It was evident on Feb. 13, when around 70 young women, many with their mothers, gathered at The Book Stall in Winnetka to hear author and fashion trailblazer Tavi Gevinson talk about her career as a writer, editor and actress and read from her newest book, “Rookie on Love.” Gevinson, who’s career first began at age 11 when she created the blog, Style Rookie, launched Rookie online magazine at 15, featuring articles from fashion to pop culture, feminism and politics, and everything in between. Gevinson has had her work followed by Karl Lagerfeld and Anna Wintour, attended New York and Paris fashion weeks as a teen, and even starred in movies and on TV. Now 21 years old and living in New York City, Gevinson came to Winnetka to promote her latest book, which is an anthology of short stories, essays, poetry and interviews about thoughts or experiences of love written by Gevinson and selected contributors. Three of Gevinson’s contributors to the book were local writers who also read their selections from “Rookie on Love,” including Wilmette’s Jessica Hopper, Upasna Barath, from North Central College in Naperville and Chicago resident Jasmine Sanders. “We chose love for the book because that’s the subject area from which we received the most questions for our advice columns,” Gevinson said. “Romantic “Rookie on Love” by Tavi Gevinson $14.95 Available at The Book Stall, 811 Elm Street, Winnetka love is the biggest one, then friends, family stuff, selfesteem and self-respect. We thought it would bring a lot of those topics together in this one book.” Gevinson told the crowd that to create “Rookie on Love,” she contacted regular contributors to her Rookie online magazine and those she and her staff admired for their work — those who truly know what it means to understand another person. First to read was Barath, who had just gone through a breakup. “Writing this was a way for me to process it,” Barath said. “It talks about commitment when you are so young and feeling the sense of discomfort when you do it.” Next was Hopper, who once served as Rookie’s music critic. “My definition of love has changed,” she said. “When I was younger, I hated men. As I got older, I judged women and used feminism as a yardstick.” Hopper ended by talking about how her outlook on life changed. Sanders read an essay she wrote about teenage love that compared herself to the character, Sethe, in Toni Morrison’s, “Beloved” and “Maternal Ambivalence,” and an experience in her own life that raised the issue of a woman’s right to have control over her reproductive future. Wilmette resident Jessica Hopper, a local Rookie contributor, addresses the crowd. Gevinson then read one of her essays included in “Rookie on Love.” Following the readings, Gevinson opened the floor for questions and answers. Some wanted to know how the group of young women got started. “Rookie gives voice to girls, encouraging them to speak up, meet up and make stuff,” Gevinson said. “It empowers them to submit their stories, ideas and artwork to the site and participate in media rather than letting it control them. It is a supportive environment where many have felt comfortable sharing the details of their inner lives, particularly when it comes to love.” Hopper was a member of the original Rookie editorial team. Previously, she was a senior editor of MTV News and currently, is writing her memoirs about being a young writer in Chicago.
