VISION: UP-IN-OUT
To be a celebrative community growing in spiritual maturity and
passion (UP), to effectively equip disciples (IN) to purposefully
share Christ’s love (OUT).
MISSION:
Lakeside is an inclusive, loving community of believers who encourage
spiritual growth through relevant and challenging biblical teaching
and relational evangelism.
P A S T O R S ’ R E P O R T
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I
am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. For I will
pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out
my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. They will
spring up like grass in a meadow, like poplar trees by flowing streams.”
I S A . 4 3 : 1 9 , 4 4 : 3 - 4
These are verses that have come up a number of times
in the last few years. They are a picture of flourishing life
where once there was a dryness and death. They have
encouraged us to live with faith and expectation that God
is at work around us. To open our eyes to see new things.
To have hearts that embrace and celebrate the evidences
of God’s handiwork.
Joel Thiessen is a professor of sociology at Ambrose
University College in Calgary (where our intern Adam
Koning attended) and the director of the Flourishing
Congregations Institute. Through their research of
churches in Canada they have unearthed three strands
that they believe are common to those churches that are
growing rather than shrinking.
1. Growing congregations have a clear self-identity;
they know why they exist and they have an ethos
that is willing to try new things and take risks.
2. There were internal catalysts, such as having the
laity actively involved, making sure the place is
welcoming and inviting and that there’s diversity
across ethnic, age and gender lines.
3. Lastly, Thiessen said it appears flourishing
congregations are heavily engaged in their own
neighbourhoods. They are part of what is going
on around them and involved in important societal
issues that affect their neighbours.
I wonder, how closely these things describe us? Let’s
embrace what God is doing and find fresh meaning and
purpose as we live out our calling as a church.
Throughout this report we have scattered quotes from
individuals from our Lakeside family. Along with the
usually financial information and Nominating Report etc.
please read these brief testimonies to God’s work among
us and give thanks to Him.
In January of 2017, Pastor Greg Elford from New Heights FMCiC church
in Mission spoke at Lakeside on a Sunday morning. He shared the story
of their church leadership feeling a sense of what has been called “holy
discontent” - a feeling that things weren’t as they should be in the church
and community and that they needed to make some dramatic changes.
After the service over lunch he challenged some of Lakeside’s leaders
with an uncomfortable question: “Why are you located downtown?” “Is
there a reason greater than it’s comfortable for you?” We could not come
up with a clear answer, other than we don’t think it is “just for us”.
Fast forward a few months to May 2017 and at the General Conference
of the Free Methodist Church in Canada we were challenged as local
churches to ask what was called the Big Strategic Question: What does
it look like for us as a church to accept responsibility (physical, mental,
emotional, and spiritual) for our community?
These two challenging questions (and others), have led to much prayer
and ongoing discussions about our vision and mission as a church. They
have stirred up a healthy sense of discontent and a desire to find answers
to these questions that fit who we are as a church and where God has
placed us. We recognize we can’t do everything - in fact we aren’t called
to that - but there are opportunities God has placed before us that we
feel may begin to answer these questions. Our heart is to see a holistic
ministry developed in the downtown core caring for peoples’ physical,
mental, emotional and spiritual needs. We desire to see people in our
neighbourhood come to wholeness in Christ in every area of their lives.
The vision for the ministry that we as a leadership team are proposing
may seem unconventional. It may feel risky to launch out into unfamiliar
territory. We acknowledge there are challenges - and yes, risks. We
also are convinced that the risks of doing nothing are even greater.
Whether this opportunity or another one - just maintaining the status quo
or serving ourselves is a recipe for a slow decline and eventual death
as a church. We don’t see ourselves taking that path. We envision the
possibilities of a ministry willing to try new things - not for the sake of
doing new things - but for the sake of reaching people that we will never
reach with traditional means. This is not about being comfortable - it is
about being faithful to the call of Jesus to make disciples.
I invite you to read carefully the documents related to the Downtown
Ministry Plan and Business Plan. Much thought and prayer has gone into
these. They are a work in progress and we invite your input and questions.
As we discuss these things at the AGM and in the weeks ahead let’s be
careful to lay aside our own convenience and agenda and instead desire
God’s will be done - “nothing more, nothing less, nothing else”.

Dear Lakeside Family
“After a quieter period during 2016-2017, the Africa Inland Mission staff is joyfully trying to keep up with the increase in
the number of full-term and short-term applications coming in. Colin and I are also keeping busy with our church here
as he is now serving as Director of International Ministries and doing well in his studies at Tyndale. Thank you LCC for
your continued love and support!
To our Lakeside Church Family
We are very thankful for your ongoing love, prayers and support for us personally and our ministry. Because of your
prayers and support we are able to share the Good News and the Love of Jesus to a hurting First Nations Community. We
are able to sow a seed and in faith want to trust that His word will not return empty, but will accomplish what He desires
and achieve the purpose for which He sent it!
Thank you so much for blessing us with your friendship!
Yours in Christ
Wellspring Foundation
Wellspring is passionate about real life change in all members of the Wellspring community, as we show the love
of Christ by empowering a new generation of leaders in Central and Eastern Africa and beyond. We believe we are
uniquely placed to be a catalyst for transforming education for hundreds of thousands of African children and fostering
vibrant communities that address poverty in all its forms.
Lakeside provides support each month for one classroom in Rwanda.
