Kitten is named in honour of

the brave Ukrainian struggle

This week’s Cat Of The Week has been

named after Ukraine’s capital city.

“Our kitten Kyiv has named in honor of the Ukrainian

people who are putting up such a brave fight for their

lives in Kyiv,” Jonine from Gladesville’s World League

for Protection of Animals Adoption Centre said.

“Amazing little Kyiv is likewise putting up a very tenacious

fight for life after he was dumped in a small

air tight container at the bottom of our donation bin

last week.

“After being found he has been lovingly fed with

syringes of formula around the clock but at only one

week of age this tiny kitten is so helpless and venerable.

“He is an enthusiastic feeder who sleeps a lot but

he does try to stumble around and explore at feeding

time.”

Little Kyiv needs a loving owner who can take on his

brave struggle with him.

“His chances of survival are not great but be assured

we are doing all we can for this little hero and we assure

readers Kyiv will not be killed.”

Anyone who can help little Kyiv in any way is urged

to phone Jonine on 0409 741 414.

“In spite of numerous appeals for essential information

about Kyiv, the coward who dumped him has

shamefully not helped and we not been able to find

a suitable lactating mother cat to help nourish him.”

God at the top of our list

A priest friend of mine

recently shared with me

this insightful story when

he visited a lady in her

home, she said;

“I know it’s important

to keep God’s word but I

really don’t need to go to

church to do that.”

My friend without hesitation

replied;

“I wish that I could

be that strong in doing

God’s will without needing

to go to church.”

This was not the response

that this lady

was expecting to hear

and she quickly changed

the subject to her family.

It is interesting in life as

to how many people (me

included) have a written

Six lucky TWT readers have won Reserve

are to do each day.

For example, what

type of groceries we will

buy, making an appointment

for a medical procedure

or remembering

to contact someone on

their birthday.

Yet I often wonder how

many people have on

the top of their list each

day to give God time

in personal prayer and

communal prayer each

week at their church.

The important point

to remember is that if

we have God at the top

of our list how often the

other routine things in

our list will happen so

much better.

Jesus of Nazareth had

something to say about

the importance of making

time with God in

these words;

“Watch and pray that

you will not fall into

temptation as the spirit

is willing but the flesh is

weak.” ( Matthew Chapter

26 verse 41).

PM’s Damascus rail

conversion doesn’t wash

Dear Sir,

Scott Morrison’s

sudden election-eve

interest in rail is about

as genuine as his sudden

interest in the

Cronulla Sharks after

he won preselection

for the seat of Cook.

This Federal Government

has had nine years

to invest in better rail infrastructure,

and to provide

people with transport

options to reduce

their reliance on imported

fuel. They have done

absolutely nothing.

For Scott Morrison to

miraculously discover

rail now just adds salt to

the wounds of commuters,

and highlights his

chronic inability to plan

for the future.

The reported $1 billion

upgrade to the rail corridor

between Sydney

and Newcastle does

not appear to make any

sense and has come out

of the blue – without any

planning or consultation.

Spending a billion dollars

on extra tracks at

Wyong will make little if

any difference to travel

times between Sydney

and Newcastle, as the

notoriously slow sections

of the route are

further south between

Hornsby and Gosford.

This announcement

appears to be more

about buying votes in

the marginal seat of Dobell

than about genuine

improvements to the rail

network.

A real plan to improve

inter-city rail would involve

identifying a new

purpose-built railway

line for fast trains, as

was proposed by the

High Speed Rail Advisory

Group – a body

that this government

abolished.

As usual, Scott Morrison

is all spin and no

substance. Australians

deserve better.

MELROSE PARK

New research reveals

saddening stories

New research conducted

by the Centre

of Perinatal Excellence

(COPE) reveals

saddening stories

from hopeful, expectant,

and new parents

about negative experiences

at each stage of

the journey to parenthood

– and the impact

of those on their lives

and wellbeing.

Every year, 300,000

women give birth in this

country, and behind

that statistic are tens of

thousands of stories of

hidden distress.

Around 15% of couples

experience infertility.

Many describe it as

a physical and emotional

rollercoaster with

adverse impacts on

relationships, financial

security and mental

health.

Pregnancy can be far

from the glowing experience

often portrayed.

Prolonged and severe

morning sickness,

negative body image,

family violence, anxiety

and depression are just

some of the challenges

faced in pregnancy.

