privately by Alan and Gerard Wertheimer who are
the grandsons of the famous Pierre Wertheimer,
who was one of the earliest business partner of
the couturiere, Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel. Chanel
is a high luxury fashion house which specialises in
ready to wear clothes and haute couture, fashion
accessories and luxury goods. When she was in
her youth Gabrielle Chanel got the nickname
Coco during her period as a chanteuse. During
her time as a fashion designer, Coco Chanel
garnered attention for catering to women’s taste
for elegance in dress, with suits and blouses,
dresses and trousers, jewellery (Bijouterie and
gemstone) of elegantly simple designs which
effectively replaced the opulent, overly designed
and restrictive clothes and accessories of the 19 th
century fashion era.
The House of Chanel is extremely
famous for the ‘little black dress’; The
No. 5 Chanel perfume and the suit of
Chanel. The company’s use of jersey
material and fabric produced garments
that were comfortable. The Brand
revolutionised haute couture ( high
fashion) and prêt-à-porter (everyday
fashion) through the replacement of
structured silhouettes, on the basis of
the corset and the bodice, with garments
that managed to be functional and yet
flattering at the same time to a
woman’s figure.
The products of Chanel have been
personified by actresses and fashion
models, including Catherine Deneuve,
Carole Bouquet, Ines de La Fressange,
Vanessa Paradis, Nicole Kidman, Audrey
Tautou, Anna Mouglalis, Keira Knightley
and Marilyn Monroe.
Logo and Corporate
identity
The Chanel logotype comprises two
interlocked, opposed letters-C, one faced
left, one faced right. The logotype was
given to Chanel by the Château de
Crémat, Nice, and was not registered as a
trademark until the first Chanel shops were
established. Along with other makers,
Chanel is a target of counterfeiters. China
is prime supplier. An authentic classic
Chanel handbag retails from around US
$4,150, while a counterfeit usually costs
around US$200. Beginning in the 1990s, all
authentic Chanel handbags were
numbered.
