Blythe House News
Spring 2018
Hospice Services in the High Peak Community
Liv’s Story
Liv was 17, and had just started college when her
dad Roman was diagnosed with pancreatic
cancer. Sadly Roman died in 2016. Since then,
Liv has received bereavement support from the
counselling team at Blythe House, giving her the
space to come to terms with her loss. She talks
to us about what Blythe House means to her,
and why she is supporting this year’s Sunflower
Memories appeal.
“At the beginning, when my dad became ill, we
thought it was going to be something quite minor.
It was only when he was taken to A&E, and they
did a couple of scans that they realised he actually
had pancreatic cancer. My mum sat us down and
broke the news to us, but honestly I just didn’t
realise how much of an impact it was going to
have on us all.
“The sunflower memories
appeal is something so
special, it gives that sense
that you can rebuild after
such heartache. Planting
my sunflower and having
that memory of my Dad,
really means a lot to me”
I was at college and had exams to deal with, it
was very stressful. I was trying to revise and
concentrate, but I just couldn’t do it. I found it
so hard. I remember months going by and the house being really tense
because my dad would be in and out of hospital. I found it hard to
communicate with anybody and I didn’t want to talk about it, so I began
to feel really isolated. It was a difficult time and I’d come home and try
to be positive. Given what my dad was going through we always tried to
keep morale high.
Pancreatic Cancer can be difficult to treat, and my dad wasn’t able to
have surgery. We did a lot of research but there wasn’t really a cure.
Seeing such pain, in someone that I knew, is what really hurt me. My
dad was such a bubbly guy, he loved everybody and was so easy to get
along with. To see him change into someone who was quiet and didn’t
want to speak much and who’d get angry and frustrated at times
was difficult.
After my dad died, I knew he wouldn’t want me to think really sad
things about him, but you can’t help it when it’s somebody that you
really love. When I was struggling, a friend suggested bereavement
counselling at Blythe House, and this has helped me massively. I feel
like going through this has made me a much stronger person, and I
really wanted to get the message across to people in a similar situation
to me that there are people out there you can talk to. Without Blythe
I think I’d be in a bad place right now, feeling extremely isolated and
not knowing how to move forward.
Blythe House means so much to me, it’s a place where I feel safe and
comfortable. Everyone there is wonderful and they accept me for who
I am. I’m quite a shy person but Blythe has allowed me to be myself.
The staff make sure that you’re happy and okay, and Ray, my counsellor
has helped me to rebuild my life. The amount of support I have received
from the staff is truly touching and I thank every single person there,
they are all incredible and help so many people. I can’t express how
much I thank them.”
Liv was chosen out of 800 to take part in the
Children in Need Rickshaw Challenge last
November which raised awareness and
support for child bereavement counselling
and Blythe House.
“The rickshaw challenge has changed me as a person and shaped
me into someone that will carry on being determined and thinking
of the next challenges to set in my life; it was a truly magical
experience.
If I could offer advice for anyone going through the same as me, I’d
say to talk to someone. Everyone has their own ways of coping with
grief, and I didn’t think I needed counselling, however speaking to
someone in a safe place that will never judge you, and will listen to
what you have to say really helps.”
2017 Review by
Janet Dunphy, CEO
Happy New Year to you all, I wish you peace,
kindness and good times in equal measure.
Christmas was really busy at Blythe House as we reached out
and cared for more people. Both our Christmas fair and
festive coffee morning were huge successes, packed with
lovely visitors and we also enjoyed two very special Light up
a Life events. It feels really important to share these events
and moments together. We know that for some of you it is
the hardest of times and we feel very proud to be able to
stand with our community. A sincere thank you to everyone
who helped shape and deliver these events and a special
thank you to Chris, our wonderful handy man who made the
Hospice look as magical as ever with all the twinkling lights!
Blythe House and the High Peak area may be small but our
impact has been huge. Alongside our very busy clinical
services the fundraising, eBay sales and retail teams have
excelled. It truly is incredible how much the High Peak
community can give; which brings me to a new exciting
project for 2018. We will be continuing our partnership with
Macmillan Cancer Support to build a resilient workforce for
Blythe House. Our plan is to recruit talented volunteers and
train them for some very exciting specialist roles. This will
strengthen our community connections and increase our
sustainability.