Miscarriage and stillbirth

are more common

than realised, leaving

people shattered and

heartbroken.

Birth trauma is underestimated,

with the

impact lasting for years.

The trauma can be magnified

by the words spoken

by health professionals

in the moment

that are never forgotten.

Professionals take heed!

Alarmingly, 75% of

parents describe emotional

and mental distress

in their first year of

parenting. Severe sleep

deprivation, relationship

tension and loneliness

contribute to poor mental

health and can trigger

terrifying thoughts,

outbursts of rage and

postnatal anxiety and

depression.

Due to high levels of

stigma and social pressure,

parents hide challenges

from others for

fear of judgement and

even worry about having

children removed from

their care.

This only exacerbates

the impacts on mental

health.

The findings emphasise

the critical need for

routine, universal, mental

health screening of all

hopeful, expectant and

new parents, to identify

distress early, and ensure

timely referral.

When it comes to education,

the current narrow

focus on post-natal

depression and anxiety

is too little, too late.

New approaches must

offer more comprehensive

information on the

broader range of challenges

at these vulnerable

life-stages and

address the stigma that

exists. See cope.org.au/

Council rejects Gladesville reserve synthetic turf

☐ Gladesville Reserve

A proposed synthetic turf football pitch

at Gladesville Reserve has been removed

for consideration - but not prohibited -

Hunter’s Hill councillors resolved during

last Monday night’s council meeting.

Synthetic turf for the pitch used by the

700-member All Saints Soccer Club had

been proposed under a $2 million state government

grant to upgrade the “poor condition”

of the playing surface which is regarded

by parents, players and visiting teams to

be unusable in wet weather.

Councillors voted to amend the draft Henley

Precinct Open Space Plan of Management

to remove the (proposed) use of synthetic

turf other than for cricket pitches.

The council’s decision responds to feedback

made during a recent public meeting

at the Henley Bowling Club where community

speakers opposed synthetic turf due to

its cost and alleged “micro plastic” environmental

hazards.

A draft motion by Deputy Mayor Elizabeth

Krassoi to “prohibit” synthetic turf was replaced

with the word “remove” after Liberal

Clr Tatyana Virgara argued synthetic turf

might be a viable future option as synthetic

turf technology adapts to meet environmental

needs.

Alongside a new natural turf pitch there is

also a proposal for a new clubhouse style

amenities block at the site.

Councillor Ross Williams (Ind) sought further

community consultation on a proposed

larger pitch and a possible removal of trees

but Clr Julia Prieston (Lib) said councillors

had missed multiple government deadlines

to act on the grant and further debate would

be a waste of time.

Deputy Mayor Krassoi also urged action.

“We’ve got the clubhouse, we’ve got the

field, we’ve got the two million dollars, now

let’s do it,” she said.

All Saints Soccer Club has indicated it will

not oppose the decision on the synthetic

pitch.

Hunters Hill Guest Column

Why we listen to young people

It can be daunting, and difficult to

overcome roadblocks to become involved

important decision-making as

a young person.

For young people to be able to contribute

effectively to society, governments and

organisations need to value a different perspective,

and take a chance on hearing what

a younger generation has to say.

When I was elected to Hunter’s Hill Council

late last year, I learned that my community

did value the fresh outlook and energy for

change, that I had to offer.

The pace of change is accelerating in our

Millennial era, and you only have to look as

far as issues of environmental sustainability

or mental health to see that young people

have shaped this progression.

It is widely acknowledged that we need

young representatives at the table to be able

to formulate new solutions and advance

community goals.

* * *

This coming week we’re celebrating Youth

Week – a week-long celebration organised

by young people, for young people - in local

areas across Australia.

Youth Week aims to ensure that young people

have a voice and can influence change,

and feel connected, engaged with and welcomed

in their communities.

There will be activities and events available

across NSW for young people to attend and

participate in, ranging from forums and conferences,

to concerts and sports.

Ahead of Youth Week, Hunter’s Hill Council

held its annual Youth Summit – allowing local

high school students to share ideas for how

to promote good climate policy in our local

area and ways to boost youth engagement

with Council.

The Council will now work with the ideas

and projects pitched by those who attended,

to implement projects that are important to

youths living, working or studying in the area.

