on the Block
by Susan Wong
As a young child, I was always fearful yet fascinated with
the Lion Dance Parade held in Chinatown every year.
My father has been a long-standing member of the Hon
Sing Athletic Club so we always attended the parade. I
remember the lion was tall, bright and ferocious looking.
However, I could never figure out why the lion always ate
the lettuce hung up in store fronts. Now I understand it’s a
ritual that will bring your family or business good fortune
in the upcoming Lunar <strong>New</strong> Year.
My siblings and I never took too much interest in kung-fu
classes or <strong>Chinese</strong> traditional dancing. Dad tried many
times to recruit us, but we always said we were content
just watching. Dad was really good. He’s played the drum,
lion danced and performed martial arts. You could tell
he enjoyed it. His martial arts also came in handy when
he used to catch shoplifters at our grocery store in Mount
Pleasant in the 80s (it was exactly like those kung-fu
movies!). Now in retirement, Dad strolls along with the
younger group but occasionally helps with the cymbals
and always waves to the crowd. My two boys find it “cool”
to see their Grandpa Wong in the parade.
Although we didn’t find lion dancing a big deal, the
interest and talent for it may have skipped a generation!
Including my brother’s three young boys, there are
five boys in the family, and my sister has two girls. The
boys have taken a genuine interest in the whole <strong>Chinese</strong>
tradition. So my Dad bought a lion head, exactly like the
ones in the parade, but just the right size for a four- to
six-year-old child. He also got a <strong>Chinese</strong> drum with two
wooden sticks. Soon after, someone also got the boys
golden cymbals.
Most Sundays at our family dinners, you will find them
taking turns holding the lion head, drumming and playing
the cymbals. Sometimes there will be one member
Collingwood Baptist Celebrates
100 Years! by Janet O’Leary
Church picnic, July 2011.
Connections. Connections to the
past, connections to the future.
This is what the 100th Anniversary
Celebration of Collingwood Baptist
Church was all about. “Celebrating
100 years of God’s faithfulness”
was our motto. The celebration was
held the weekend of November 11 to
13, 2011. We were delighted to see
acquaintances renewed as former
members came back to greet each
other.
History
At the very beginning of the church,
June 6, 1909, a group of six met
in the home of Mr. and Mrs. B.
Connacher. Rev. Redmond of South
Hill Baptist held services on Sunday
afternoons. On November 12,
1910, 24 people organized to form
Collingwood Baptist Church.
The first church building on
Monmouth Street at the current
location, 4847 Joyce Street, north
of the Skytrain, was built for $1,400
plus the purchase of the two lots,
one of which cost $1,000. On July 9,
1911 the building was dedicated. On
July 16, 1911 the first Sunday School
was held and on October 3, 1917, the
first boys’ club was established.
Many changes took place in the
building over the years, including
beautification and renovations to
accommodate the growing numbers
of Sunday School children. In
1953 the basement of the present
auditorium was excavated to create
Sunday School space. In 1957 the
church had a mortgage-burning
ceremony and subsequently made
several renovations to celebrate our
50th year in 1961. June 5 to 8, 1986,
the church again recognized their
heritage “Celebrating 75 years of
God’s faithfulness.”
Celebrations
Over the years the anniversary
celebrations have taken place at
various times of the year, according
to various beginning highlights. In
July 10, 2011, the church gathered at
the park for one of our potluck picnics
and acknowledged the beginning of the
Sunday School 100 years earlier.
The 2011 celebration of Collingwood
Baptist Church looked back at some
highlights at our 100th Anniversary
Celebration through pictures and words.
We were challenged to pass on the torch
as we looked to the future through special
speaker Bruce Christianson, and our
current pastor Rick Powell. During the
years, from the past to the present, 11
pastors have preached the timeless oldfashioned
gospel. We heard accounts of
changed lives and families that became
quickly included in the life of the church
as the good news of the gospel spread
from family to family and friend to friend
through children’s programs and adult
services.
On the evening of November 11th, we had
both a joyful and solemn service as we
reflected on the meaning of celebrating
one hundred years. A highlight: Vic
Nordstrom told a compelling story about
how he came into the fold by turning
to Christ from living a wild life with no
interest in God. Connections made new
life a reality.