Most of you will know that
I am a nurse, it’s not what I
do it’s who I am! My role is to keep everything safe, the people
who use our services, our staff, volunteers and the organisation.
My challenge has always been to know who needs the hospice
and to help as many people as possible. The whole volunteer
and staff workforce share this drive and their efforts are seen
and appreciated every day.
I would like to say a special thank you to Ann Burgoyne who
retired in December. I know that she has ended her fabulous
career knowing just how much her skills and passion have
mattered to everyone at Blythe House, she deserves to feel
so proud. However I’m not saying goodbye to Ann as she will
still be working with us in 2018 with our Mindful Compassion
courses.
Finally, we would not be here and could not continue the vital
work we do without our amazing volunteers and community
support. Thank you sincerely for helping us to be there.
Warmly,
Janet Dunphy
Blythe House Hospice CEO
Blythe House want to say
a HUGE thank you to all
of the fantastic local
businesses involved
We are always looking for new and
interesting ways to raise much needed
funds for the Hospice, so from July -
end September 2017 we teamed up with
some of the High Peaks finest local
businesses to see who could raise the
most money, all starting with £50 each.
It was a very close competition with events such as -
skydiving, car wash, charity head shave and a tiki bar
summer party being just some of the fabulous
fundraising events that were organized.
We were delighted with the results, as it was a very close competition!
The winners were The Eagle in Buxton, who raised an absolutely
incredible £1,226. Whilst the runners up came in close behind -
The Small Car Company (Whaley Bridge) - in 2nd place with £1,052,
and the Hairworx (Glossop) - in 3rd place with £996.
We were bowled over by the enthusiasm and inspiration of everyone
we worked with on the competition this year, and the total amount
raised tipped just over £5.4k!! All of the companies involved pulled
out all the stops and we loved every minute of working with them.
For more information on fundraising for the hospice - please contact
Make a Will Month
Making sure that the ones you love are taken care of after
you die is so important. Making a Will ensures that your
money and estate go to the people you care about most,
which is why we’re encouraging everyone to make a Will
this March - our ‘Make a Will Month’.
We have two solicitors from within the local community who are very
kindly offering to make or update your Will free of charge in exchange
for a donation to Blythe House Hospice.
Your Will is one of the most important documents you will ever sign
and it ensures peace of mind and security, not just for you but to
those you love too. In addition, you will be supporting your local
hospice. Whether you are planning to move house, get married, start
a new family or simply want to get organised, why not take part
this March.
Supporting us this ‘Wills Month’ could make a real difference to the
life of a hospice patient. Here are some examples of how your Will
could significantly benefit someone in our community:
A £30 amendment could fund a counselling
session for a bereaved child.
The £85 it costs to create a Will could
fund two physiotherapy sessions for
a patient.
A double Will costing £140 could help
provide overnight care from the Hospice at Home
team for someone at the end of their life.
Have you
made your
Will yet?
Throughout March participating solicitors
will make or update your Will
free of charge in exchange for a donation
to Blythe House Hospice
Your solicitor will invite you to leave a donation at the time of your first appointment. The suggested minimum donation is £85 to create a single Will,
£140 for a joint Will and £30 for a codicil (update to your existing Will).
Please note that if your Will is deemed complex or involves tax or other specialist legal advice, a fee for any additional work will be agreed in advance.
The scheme is only open to people who have not previously made a Will with the relevant participating firm.
Light
Life
Happy Retirement
In December 2017 we said farewell to a much
loved member of the team, as Ann Burgoyne,
our Living Well Lead Practitioner for the last
5 years retired after a career spanning almost
four decades.
Ann said “It’s been a privilege to work for Blythe
House and Macmillan, I’ve been very lucky.
People can come into Blythe House at their
lowest points; they don’t know what to do, where
to go, they can be completely overwhelmed. We
give them time, space and support to come to
terms with their situation. Without doubt I will
miss the people; Blythe House is a very special place and very
much reflects the community we’re based in.”
Meet Sheona Lacey,
our new Living Well
Service Lead.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I had always wanted to be a nurse, unsure until I
did my pre-nursing course if I wanted to work
with adults or children.
What was your first job?
As a student I had 2 part time jobs - working as
a waitress in a local pub, and as a care assistant
in a local nursing home. Once I had qualified as
a nurse my first job was on an Acute Medical
ward at Macclesfield Hospital.
What inspired you to be a nurse?