* * *

Relevantly, at our most recent Council

People sometimes refer to Hunters

Hill as being an area predominately

made up of ‘older’ residents.

However, when you look at the

demographics for our local government

area, data from our Community

Profile (based on Census of Population

and Housing results), it shows

that while we do have a higher proportion

of persons aged 60 or older

than Greater Sydney, we also have

higher proportion of young people,

aged under 18.

So, it’s fitting that around this time

of year we dedicate events and conversations

specifically to residents

in these important age groups.

On 24 March, we hosted our annual

Youth Summit at Town Hall.

It was an opportunity for local high

school students to share ideas with

our Council about sustainability

projects, and also how to get youth

more engaged in the community.

I’m passionate about youth representation

on our Council and that

was one of the reasons I stood for

election as a Councillor almost a

decade ago at the age of 21.

Having served two terms as a

Councillor and now entering a third

as Mayor, engaging a youth voice

through Council is something that

I believe is so important and it’s a

view I know other Councillors share

too.

Whether it is through a Youth Council

Last year, I campaigned that it was time

Liberals choose Simon Kennedy to contest Bennelong

Liberal Party members have chosen business executive, Simon

Kennedy, to contest the seat of Bennelong for the Liberal Party

at the upcoming federal election.

Raised in Epping, Mr Kennedy

is a former school captain of Epping

Boys High School and a former

member of the Ryde City Youth

Council.

Mr Kennedy said he was brought

up by a working single mother, who

taught him the value of hard work

and he started his working career

in the check-out queues of Epping

Coles and as a furniture removalist

for Epping Removals.

“Bennelong has been my home,

the place where I grew up and where

I want to build a future for my own

kids,” he said.

“It’s a great place, and we’ve had

extremely good representation from

great local members like John Howard

and John Alexander.

“JA has been outstanding representative

and tireless advocate for

Bennelong, who delivered so much

for our community. I hope to have the

opportunity to continue his important

work, delivering local infrastructure,

creating jobs and promoting our

small businesses.”

He said local families and small

businesses had endured challenging

times and he would work to support

the community in overcoming those

challenges.

“Our schools, services and infrastructure

need to keep up with the

growing community needs, and if

elected I will fight to get more funding

for local services and amenities

and to remove congestion from major

corridors including Epping, Marsden

and Victoria Roads,” he said.

The Member for Bennelong, John

Alexander OAM, said Mr Kennedy

was an exceptional candidate who

would be a strong voice for the community

in the Morrison Government.

“Simon has the experience and

track record to continue my work

of delivering for Bennelong community,”

As a former McKinsey executive,

Simon’s career took him to Washington

DC, working with the US government

on pro-business policies to

help millions of people into work.

In 2016, he co-founded McKinsey’s

Australian Public Sector Practice,

building strong relationships with

Cabinet Ministers, departments and

the private sector.

While working in the US, he met his

wife Nila, an infectious diseases doctor

at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital,

with the couple coming home

to give their two young children the

same upbringing and opportunities

he received.

One of the founders of Generation

Australia, a non-profit that places

long-term unemployed Sydney-siders

into jobs, Mr Kennedy has also

worked extensively with Barnardos

Australia and volunteered with the

local Rotary Club and Salvation

Army.

A Liberal Party statement said

that as part of the Morrison Liberal

team, Simon would work to deliver

economic recovery and a stronger

future for local families and businesses.

It has been four months since incumbent

Liberal Member for Bennelong,

Mr Alexander, announced he

would not be nominating for preselection

for the seat.

“After eleven years of having the

honour of representing the Federal

Seat of Bennelong and with nominations

for Liberal Party preselection

having been called, I should make

my intentions known,” Mr Alexander

said at the time.

“I make this announcement now in

fairness to those who may be interested

in nominating for preselection.

“I care deeply about the future of

Bennelong, and our Government,

and want the best possible candidates

competing for the honour of

being the Liberal Party candidate for

Bennelong.”

Government’s Bennelong investment

Meanwhile, Mr Kennedy, welcomed

the federal government’s investment

of almost $7 million for upgrading

of the Blaxland Road and Balaclava

Road intersection.

The Morrison Government is investing

an additional $2.2 million in

the 2022-23 Budget for this joint

state-federal project, to proceed with

the widening at the intersection, the

installation of a new raised median

and an upgrade of the existing traffic

signals.