It was a dark, rainy, cold day outside on
November 12, 2011 when brave people
walked in from the street to receive a
warm welcome in the comfort of a living
room setting decorated with various
antiques including tables and chairs, lace
table cloths, a treadle sewing machine
and a gum ball machine. Five cents for
a bubble gum anyone? The event took
place in the context of an old-fashioned
carnival theme with old-fashioned games
outside and sweet treats on sticks and hot
chocolate inside. People could get their
pictures taken with a top hat on their
head. We became acquainted with what
was happening in Vancouver in the year
1911 through a descriptive photo display.
The day ended with a variety show, an
international food fair, a drama team
and teaching from the Holy Scriptures by

ended on Sunday, November 13th
with a special luncheon and music
by songwriter Carola Meerkerk.
Today
Collingwood Baptist is a thriving
multi-ethnic church that seeks
to keep the Holy Bible central to
our activities. We have a number
of ministries including summer
performing kung-fu and giving off an
“Ah-Ha!” after each strike.
Actually, they do a great rendition
of the whole process. As the drums
begin to roll, the lion head lowers; the
drum beat picks up and the lion begins
moving swiftly to the beat! They even
have green lego pieces in place of the
lettuce. Grandpa also gave them some
tips on how to drum. Watching the
boys perform is really quite wonderful
and entertaining.
My youngest, Adam, has a little trouble
keeping up with the older boys but
loves it too. He religiously watches
a lion dance DVD with his paternal
Grandpa Liew. You will find him
bobbing his head and moving his little
body to the theme song to “Once Upon
in China” featuring celebrity Jet Li,
who plays a historical martial artist
named Wong Fei Hong. Every time
Adam spots a bright colourful lion with
a long train, he slurs, “Chiiineeezee
Lie-On!”
This year we will again follow
tradition. Every Sunday after the
lunar <strong>New</strong> Year, rain, snow or shine
we attend the <strong>Chinese</strong> <strong>New</strong> Year
Parade in Chinatown. There’s always
daycamps, Sunday School, Sunshine
Singers, music worship teams, small
groups, men’s group, Women’s
Mission Circle, girls’ and boys’ clubs
and a newly added focus group for
parents called Dine and Discuss.
Our main worship and teaching
meeting is on Sunday mornings
at 10:30 am with Sunday School
for the children during the adult
service. Check out our website at
A Day Off in January
by Robert F. Edwards
My next day off in January;
I’m going to do exactly what
it says … “Have a day off,”
from all kinds of work, not
just being away from the
job.
Here are my ideas for that
day off. I will start the day
by having a good hearty
bowl of porridge or other
hot cereal breakfast. After a
few cups of tea (in my case),
Merry Christmas from Banana Grove
 Party Trays Made-To-Order
 Assorted cheese,
fruit and deli meat
I’ll check out how the
weather is, and hope for
a fair day.
I’m going to start by
phoning some friends at
short notice and see if any
of them want to meet me
for lunch. What is exciting
about being in Collingwood
is there are so many unique
little restaurants to go to
that serve delicious food.
RENFREW COLLINGWOOD COMMUNITY NEWS
After lunch, I’m going to
ask my friends if they’d be
interested in going for a
walk in the park. Around
Collingwood, there are some
of the most enjoyable parks
One of my favourites is
Central Park. It is always
interesting, if not exciting,
to see how Mother Nature
handles winter and all her
little friends in the parks.
After an enjoyable walk in
the park with my friends,
I’m going to entice them
to join me for a nice hot
beverage and a tasty dessert
at a local coffee shop.
Returning home, I’m going to
look for entertainment. I will
be happy for anything from
a sports event,
the theatre,
or maybe
just going
Metrotown for a
good movie.
I sincerely hope
one of your day
is truly a day off
and not just the
statutory time
away from the
up being filled
with the endless
chores of dayto-day
C3: A Youth-Driven Event
by Kaitlyn Fung
Many important events occurred last
month, and the exciting educational
event on December 9 was one of them.