I don’t actually know what inspired me to be a nurse initially,
however a former colleague Lorraine Creach inspired me to be a
Macmillan Nurse. I had worked with her on the medical ward at
Macclesfield, and through watching her was sure that this was the
path I wanted to follow. I have subsequently spent the last 21 years
working within cancer and palliative care, the last 11 years as a
Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist. I will always remember saying to
myself I wanted to do the job that she did, and now am privileged
to say I have done it.
Why did you move to Blythe House?
I moved to Blythe as I was looking for an opportunity to further
develop my career and take on a new challenge. The role as the
Living Well lead practitioner was advertised and I felt excited at the
We would like to express our heartfelt thank you to
everyone who made a donation to Blythe House
during our Light up a Life appeal 2017.
Our remembrance services were well attended,
and it was wonderful to see so many of you join us
for our first church service at Chinley Independent
Chapel.
The kindness and generosity of those who made a
donation to the appeal has helped us to raise a fabulous
£5,200, enough to pay for two full days of all the care we
provide. The money donated through the appeal will go
directly towards providing our vital hospice care services
for local people, both at the hospice itself and out in the
local community. Thank you so much for your support.
Remember, you can support us by making a donation
throughout the year. If you would like to make a single or
regular donation to Blythe House please visit
www.blythehousehospice.org.uk.
Ann has worked in both North Derbyshire
and Cheshire, joining Macclesfield Hospital in
1981 as a Macmillan Lung Cancer Specialist
Nurse, before joining the Blythe House team
in 2010, firstly as our Macmillan Information
and Support Manager and then moving on
to be our Living Well Lead Practitioner.
Ann said “I feel confident that the right person
will be carrying on in my role. Sheona Lacey
was a Macmillan Nurse at Macclesfield
Hospital; she will bring a wealth of knowledge
and skills to continue supporting local people
affected by cancer and life-limiting illness.”
The whole team at Blythe House will miss Ann who has been
a huge part of the success here, we welcome Sheona warmly
though and are very glad to have her on board.
opportunity of undertaking it. I was inspired by
the ethos of Blythe and wanted to work in a
role that was leading a team of excellent staff
to continue to empower and support patients
living with serious illnesses to live with their
illness as well as they possibly can.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love spending time with my favourite people,
my children, my very new husband and my
family. They are all very important to me, and
being together enjoying various things is always
good. Spending time cooking is also a pleasure
and I also enjoy going to the theatre and
watching musical theatre. I am a big Alfie Boe
fan, and longstanding Michael Ball fan too!
What book are you currently reading?
After You - JoJo Moyes, the sequel to Me Before You.
If you were stranded on a Desert Island what 2 things
would you take?
Something to play music on and some music too! Oh and James
Martin if I’m allowed a third.
Who is your hero?
My Dad, quite simply he has been the best Dad. However, in the
last 2 years he has undergone his own serious health issues
and in the last year has taken on an unexpected role as main
carer for my Mum. Dad had always been ‘looked after’ and with
3 daughters too, been very spoilt! He has risen to this difficult
challenge with determination, and has proven to be a most
fantastic carer (and husband) ... and I’ve met many even though I
am a little biased!

Hallé Gala
Fundraising Concert
Blythe House Hospice is excited to
share the news that on October 7th
2018 the Hallé Orchestra will
return to Buxton Opera House for its
sixth gala concert in aid of the Hospice.
This year, the Hallé brings the magic of London’s West End right to the centre
of Buxton, with songs from some of the most celebrated musicals to come
from Theatre Land. Don’t miss out on the chance to hear all your favourite
pieces performed by the award winning orchestra, along with a star vocalist.
Pat Holland, Blythe House Trustee and owner of J Sidebotham & Son Jewellers
in Buxton, is again masterminding this event and capturing the imagination of
local residents, organisations and businesses, and persuading them to help in
fundraising for the event.
You may be aware that our previous sell-out gala concerts have all been truly
memorable and successful occasions.
To sponsor a member or section of the orchestra and help us make this event
possible, please contact Pat Holland on 01298 71938 or call the fundraising
team at the Hospice on 01298 815388.
Education, Training and Groups open to everyone
Blythe House regularly facilitate education, training and groups that are open to the general
public covering a range of subjects.
Below are some comments from participants of
previous writing groups at Blythe House:
“It has improved my self esteem
and taught me not to do
myself down”.