Mr Kennedy said the funding to improve

this critical road juncture would

help road users to get through this

potential bottleneck faster and safer.

“This upgrade will improve the efficiency

and reliability of our roads

network, meaning that people will

spend less time in traffic and be able

to get to work or home faster, and get

to spend more time with their families,”

he said.

“The Morrison Government’s record

infrastructure investment pipeline has

been delivering better outcomes for

this community, and ensuring that we

have the roads and infrastructure that

Bennelong needs and deserves.”

He said Mr Alexander’s hard work

had delivered millions of dollars for

local infrastructure and amenities.

This included more than $90 million

in government funding for transport

improvements, such as $80 million

for the Macquarie University Station

Bus Interchange, $11 million for local

roads and community infrastructure

upgrades and now, almost $7 million

to bust congestion at a key Bennelong

intersection.

Preselection contest

Five candidates contested the preselection

ballot last Wednesday night at

The Epping Club.

Candidates Trenton Brown and Rose

Torossian were eliminated after the first

ballot, having attracted less than five

per cent of votes.

Mr Kennedy was seven votes short of

winning the contest in the first round,

with 51 per cent of the total votes required.

Craig Chung was the next to be eliminated

after his 48 votes were the lowest

of the three remaining candidates

with former Michaela Cash chief of

staff, Gisele Kapterian, attracting 80

votes and Mr Kennedy, 119.

Mr Kennedy defeated Ms Kapterian

148-95 in the final ballot.

PM opens new data centre in Mac Park

BY ANTHONY STAVRINOS

Prime Minister Scott Morrison

visited Macquarie Park on Friday

to open Macquarie Data

Centres’ new data centre at

Talavera Road - Intellicentre 3

(IC3 East).

As part of the event, the

Prime Minister was whisked

away from accompanying

media and into a room at the

facility to observe a “threat

hunt” with Macquarie’s ‘cyberwarriors’

involving the IT

infrastructure of a government

agency, using a playbook of

more than 4,000 techniques

employed by bad actors in the

cyber world.

The ‘cyberwarriors’ were

looking for patterns of compromise

or vulnerabilities

which could be exploited by

cybercriminals.

Speaking at the event, the

Prime Minister hailed IC3 East

as an example of the type of

secure, sovereign infrastructure

Australia needs to bolster

our cyber security capability

and accelerate the digital

economy.

“This centre we are finally

opening today – is about the

economy, it is about the digital

world that is transforming the

world, and it is about our security,”

he said.

“Increasingly, our economy

and our security depend on

each other.

“This campus is about both

– a mighty $200 million data

centre, Australian owned,

Australian operated, one of

the most trusted and certified

in Australia, with a team of

highly trained engineers delivering

up to 50 megawatts of

data storage capability.

“Our Government has set a

goal of Australia being a top

10 digital economy by 2030.”

He said an essential foundation

of such a goal was trust

and confidence.

“Trust in the regulatory systems

of a country, and confidence

it can meet the increasing

cyber challenges in our

world,” Mr Morrison said.

“Espionage, disinformation,

cyber-attacks, foreign interference,

and economic coercion

– these (are the) types of malignant

activities mounting in

our world.”

The official opening marked

the on-time, on-budget completion

of the data centre in

Macquarie’s Sydney Campus.

The project received an initial

investment of more than

$85 million and supported

over 1,200 construction, engineering,

cyber security, and

IT jobs throughout the COVID

pandemic.

The facility is designed to

support government organisations,

hyperscalers, global

multinationals and Australian

corporations with their IT infrastructure

and cybersecurity

needs.

“I was particularly excited to

join Prime Minister Scott Morrison

at the opening of the new

data centres at Macquarie Telecom,”

Mr Kennedy said.

“This represents a $180 million

investment by the company

in expanding its cyber security

services and capability.

“If elected, I will be a tireless

advocate for attracting more

innovative jobs to our community,

like the Macquarie Data

Centres.”

He said the community

would be the beneficiary as

more businesses, buoyed by

the government’s economic

plan, succeed and grew.

Kyinzom Dhongdue launched her campaign as the Democratic Alliance’s candidate

for Bennelong, at the Epping Community Centre on Saturday.

Among guests at the

launch supporting Kyinzom

was 2GB broadcaster and

philanthropist, Bill Crews.