Students from Windermere Secondary
hosted the third annual climate change
conference, or, as we call it, C3, which
this year focused on youth leadership
and engagement on issues related to
climate change.
More than 300 people from over
17 Lower Mainland schools and
organizations across Vancouver attended
the meticulously planned event, which
featured Seth Klein, director of the
Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives
office in Vancouver, as the keynote
speaker.
The conference began with an exciting
video call to members of the Canadian
Youth Delegation (CYD) attending the
UN climate talks in Durban, South
Africa. The CYD made its own impact
regarding Canada’s record on climate
change when six youth stood and
turned their backs on Peter Kent, the
environmental minister of Canada,
during his speech. The Skype video
call included a discussion Canada’s
worsening reputation in terms of
environmental inaction and the
development of the tar sands, for which
Canada was awarded the colossal fossil
award for the third year running.
Attendees then headed to workshops
to learn about topics such as fracking,
oil tankers on BC’s coast and tar sand
developments such as the Enbridge
pipeline.
The highlight was during “action time,”
when all attendees came together and
participated in various activities. One
example was the tongue-in-cheek
“Operation Oil Change” campaign
currently being run by the Canadian
Youth Climate Coalition in which
students s letters to the Prime Minister
with spare change inside envelopes
asking to “buy back Canada’s climate
policy” from the oil industry.
January 2012
Action time also featured a petition to
support a ban on crude oil tankers in
BC and stand in solidarity with over
130 BC First Nations communities who
have signed the historic Save the Fraser
Declaration.
The Save the Fraser Declaration states
that First Nations who sign it “will not
allow the proposed Enbridge Northern
Gateway Pipelines, or similar Tar Sands
projects, to cross our lands, territories,
and watersheds, or the ocean migration
routes of Fraser Salmon.”
The petition in support of the Save
the Fraser Declaration has the
overwhelming support of the youth who
attended C3, and it is also supported
by MP Don Davies, who attended the
conference and promised to return the
petition to parliament.
The students who organized the
petition are determined to reach 10,000
signatures before the Earth Day Parade
in April. There, the students are set on
presenting the completed petition to
Don Davies, who would then be able to
carry out his commitment to bring it to
parliament.
The success of C3 can be measured
in many ways, but the most inspiring
measurement may be the number of
youth who attended and demonstrated
their concern about their future.
Climate change is a commonplace
topic these days, but it is not a mere
trend. It will endure for as long as it
continues to exist, and for as long as
concerned people, especially youth,
keep on demanding that their voices
on the matter be heard. We hope this
conference will have served as just
one of many powerful catalysts for the
generation of sustainability that the
youth of today are striving to achieve.
Seniors and Students Create Gingerbread Houses and
Memories Together
by Kat Cureton
On Monday December 12th, seniors and students from
the Adult Basic Education (ABE) program housed out of
CNH took on a unique challenge together: building and
decorating gingerbread houses.
It was no easy feat to determine the correct thickness for
icing and the perfect pressure that
would get those gingerbread walls to
stick together.
Decorating was the fun part and a
unique opportunity for many to show
their creative side. Ten gingerbread
houses were created and used as
centerpieces on December 15th at the
annual Festive Lunch.
Marilina Musto-Bonilla is the program director as well as one of
the instructors at Intention Martial Arts Academy (IMAA). Marilina,
along with her husband Marlon, work to empower people as they
themselves have been empowered by the journey of martial
arts. “The focus at Intention Martial Arts Academy is character
development with martial arts as the medium,” says Marilina.
The character education at IMAA is by no means a filler for martial
arts classes, but a great enhancement to them. IMAA’s blended
martial arts curriculum provides a solid foundation in Shotokan karate,
with influences from Tae Kwon Do, boxing, modern Ninjutsu, and both
classical and sport Jujitsu. Some of their training methods include
boxing drills—shadowboxing and pad drills, repetitions of kicks,
punches and combinations, rolling and grappling, vital point striking,
traditional and non-traditional katas (self-performing) reality-based
hand-to-hand combat practice, stand-up Tae-Kwon-Do-style sparring,
and modern-day weapons defense training. Fitness is also a very
important part of the curriculum.