Blythe House Hospice have secured a Macmillan Cancer Support grant to
deliver a collection of new ‘Writing for Life’ groups starting in January 2018
and to run for a year. The groups are free and open to anyone in the High
Peak who is affected by, or living with, cancer or life-limiting illness. This
includes both patients and carers.
The first group will run for 10 weeks every Monday from 1.30 to 3.30pm
beginning on Monday 5th February, and a taster session is being held on Monday
22nd January from 1.30 to 3.30pm where people can find out more.
Group facilitator Julian Cohen, explains how the groups can help people:
“I have run therapeutic writing groups for a few years now, including two at Blythe
House. A lot of people think they cannot write or are concerned that they are not
good writers, yet in my experience everyone can write in really interesting and
powerful ways. My job is to help them to do this and feel confident about not just
writing but also sharing what they write with other people. We can all benefit from
speaking out, being heard, listening to other people and sharing our
feelings, difficulties and solutions”.
Julian uses a range of stimuli to help people write, varying from sentence
completion, keywords, focusing on memories, visualisations, writing letters to and
use of objects, photographs, music and published poems and stories. It is all very
open ended so people can write whatever they like and in their own way.
Julian says,
“It can often be quite magical. One minute you can be sitting in front of a blank piece
of paper and then suddenly it is full of words. We can be very surprised by what we
write and it is always interesting”. Julian also encourages people to read out their
work to each other and says “some people are reluctant at first but they usually
quickly come to enjoy doing so with everyone having their own unique
writing style and rhythm”.
The groups are small - with a maximum of 7 people in the regular groups. Julian
is assisted by a trained volunteer and makes sure that participants feel safe and
supported. There is no pressure on anyone to do anything they really don’t want
to do so why not come along and give it a try. You may discover an untapped
talent or simply you may just have fun!
“I was surprised by how
therapeutic it was to express my
thoughts on paper and to read
them to the group for feedback”.
“It allowed me to express
concerns and frustrations in
a protected, supportive
environment”.

Our Volunteer ebay co-ordinator Laurence Carr
talks to us about some of the exciting treasures
he has found in our Blythe House shops.
“One of the fascinating tasks that comes with checking items
donated to Blythe House for something valuable to sell on eBay
is the identification of gold and silver. We frequently receive
jewellery, cutlery and other metal that’s old, worn out and dirty.
Sometimes however, amongst it all can be a glint of gold or silver!
Donations of this sort are frequently dirty and may just look black
with grime or tarnished by age. It needs a sort of sixth sense to
pick out something that might just be of value. A few of our shop
volunteers seem to have developed this skill and occasionally I get
asked to take a closer look!
British gold and silver items are supposed to be hallmarked with
3 or 4 little stamps which identify the purity of the metal, the
maker’s name, the place where the item was assayed (tested for
purity) and the year it was tested. These marks can be tiny or
worn down by years of polishing or covered in grime so on initial
inspection they are easy to miss. Some items made of gold or
silver don’t have a hallmark at all. Testing gold is quite difficult
and requires care as it needs an “Acid Test”, literally using acids of
different strengths to test if a metal is gold or silver and its purity.
A few years ago we found two silver plates gilded with gold from
the 18th Century. Initially very dirty and looking like old pewter,
one of our volunteers spotted part of a hallmark. They sold for
around £800 for the pair!
Also pictured are some other shop finds that achieved some
great values.
Despite our best efforts to spot these treasures before they hit
the shelves, I know that gold and silver items still find their way
to the charity shops and great bargains can still be found by
shoppers.
If you have any old metal ware or jewellery you would like to
donate to Blythe House which you think might contain silver or
gold, please add a short note to this effect and leave it with the
donation. This ensures we check it out carefully before putting on
sale in the shops!“
A set of six teaspoons made
of solid silver. When we found
them they were mixed in with
a lot of old silver plated cutlery,
black with dirt and tarnish.
Hallmarks on the back
indicated made in Glasgow in
the reign of William 4th.
Sold for around £70
A small golden coloured brooch in the form of
an anchor with entwined leaves and berries.
Not hallmarked but acid testing indicated it
was 9ct gold. Sold for £35
A gold ID bracelet in 9ct gold. Initially thought
to be gold plated and worth nothing but a tiny
hallmark was spotted on the clasp.
Sold for just under £100
which was slightly over its scrap value.
