mountain
biking, road biking, rock climbing, skiing,
snowshoeing and trail running (and that might
be a short list).
“Granby and the Farmington Valley as a whole
have so many beautiful places for hiking, kayaking,
road and mountain biking,” Corrie says.
The Auers have been members of the Farmington
Valley YMCA in Granby since 2009.
“I’ve made so many amazing friends through
the Y and through my kids,” say Corrie. “It
makes me happy to see so many people attend
the Y for healthy living and for kids’ sports and
swimming classes, etcetera.”
Given the UConn-Storrs connection, Larry
notes, “We are huge UConn Huskies fans and
try and make it to several men’s basketball
games each year. We also root for the Celtics,
Yankees and [New York] Giants.”
Back home in Granby, the Auers appreciate
their neighborhood.
“I love my neighborhood,” affirms Larry, who
has a master’s degree in secondary mathematics
education from Eastern Connecticut State.
“We have great neighbors. ... Everyone is very
friendly and always willing to help each other
out. At the bus stop we have more than 10 kids
that get on the bus together. It is great that my
children have so many other kids to play with.”
Larry and Corrie moved to town after spending
two years in North Bend, Washington, followed
by a year in West Dover, Vermont. They
are members of South Church in Granby.
Larry has an idea for the town suggestion box:
He would like to see more access for mountain
biking in Granby’s protected parks.
“The town of Granby has significant trail networks,
most of which are closed to mountain
biking,” he observes. “I mountain bike often
in surrounding areas like Cowles Park in East
Granby and on the Metacomet Trail that runs
through Simsbury and East Granby.”
continued on page 6
FEBRUARY 2018 5

For her part, Corrie competes in sprint triathlons
at Winding Trails in Farmington and has
participated in many running races in Granby
and the Farmington Valley.
It’s clear that sports and the outdoors are key
ingredients in the Auer family’s journey. But
what is the ballast?
“I believe the key to a strong family is spending
quality time together,” Larry says. “Our family
does so much together, and as they’ve grown
older, our children have become a large part of
everything we do.”
“I’ve made so many amazing friends through
the Y and through my kids.”
TALK OF THE TOWN
What do you think about the
prospect of self-driving cars?
MIKE POPOVITCH MARQI HEFFNER STEFAN SABBAGH AUDREY LAMPERT
“I think it's a good idea.
I think it'll modernize
and streamline the way
transportation moves on
existing roads.”
“It should be a good thing.
It'll be amazing to see people
sitting, eating and talking
while on the highway, but it's
a long time off. It'll be difficult
at the beginning, but once
they get it fully going, it'll be
fine.”
“I don't think it will be a good
thing. Something could go
wrong ... computer hacking,
etc...I would be uncomfortable
with it.”
“I don't think they'll be able
to work out the bugs — too
many variables, too much
randomness. I wouldn't feel
comfortable getting into a
Is Myopolis Changing the
Face of Social Media?
JANE, A LEADER, NOT A FOLLOWER
Download the free app in Google Play and the App Store
In the wake of frustration that many people have with social
media, Myopolis could be changing the face of social
media. A well-publicized study released last April (Harvard
Business Review April 10, 2017) concluded that depression
may be linked to social media usage. According to a recent
article from CNBC, Facebook admitted usage could be bad
for you. The harm stems from reading posts versus interacting
with others, which can positively impact your mood.
Anyone who used social media during the last election can
attest to the tiring intensity of the political posts. It becomes
very uncomfortable when you face the choice of either
“unfriending” your relatives and co-workers or building
frustration by reading their divisive opinions.
Myopolis cracked that code by adding filters to each
topic. This allows you to keep your family and co-workers
while dumping their politics (or cat videos for that matter).
There are twenty-some filters, including topics such as
sports, news, fashion, real estate, and so forth. Additionally,
Myopolis gives local influencers a powerful platform by
ranking the top leaders in each of the categories. The
category leaders can increase their influence beyond their
own towns and into the state and national levels.
The map view allows users to see Pings (posts) from their
own Private Citizens (friends) and the people who they have
Citizenships with (people they follow). If you’ve ever wanted
to be known as the leader in sports, fashion, real estate or
news, now’s your chance.