“Running for Parliament

was not in my plan when I

came to Australia 16 years

ago as a stateless person,”

Kyinzom says.

“But as a Tibetan born in a

refugee camp in India, as a

result of China’s occupation

of Tibet, politics has always

been part of my destiny.

“I am a human rights advocate.

I am ready to give back

to the country that has given

me so much.”

She said she was running

for Parliament to give voice

to people who have not been

heard in Canberra.

“I am running to stamp out

corruption that is destroying

Australian democracy,

whether it’s money from China

or the fossil fuel industry,”

she said.

“For over a decade, I’d

walked in the halls of Parliament

to put human rights

before profit in Australia’s relationship

with China.

“But what I saw was corrupt

elites selling out, and

the Chinese Communist

Party infiltrating almost every

aspect of our free, democratic

society.”

Labor announces Laxale as its candidate for Bennelong

Labor has announced Jerome Laxale as its candidate for

Bennelong for the upcoming federal election.

Opposition Leader Anthony

Albanese made

the announcement on

Saturday morning in a

media doorstop with

selected invited outlets,

which did not include

The Weekly Times.

“This morning I announced

Jerome Laxale

as Labor’s candidate for

Bennelong,” Mr Albanese

said.

Mr Albanese described

the group of

around 20 people who

were photographed at

the launch as “a huge

crowd of community

members (who) turned

out to show their support

for him.”

“It’s clear how deeply

The City of Ryde officially

opened the new Rowe Street

East Car Park to the public

last week.

It will help address parking demand

in Eastwood and provide a

much-needed boost for the local

economy.

The new multi-level, short-stay

car park provides 146 spaces

with entry and exit points via

Rowe Street, and an exit via

Rowe Lane.

The car park also features a

range of modern and accessible

features including EV charging

stations, a passenger lift, number

plate recognition car park

management system and accessible

car spaces.

City of Ryde Mayor, Clr Jordan

Lane, said the new Rowe Street

East Car Park would support

small businesses in Eastwood.

“The new Rowe Street East car

park will address chronic parking

shortages in Eastwood, which

will in turn encourage more people

to visit the town centre to

shop, dine out or attend any of

the hundreds of wonderful businesses

located here,” Clr Lane

said.

“The City of Ryde is determined

to provide as much support

to our local businesses as

possible, and this new car park

is a prime example of how we

he cares about this area

and how loved he is by

the people here. Jerome

will deliver cheaper

childcare, strengthen

Medicare and lift wages

to build a better future

for Bennelong.”

Mr Albanese extended

his best wishes to

the retiring Member for

Bennelong, John Alexander

OAM, for his future

outside of politics.

“I want to pay tribute

to John Alexander. John

Alexander has made

representations to myself

when I was a Minister

in the Government,”

he said.

“He has also been a

strong advocate on issues

like high speed

rail, issues of which we

are in agreement. And

he’s also a mate who’s

greatly improved my

second serve.

“And that has been

important and has encouraged

me to be a bit

quicker round the court

these days.”

He said Mr Alexander

could be proud of his

work as a member for

Bennelong.

“But Bennelong needs

a new member. And I

was very determined

that Bennelong would

get the best member

possible,” Mr Albanese

said.

“And the best member

are going to achieve that.”

“I would like to thank the community

for its support with this

project and look forward to

working with them as we continue

to enhance the Eastwood

town centre as well as town centres

across the City of Ryde.”

The Rowe Street East car park

will be open 24 hours a day, seven

days a week.

During the day, motorists can

enjoy two hours of free parking

with incremental rate increases

after that point.

An evening flat rate of $5 for

more than two hours parking applies

for vehicles that enter the

carpark after 6pm.

possible for this area of

Sydney is the person

standing next to me. Jerome

Laxale is a committed

local.

“He served as the

Mayor of Ryde and

continues to serve as a

councillor with a record

of achievement.”

Clr Laxale said Bennelong

was his home and

had been for the last 15

years.

“I’ve had an absolute

pleasure serving on

council for the last nine

years and as mayor for

five years of that entire

time,” he said.

“I live here, been here

15 years, my kids go to

school here and it would

be an absolute honor to

be part of the Albanese

Labor Government in a

couple of weeks’ time.”

☐ The Korean Drum Group, Ryde councillors and community members at last Wednesday’s official

opening of the Rowe Street East Car Park.

