Iamanimpatient gardener. By ebruary I 

am always eager to get started and my 

greenhouse means that Ican do ust that. 

Agreenhouse means that Idon’t fear the 

weather, Ican potter in my garden all year 

round and Ican grow arange of plants that 

would not survive without protection. 

Most gardens have room for atleast atiny 

greenhouse and its well worth trying to 

incorporate one into your space. 

Before choosing a greenhouse, check 

whether your local planning authority 

places any restrictions in terms of size or 

position. sually there are no problems. 

I prefer electric heating, which doesn’t 

smell and doesn’t produce the excessive 

amounts of water vapour associated with 

paraffin. Make sure you use a qualified 

electrician and that all the sockets are 

rated for outdoor use. it athermostat 

and the heat will only come on when 

necessary, making itvery economical. 

Ideally agreenhouse should beplaced in a 

bright spot because poor light and heavy 

shade will mean sickly spindly plants. Buy 

as bigagreenhouseasyou canaccommodate 

because Iguarantee that nomatter how 

big itseems atfirst you will fill it. 

You can make agreenhouse from poles 

and polythene but it won’t last more than 

acouple ofyears and won’t be pretty to 

look at. ully glazed aluminium greenhouses 

are good value, and if you like wood then 

go for western red cedar, which ages well 

and lasts alongtime. It’s important to have 

level foundations 

You don’t have toheat agreenhouse but I 

like tobecause it lets me get anearly start 

in spring, and keeps my tender pot plants 

alive through the winter. When Ihad an 

unheated greenhouse my frost-tender 

plants rarely survived. 

At the other end of the year make sure 

you have ventilation, or your plants will 

cook. If you can afford it go for the 

automatic arms which open ventilators 

if the greenhouse reaches a certain 

temperature. Also consider blinds to help 

prevent sun-scorch. 

Iarrange mygreenhouse with staging on 

onesideand asoil bed on the other formy 

tomatoes to grow in, and I’ve attached 

some guttering and adownpipe to awater 

butt so Ican collect rainwater.It’s my little 

haven in ebruarywhere Iplant seeds and 

imagine what mygarden will look like in a 

three months’ time.

People with learning disabilities and their 

families across Derbyshire are being given the 

chance to help shape their future support. 

Derbyshire County Council isholding aseries 

of workshops designed to encourage people 

with learning disabilities to express their 

ambitions for afulfilling life. 

The council wants tomake sure that support 

focuses on an individual’s strengths to help 

them achieve personal goals instead of trying to 

fit people in to services that are available. 

So it is inviting people with learning disabilities, 

everyone involved in their lives and interested 

agencies and groups to have their say.

changes would be made to the services we 

provide without consulting people first. 

Meetings will also be held for people with

forpeoplewith behavioural supportneedswho 

may require adifferent approach and methods 

of communication.

meeting to ensure there is enough space and 

everybody’s needs can be catered for.

After an accident atwork which crushed his spine and 

left him paralysed, doctors told Stephen Birkby he 

would never walk again. 

Stephen, 4, was left monoplegic after lifting apatio 

door at work, the weight of which twisted and crushed 

hislower spine. Hisparalysedleg then became infected, 

and abiopsy revealed deep tissue skin cancer close to 

the bone. 

It was then that he made the brave decision to have his 

left leg amputated. 

I’vestill got no feeling, Iwalk with my hip and it looks 

abit weird but hey –I’m walking! And they said I’d 

never walk again, so there’s a bonus to it,said Stephen. 

Are there days where Iwish I’d never had it took off 

Of course there are. And days where Iwonder what 

might have happened differentlyObviously. But Iust 

get on with it and keep going. 

ast -forward 14 years, and he’s working asthe founder 

and principal instructor at D.A.W.S, a charity gym 

initiative helping all genres ofdisabled and gym-phobic 

people in Sheffield get back into exercise. 

Stephen started D.A.W.S Disability Awareness With 

Sportthree and a half years ago in an attempt to 

combat the lack of exercise provision for disabled 

peopleinthe city. Based at St George’s Park, Westfield, 

Stephen helped to design and customise the gym to 

cater to their members’ specific health needs. 

