Cornwall Councillor - St Teath, St Breward & Delabole Two issues around parking have come up recently at New County Hall. The first is around the use of the 300 Cornwall Council car parks in towns and villages. From the 1st April car parking in our pay and display car parks will be free of charge in the evenings. In some areas this will be as early as 4pm, but in any case no later than 6pm. There will also be a standard charge for the more popular shopping car parks of £1.50 per hour up to a maximum of £8 to park for 24 hours where allowed. There will also continue to be 30 minute parking options in Falmouth, Penzance, St Ives and Truro. The other issue is around disabled parking bays for residents. In the past, residents who have been eligible for bays outside of their properties have been quoted in excess of £3500 in order to pay for the formal Traffic Road Order which makes any contravention legally enforceable. It has come to our attention that some Local Authorities are making no charge for bays by making them just advisory, while others cluster applications to share the cost and keep the bays fully enforceable. We are now reviewing our policy on this and so if you have applied in the past and been put off by the cost or have recently found yourself eligible and needing a disabled bay close to your property please let me know and I will keep you fully informed of the new policy when it comes into play. Last month I warned that Council Tax bill would be likely to rise by as much as 7%. I am pleased to report that the government have since released £150 million more nationwide for Adult Social Care which has enabled Cornwall Council to keep this part of the precept lower by a full 1% I was however correct in my presumption that the Police and Crime Commissioner would be seeking the maximum increase allowable to the Police through Council Tax which is an extra £12 per year for a Band D property. It is now part of my role to sit on the Police and Crime Panel and I was happy to support the increase to enable the Chief Constable to grow the number of full time officers and introduce new technology to make their working hours more efficient and give them more time on the beat. I am also supportive of the joint working between the Council, Police and Ambulance services in Cornwall sharing a small number of blue light officers who can do a range of tasks. This could well be the best way for rural communities to have a genuine officer presence in their area in the future. However, I did point out to the Commissioner and the Chief constable that we have real concerns in Cornwall around road safety. Fatal accidents on the A38 had already been raised at Full Council and of course, closer to home we have had two recent tragedies on the roads around Camelford. The Chief Constable assured me that this was a high priority for him and that a major road safety campaign will be announced shortly. Last year we were worried that the Nankersey MVC might not know the way to the village but as Holman Climax has been visiting us for so many years we feel confident that they’ll be there on Sunday 25th March at 7.30pm, in good voice 155 years old and raring to go. They’ll be there and we hope that you’ll be there too to give them a warm North Cornish welcome - by the way, programmes are £5, which I hope you’ll think is a real bargain for live entertainment. I’ve put the cart before the horse, as the concert is the end of our day of celebrations. The beginning is at 11am with a service of thanksgiving led by Rev Bryan and Mrs Sue Ede. This is followed by a Roast Beef lunch at 12.45pm in the Sunday School (donations please) but we do need to know how many we’re catering for so do book (212558) by March 19th. Songs of Praise starts at 6pm and then the concert at 7.30pm. It’d be great to have your company at any or all of these events. Helen Hicks