With a BA in linguistics from SFU, an education degree from UBC, a
black belt in Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido, and a purple belt in modern
Ninjutsu, Sensei Musto-Bonilla is a student of the journey of life and
of the martial arts. She enjoys attending seminars and continually
works to improve her ability to help her students reach their goals.
“People should not need permission to reach his/her potential or to be
amazing. At IMAA, our students are asked to reach as far as they can
and then just a bit further ... and then just a bit further. Their progress is
and always will be our priority. We will do what we can to help them learn
in the best way possible and we hope they do the same.”
A former elementary school teacher, Marilina felt that there was not
enough time to really focus on character development. “The whole
mind-body learning that occurs on the martial arts floor is unlike any
other. In addition to the physical benefits it offers, it increases focus and
motivation as well as courage and compassion. Martial arts allows you to
be mentally and physically stronger then you could have ever imagined. It
has given me the confidence to believe in myself as a woman with many
roles.”
In addition to her roles with IMAA, and her role as mother of their
18-month-old, Marilina enjoys writing prose about life and her own self
discoveries. She is inspired by nature and by other people’s simple
acts of courage. Not afraid to take on the occasional amateur stand-up
comedy gig, Marilina believes that being able to master an art form or a
skill is important, but being on the journey of self-mastery is much more
important. “I welcome you and hope your journey at Intention Martial Arts
Academy is a meaningful and life-changing one.”
RENFREW COLLINGWOOD COMMUNITY NEWS January 2012
The Other Guy’s Opinion
January’s Resolutions for
Saving Money
Now it’s a <strong>New</strong> Year and the time for
resolutions of losing those 10 pounds that
we welcomed during the Christmas season
or paying down the debts we accumulated
in the festivals season is now at hand.
I would like to share with you some ideas
and solutions that I am putting into effect.
Number one, my wallet is only going to
have money and my debit card. As far as
all other credit cards or incentive plans;
they’re going deep down in one of the
drawers where I will have a hard time
getting to. If I only have money and debit
cards when I go shopping, I can only buy
what I have cash on hand for, either in my
wallet or in the bank. No credit cards.
My next resolution is to avoid the
shopping malls during the clearing sales
on merchandise. They are not deals or
exceptional values unless I really need the
item. If I buy any of these items that I or
my family don’t desperately need; all I’m
doing is helping the merchant get rid of
inventory he doesn’t want and the banks
to receive money for their services. It is
no deal for me but just helping operations
that don’t need any help.
I’m also determined when I go grocery
shopping to make sure I have a list on
hand. I have totally committed myself to
buying just what is on the list. In the past
I’ve gone grocery shopping when there’s
been a special or maybe a treat for my
family. I have not hesitated to put the
items into my basket. A big mistake when
my cupboards or my fridge (and maybe
yours) are full of food. All we have done is
become a mini-warehouse for the grocery
store. We have tied up valuable money
that we need for other things.
One of the last things that I am
determined to make happen, and hope
it may help you readers, is when we are
preparing meals: Try and make the right
quantity of food, either for ourselves or for
our entire family. When we have leftovers
from a delightful meal, in many cases,
these leftovers end up in the garbage.
What a waste. Not only of food that other
people are starving for, but my money and
yours are being thrown away.
I sincerely hope that some of the things
I’m going to adopt with my <strong>New</strong> Year’s
resolutions may help you in your <strong>New</strong>
Year as well. It’s always the little things
that add up to making a difference.
Thelma Bureyko: Common-sense Leader Takes
Care of Business by Rania Hatzioannou
10th in a series
Thelma Bureyko humbly recalls
taking a no-nonsense approach as
she presided over the Collingwood
Neighbourhood House nearly two
decades ago. She did what she did
because things had to get done,
and not because there was a great
scheme or plan in place.
Thelma was born in the 1940s
near Nanaimo and East 37th
Avenue. She attended Tecumseh
Elementary School and Gladstone
Secondary School before moving
to the Northwest Territories for a
few years, then settling in Ontario
for most of her 20s and early 30s.
She returned to the Collingwood
neighbourhood as a single mother
with two children.
Being a single mom, she registered
her children in a variety of
activities including the Boy
Scouts and evening activities at
the then-storefront Collingwood
Neighbourhood House.
