27 INTOLERANCE
'1 am disappointed at the
Americans. They have no
manners, no politeness, not even
common civilities to a Stranger. "

These critical observations by the King are from an entry in
his published journal describing how he was treated by the conductor
of a train which he was riding en route to Washington
D.C. on a diplomatic mission with his brother Lot and Dr.
Judd. He was· asked to leave his seat by the conductor who, in
the King's words,
"probably [had] taken me for
somebody's servant, just because I
had a darker skin than he had.
Confounded fool. "
