James Pierandozzi (138) and Yousif Salah (182) were also qualifiers, but went winless. Athlete of the Week 10 Questions with Yousif Salah Yousif Salah is a senior at Lockport Township. He qualified for the individual state finals and wrestled there at 182 pounds this past weekend. What did it mean for you to get to state for the first time ever as an individual? It was a dream come true. It’s always been a dream of mine to qualify and get to state and be one of the top competitors. You missed half of this season with an injury. What was that? I was in a car accident right around the second week of the football season and hurt my hand. I tore ligaments in my right thumb and had surgery on that. It was a heartbreak to miss my senior season [of football], but I was able to come back and wrestle at the Cheesehead Tournament [on Jan. 5 and 6 in Kaukauna, Wisconsin]. I want to thank all my family, coaches and teammates for all the support. How did you get involved in wrestling? I started wrestling when I was 4 or 5. My uncle, Jehad Hamdan [wrestled] for the University of Michigan, and he was like, “You’re going to wrestle.” Another uncle, Sameen Khalil, also worked with me wrestling. I’ve got a younger brother, Jameel, wrestling on the sophomore team at Lockport, and many of my cousins and relatives wrestle, too. Last year, the Porters won the dual team state tournament. What was it like to win that? Words can’t describe what it was like. Payton Fernandes (in 1:45 at 195 pounds), myself (in 2:38 at 220) and Ronald Tucker (in 2:50 at 285) got a trio of pins in a row in the title match [a 33-20 win against Montini]. If we don’t get those, we might not have won the state title. It was great for our seniors to end that way. What would it mean for the Porters to take home a fourth-straight state trophy? We hope to [win the state title] again. Just to get back down and get another trophy 22nd Century Media File Photo would be great, since it would be the first time that Lockport has done that. You’ve been at some different weights during you career as a Porter. How difficult has that been? I started at 170 pounds as a freshman, then went to 182 as a sophomore. Last season, I was at 220, and there were a lot of bigger guys there. After the car accident, I lost some weight and was down to 190, so we decided for me to get back down to 182 and wrestle there. There’s a lot of good competition here, too, but it’s worked out well for me, and I know I just want to finish strong. What do you do to motivate yourself before a match? I just put my headphones in and think about myself at the top of the podium. I don’t have a favorite song, but I have a playlist, and that gets my chills going. What have you learned from Lockport wrestling coach Josh Oster? Josh has been a huge inspiration for me. He talks everyday before and after practice about pushing ourselves to be the best we can be. Also, our assistant coach Matt Barkley and [former Porter state champion wrestler] Brad Johnson have also been very instrumental in helping me out, too. Do you plan to wrestle in college? Yes, that’s the plan. I just don’t know where yet. Wisconsin-Whitewater is a possibility, but so is Joliet Junior College. JJC just started their program, and they have a real good fire science curriculum there. I hope to be a paramedic/fireman. What is the best thing about being an athlete at Lockport? Lockport has a great tradition of good athletes. But No. 1, there is always academics, and No. 2 is athletics.