Thelma join the board of directors at
CNH to meet people “and because
I heard there was food at each
meeting,” she jokes. “I didn’t bring
any special set of skills,” she adds,
“just common sense.” She forgets
to mention her organizational skills
and that she was able to take the
minutes, balance books and type.
When asked about the discussions
that took place back then, Thelma
says, “I don’t remember the
discussions. Somebody started
talking, then we made it happen.”
The important thing was to get
everyone to participate.
Getting people motivated is always
a challenge. They need to care. For
Thelma, it started with the Renfrew
Ravine. When Thelma and a small
group of neighbours gathered to
clean the ravine, neighbours saw
what was happening and came
out to help. When someone cares,
others follow. “We knew then that if
people cared about where they lived,
others will come on board.”
That was a momentous time
for Thelma. “We had everyone
involved: the Boy Scouts, the Girl
Guides, you name it.”
When asked if her years with CNH
were a meaningful experience, Thelma
gives a shy giggle and, with humility,
responds, “You just take a job and do
it!”
“There are two important lessons to
teach a child: the ability to read and
the ability to listen to the other guy.
Instead of talking about your own
problems, it’s important to listen to
other people and you’ll get the help
you need. Tell the truth and in a nice
manner.”
Thelma’s granny came to Canada in
1910 and felt that she was given a gift
just by being here. It was important
for her to give back, and that message
carried on with Thelma.
Thelma knew that CNH was a great
place for her children, and she wanted
to give back. She joined the board
of directors while CNH was situated
in a storefront on Kingsway. “We
were a dynamic community then:
TerryTayler, Paula Carr and I.” The
team worked hard on issues ranging
from rats, to Norquay, to Renfrew
Ravine. “We even got an award from
the Mayor,” she says, still humble
and proud. What a great achievement
for a woman who was scared being
president of the local Parents’
Association for fear of speaking in
front of others. “Someone had to
remind me that nobody’s out to get
you.”
There were a lot of diverse cultures
in Collingwood even back then.
Sometimes things had to be watered
down in order to be inclusive. “I would
drive my daughter and her friends
somewhere, and the car would be
packed with all ethnicities,” Thelma
recalls. “Children are tolerant.”
“I taught my children what my
granny taught me: there are good
people and there are not-good
people. Their skin colour is not
important.”
During those busy years of helping
with the Boy Scouts and sitting on
the CNH board, Thelma met her
current husband through those
activities. Over the years, she
celebrated her 50th birthday at
CNH, and held her son’s wedding
in there, too.
13
Thelma Bureyko was the MC for
the Collingwood Neighbourhood
House groundbreaking in the
mid-1990s.
Today Thelma lives outside
Vancouver, volunteers with her
local stroke clinic, tutors, and
spends time doing her art. She can
vaguely recall the brown dress she
wore for the groundbreaking of
the current CNH building on Joyce
Street, when she served as MC for
the event. That lack of recollection
is just part of her practical way of
looking at things: get things done
and move on.
our neighbourhood grew, please
Learning to live in Canada can be a
big challenge for immigrant youth.
Trying to learn a new language and
culture, settle into a new school
and get used to a new home can
lead to youth feeling confused and
overwhelmed. Parents may also feel
overwhelmed, not only with their own
challenges in getting settled but also
with trying to help their child or teen
learn to live in Canada.
There is help available.
While Collingwood Neighbourhood
House offers free, individualized
help for all immigrants, it offers some
specialized help for youth. Youth may
meet one-on-one with CNH’s friendly
Youth Settlement Program Leader,
Jennifer Stanford. During January and
February, Jennifer is also offering free
workshops for immigrant youth on a
variety of topics aimed at helping youth
learn some life skills in particularly
challenging areas.
Some of the workshops will include
youth or adults who have faced some
of the issues the workshops address;
the youth or adults will be able to talk
about their experiences, how they got
past the challenge and suggest how
immigrant youth could avoid stumbling
into similar experiences.
Fire Hall No.15 Set to Open Early 2012 by John Mendoza
The built heritage of Renfrew-
Collingwood becomes a little more
richer in the new year as Fire Hall
Number 15 opens after an extensive
restoration.