Dual nationality

issue clarified

Clr Laxale also clarified

the issue of the potential

hurdle his dual French citizenship

had on his candidacy.

In November 2017, Mr

Alexander resigned as

Member for Bennelong

before successfully recontesting

the seat at a

byelection, after discovering

he was a dual British

citizen and was ineligible

to sit in Parliament.

“Like many people in

this electorate, I held dual

nationality,” Clr Laxale

said.

“So, when Albo rang I

needed to go through a

process to get rid of those

dual nationalities.

“The story that I’ve got

is very similar to the stories

of many people in this

electorate. My parents

were both born overseas,

they moved to Australia

as a land of hope and opportunity.

“They worked hard, sent

me to school and university.

This is the story of Bennelong.

That came with

it, that second passport,

which I’ve now thankfully

extinguished, enabling

(me) to announce here today.

That’s why I’ve left it

a little bit late.”

Clr Laxale’s mother,

Roselyne, was born in

Reunion Island, a French

state. Her husband Alain

was born in Mauritius,

which has French heritage.

Clr Laxale was born in

Australia and remains fluent

in French which he

learned before English.

His candidacy had been

kept secret in recent

weeks, but a Labor Party

media spokesperson

jumped the gun on Thursday

morning, announcing

it to media before Mr Albanese

could.

Greek flag raised at Kissing Point

Two hundred and

one years of Greek

independence was

commemorated at

Kissing Point Park on

Friday.

The commemoration

featured the raising of

the National Flag of

Greece in line with a

council motion introduced

by City of Ryde

Deputy Mayor Roy

Maggio to recognise

the contribution the

estimated six thousand

Greek speaking local

citizens have made to

economic, civic and

community life.

Council’s general

manager George

Dedes, who is of Greek

descent, also attended

the commemoration.

“The Greek War of

Independence, also

known as the Greek

Revolution of 1821,

was a successful war

of independence by

Greek revolutionaries

against the Ottoman

Empire between 1821

and 1829,” Mr Dedes

told The Weekly Times.

“The war led to the

formation of modern

Greece. The revolution

is celebrated by

Greeks around the

world as independence

day on 25 March.

“The City of Ryde has

a strong connection to

Greece with more than

6,000 residents with

Greek heritage and

ancestry, so it is fitting

that as a Council we

are able to pay tribute

to Greece, its rich history

and its wonderful

people.”

The motion also requires

the Council to

promote this contribution

through its media

and community relations

networks.

Arthur Kopsias

thanked the Council

during his speech at

the flag raising ceremony

and noted that

the event was the first

time any Sydney council

had commemorated

Greek Independence

Day.

He said last year’s

historic anniversary

was not celebrated

due to the pandemic

and he invited neighbouring

Hunter’s Hill

Council to take part

in future commemorations.

The Greeks revolted

against the Ottoman

Turks following more

than 400 years of occupation,

repression

and massacres but

Europe did not officially

recognise the

new Greek state until

the London Protocol

of 1830, three years

after a decisive victory

against the Turks in the

Battle of Navarino.

The fully equipped kitchen is centred at the heart of

the home’s design with its enormous stone island

bench and butler’s pantry flanked with endless storage

and integrated appliances. It again celebrates

beautiful design and functionality.

The considered design pays homage to an effortless

family lifestyle, creating specific entertainment

zones separate from those for sleeping.

But yet there is a beautiful sense of connection

throughout.

You are drawn through the main living space,

which spills towards the pool and the alfresco entertaining

area.

The seamless integration of the outdoors has been

executed perfectly.

You also have a separate outbuilding for extra garaging,

including a shower room to facilitate a home

office or self-contained accommodation; the choice

is yours.

This home truly excels with five bedrooms here

when it comes to accommodation.

Ultimately, you have an option of two master suites.

This allows the house to function as a vast single

level with a guest suite upstairs.

It’s this versatility that families love about a Binet

Home’s design.

What an exceptional property a testament to the

excellence of Binet Homes, an award-willing building

company that designs and constructs homes

with a reputation that is second to none in the

building industry.

Inspection times:

Wednesday & Friday 10:30am - 5:00pm

Saturday & Sunday 11:00am - 4:00pm

☐ Leading NSW strata lawyer/expert, Amanda Farmer

Neighbours behaving badly

Leading NSW strata lawyer/expert, Amanda Farmer, will be hosting a free online ‘webinar’

next Thursday (April 7) in partnership with Lane Cove Council and Hunter’s Hill

Council.

