8 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 14 February, 2018 New development application plan s lodged for Balmain Leagues Club The Balmain Leagues Club and Grand Rozelle have announced a plan to build a new leagues club at the Tigers spiritual home on Victoria Road, Rozelle. The new plan was announced in a statement from the club this week. “Balmain Leagues Club has been made aware that preliminary advice (a ‘pre-DA’) for the redevelopment of the Club site at Rozelle has been provided to Inner West Council by Grand Rozelle,” the statement said. “The proposal includes residential, commercial and retail space in addition to a 2,200m square space for a new Balmain Leagues Club. “This preliminary step in the DA process allows Council to assess the proposal prior to designs being completed, allowing issues to be brought to attention before a final application is submitted.” Balmain Tigers spokesman Dr Leslie Glen thanked Tigers fans for their past support and said he looked forward to working with Grand Rozelle. “The Balmain Leagues Club site on Victoria Road, Rozelle, formerly owned by Rozelle Village Pty Ltd and Pacific Link Investments Pty Ltd has been sold and the Club looks forward to working with the new owners, Grand Rozelle Pty Ltd, to return our Club to its historic home after an extremely arduous eight year long exile,” he said. “Discussions with the new owners have been very cordial and positive concerning the club’s future and assurances of their support have been received. “The Board of Directors will discuss the impact of the sale and a further report will be released our members as soon as practicable. “We appreciate the loyal support and trust you have given us over many years. “It continues to be at the foremost of our minds to honour the legacy of those who established Balmain Tigers in 1908 and to all those who guided it through its long and distinguished history.” There have been several attempts to restore the Balmain Leagues club since 2010 when proposed developments of five and 11 storeys were refused by the state government’s Joint Regional Planning Panel due to size, design and traffic impacts. Rozelle Village Pty Ltd, then submitted a new proposal for two structures at 26 storeys and 32 storeys, which was not supported by the Department of Planning or the former Leichhardt Council. It then submitted a revised proposal which reduced the building to 24 storeys but again met with opposition from the Council. Frustrated by the court and council system, Rozelle Village withdrew from the project and the Leagues Club site has remained vacant and destitute. Wednesday 14 February, 2018 THE WEEKLY TIMES 9 Council acts, as tensions reach boiling point in Bonnefin Road A NIGHTMARE parking problem on Bonnefin Road looks likely to be resolved through the intervention of Hunters Hill Council. Tensions have reached boiling point on the narrow. winding road due to the problem of cars, trucks and trades vehicles parked on footpaths, across driveways and on the street where they block the road. The Weekly Times can confirm that some locals have called the police to book neighbours’ cars on footpaths because they block pedestrian access and force young mothers with prams to walk on the road. More than one tradesman parked on the footpath told The Weekly Times the only other alternative is to park on the kerbside, blocking access to garbage trucks, residents’ cars and emergency vehicles. Hunters Hill Group Manager for Development and Regulatory Control, Steve Kourepis, confirmed the information given to this newspaper and that an emergency meeting of residents was held on Wednesday to find a solution. “Council acknowledges the issues, the fact that parking on the footpath is illegal and that emergency vehicles and our own waste removal trucks have had difficulty getting through,” he said. “We commissioned an engineers report in December, we’ve put up options, we’ve given residents an opportunity to comment and councillors have walked the road and hosted a workshop and now we have a way to go forward.” Seven options put by residents emerged from the workshop. They are shared zone parking, one-way traffic conditions, one side of the road only parking, staggered parking, road widening, a residents-only parking scheme and on footpath parking with no enforcement. “The on footpath parking with no enforcement is, in fact, illegal,” Mr Kourepis said. “We are now going to bring the proposals back to a council meeting and all those (residents) who attended the workshop will be notified.” Mayor Mark Bennett has applauded councillors and staff for their proactive role as well as residents who attended the workshop. The Weekly Times acknowledges footpath parking problems occur in other streets and that these problems have increased in the last decade. One local senior citizen said it is a sign of the times. “Why some mothers feel a need to park their big SUVs on our footpath or across our driveway when they drop their children off to school, when the school is a few yards up the road from where they live, staggers belief ,” he said. Residents will hold a public meeting at Hunters Hill Town Hall this Tuesday night, February 20 from 7 pm. **** A COUNCIL JUNKET was shut down by councillors in Hunters Hill on Monday night. Councillors voted by six votes to one to replace their annual workshop at a plush city venue with a simple workshop at the Town Hall or other local meeting place. “Venue hire, accommodation in the CBD and dinner at a restaurant is a considerable expense,” Deputy Mayor Ross Williams said. “And from what I can see, our budget is out of control at the moment.” Mayor Mark Bennett rejected claims Hunters Hill’s budget is out of control but supported the motion to scrap the junket. Money saved will go to the council’s local grants fund. **** A CONTROVERSIAL proposal to trap pet cats in wildlife protection areas and fine owners hundreds of dollars to get them back was deferred by Hunters Hill councillors on Monday night. Councillors will now study a new report on wildlife protection areas in Boronia Park and Buffalo Creek Reserve - submitted by the council’s wildlife expert Jacqui Vollmer - which acknowledges cat owners’ concerns. “Council acknowledges there will be initial difficulties as cat owners adjoining bushland adjust to their new responsibilities,” Ms Vollmer advised councillors. “This issue will now be addressed through a targeted education program that provides strategies for adjusting cats to an indoor environment.” The education campaign is also expected to focus on the risk to domestic cats in bushland areas, particularly from feral foxes and vermin eradication measures. Hunters Hill General Manager Barry Smith has requested clearly defined boundary maps for the proposed wildlife protection areas.
