CORPORATE GOVERNANCE WORKSHOP AT MARRIOT HOTEL, KIGALI February 23, 2018 BACKGROUND The International Finance Corporation (IFC) seeks to promote sustainable private sector investment in developing countries and it has identified that there is a need for adequate emphasis on improved corporate governance practices. Therefore, the East Africa Corporate Governance Program (EAfCGP) has been specifically designed to improve firm performance and increase the ability of markets and firms in the East Africa region to attract and retain investment by promoting the adoption of Corporate Governance (CG) best practices and standards in line with local and regional priorities. Often individuals mistakenly believe that CG is only applicable for large, typically publicly-held companies. Introducing good CG practices brings important changes to organizations of any size. Professionals like Accountants, Lawyers, Auditors and company Secretaries should play a big role in not only raising awareness on the standards and practices of good corporate governance but also in ensuring that the firms they serve practice good corporate governance. Good governance helps businesses operate more efficiently, it signficantly increases their ability to attract capital and it improves their relationships with stakeholders. Well-governed companies, independently of their size, therefore are more likely to be sustainable in today’s increasingly competitive environment. THE TRAINING PROGRAM AND LEARNING OBJECTIVES This One-day workshop has been designed specifically for members of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Rwanda (iCPAR) with the purpose of raising awareness on the principles and best practices of corporate governance, and to provide participants with practical guidance that will allow them to identify priority governance improvement most beneficial for their specific companies. This highly interactive training will also address common challenges faced by persons who provide professional services to companies. CERTIFICATES Certificates of attendance will be awarded to all participants who attend and participate in all sessions of the training program. For members, seven (7) CPD – Continuous Professional Development hours will also be awarded.