Myopolis is a unique and useful social media platform that
restores the peace and creates an environment where you’re
in control of what you see and read.
EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR
Contemplating divorce?
Consider divorce by mediation
BY REBECCA OLESEN
A divorce is a difficult time in anyone’s life,
but the victims of divorce are the children.
When parents fight, the children suffer.
When parents decide to work with a divorce
mediator, they are more able to reach an agreement
about the issues of the divorce, conflict is
eliminated, and the parties can work together to
help the children through this emotional crisis.
The divorce does not end the marital relationship
if there are children. The parties still need
to work together for the benefit of the children
long after the divorce is finalized. Birthdays, holidays,
vacation time, school activities, teacher
conferences, graduations, medical issues, weddings
— all this needs to be coordinated between
the parents.
Issues and events with grandchildren extend
contact even further. Doing this becomes
extremely difficult if the divorce has been contested.
A contested divorce leaves scars that are
difficult to heal.
Benefits of Divorce Mediation
• Reduce the costs of divorce and lawyers' fees
• Benefit the children who are the victims of
divorce
• Expedite the process and reduce court appearances
• Eliminate as much animosity as possible
• Create a fair agreement
If the parties are not willing to compromise
— if they want to fight or be unreasonable —
mediation may not be the way.
If the parties want to work together for the
children and themselves, and if they want to
save money, expedite the process and remain
partners in raising the children, then mediation
is a better way to end a marriage. It will
benefit you and your family.
A Certified Divorce Mediator Will:
• Explain the divorce process
• Prepare all court paperwork
• File documents with the court
• Identify issues
• Help you reach a comprehensive divorce
agreement
Divorce mediation is also the best way for
couples without children who have issues that
can be worked out without an extended court
battle.
EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR
A winter advisory
for seniors and their caregivers
BY CHRISTINE LOOBY
While the holidays and winter months can be a lighthearted time full of joy and
good cheer, the hustle and bustle — and the stress that comes along with it — can lead
to a dark period of anxiety, loneliness and regret for some.
During this time of year, you may notice changes in the behaviors of aging loved
ones, and it is important to recognize mood shifts and to determine whether they
might simply be the holiday blues or something that would best be helped by medical
intervention. In general, caregivers suggest that if symptoms extend beyond a week or
two, it's time to seek professional support.
One possible cause for a gloomy outlook is seasonal affective disorder (SAD.) According
to the Mayo Clinic's website, SAD is "a type of depression that's related to
changes in seasons — SAD begins and ends at about the same times every year. If
you're like most people with SAD, your symptoms start in the fall and continue into
the winter months. …Treatment for SAD may include light therapy (phototherapy),
medications and psychotherapy."
During the cold and dark months, SAD can evoke symptoms of depression and
isolation.
A Vitamin D deficiency could also be the culprit if an aging loved one is describing
fatigue and depression along with muscle and bone aches and pains. The Office
A brighter smile for your whole family
of Dietary Supplements within the National Institutes of Health suggests
that older adults might be at risk of not getting enough Vitamin D, as their
bodies may be challenged in converting and absorbing the Vitamin D in
foods, and they may not get enough sunlight to produce Vitamin D on
their own.
Some medications can interfere with metabolizing Vitamin D. A doctor
can diagnose a deficiency with a simple blood test. Beef liver, egg yolks,
cheeses, salmon, mackerel, tuna, fortified milk, yogurt and cereal are wise
diet choices for those looking to boost their D intake.
Depression affects about 16 million American adults, according to the
National Alliance on Mental Illness. Those who suffer from it often experience
key symptoms including:
• A persistent sad, anxious or "empty" mood
• Sleeping too little, early morning awakening, or sleeping too much
• Reduced appetite and weight loss, or increased appetite and weight gain
• Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
• Restlessness or irritability
• Difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions
• Fatigue
• Feeling guilty, helpless or worthless
• Thoughts of death or suicide
Make an appointment with a physician if you or someone you love experiences
five or more of these symptoms for longer than two weeks or if
the symptoms are severe enough to interfere with your daily routine.
By knowing the signs that can indicate something more than a passing
case of the blues, by attentively listening, and by knowing when additional
resources are needed, you can shine a little light on the dark days and
nights of winter for the seniors in your life.