It forms part of a Northern

Sydney Regional Organisation

of Councils (NSROC) project under

the ‘NSW Environment Protection

Authority - Waste Less

Recycle More’ initiative, funded

from the waste levy.

The webinar is entitled: ‘How

to combat bad behaviour in your

apartment building using bylaws’.

Learn from Amanda, an experienced

strata lawyer, how to harness

the power of by-laws to restore

peace to your community.

Amanda shares those tools and

processes with you in an easy to

understand way, with the opportunity

for you to ask her questions.

As host of the Your Strata Property

podcast, Amanda shares the

tools and processes she has implemented

to help many building

and individual owners resolve

chronic problems – simply by

more effectively using by-laws.

With just a little knowledge of

this otherwise complex area of

the law, people can take confident

steps towards eliminating

the bad behaviour that’s preventing

them from properly enjoying

their home or investment.

“Basically many people who

own or live in an apartment (particularly

given the high density

apartment living in the northern

Sydney areas) are frequently

frustrated by their neighbours

given the close living proximity,”

Amanda says.

“The most irritating issues include

residents renovating without

any communication with

the strata committee or strata

manager; neighbours who create

unreasonable noise; dump their

rubbish creating a mess; or park

wherever they like.

“Many also feel unsure about

legal processes and Tribunal procedure

when they want to take

things further.”

Amanda is well-versed in a

number of associated topics, including:

Waste management and illegal

dumping: how communities

can better manage waste and

deal with problem residents illegally

dumping their items.

Noise complaints in strata:

how to deal with neighbours creating

unreasonable noise

Renovations: what approvals

do you need if you want to renovate

your apartment

Smoking in strata: how to

stop nuisance smokers

Short term letting: is this legal

and how can a community stop it

if they don’t want holiday makers

in their building

How the Public Health Order

impacts apartments: do people

have to be vaccinated to use the

building’s gym or pool?

Lane Cove Council’s sustainability

coordinator, Fiona Mc-

Cleary, said Illegal dumping can

present a danger to vehicles, pedestrians

and the environment.

“Items dumped on the kerbside

attract more waste, as well as

vermin such as rats, cockroaches

and flies,” she said.

“Illegally dumped waste also

significantly diminishes the look

and feel of Lane Cove.

“In 2020/21 there were 187

reports of illegal dumping, an

increase from 177 report the following

year.”

One of the key issues with recycling

arises from residents not

taking responsibility for recycling

correctly, particularly those living

in high rise buildings with waste

chutes.

☐ Josie from Link Wentworth is pictured with scholarship recipient Tina at the recent

scholarship ceremony.

Local community housing

provider, Link Wentworth has

donated $100,000 in scholarships

to help local residents

to pay for education, training,

hobbies and self-development.

Since being established in

2011, Link Wentworth (formerly

Link Housing) has donated a

total of half a million dollars

through their Scholarship Program.

Eastwood resident Tina, 41,

applied for a scholarship so she

could purchase the equipment

she needed to help her complete

a degree.

“I was unable to continue my

university studies as my new

course requirement was specific

equipment needed for designing

software,” she said

“I felt like there was no hope

for me as I definitely couldn’t afford

this.”

With Link Wentworth’s financial

assistance, Tina says she

can continue to pursue her

goals.

“I can see a positive, exciting

and bright future for myself in a

career I am passionate about.”

Tina and other local recipients

received their awards from

Hornsby Mayor Philip Ruddock

AO, at a Scholarship Program

Awards ceremony this month

at Link Wentworth’s Chatswood

Office.

Mayor Ruddock said Link

Wentworth’s contribution to

community life is appreciated

by the people of Hornsby.

“This is an extraordinary collaborative

effort for which I say

on behalf of all the citizens of

Hornsby is much appreciated,”

he said

“I thank Link Wentworth for

their generosity as they have

now given over half a million

dollars to assist residents taking

up opportunities that would not

otherwise be available to them.”

Link Wentworth is one of the

largest community housing

providers in Australia, managing

approximately 6,400 homes

with around 10,000 residents

and 200 staff.

It is committed to providing

homes for the most vulnerable

in the community and will host

a live stream event called The

Big Housing Debate on April 21

with a distinguished line up of

speakers.

