Dear Friends of Dutchies,
The year 2018 has surely begun with a sprint if we can say hello to February
already! The month of February being a month of love is also such an exciting
time at Dutchies as this is the month where we raise awareness for a very
special organisation close to our hearts, OAPD, which is the Overstrand
Association of People with Disabilities. We are even more excited to announce
that we have taken another project on board of our awareness campaigns,
called Yomelelani Education Project.
Yomelelani is a community pre-school project located in Zwelihle, an area on
the outskirts of Hermanus. This centre provides a crèche and pre-school for the
area's young children. Currently 55% of the children enrolled at Yomelelani are
orphans with the majority of the others are from single parent households. To
raise awareness and funds we have put together a small program at our
summer lounge from the 12th until the 18th February. Throughout the week
we will selling crafts that the young children have made and we will be hosting
some fun events.
Previously, we could have never have raised such incredible awareness of
OAPD without the help of the friends of Dutchies, we sincerely appreciate it
and can only hope for the same support once again this year! Please follow our

The Concept
This week is designed to raise awareness about the diverse experiences of people with
disabilities in our community. We would like to challenge assumptions and stereotypes that
society and people have regarding people with disabilities. Beyond the awareness campaign,
we would like to find opportunities to raise funds for the disabled. Events hosted by Dutchies
will occur throughout the week from the 19 th until the 26 th February 2017.
Organisation: OAPD (Overstrand association of People with Disabilities)
OAPD work with individuals with disabilities and their families
where they take the lead in achieving their potential, dreams and
goals, and ultimately independence. This may include (but is not
limited to) sourcing mobility devices, dealing with social issues
within the home, arranging for home care, caring and stimulating
children with severe disabilities or lobbying for accessibility in the
community.