GRANBY HISTORY
THIS MONTH
IN GRANBY HISTORY
BY KEN KUHL
GRANBY
February 11, 1839 — At a Special Town Meeting
holden at the Episcopal Church House in Granby
on the 11th day of February 1839, legally warned
and held for the purposes recorded in the above
written warning. Voted to build the Bridge across
the Farmington River at Tariffville...
As you travel around Connecticut, you may
come to a town with “ville” in its name. In the
Hartford area, we are familiar with Collinsville,
Hazardville and Tariffville.
The village of Tariffville, on the Farmington
River bordering Granby in Simsbury’s northeast
corner, takes its name from the Tariff Act
of 1824 and the Tariff Manufacturing Company,
which built the first carpet mill in America there
in 1825.
The French term “ville” was often used in the
area of a Connecticut town with manufacturing
settlements that were begun after the American
Revolution. A few “ville” names predate the
Revolution, but most of them are named after
European settlements or dukedoms. For example,
Granville, Massachusetts, was named for the
British Earl of Granville.
In Granby there were areas like Spoonville,
Pegville, Goodrichville and Mechanicsville.
Sometimes these town sections were named after
a product — silverware production (spoons)
or an item used in making shoes (pegs) — or the
owner of the business (Goodrich).
In the early 19th century, Granby was utilizing
almost every body of water in town for its
manufacturing industry. Salmon Brook in West
and the Farmington River in Turkey
Hills (East Granby) in a little area known as
Spoonville.
In 1829 Whitfield Cowles built a new factory
just east of the Spoonville Bridge, about 200 feet
north of the Farmington River. He manufactured
wire and cards used to convert raw wool
into batts. In 1836, after Whitfield and his son
Madison passed away, the business was transferred
to William B. Cowles.
An innovator, William converted the business
in about 1840 and manufactured flatware
made of German silver. In 1843 Cowles was
joined by Asa Rogers, a well-known silversmith
from Hartford, and the outfit became known as
the world-famous company, 1847 Rogers Bros.
In the 1830s Hezekiah Goodrich, a tanner
and shoemaker, built a shoe manufacturing mill
on the north branch of Salmon Brook near the
junction of Day Street and North Granby Road.
The area became known as Goodrichville.
Granby’s largest employer in this era, however,
was Truman Allen, who invented a process
using small wooden pegs to attach the leather
top to the sole of the shoe. His business, located
at 10 Wells Road, produced 30,000 pairs of
shoes per year and employed 35 people, and the
area became known as Pegville.
Meanwhile, Granby’s Old Mill Pond Village,
on the south end of Lake Manitook, was once
known as Mechanicsville. Here there was a brass
foundry, sawmill and clothing works. Today we
still enjoy this little “ville” — especially during
the Christmas season!
CONNECTICUT
February 1839 — In February 1839 slave traders
illegally seized 53 Africans in the British colony
of Sierra Leone and planned to sell them in
Cuba, a Spanish colony, transporting them on
the ship La Amistad.
The Amistad Mutiny ensued. The Africans
took the ship, which was apprehended by the U.S.
Navy, and they were imprisoned in Connecticut.
After a trial in January 1840 in a federal court
in Hartford, a judge ruled in favor of the African
captives. The decision was appealed to the U.S. Supreme
Court, which upheld the ruling in March
1841 via a 7-1 decision, freeing the captives.
UNITED STATES
February 11, 1839 — The first university west
of the Mississippi River is established, the University
of Missouri.
WORLD
February 1839 — The short-lived Aroostook
War begins. The armed conflict — also called
the Pork and Beans War and the Lumberjacks'
War — centered on a disagreement over the international
border between the British colony
of New Brunswick in Canada and the U.S. state
of Maine. The conflict was sparked when Canadian
lumberjacks began logging in the disputed
Aroostook area.
CELEBRATING OUR SENIORS
Granby's Phillip Main is a
‘New Englander, through and through’
BY SARAH MERRILL
F
ormer Granby Probate Judge Phillip Main and his wife Patricia have lived in Granby for 55
years. Main estimates that when they moved here in 1962, Granby had about 5,300 residents,
compared to today’s 13,500 or so.
