BATTERIES One last thing that’s very important is the strength, brightness and lifetime of a light is the type of battery being used. We use two types of batteries in our lights: lithium-ion polymer and cylindric lithium ion. Lithium-ion polymer Lithium batteries without a solid housing, but in a small aluminum bag. This makes them compact and lightweight. Easily produced in a certain size, without any standard sizes. Those type of batteries are being produced with a specific product in mind. Very vulnerable and have to be protected by the housing of the light itself. Braking or damaging the housing can lead to a short circuit in the battery. They get old less quickly, which means they can be recharged more often. There are batteries available with higher capacity claims, but those type of batteries are less stable, which can lead to all sorts of problems. Short battery lifetime, overload of circuit or short circuit are a few examples of those problems. CAPACITY MANAGEMENT A properly produced battery of a known brand in a good light has a good capacity management. Both light and battery that is. In the software of the lamp itself is programmed how the lamp handles its capacity and light output. Extreme examples are: a. As much light as possible results in a battery that empties fast b. Low light output means you can use the battery for a long time. After that, the amount of lumen is far less than mentioned on the packaging, for example only 1000 or even 500 lumen. This to maintain a bit of battery lifetime. At <strong>BBB</strong> we use a constant output. This results in a slightly lower starting point of lumen, but those amount of lumen are constant over the complete period of use. When the battery indicator turns on, the light switches to a ‘get-home-safe’ option, which is a lower light output to safe battery life. It depends on the purpose of the light whether we choose for a high power output and shorter battery life (MTB) or a maximum of battery life and slightly lower power output (Urban). LIGHTS EXPLAINED LIGHTS GUIDE Cylindric lithium ion Lithium batteries with a solid housing. We use the 18650 cell, which is also used in the famous Tesla Model S car. This size is standardized and can’t be produced in a certain size. The advantage is that those batteries are being produced on a lot of different quality levels. We only use the best brands available, Samsung and Panasonic. a. When you don’t want to use the ‘gethome-safe’ option, you can switch one light mode down. The battery indicator turns off and you have a steady output again. Aside from which type of battery is being used, the battery lifetime is as equally important. Both Samsung and Panasonic are stable batteries. This means, the output is stable with a minimum of highs and lows. b. 7