“Through prayer and worship I have been able to surrender much sin in my life, to walk in God’s
righteousness and glory. It is an absolute blessing, that I was fortunate to find such a sincere and
compassionate Christian fellowship, such as there is in this Lakeside Community Church. Thank you to
those who have encouraged and taught me to respond to God’s wonderful and encouraging Word. There
is just so much that words cannot express in becoming a new creation in Christ. I feel privileged to be a
disciple of Jesus.”
DEAR LAKESIDE COMMUNITY
CHURCH FAMILY:
Please find attached the proposed budget for 2018, which is compared to
last year’s budget as well as last year’s actual expenditures. Last year was
another year filled with God’s blessings, highlighted by your generous
monthly giving. I think you will agree that we have many reasons to give
God all the Praise and Glory for his financial provision and the open
hearts and hands of so many in our Church family that opened countless
opportunities to serve this Church, the Salmon Arm Community and so
many individuals locally and even in different places outside of Canada.
Highlights for 2017 included the intensified discernment of God’s will and
vision of how to make good use of the entrusted funds out of the Property
sale.
We continued with a stable core tithe of 10% to our parent church
organization (Free Methodist Church in Canada).
Each Sunday we see and hear a vivid Kids Zone being a vital part of our
Church.
Kids Zone and Lakeside Youth are currently sponsoring two children
with ICCM (International Child Care Ministries). The Youth is continuing to
sponsor Jeff in Haiti and Kids Zone is supporting a girl in the Philippines.
Through your participation, donations of cash and other items we were
able to ship a record number of 419 shoeboxes packed with love, to lovely
kids and in support of Operation Christmas Child. In addition, we raised
$3,245 to cover shipping costs.
For this year 2018, we are quite excited as Lakeside works together,
and continues to seek God’s direction and call as we are discerning the
reason for why we are downtown. We will continue to be supportive of the
efforts of the BCL-Team (The Refugee Committee with representatives
from Broadview Church, Crossroads Church & Lakeside Church) and their
effort to possibly bringing in another Refugee Family to Salmon Arm in the
future. We will continue to support our missionaries – Rachel Lawrance
(AIM), Marc Fromme (NAIM) ;) and the ministry of Wellspring to fund a
classroom in Rwanda.
Through the year there were several times of concern, because our
monthly giving didn’t line up with our Budget. I would like all of you to put
this ongoing concern into prayer. Please pray for God’s continued financial
provision for us as a church and his continued blessings. Please be also in
prayer about what God is asking you to do regarding your personal giving
towards this Church and for the ministry we are doing together.
The numbers on the next page are more than dollars and cents. They
represent your partnership in the Gospel not only here in Salmon Arm but
across Canada as we partner with FMCiC ministries and internationally
with Operation Christmas Child, ICCM, AIM and Wellspring. Looking
ahead let’s trust God and step out in faith, growing in generous and
consistent giving.
“I love Lakeside because I felt at home here from my very first Sunday not quite 4 years ago. We may be
small, but we have people who are mighty in prayer, abounding in practical acts of love, and passionate
for truth. We have people who are struggling and unsure of their commitment, but they are loved and
welcomed. We have loud, spontaneous people and quiet, deliberate people. We have ministry leaders who
pour themselves into service. We have a firm foundation and are building on it in growing layers of faith.
I love Lakeside because you are my family.”
~ N O R E E N S C H U L T E
“My time at Lakeside has been an incredible learning experience. I have always been a part of a larger
church congregation, and my eyes have been opened to the intensity and love required for a church to
exist. I have learned that the power of individual congregants contributing their time, finances, and
passion to make a smaller community operate is a remarkably beautiful thing. I have learned that
the value of one member of a small church is incomparable and invaluable. I have been changed by
witnessing this passion and contribution to the church, and as I enter into my future I will actively
participate in whichever church community I will find myself in. I see that I can make a difference in
my world by getting involved!”
~ A D A M K O N I N G
“God has really used “The Tangible Kingdom” Life Group study to speak to me and to challenge me in a
number of areas of my spiritual life. Most significantly, I feel like I am beginning to grasp the incredible
power of the Holy Spirit Who lives in me. Through heartfelt prayer, asking for the Spirit’s help, I am
experiencing a real peace in areas of my life that were causing anxiety. Instead of feeling apprehensive
about the decision to offer to God my plans in exchange for his plans, as we read about in “The Tangible
Kingdom”, I now feel excited about, and look forward to, opportunities that God opens up for me.”
~ K A R E N K O N O T O P S K I
“I am passionate about Operation Christmas Child. Sometimes I imagine how it must feel to never have
received a Christmas present. Preparing before the shoebox packing party is important to me because I
know that I am giving a present to a kid that has never received one before. The shoebox packing party
is fun because it’s like you’re almost in a mini shopping mall and you get to pick out what you want to
put in your box!”
K A R I S B O R S T E L ( K I D Z O N E S T U D E N T )
“Over my time at Lakeside I grew into the man I wanted to be. Through Freedom Session, I experienced
grace in tangible ways and understood the importance of vulnerability in forming community and saw
those same changes in our congregation. I was blessed by the friendships I made while also being
adopted as a brother, nephew, and uncle in our church family. Lakeside will always be a special place,
and I hope and pray that we would all step out in faith and act accordingly.”