“Today, Granby is held in very high regard around the state. It’s a town that draws young families,”
Main says.
He notes that this was not yet the case in the 1960s and ’70s, when the town was experiencing some
growing pains. For a while, town meetings were quite heated and the schools needed attention. Main
believes that thanks to a group of talented residents — some of whom proved their commitment by
serving on various town boards for close to two decades — Granby has “grown up beautifully.”
He adds that Granby is still a place where partisanship rarely gets in the way of town leadership
making the decisions that are right for Granby.
A self-professed “New Englander, through and through,” Main was born in 1936 and raised in
New Britain. He attended Bates College (class of 1958) and then the George Washington University
Law School. Main returned to Connecticut, passing the Connecticut Bar in 1961.
He worked for Connecticut General Life Insurance (now Cigna) for only one year before deciding
he wanted to practice law. Main began his law career in 1963 at the Simsbury law firm Whitman and
Pease. (William “Bill” Pease was a longtime West Granby resident.)
Main became a partner at the firm in 1967 and practiced law there for about 40 years, after which
he practiced in Granby for five years, finally retiring at age 75.
Main says that his career was enhanced by serving as Granby’s probate judge. He was elected in
the early 1990s, when longtime probate judge Arline Mooney retired.
“It was a welcome opportunity to serve the town,” explains Main.
A probate judge handles cases such as estates, conservatorships and adoptions. “The job is exclusively
about working with people and helping solve problems, some of them quite emotional in nature.”
He adds that in a small town like Granby, he was friendly with many of the families he served.
Main held the office for 15 years until the mandatory retirement age of 70.
First residing on West Granby Road, the Mains moved to their current home in a woodsy neighborhood
off Barn Door Hills Road. They’ve been in their home, built for them by their good friend Al
Pierce of Pierce Builders Inc., for 47 years. Some of their neighbors have been there equally as long.
They are bordered on two sides by the McLean Game Refuge. Their peace and quiet has occasionally
been disturbed over the years when hikers have come to the Main’s door, having lost their way.
Phillip Main at age 13 in 1949
“We think it’s great,” laughs Main. “We just
pop them in the car and drive them back over to
Route 10, where they started their hike.”
Phillip and Patricia raised two children in
Granby. Main has fond memories of coaching
Little League and basketball, watching the kids
march in the Memorial Day parade, and having the kids by his side when
selling Christmas trees with the Granby Lions Club.
“They had all the great experiences that Granby kids still have,” Main
says. “Of course, the kids used to complain that there was nothing going on
in Granby. They said they would never live here as adults.” Well, Main’s son
is a Granby resident whose own kids went through the Granby schools.
The Mains have contributed to the town in innumerable ways over the
years. In addition to his time as probate judge, Main is a 55-year member
of the Granby Lions Club, serves on the board of the Salmon Brook
Historical Society, and remains an active member of the Commission on
Aging. In the past he served on the Planning and Zoning Commission.
We Listen.
As for Patricia, she was involved in the YWCA and volunteered heavily
with the schools when their children were attending. More recently, she’s
been with the Granby Community Fund for six years. The Mains are also
active at South Congregational Church, where Main is a deacon emeritus.
Phillip and Patricia Main have no intention of leaving Granby, where
their roots run deep.
“Pat and I should be downsizing at our age, looking for different accommodations,”
he says. “But we’re not going to leave Granby.”
A majority of their friends have stayed in Granby and, of course, part of
Main’s role with the Commission on Aging is cultivating an environment
that encourages senior citizens to stay.
“Any move we make will be within Granby,” says Main. “We’ve had a
tremendous life here.”
WALK-INS WELCOME!
Q: I read about the VisionBoard workshop that you do
every year. It sounds interesting, but what if I don’t have a
‘vision’? Can I still attend?
A: OMG, Yes! In fact, not having a preconceived idea of the year
ahead makes you the BEST candidate for truly getting the MOST
out of this workshop! I lead you through stretches to relax you,
then through a guided visualization that will assist you in releasing
the past and envisioning your future. Then, you are given all sorts
of creative materials to unleash your imagination, allowing your
VisionBoard to naturally take shape. It sounds deceptively simple,
yet nothing short of life-changing!