Hunters Hill Rugby Club spokespersonon Luke McCormack said.

The club has announced its draw and this year will mark the 50th Anniversary of Hunters

Hill first winning the Kentwell Cup in 1972. “We have some big celebrations this season with

the annual Back to Boronia day being held at Boronia Park on the fourth of June versus our

old rivals Petersham.”

Devastation as Sydney FC

dominate but lose Grand Final

Sydney FC have been defeated 2-1 by Melbourne Victory in a heartbreaking

Grand Final which they dominated with 20 shots to seven but just couldn’t

find the back of the net.

State Memorial Service for Shane Warne

A State Memorial Service to honour

former Australian test cricketer

Mr Shane Warne will be held at 7pm

on Wednesday 30 March at the Melbourne

Cricket Ground.

Mr Warne didn’t just inspire

a cricketing generation – he

defined it. Born for the big occasion,

he gave us irreplaceable MCG

memories: the Ashes hat trick, his 700th wicket

and calming Bay 13 in his trackies.

In recognition of Mr Warne’s achievements

and legacy, his family have requested that

public attendees come to the MCG dressed in

their cricket gear.

There will also be plenty of options to view

the service for fans outside Victoria.

ABC TV, Nine, Seven and Ten networks will all

telecast the service live and the event will also

be live streamed at:

vic.gov.au/state-memorial-service-shanewarne

The Sky Blues ran rampant

and had balls cleared

off the line, hit the post, a

goal disallowed plus numerous

chances saved by Dumont

in the Melbourne goal.

It proved costly early in the

second half when a speculative

cross from Cooney-

Cross found the head of

Jackson.

Melbourne went further

ahead just after the hour

when a ricochet fell to Zimmerman

who smashed the

ball home.

A fiery encounter continued

when Vine equalised

two minutes later from

Rule’s downward header.

Vine and Lowe had chances

to pull the Sky Blues level

late on but it wasn’t to be

and Sydney FC fall at the

final hurdle.

“It’s heart-breaking, the

girls are devastated,” said

Sydney FC coach Ante Juric.

“They always pick themselves

up.

“If you put everything into

something and you lose,

that’s still winning, and I

truly believe that because

sometimes the scoreline

doesn’t reflect what actually

happened.

“But that’s just life. They

know they put everything

into it and deserved to win

but we didn’t.”

16 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 30 March, 2022

Don’t miss your chance to win a motza

By the one eyed Tiger

There’s never been a better time to

bet ma-in-law’s funeral fund money

on the Tigers winning the grand final

with some of the more reckless

bookies touting a staggering 150 to

one odds at the moment.

In fact no team has

as good an odds as

the Tigers have right

now and you’d be mad

as a pom in the midday

sun not to take this gilt

edged, golden opportunity

to win a motza

on the Tigers winning

the Grand Final.

But get down to the

betting shop quickly

because these amazing

odds won’t last as

the Tigers prepare to

unleash their exciting

new brand of attacking

football on the Jellies,

Gummies and Bunnies

in coming weeks.

Like a seasoned professional

jockey - Tiger’s

supercoach Michael

‘Madge’ Maguire

has his team just

where he wants them

to be - with a clear

view of the pack - and

a team primed for an

upcoming surge.

Not only has Madge

the most exciting attack

in football, he’s

also got a mean new

sliding defence and a

team that plays for the

club’s famous reputation

and for each other.

“Our intent is there

and we have a committed

team,” Madge

said.

“We have a new system

and it works.”

He said he’s proud of

his players’ commitment.

“I was really proud

about how the boys

went about things this

week.

“That’s what the season

is all about, it is

about building who we

are as a group.

“It is called resilience

and

that

is

what I’ve seen.”

The Tigers two new

signings from English

champions Wigan -

five eighth Jackson

Hastings and centre

Oliver Gildart - have

been outstanding and

have exceeded the

fans expectations.

Captain and prop

James Tamou returned

last week and

we’re counting down

the games as our

ace goal kicker Adam

Doueihi recovers from

injury.

This Thursday night

we’re off to Cbus

Stadium on the Gold

Coast for an 8pm

start.

SEE YA THERE!

☐ Sign Language! Winger Ken Maumalo is one of the exciting new players who will ensure the Tigers are

your Number One best bet this season.