Located on the east side of Renfrew
Branch library at Nootka Street
and 22nd Avenue, Fire Hall No.
15 is one of two Edwardian-style
firehouses in all of Vancouver
and is a rare heritage landmark in
Renfrew-Collingwood. One of its
signature features is the 40-foot
hose tower that can be seen from
many directions. Its heritage value
was so important, it made Heritage
Vancouver’s list (at number seven)
of top-10 endangered heritage sites
for 2009.
Restoration and refurbishment of
Fire Hall No. 15 was handled by the
architectural firm Hughes Condon
Marler Architects (HCMA), who
also designed the award-winning
Vancouver Public Library’s
Renfrew Branch located across
the street. Together, it’s another
pocket of architectural excellence
in Renfrew-Collingwood.
In celebration of Fire Hall No. 15’s
re-entry into the community life of
Renfrew-Collingwood, Gabe Roder,
the public relations and media
liaison for Vancouver Fire and
Rescue Services, answered some
questions about the new facility.
Q: What’s the status of Fire Hall
No. 15? When will it open?
A: Near completion. Set to open
early 2012.
Q: What will it mean for the
average citizen of Renfrew-
Collingwood to have Firehall No. 15
restored and refurbished?
A: The residents of Renfrew-
Collingwood will have a new fire
hall, with a heritage look, that will
once again have two fire trucks to serve
them.
Q: Fire Hall No. 15 is listed as a postdisaster
facility―what does that mean
to the average resident of the area?
A: All fire halls are post-disaster
facilities based on the function that
fire fighters will need to carry out after
a disaster. That being said, they will
not be places of refuge for citizens,
as they will be empty, and we do not
community plan for residents in your
community after a disaster.
Q: How will the new fire hall be
beneficial to local residents and city
fire fighters?
A: The new fire hall will have a
community room where fire fighters
will be able to conduct CPR and
first-aid training for the public. We
will also conduct cholesterol and blood
pressure clinics for the public. This hall
will house a satellite Fire Prevention
Office, where four Fire Prevention
Officers will serve the community out
of this location. The fire hall will also
offer a classroom and gym facilities for
fire fighters.
2011: Renfrew-Collingwood’s Year in Heritage
The year 2011 has been a busy one for Renfrew-Collingwood when it came to
heritage preservation. The issue of heritage preservation came up regularly in the
pages of the RCC <strong>New</strong>s in the past year, and with good reason. The following quote
was found on the 2009 Top Ten Heritage Sites list for Fire Hall Number 15: “Although
Collingwood-Renfrew is one of Vancouver’s oldest areas, little remains of its earliest
settlement.” It’s more important than ever to preserve and maintain the built
heritage that still exists in Renfrew-Collingwood.
January 2011: After appearing
for numerous years on the Top Ten
Endangered Heritage Sites list sponsored
by Heritage Vancouver, Vancouver city
council approves a plan to save and
restore Fire Hall No. 15, built in 1913.
February 2011: Heritage Vancouver
releases its Top Ten Endangered
Heritage Sites list for 2011, and three
buildings make it to the list: Guy Carleton
Elementary School/Carleton Hall (#1),
Collingwood Branch library (#7), and the
2400 Motel (#10). The last two sites on the
list were built after World War II. The 2400
Motel is a fine example of an auto court
designed in the “Streamline Moderne”
manner and Collingwood Branch library
is one of the area’s rare examples of 1950s
Modernist architecture.
August 2011: In a project designed
to celebrate Vancouver’s 125th
birthday, two sites in Renfrew-
Collingwood—Collingwood Public
Library (#76) and Collingwood
Neighbourhood House (#120)—make
the list of Vancouver’s 125 Places That
Matter, sponsored by the Vancouver
Heritage Foundation.
September 2011: Green Thumb
Theatre announces their move into
the 1896 Carleton Hall Schoolhouse
and an adjacent building from 1908.
The building’s future had been doubt
after an arson fire in 2008 severely
damaged the roof. Green Thumb
Theatre launches “The Schoolhouse
Project” to raise the $1.2 million
needed to help restore the building.
