12 | February 22, 2018 | The highland park landmark school hplandmark.com High school charity drive will benefit childhood cancer patients Xavier Ward, Editor High school charity drives are not uncommon, but it has been a tradition at Highland Park High School since 1994. Each year the school votes on a charity to support and then they organizes a number of fundraisers. “Last year we raised money for the Zacharias Sexual Abuse Center,” said Lily Schor, one of this year’s charitydrive heads. “We raised $140,456.” Schor, a junior at Highland Park High School, is one of three student heads. She and her partners senior Emma Lund and junior Spencer Dowell looked through hundreds of applications from area charities. Finally, the trio decided on three charities to put to a vote: the Highland Park-Highwood Legal Aid Clinic, Illinois State Schools Alliance and Cal’s Angels. Once the three were selected, Schor said, it was completely out of the group’s hands. Schor added that in order to inform students about what each charity does, the three organizations produced their own 45-minute video to present to students. A number of students did their own research on the three organizations, Schor added. The vote went in favor of Cal’s Angels, a St. Charles-based charity that benefits pediatric-cancer patients. “They have a three pronged approach of granting wishes, raising awareness and funding research,” Schor said. “We seriously couldn’t be happier with them as our charity.” Schor, Lund and Dowell travelled to Chicago’s Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital and meet some of the patients who were benefactors of Cal’s Angels, Schor added. During the charity drive, there’s a different event almost every day, she said. The day after Cal’s Angels was chosen, students decked out the entire school in gold, the color that represents the fight against pediatric cancer. Events such as the 24-Hour Run provide the community and students with a fun way to raise money. The 24-Hour Run features members of the track and cross-country team at Highland Park High School. The biggest money maker, Schor said, is the silent auction that takes place during the 24-Hour Run. Other events the school hosts are food charity drives at local restaurants such as Portillos, Chipotle or Blaze, as well as a school dance at Michael’s, which is compete with a D.J. “We really, this year especially, are trying to reach out to the different clubs in our school,” Schor said, noting that they want all students to get involved. Schor added that most of the events are open to the public. She said she can’t speculate how much money the drive has raised so far, but said that the heads are confident they’re doing well. There is still time to donate, as the charity drive runs through March 3. “We are just so excited,” Schor said.
