28 | February 22, 2018 | The wilmette beacon School wilmettebeacon.com New Trier student starts philanthropic basketball company Raises money for autism at Highland Park event Eric DeGrechie Editor Ethan Rosen may have global business aspirations in mind for his future, but he’s currently focusing on making entrepreneurial waves here on the North Shore. The New Trier junior created his own company, Easy Hoops, this past September, to provide a safe environment for everyone to be themselves, try new things and meet new people through the sport of basketball. “Basketball has always been a huge part of my life. I was always the player on the court that knew what to do, but had trouble doing it,” Rosen said. “I’m short. I had to take a different approach to basketball.” Rosen, 17, of Glencoe, opted to start coaching a few years back. He has worked with the travel team in the Glencoe Park District. He also coached at camps. Combining his love of the game, his desire to do service work and growing business savviness led to starting Easy Hoops. “[Last summer] I was talking to kids and family, they told me that I should do something with basketball. They said I was making an impact by teaching kids sports, but that there’s more I can do,” Rosen said. “There was more I could do on a broader scope and who I could impact in the long run.” Rosen recently partnered up with Aspiritech, Easy Hoops Mission Statement By offering a welcoming environment, our goal is to empower everyone to be their best. Whether it is learning about basketball, gaining a sense of teamwork and camaraderie, or getting lost in conversation about life, our mission is to help everyone be their best self. We use basketball as a platform to unify all people we work with in a safe and fun atmosphere. Not everyone has the belief that they can be their best. With Easy Hoops, we want to set the bar to be accessible for people of all abilities. Success means different things to different people. We want you to define your own success. a company out of Highland Park, to put on an Easy Hoops basketball event. Held at the Jewish Council for Youth Services Lutz Family Center on Feb. 4, Rosen and his team worked with people of all ages and abilities on basketball and life skills. The New Trier varsity boys basketball team also made an appearance at the vent. Easy Hoops, which raises money for various organizations, tries to revolve lessons around a specific value or virtue at each event, according to Rosen. Some examples include courage, perseverance, determination, teamwork and more. “The more you help other people, the more you’re helping yourself,” Rosen said. “I’ve always been a people person.” According to its website, Aspiritech harnesses the strengths of people with autism — attention to detail, precision, an affinity for repetitive tasks and outstanding technology skills. They use this to provide high quality, competitively-priced, domestic software testing and other quality assurance services. The company hires people on the higher-functioning end of the autism spectrum. At the event in Highland Park, Easy Hoops and Aspiritech spent the day helping attendees work on their basketball skills, virtues and teamwork. Eight New Trier players helped out. Rosen is a busy guy. He is the president of the Find a Cure Service Board for Leukemia Lymphoma Society, Illinois Chapter. He is a team captain for Team Tyler of Autism Speaks Northshore. His is also vice president for SCOPE Midwest Junior Leadership. An honors Spanish student at New Trier, Rosen will be studying in Salamanca, Spain this summer. “I live in an awesome, Easy Hoops employees enjoy playing basketball. beautiful town. I have healthy, loving family and friends around me.