We’ve got people with cerebral palsy, people with 

spinal problems, ex-servicemen, people ofacertain age 

who come and use it, sort of 6plus who have 

long-term issues, people who are obese,he said. 

Although some illnesses are really complex, there’s 

always something that people can do to exercise. 

After becoming aregistered charity inOctober, they 

raised enough money to buy aspecialist wheelchair 

trainer – a piece of kit that has revolutionised the 

gym experience for many of their wheelchair-bound 

members. 

Stephen saidThe beauty ofitisthat we can put it in 

with aspin class where you’ve got able-bodied people 

as well, sowecan put people inthe same class astheir 

partner say, and they do their bit in their wheelchair.

In addition to the permanent gym, Stephen runs 

D.A.W.S sessionsatHackenthorpe Community Centre 

every Wednesday evening to help bring the community 

together through exercise and sport. 

Speakingabout thebenefits of theinitiative, he saidIt’s 

not ustpurely down to exercise –it’s about getting 

people out of the house, somewhere they can meet 

different people, so it’s tackling that social exclusion. 

Inadditiontoinstructing at the gym, Stephen is qualified 

to help run aGPreferral service in the local community, 

something which he says he’d like to do on alarger 

scale. D.A.W.S member Leanne W, 2, was referred 

by her GP and attends the weekly community sessions. 

ShesaidIsufferfrom depressionand anxietysoitwas 

a bit daunting to go into a traditional gym. I was 

referred by adoctor who thought that it might help me 

out, and it was so reassuringtoknow thatIwas coming 

into awelcoming place.

Knowledge ofAngels –Jill Paton Walsh 

Jill Paton Walsh is an extraordinarily versatile writer. 

Many will know her for her numerous works for 

children,and more recentlyfor her work continuing the 

legacy of Dorothy L Sayers’ Peter Wimsey novels. 

In addition to this, she has written a number of 

intriguing and thought provoking novels for adults, 

and ‘Knowledge of Angels’ is an excellent example of 

these two characteristics. 

The story is set on a Mediterranean island in the 

fifteenth century, described in almost cinematic detail 

in the opening pages, as Paton Walsh invites us to 

contemplate the nature offiction and storytelling. To 

this closed community come two strangers –one from 

the outside, acastaway found by local fishermen, and 

one from within, agirl seemingly raised bywolves in the 

forests of the island. One is as eloquent as the other 

is savage, but their fates become irretrievably tied 

together as their stories progress. 

At the heart of the book lie anumber of questions of 

belief. Palinor, the castaway, professes to have no 

religion, which poses achallenge to the authority ofthe 

Inquisition on the island. Amara, the wolf child, seems 

unredeemably animal in her behaviour, but begins to 

grow under the care ofthe nuns of Sant Clara, raising 

the issue ofnature and nurture. Both oftheir stories 

are also about love, and self-knowledge, and what is and 

is not possible. 

Yet thebook is writteninsuchaway, that these weighty 

questions are explored at the same time as creating a 

page-turning thoroughly engrossing story, inwhich the 

reader is drawn inturn into the lives ofAmara and 

Palinor. Disturbing, sensitive and deeply affecting, this 

is abook that will keep you thinking for averylong time.

The first novel inHorowitz’s phenomenally successful 

Alex Rider series, this is a must for fans of action, 

adventure and James Bond style one liners. 

Alex Rider isaseemingly ordinary 14 year old boy.

Horowitz keeps the reader moving quickly from action

spy, it all becomes gripping and plausible. Inparticular, 

thegadgets Alex usesand the villainous Herod Sayle will 

appeal to teenage readers – while the intriguingly 

sinister character ofYassen Gregorovitch is introduced 

here, ready tobedeveloped further through the rest of 

the series. 

Ideal for fansofripping yarns andreluctant readers alike, 

you will find that one chapter is never enough, as 

Horowitz is the master of the cliff-hanger ending. A12 

year old of my acquaintance told me recently that this 

book is‘even better than the film’ –ifyou know any 12 

year olds, then you will know that Ineed not say any 

more than that!
