The King and Queen were great favorites in Honolulu society.
They entertained grandly and frequently. They gave musicals and
operas in which they participated as singers or actors.
He enjoyed horseback riding and excelled at cricket. He preferred
popular English writers such as Tennyson and Thackery
and was "forever quoting Shakespeare." He also knew the Bible
well and translated the Anglican Prayer Book into Hawaiian.
Yet, for all his brilliance and gifts, his character was somewhat
contradictory. He could be "intellectual and logical and he also
could be highly emotional and thrown into deep fits of melancholy."
The death of his four-year-old son shattered him completely. He
never recovered from the blow. After years of suffering from
nerve disorders and asthma, he died unexpectedly on November
30, 1863, in the arms of his wife and his father.
